    While I'm a die-hard fan of RWBY and pretty much all of Rooster Teeth's works period, I agree with you as far as the missed opportunity. I think that, while the programming is pretty good for a team of 10, Toby Fox managed to create an entire universe that even spawned AU's and cancerous fanfictions, by himself, from scratch. The RT team had all the wit and humor from the original show at their disposal, but they opt'ed to go with prettier environments. All-in-all, I'm gonna get it anyways, because, again, I'm a die-hard fan of RWBY, but yeah, everything you said was pretty much on point. You have been spared from my wrath, this time.

    +smallfry 132080 Rwby is a bit hard to get into. The first volume would get around a 5/10 for me, but it gets progressively better as it ages. Volume 2 gets a good 7.5/10 and volume 3 gets around a 9.25/10. Volume 1 is all about introducing the characters, so they don't get much chance to really do anything interesting with them. Volume 2 is way better because of the improved animation, and story telling (but has a few slip ups, like someone running along rooftops) but is still kinda stuck in the introducing characters to us stage. Volume 3 is amazing, because they are finally done introducing main characters to us, giving us good information about how the character is growing, and has a really good story to match the incredibly improved animation. i cant tell you how volume 4 will be since its not out, but from what i saw at RTX it will have a slightly different animation style (its done in maya instead of poser pro) but the animation is still really well done. Clipping in volume 1 is everywhere and hard to ignore, volume 2 its still present but harder to care about, and volume 3 i had to search HARD to find clipping. Id try to tough it out, watch the trailers, they will get you hyped up enough to get through volume 1, when your done with volume 1, volume 2 will be good enough to keep you interested for the amazing show that begins in volume 3.

  • @MattiusThad

    @MattiusThad

    8 жыл бұрын

    I'd say it is. It's comparing two relatively popular indie games and how they were developed. Toby Fox essentially worked alone, with exception to Temmie Chang, and they made an RPG. Meanwhile, with a team of about ten people, a 3D action game sounds a bit out of reach, to me. I think the thing to take away from this is that development teams should know their limits, or at least the publishers in charge should recognize the limits of said development team. If you're going to have a smaller team develop a harder to create game then you should give them some leeway and let them work a bit longer, y'know?

    @mr.simpleandcleanburn1192

    Michael Edwards the review was not really pissed from what I herd just disappointed; however from what I herd that disappointment was directed at the story, not really the game. RT has experience in making a story and that is something you can be disappointed with. On to the baby argument, they aren't baby video game makers as we aren't in a time in which video games are just graphics music and game play. Now a days video games have story, characters, their development and atmosphere, all which they have experience in making, I'd say it's more like asking a baker to make clam chowder in a bread bowl, he's got the bread bowl down but the chowder, not so much; however, to keep the vehicle going, he doesn't even have the bread bowl down.

  • @Michaelrandom27

    @Michaelrandom27

    7 жыл бұрын

    Aidan Gray That was a lot of text, so I'll go quote by quote. "That disappointment was directed at the story, not really the game." It is toward both of these things. He shows disappointment toward gameplay by implicating that it's extremely boring and repetitive, and dissing the counterattack system. "RT has experience in making a story and that is something you can be disappointed with." Not all games need story, as long as the gameplay is good. Examples: Tetris, Mario Kart, Dynasty Warriors spinoffs, Some Dragon Ball games, all sports games (even though I don't like sports games), you get the point. "They aren't baby video game makers" Yes, they are. Since it's their first game, they are prone to rookie mistakes. That is unavoidable. Hiring voice actors to remember and recite a lot of lines costs more money, and we can agree that this was a low-budget game. It was essentially an experiment. if they make a sequel, mark my words, it will be much better than this.

  • @mr.simpleandcleanburn1192

    @mr.simpleandcleanburn1192

    Michael Edwards I disagree. I hate the gameplay in duck dynasty but did I expect anything in it, no. Meaning I wasn't disappointed because it was expected to suck. Once again to keep the vehicle, you don't expect the clam chowder to be good; however come to think of it, it's disappointing to see that baker making bad clam chowder, especially when you know he knows how to make it, has eaten it 100s of times, and knows what you're not supposed to do when making it. In other words RT has played many games, they know how to make it, and they have criticized many games; however they still botched it. I will agree with the fact that games don't need a good story; however with something more narrative heavy like rwby, a good story is expected, and if it's not there then RT failed at making this a good addition to the rwby lore, effectively being a waste of time. And again they have experience

    why is it unacceptable for a company like capcom to release an unfinished game and totally fine when RT does it? this game was rushed out. DmC and ESPECIALLY bayonetta were hack n' slash games with incredible storylines, so there's no excuse there either. yes, the game is based off of a fan idea but that's no reason for RT to leave problems or lacking gameplay elements unfixed. stop defending RT pushing out a mediocre product for a cashgrab.

