Why Tavarish will never, ever ride a motorcycle again

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We all know Tavarish from his crazy car builds but his first attempt at motorized entrepreneurship was on two wheels. After getting his motorcycle license, he decided it was time to try out a sport bike. It went...badly.

I ride bicycles to get my 2-wheel fix. You know what bicycles get right and motorcycles get wrong? On a bicycle, your hands don't control acceleration, only steering and braking, so you can't possibly accelerate out-of-control if your death-grip reflex kicks in at the wrong moment. (granted, bicycles can't accelerate _at all_ without the rider using their feet to pedal, but the point is valid nonetheless.) Feet are for accelerating, hands are for holding-on and maintaining control -- that is how humans are built, and that is how human reflexes work. Motorcycles should be designed to account for this.

Commonly referred to as "Whiskey Throttle". IMO most noobs on bikes should learn on an under powered dirt bike, falling on dirt is much more forgiving. That being said, I started out on a street bike in the twisty mountain roads of NorCal.....I made it up the mountain on my second day of owning my new bike, only to hit an 80lb deer. It caused me to lay it down and it pinned my leg, 4 spiral fractures on my 'shin'. Freaking bikes man, so fun yet so very dangerous.

Just a little FYI for anyone that reads this...If you are going in a straight line for the most part, just hit the deer and relax on the handlebars, everything should correct itself on its own. This does no apply if you are on a turn or the deer is a giant(you may get lucky on a turn). There are quite a few videos of guys demolishing deer and it works out fine.

My friend took the test same day as my brother and my buddy couldn’t ride a straight line to save his life even on the scooter. He did the practice course for like an hour and failed every time while my brother had it nailed. Then, somehow during the test, the planets aligned, a symphony gently played while my buddy missed every cone, eased every turn like he was on rails and passed first go with 0 points deducted. My brother dropped the scooter during a slow turn and failed in the first 15 seconds. My buddy I served with in the Army was giving the test but even he couldn’t let dropping it slide.

My first bike was when I was 16. It’s a brand new Harley 48. A torque monster and a burnout machine. I never rode before that, not even dirt bikes. When it was delivered I hopped on, stalled it a few times. After figuring out the clutch, within a few minutes I was on the road. First time ever on a motorcycle, on my brand new Harley. It still shocks me how it came so naturally with nearly no manual experience. To this day it’s my everyday driver. I take her up to 110 everyday going to work, with still another gear to go. I’ll hit a curve and send sparks flying from the pegs and even had the front wheel up a few times. The more I mod it out the more I love it. Riding isn’t for everyone, it’s dangerous. A lot of people have bad experiences their first time riding and never want to look at a bike again. Maybe one day you’ll come around tho! Keep up the good work Vinwiki.

Was kind of the same with my moped here yamaha dt50 when i was 15 back in 2009. 0 training on a manual or geared anything besides my mountain bike which i sometimes took through the forest there at the time, though i probably had an easier time on a moped because of years of mountain bike riding, taking jumps doing wheelies etc. (Never did try too wheelie more then i think twice on the dt50 though it was quite heavy & the suspension would just soak up any attempt anyway unless you were starting on a slope & wouldn't mind hurting the clutch or miss a gear as it jumped back out, but i could do some basic jumps with it at least which i kind of liked doing but wanted something that could go faster.) I kind of stopped riding it just because when i forgot the fuel tap for a while & flooded the carb it was easier to just ride my bicycle too the grocery store instead of trying too get the moped started for 10 - 15 minutes i could simply ride my bike down in 3 minutes & be back in another 20 minutes done shopping, did i think 1 full fuel tank over 3 months that year, that's how little i actually rode it where i live, sold it after 1 winter too my cousin for spare parts, he had bought a tuned newer dt that shared like 90% of the parts & i saved up too a gaming pc instead. They had too take it apart because of the oil simply getting turned into a goop due too it sitting unused there was 0 oil that came out when we pulled the drain plug it was simply tar lol. When i did remember too turn off the fuel tap though it was super easy too start in almost any temperature & weather i rode it in, was just turn key, kick once or twice & some throttle & it would be up & running in no time. Been considering once i get a job that I'd save up too buy a used motorbike here or at least take a driver license of some sort & buy a cheap beater that's fuel efficient.

My cousin did the same thing, only she hit the side of the fence, and the handlebar getting stuck stopped her from moving (her belt buckle made a huge dent in the tank!). I forgot one of the golden rules when teaching someone to ride a bike for the first time: make sure that their throttle wrist is bent back as much as possible so they can barely open the throttle, and so that if they reach for the front brake or hold on tight, they automatically shut off the throttle. When it came time to teach my younger brother, I made sure to do that, and there were no problems despite using a much heavier and more powerful 600cc sports bike.

My cousin did i think the slowest head on crash I've ever seen with my moped a bone stock 80's Yamaha dt50 when he was 14 in 2009 & i had just turned 16 a while earlier, he dented the tank with his head when he crashed in our yard. (Thankfully i told him too wear a helmet before getting on as you never know how it will end if he would end up in a tree or similar.) He went about 5 meters into our grill in the yard that was facing the wall of the house, he veered left thankfully due too the wet grass after pretty much dropping the clutch at 50% rpm so it went from moving perhaps 10 km/h too a dead stop, don't think my sides has hurt that much since that day as the noises from the crash was so damn perfect & cartoonish along with the expression on his face when he got up, moped ofc shut off nearly instantly so wasn't worried about that at all besides the dent making it look a bit uglier. a few minutes later after learning the clutch he ran the same laps in the yard as me almost instantly & took it off a rock covered in grass that kind of acted as a ramp.

