Why Spawn Camping Is Fine, Actually

Ойындар

Spawn camping in TF2 is often seen as an underhanded tactic worthy of ire, but in more serious settings it's treated as just another strategy. What does spawn camping look like in a competitive environment and how does it differ from a casual setting?

the virgin competitive spawncamper: puts stickies in front of enemy spawn, kills 1 person then runs away because now the enemy team knows the chad casual spawncamper: brings a phlog and pocket medic, stands in front of the enemy spawn and kills 6 people

If speaking exclusively on the 5 capture point mode, spawn camping is a legitimate strategy that demonstrates player skill more than it does vindictiveness. To make the act of spawn camping worthwhile in 6s, you have to have pretty thoroughly routed or wiped an enemy team (unless you want to risk being flanked on low HP while waiting near a shutter door), you likely need to win at least one solid flank fight (possible 1v1) in order to be in a position to move from your teamfight posture to a spawn door, and on top of this you will still need to be fast. It takes a combination of execution and somewhat lucky timing for the situation to even arise. Moreover, the best part about spawn camping in 6s is that it's incredibly easy to avoid as the backfoot team by just waiting for a capture to go through. There is a lot of choice and interaction potential on both sides, so if there is ever the case where someone dies to a spawn camp strategy, it still doesn't entirely feel like a death or kill was cheated out of anyone. Yes, you get pushed two points backward, but TF2 is already a fast game of momentum swings, so this is something to which players have generally adapted. What's more is that it is still possible to overextend, so just because you lost two points very quickly doesn't entirely mean that you have zero fight options depending on your spawn waves and uber add/disad. Better yet--bad round? It happens. Give it your best at last, lose, and then try again next! The pacing of TF2 and respective player options within combat really takes the edge off of losing a round, a match, or even dying like a goofball the second you step out of spawn (enemy taunt included).

Where is the "plenty of counterplay" to 5 people spamming the single forward spawn door? Sitting in spawn afk for several minutes is not counterplay.

Generally spawn camping is almost always the fault of the team thats getting spawn camped. Sometimes a demo will slip through but a good team will be able to kl him. A team thats getting relentlessly spawn camped is going to have pretty bad players. It really comes down to that.

If the teams are both balanced and coordinated, getting far enough to spawncamp is an expression of skill and strategy. In casual: Your teammates won't or can't alert you to any potential threats. There are twice as many enemy players to keep track of. There are drastic skill differences to the point where rolling out in pairs may not provide enough of an advantage. Same conclusion as the previous video. In Casual, you need to surprise one person, in competitive you need to surprise a whole team.

people with more than 2 braincells when they realize it's pretty obvious when spawncamping is even a possibility in comp 6s and you can just switch to pyro, and there's a literal spawn door cam in casual and you can also just switch to pyro or engie or use the other door:

Ooooh, as someone who strongly hates spawncamping on principal (at least when it comes to casual rolls), I'm really curious to see if you'll change my mind on this. I can definitely buy it being a different story in 6s.

Okay, yeah! I can totally see how, in a comp environment, it's a very calculated and counterable strategy. Obviously, it's a little different for casual. I think I just don't like or respect rolls. Like, at a certain point, it's casual. Haven't we all kind of surrendered a point prematurely at some point or another just because we kind of wanted the round to keep going? In my experience, if I'm rolling, that's when I switch to a less optimized weapon set and take the chance to practice with it. God knows I need the practice with pipes.

Comp players will do anything to cope about their skillless engagements. It's not camping but "holding angles", spam is skillful because you have to grab an ammo pack to continue spamming and now even spawn camping is actually something requiring high resolution thinking and there's plenty of counterplay to it, such as palming your eyes and crying.

I like how DBD community demonized camping, even though it was 1 killer of 1 killers camping 1 survivor of 4 survivors, allowing others to just sit and do gens, while TF2 players say that this is fine (TF2 players try not to act morally superior challenge (impossible)). And for those getting spawncamped in Casual, just call it out, "V" button is not that far, the time to write "Demo's camping us" in chat doesn't take that much time and effort. Plus it's partially your fault for letting a Demo pass you/enemy team push you into spawn. Also, funny story, I've played on some TF2C payload map and there were large health and ammo pack RIGHT NEAR THE SPAWN, just insinuating BLU team to spawncamp as Heavy, which I did lol. Too bad I got banned for saying "killing yourself is gay", smh :\

Spawn camping is, outside of extreme exceptions such as genuinely horrendous map designs like Dustbowl second segment, literally just a team skill issue in every environment. The team in the spawn has infinite resources and the team outside of the spawn is fucked. In comp it's even less of an issue, but in casual you can just pull out the Short Circuit, Detonator, Scorch Shot, Airblast and even on your own prevent demo spawncamping. If you have more players there one player can usually push off 3-4 players even simply by chipping them successfully and b4nny binding/doing good shutter peeks. There isn't a mode where spawncamping is broken, and in particular in Payload the only way to capture last is to spawncamp usually. There are only maps where spawncamping is broken, not modes, and maybe we shouldn't be playing maps that dogshit.

In my opinion, any behavior in TF2 that isn’t inherently mean spirited (racist chats, nsfw stuff, etc.) is fine. Barely any other shooters today just let the player goof off - like 3 heavies using the table taunt in spawn wouldn’t fly in any other game because they’d be kicked for not playing the objective. So spawn camping is fine, if your team can’t get out of it then what’s the loss? The stakes are nonexistent in casual tf2 matches so either take the lead and swap to medic for an Uber push or drop out and find another game. Like yeah getting camped is annoying but trying to make fun of the dude camping you isn’t gonna make you look cool.

I will never understand complaining about spawncamping, even in casual. you're in a protected room with infinite health and ammo, and every class instantly available. if you can't get out of there, you're not gonna do any better anywhere else on the map lol

Maps like Harvest, Lakeside, 1st Upward RED spawn, or Dustbowl are very popular but have one place to leave from. I think it’s much different than a map with 2+ exits from spawn.

There's a difference between having just 1 exit from spawn and several. In casual, on those 1 exit spawn rooms, you're _fucked_ unless someone pulls out the short circuit or pyro, if it's even a demo or a soldier spawn camping you, and you gotta be quicker on the trigger.