  • @autisonm

    Kenemon Capcom is a gaming company with multiple games under their belt and have a larger budget naturally when creating their games. Its not that bad of a game as everyone hyped it up to be. I understand people wanted it to be more than what they got and that it is over priced currently but that is not their fault. They need money to create more stuff for the game and make it better. They don't have the shows budget and they work hard from what I can tell on not only making it but also fixing it. Plus Miles and Kerry probably only helped lay out a general idea of the story so it obviously wouldn't be as good as the shows original plot. If this truly was a cash grab then why would they continue to fix it and say that they are going to add another game mode in for free?

    In the video, you mentioned that team attacks are random, while this is true to an extendt, there is a way to guarantee a team attack setup. If you manage to stun the grimm with either Blakes upgraded range attack, or other means of stunning grimm, (keep in mind, some grimm attacks will stun them after they execute it) u can then charge up a heavy hit and then gat a team attack setup, obviously, if the attacks you do inflict enough damage to kill the grimm, then it will die and there wont be a team attack to execute, despite your efforts to set it up. Also to keep in mind, some grimm cannot be stunned, and most fo the time that means they cant be team attacked, but there are also grimm that can be stunned, but not team attacked.

    +MigzerGames Sure (not a few) patches/updates would fix this game but a reviewer has to review what's on the table right now. Keep in mind the team working on this game is tiny and I doubt RT will even dedicate much development funds to this game as it is. So the chances of fixing this game are probably feasibly lower than Half Life 3 being released this year. This isn't a Overwatch scenario where Blizzard WILL update the game and content WILL be added because unlike Overwatch this game is barely worth the effort. Tl;dr there is no reason for RoosterTeeth to fix this game, the reviewer is fully justified into not taking that into account and reviewing it as it is.

    Considering that this was Rooster Teeth Game's first "real" game (and one which started as a fan-made project), a lot of criticism here seems rather harsh. With that in mind, perhaps the goal was to see exactly how much the RWBY fanbase wanted an official RWBY game, without straining the limits of what the studio is actually capable of at this present time. Not to mention that, even after being taken out of Early Access, it still isn't technically finished yet- there's still new characters and modes coming, and they are constantly tweaking to get things just right. Is the price steep- yeah, I will agree. But then again, I'm one of the die-hard FNDM'rs out there who got this for under £12 on it's EA release (my first Steam purchase too, BTW), so I would think that. And this could be me just white-knighting for my favourite series-turning-franchise here, but again this is RTG's fist game to this scale. And they are VERY involved with the community, so I expect that the future development of Grimm Eclipse (or maybe even the next RWBY game) will improve on what they learned with this project- and perhaps if you took that into consideration, your qualms with the game would be slightly-more abated.

    ***** Those first-timer games only did well because standards were set incredibly low- either by lack of interest or by the developer coming out of nowhere. And it's very few that do that- majority of debut titles actually flop big time, especially nowadays- because there's a significant lack of experience in production, and thus the games suffer with poor optimisation, terrible visual assets, lacking in content or wonky controls. People think just because this is coming from a mostly-successful, community-driven company that they'll be top-notch right out the gate- when that's impossible for anyone. Even Pacman had its fair share of pitfalls. And back to it coming out of EA too early: people practically demanded it come now. Not to mention it had been out for almost a year- any Steam game left in EA for a year or longer tends to get either forgotten or slated by the community because the developers 'lost touch' with the project. Taking everything into consideration, the community kinda forced them to push it out before it was complete. [although the price could still be lower- maybe £18, tops].

    I feel like one of the biggest let downs for me was when they changed the combat system to a far more simple and button mashy one. The original combat system in the first build wasn't great, but there was far more you had to pay attention to, and your super moves were each distinct enough to have a specific use. Some were super powerful ranged attacks while another might have been an all around AoE attack great for clearing out opponents when surrounded. On top of this each character in the original build felt distinct as well, as if each had something to offer the team. RWBY was a jack of all trades but a master of none, with decent but not great melee combos, speed, and range. Weiss was a great ranged support character with many of her super moves and upgrades reflecting this, while her melee attacks often ended in a push back affect either of the enemy or you allowing you to return to fighting at range. Blake was fast and quick great at dispatching lots of week enemies and harassing big ones. Her low damage however meant she wasn't that good at dealing with the bigger opponents on her own. Finally Yang was kinda slow in terms of attack speed, but her attacks packed a lot more punch. This meant she wasn't that great at dealing with lots of enemies quickly but she was really good at dealing with big opponents. Basically my point is that before the combat simplification each character felt like they had something unique about them. It also felt like there was more thought that went into how you would combo your basic attacks to get certain end combo effects to better set yourself up for using one of your three super moves. Sadly all this was lost when they decided the combat system needed to be simplified.

    It's been a while since I've a gamespot review and now I remember why: they suck at games.The person playing doesn't know how to use the dodge (which the game does tell you about) or counters.And the reviewer is just wrong on certain things. You CAN evade a mutated grimms explosion by countering and then dodging out of the way (mind-bending stuff, I know). Team attacks aren't entirely random. A countering a charged strong attack is pretty much guaranteed, but the person playing rarely used strong attacks. And the timing for counters is huge save for two enemies. The game is average, but this review isn't.