I had the same experience when I first started learning how to ride motorcycles. My Grandfather was the one responsible for teaching me how to ride. After my first crash, I got up and started walking away and as I did my grandfather stopped me and told me to dust off and get back on the bike. Very reluctant to do so, I did anyways and after learning that falling off the bike isn’t so bad and gaining a lot of experience in the process, I’ve now become a great rider and rarely have any fear of crashing. So Tavarish, I highly believe that you can over come your fear and with effort and confidence I know you can do the same.

I had a very similar experience my first time on a bike. Although, I hit a parked car instead of a fence (and did a sweet but unintentional wheelie for about 20ft). Tavarish hit the nail on the head of what happens when you're not ready for the bike to move. You can think you have all the knowledge in the world, but theory and practice are very, very different. Same as him, I knew I how to drive a manual car, but I learned that day the bike world is completely different. I would encourage anyone who has had this experience, or thinks this is what will happen to them, not to give up on motorcycles, because learning to ride has been one of the most fun and rewarding experiences I have ever had. You just have to start slow, and preferably find someone more experienced than you to show you the ropes. I really hope Tavarish gives it another go someday. The day I crashed, I decided that I had no choice but to learn to ride, because I couldn't let my only motorcycle experience be a bad one. I can't lie, it's one of the best decisions I've ever made.

You start learning by feeling the clutch take up point with your hand off the throttle and your foot on the rear brake. Then start moving forward at idle only and for just a metre or two. Then you can add some throttle once you have that mastered.

If you ever reconsider getting on a bike again you should consider taking a safety course. When I took it, on the first day they spent a lot of time going over getting used to the clutch/throttle operation and getting used to the "friction zone".

Motorcycles are a lot of fun but yes they can be dangerous. I'd rather be on a motorcycle than a scooter. I've owned both. On an adequately powered motorcycle you have the ability (sometimes) to use the power to actually get out of trouble. I do respect your decision not to ride a motorcycle. Entertaining video. Thank you.

I had a similar experience with my dad's Kawasaki KLR-650. So my first time on a motorcycle was on something with a lot more get up & go than a little 250cc Ninja, but a big thumper also revs up a bit slower than a 250, so I had that going for me. Hit the throttle, carefully eased myself up enough to be able to shift to second gear, and when I let the clutch out, THAT was when his bike picked up some serious speed and I just froze. Completely. And right in front of me was a pair of curbs because the parking lot we were in had islands that weren't filled in with dirt. They were literally just curbs, with parking lot inside of them. His bike mounted both curbs like they weren't even there. Shrugged them off completely. My back sure didn't, though. I managed to hit the brakes and stop, and his bike fell over, but I had a bicycling reflex of jumping off as the bike fell so it didn't land ON me. Needless to say, I concluded that motorcycles are a level of insanity that I don't intend to play around with again anytime soon. I'll ride passenger, but I won't be the driver.

Similar with my experience. First time I was about eight and my cousin let me try his motorcycle. Forgot which was the brake and ended up in a ditch. Second time was about thirty years later and my wife was going to give me her motorcycle. This time at least I made it to the end of the parking lot and figured out where the brake was. Last time I was on a motorcycle, that was about twenty five years ago.

Watching people ride dirt bikes for the first time was a favorite past time of mine growing up. I have watched dozens of people do the exact same thing in this story. Once the start sliding back, the more they twist the throttle, the faster they go, the more the slide off the back , the more they twist the throttle...it's a dangerous cycle that very few first time riders can get out of. And all they have to do is pull in the clutch and it all stops😂😂😂😂

I used to have a home built super cross track(I have some videos of it on my channel) and there was this one kid that would come by every day but he didn’t know how to ride a bike. Every time he would try to ride, something similar to Tavarish’s story would happen. It happened so often that we would start aiming the bike at different obstacles, like berms, jumps, whoops, trees etc. we would make bets on whether he would hit the obstacle and crash...which he did every time. He crashed about 10 times in a couple months with a total of about 40 seconds total seat time😂😂😂it was insanely entertaining

this is why i think its best to learn how to ride on something like a 125cc or less dirt bike out in the country. which is exactly how i learned to ride when i was like 14. didn't have anything to hit whatsoever, and it was the kind of bike where if you end up in a field on accident you're not completely stuck there. the 80cc bike i was riding didn't have enough power to do a wheelie unless you really revved it and dumped the clutch. the bike i have now is a 2004 yamaha tw200. which i bought with 300 miles on it from a good friend of my father about 7 years ago for $1500 because his son had fallen off of it and broke his arm. there was a dent in the gas tank and some of the plastics had broken mounting points.. but considering it was like $5200 new i figured it was a pretty good deal considering it had no miles. i've since fixed it up and modified it a fair amount... and every time i ride it i get people asking me what it is or if they can buy it. i've had people follow me all over town trying to buy it from me.
