As a huge Giants fan, I hope he does sign here, but Farhan is gonna have to offer him everything if he wants him to come here. Every team wants Shohei, so the Giants will need to make sure they convince him to come to SF over every other team. The thing that shohei has made clear is he wants to win, the Giants this season despite having flashes, finished 79-83. If the Giants want to get him, not only r they gonna have to lay money on the floor for him, but they’re gonna have to convince him that they will be a winning team and imo getting other FAs first will help a ton

With the monster payroll already allocated to Freeman and Betts? Nope. SF doesn’t have that payroll problem. Tons of room to offer whatever they want to get him. No huge contracts on their books. Will they? Who knows. They have too many holes to fill. That and I don’t trust Farhan to reel in a big fish. He and the ownership group up to this point have been far too cheap. The Giants will probably sign someone like Matt Chapman, and a few other “complimentary pieces” and call it a good productive offseason. Which would be a kick in the balls to any Giants fan. The Dodgers right now desperately need pitching. Not two yrs from now. They have plenty of offense. Great pitching and defense wins championships. They have the defense, just not enough quality healthy arms to pitch.

It can also be really brutal for left handed hitters. Just ask Brandon Belt or Brandon Crawford or Max Muncy who hates hitting at Oracle. Not sure if you're a Giants fan. If you are than you already know all of this: the center-right field fence is 415ft where a lot of lefties hit their would be home runs that turn into outs. The rest of right field is surrounded by brick archways that stand 20-24 ft high. Yes, the right field porch is fairly short, but you need to elevate the ball enough to get it over those archways. Also the damp wind, and SF is an extremely windy city especially from March through August, has a tendency to knock down hard hit baseballs that should be HRs right into right fielders' gloves. Barry was special and adjusted to the park and pulled the ball hard over the right field archways and into the cove. Not many lefties can do that. Ohtani seems to be equally special and likely will make the same adjustments Barry did. Looking at his spray chart, he doesn't do that like Barry did. Probably because he plays in a relatively hitter friendly park. Not sure where he wants to play. I'd love to see him don the SF orange and black.

The Giants are in a heavily competitive league in the NL West especially with AZ looking to be legitimately good. Going to the Giants wouldn't give him a better chance at winning a WS compared to staying on the Angels. As a Padres fan, it's sad to say this but Ohtani will likely be a Dodger as they do have the best track record out of all NL West teams.

@@wesleycorrigan7736 valid point. They also have the Rangers who also made the WS this year, but then there are the A's. I kinda see it this way: the Astros are like the Dodgers, dominant in their division with an outstanding track record and maintaining a balanced team, the Mariners are kinda like the Dbacks with young talented players who are looking like legitimate teams, the Rangers are sort of like the Giants only Giants are behind on many aspects but they have the potential, the Angels are kind of like the Padres with their superstars and lots of potential but never seem to carry out, and the A's are kinda like the Rock... nvm the Rockies are a far better team. I do admit the AL is a much tougher league all around but in terms of division, I just don't see how Ohtani leaving the Angels to go to the Giants would give him more success in winning a championship. I see Ohtani being a Dodger as a more successful outcome for him (it would be like him going to the Astros) and this is coming from a terrified Padres/ Ohtani fan.

A lineup of Carter, Seager, Ohtani, Adolis, Jung, Semien, Lowe, Heim and Langford would just be unfair. To flash forward to 2025, a SP of deGrom, Ohtani, Montgomery, Eovaldi, plus whatever big get they acquire when they deal Leody Tavares and Ezekiel Duran (a SS capable of hitting 25 HRs and hitting 3rd for most teams) to add to a top 10 farm system will be scary. If he wants to win, this would be a dynasty.

The game in east coast usually start at 3 AM that no one watch tv in jpn. Therefore, ohtani is the cheap date for the team located in the west coast but, expensive for the east😅

Because Zaidi has proven time and again that he’s unable to negotiate contracts with the the bigger free agents. All Zaidi (and the front office) does is dumpster dive in free agency for a discount deal on the nearest injury prone veteran. And plus with his comment on not adding starting pitching depth it just doesn’t seem promising. I’ll believe it when I see it.

