He actually paid nothing, when I shattered my shoulder in NC on the ridges they hospital billed me at $53,000, i ended up pahing 0 because my boss at the time got one of the charities to pay it off, considering I was 21 with a child onthey way they saw it as putting me in finacial distress. Their are charities that will automatically cover anything under $70,000 if it is considered a major surgery

Over 3 years, I negotiated from $150,000 to $800. I only paid the hospital that figured out what the actual problem was (Mayo Clinic). Since the biggest bill was from the hospital who gave me a staph infection while I was there looking for treatment for my actual problem (then wanted to be paid to treat the thing they caused), that one was rather easy to get written off. Throw in a few very weird negative comments from a couple other doctors & I only ended up paying what I felt like I should have. Yes I did have insurance. Negotiations with hospitals are necessary. Insurance companies do it all the time. I'm not sure why more people don't do so.

Rob thank you for this story. November of last year (2017) I lost part of my left foot due to rolling my ankle while installing a hardtop on my jeep. I spent a week in a hospital and 8 weeks home hooked up to an IV for Antibiotics. You hit the nail on the head when you said a little praise goes a long way. Like you, I was cracking jokes with nurses and doctors. But I was also a smartass(better than being a dumbass). After 8 weeks and healed up I started getting bills sent in. I noticed that insurance paid their part, but I only had small amounts. Each envelope I opened there was a little letter that said, "thank you for being a breath of fresh air". I always tell people I'm an asshole but a nice asshole, and politeness and humor usually does the trick for me to get people to smile.

I did something similar in 1994 on my Yamaha RD400. Now, I didn't break anything. My side bags saved my legs. They didn't save my jeans. And the leg was very bloody. It also has a tendency to forecast weather ever since.

Rob, your positivity and a good nature generated a good result. Being a character doesn't hurt either. Now I'm sure the good folks at the hospital are used to your Southern accent but in this video and with that voice of yours you make a dang good story teller, son. You are one charming rogue and I could listen to you tell stories all night. Glad it all worked out all right. P.S.: Don't take the "son" part too personal. I'm a week away from 73 years so I've got a few on you. And I ride a '99 1100cc Yammie cruiser (460 lbs dry weight) on a set of stickies and they earn their keep. All in good fun.... Keep it sticky side down, and thanks for sharing. Best regards from a Canadian. The part a couple of hundred miles east of northern Michigan. I'm 45 minutes from the Seaway if the right people are looking in the correct direction, namely away.

I once had a doctor that was not that well liked by a lot of people. He was considered gruff, had bad bedside manor and so on... Psh, he was one of my favorite doctors, because even as a kid, he didn't dumb things down and gave things straight and to the point, and he did his job VERY well. It also helped being smart enough to understand and keep up with what he talked about and he did a great job of explaining anything I may not have understood right away. And, as you said, praise goes a long way.

So so true, people the last 10-15 years have gotten so trigger happy when it comes to complaining that they have completely forgotten how to be polite and pay someone a compliment when they go above and beyond. I'm not saying you have to write a thank you letter to the person that sells you a load of 2x4's at the lumber yard, but if that person goes and automatically helps you load them up, secure everything, and basically go above their basic job description, then you should take a moment to at least acknowledge that and to many people just think that it is automatic, and that they are entitled to that level of service. Anyway, good story and yes take the time to praise when its note worthy

Its nice to see a nice comment net a nice thing. Not enough of that going around. I regularly throw out service tickets for the grandmas and the struggling care takers. Probably would not have thrown out yours, but you probably wont miss that hundred bucks. A few times I’ve had calls “you helped out my grand mother and i would have covered it. Would you like first ups on this strip mall or restaurant. “ the payback for a life of honest work is a life of honest work. I hope you never forget that gift and your gifted to return it where needed.

Trust fund kids make up 90% of the industry, people who came from nothing and worked hard don't spend their money. They hoard and invest it because they know how much work each dollar represents. Like the kind of guy who pays off everything including mortgage, has a cool million in his vanguard account, 2.5 years of emergency fund but can't bring himself to spend more than $35k on a car (which he'll keep for a decade). I know a lot of rich people, and only the ones who grew up rich or became rich fast spend money.

What he said about the hospital taking care of his bill from the donation fund is 100% truth. I worked in a hospital finance office about 10 years ago and you’d be amazed at the bills they wrote off and paid with donations for good people.

That's a fantastic story and I fully agree. Anytime someone does well by me I make sure to let them know and with business I let supervisers know. Just being a nice human being is rewarding in and of itself but you never know what knock on effects it can have. I was at McDonnalds the other day after work and the guy in the car next to me as I was leaving had a beautiful Jaguar. I nodded to him and told him it was a nice car and turns out the guy was an older gentleman who had always dreamed of having a Jag but never thought he would afford it, and finally decided it was time to make that dream a reality and had just bought it. The joy in his voice was wonderful and he even thanked me for mentioning it. Lesson: Be a nice person and life in general will just be better.

Someone rear ended my car with my girl and me in it while on the highway. They never even hit the brakes. Was in hospital for 2 months and with heli transport to hospital and hospital bills, it was over 1 million. I had crappy insurance and so did the guy that caused the wreck . Didn’t even get close to 100K and that was supposed to pay for everything. Had a lawyer that I had to give 33% of what I got to add to not even being close to paying off all bills. So now have a butt load of debt and my left arm and shoulder only work about half of what it did before and my neck and back will forever hurt since both broke in the wreck. With all that, I am very grateful to not be paralyzed(of course alive) and that nothing happened to my girlfriend. The nurses at the hospital made all the difference. Some of the best people I’ve met.

They had just developed the nail procedure, and I was one of the first people that they used it on. Suzuki versus Toyota, Nov '84. But it was my right leg, top and bottom. Back then it was 6 weeks in the hospital. A real mixed bag. Some amazing staff, some incredibly incompetent. You definitely lucked out in your situation.