I think people are really underestimating the money aspect of it. “But he said he wants to win.” Yeah him and every other player. I’m not saying he’s going to go straight to the team that gives him the most money but I am saying that none of the teams who are generally outside of top ten in payroll have a chance (sorry mariners fans but it’s time to stop the cope, y’all are too poor). Realistically the Dodgers have everything he’s looking for - huge fan base, west coast, a team full of star power, win now potential, and of course very deep pockets. I see the Giants just being a bargain bin Dodgers in regards to all of the things a free agent would be looking for. The only reason I would ever see Ohtani going to the Giants instead is if they overpaid heavy, because as long as the Dodgers want him, they will easily be able to afford a realistic offer for him.

As a giants fan I would love to see them pursue Ohtani. However, this is why that isn’t going to happen. As a power hitter chasing home run records, going to San Fransisco would be one of the worst places to play. The cold foggy weather and tall right field wall makes it extremely hard to hit home runs. We’ve seen this and haven’t had a single player hit over 40 home runs since Barry Bonds. It also makes sense that Aaron Judge didn’t want to go to Giants because his home run numbers would have gone down significantly. I believe Ohtani will most likely go to the dodgers where he can play in a more hitter friendly ballpark and have a chance to break records

The Ohtani contract will absolutely DESTROY any team he goes to! Anyone who signs him won’t EVER win a championship! If you’re going to pay ONE person a half of a billion dollars, that person should contribute every game. If he gets hurt hitting, he can’t pitch. If he gets hurt pitching, he can’t hit. Already he has to miss 2024 and not pitch so you lose HALF the value on this trade. Not to mention, if he slows the rehab process or gets hurt while batting next year then you’ll lose all value attached to him. MAX I’d give him a two year contract. Once he rehabs and proves he can pitch every five days and DH every day then I’ll toss in the money he deserves. Until then, this contract will easily destroy any team in baseball! Too many people think what he’s doing in the league is a rare occurrence, but most don’t realize this. In the US, for years we’ve advocated for our athletes to pick one attribute they’re good at and stick to it. If you grew up in high school or college and could pitch AND hit, once you got to the minor leagues they MADE you choose one or the other. Why?! Because again you’re a liability if you get hurt hitting then you can’t pitch. If you get hurt pitching then you can’t hit. In Japan, they’re very accepting and accommodating of two way players. This is evident when you see just how many two way players have developed in overseas baseball as opposed to the US. Isn’t it funny that now the US is accepting of two way players as several of them were drafted this year?! I like Shohei, but what he’s doing isn’t that special. He’s the perfect storm of being the best at baseball in a market where we literally don’t allow two way players to exist! If he wants a ring, he’ll take a pay cut, plain and simple. Because of Ohtani, the US will let the flood gates open and allow for more two way players to be a part of baseball, and they will arrive sooner than you think. Anyone who signs Ohtani to a long term contract will feel the effects of that IMMEDIATELY, while other teams reap the benefits years later!

Ohtani camp already said that they are paying attention to roster construction, not location. Dodgers have two of the best players in the west on Freeman and Mookie Betts, a deep bullpen and a better manager in Dave Roberts, they also go to the playoffs on a yearly basis. Rangers, Mariners and Astros have all have a better chance than the Giants who would have Ohtani stuck in non playoff contention for at least a year. Bob Melvin, California and money is not enough for Giants to get him, he’s most likely to consider the Dodgers.

  • @Dodgers-sw2uk

I do think the Giants will have a very big offseason. I could see them getting both Nola and Snell. But they would be extremely foolish to let those guys pass in the market to wait for Ohtani. Because the odds of Ohtani picking them over the Dodgers is literally 5% at best. Dodgers just have too big of an advantage in location, winning culture. And the Giants won’t be able to outbid the Dodgers either. If they somehow did it wouldn’t be by enough to offset those other 2 big factors