    I think the biggest problem is the comabet system. You'll do the same combo 50 times, then move to the next wave point. Then only thing halfway interesting in my opinion are the boars, but even then it's usually better to just whak at them and maybe attempt an evade if opportunity randomly arises. Otherwise: The tunnel things - charge your heavy a bit and onehit them or do two light one heavy. The beowulfs - one full combo and a bit I think. Maybe you can get fewer if you counter them but there is really no reason to do soand overall you are usually faster without it. I think I would prefer an angle with less enemy numbers, but more meaning to each Make the beowulf 5 times as tanky, maybe increase the time they lower their guard after a charged heavy attack a bit and I think it'd alreday be a lot more interesting.

    Stop defending this game just because you like the show. If you like the game fine, but it really is far too simple, short, and lacking in plot to be either a proper RWBY game or worth the price. The point of criticism isn't to mindlessly hate, it's to point out the issues with something to either prime developers in their creation of new games, or to help them fix the current ones. Criticism is good, your sad denial of the flaws in a game is at least part of what prevents it from being improved. Thanks for the review Jean-Luc, I always appreciate people who ignore the rabid fans and do what has to be done. Personally what irked me most was the graphical change. Not only was it completely unwarranted in my opinion, but it removed one of the primary reasons to buy a RWBY game, along with the combat (also not represented in game) and team aspect. The worst part is that it wasn't reflected in the Steam store page for a while after (maybe still, honestly haven't looked back and won't until the game is far improved.)

  • @zomtron

    Calling it denial is bit much... I'm not a fan of the game at all but you're dismissing the counter arguments. which is how horrible games get made. dismissing it or not caring about the comments is what harms these games the most and when you dismiss the defence it shows your not much better than the developers that do it.

  • @KingdomOfDimensions

    @KingdomOfDimensions

    zomtron My point is the defense usually given is garbage because the people giving it like the game solely because it's RWBY, and either use purely subjective reasons that it's good, or don't even try to do that and instead just deny the reasons why it's bad. Hence denial, which as I stated is actually harmful to the development of the game. Actual arguments are fine. I have yet to see many good ones, but that might be for very good reasons. I don't want to dislike the game, so if someone can justify the price, or time spent on the game, I'm certainly not going to just dismiss that.

    I, honestly, quite like this game. I enjoyed exploring the open environments and figuring out the different attacks to find the effective ones made me feel like a proper badass. That said, I went into it with low expectations, knowing that the game was being produced by a very small team (there was only a handful of developers working on this at first, if I remember rightly). Considering it's RT's first real attempt at a videogame (aside from a few minigames I think), I'd say they did alright. It's a good time sink and I still enjoy playing it on and off. I'm pretty sure the main reason players were disappointed is because their hopes were too high, and the developers just couldn't deliver with such limited time.

    Team attacks are achieved by hitting the enemy with a charged heavy attack after stunning them. You stun by shooting the enemy three times. There are various abilities your characters use based on comboing light and heavy attacks, both on the ground and in the air. These have a variety of applications and can be upgraded via the level up system to gain new enhancements, such as blake getting the ability to fire a wave that stuns mutiple enemies on her third shot instead of one (which allows me to set up multiple team attacks by stunning a whole group and then holding my heavy attack to full charge.) I figured all of these things out by playing. At least fucking try to be honest in your damn review.

    Two things that you got half wrong here are that with the monsters blocking, you have a heavy attack that breaks the block, and for the adds that explode when hit, you have a ranged attack to take care of them with. However, the game has no tutorial that explains this so unless you experiment and figure these things out you wouldn't know.

Remember, Monty Oum made crazy action filled battle scenes in huge environments for RvB and created RWBY. He knew such things were practically impossible in video game. To be honest (I'm a die hard RWBY fan) but i doubt a good chunk of us didn't really expect a whole lot of fantastic and amazing gameplay from the roosterteeth team to make an insane game that people would die for. Everyone does, as other commenters say, agree that the game is not more than just playing with friends who like RWBY, but also realize the game is pretty mediocre at best.

    Kenemon Not once did I say I was holding it to the quality of a AAA game. My point is there are other games, indie games. That have had a equal to or higher budget. And turned out fucking terrible, the list is massive. Games like Undertale, FNAF and so on are just a fluke, that rare likeable indie game that gains praise all across the internet, the club of indie games that do that is only in the double digits. While the amount of indie games out right now is in the tens of thousands.

    I will admit, what you say does hold merit. But this is a GAME. Yes, it has it's problems (game mechanics, limited perks/abilities, bland story, etc.) but, this is still just a game. I will probably, show this to my friends (who are also RWBY fans), and they will say the exact thing I said. It's just a game meant for fun. My way of fun, is giving people full control of maxed characters and seeing how far they make it on the hardest difficulty. Am I mean, maybe. But its all in good fun.

    And it even began as a fan-made type game too, that was picked up by RT to be made official. The thing to remember about Grimm Eclipse is the fact that the dev team for Roosterteeth is quite literally only 10 people. The RT Games staff was formed because of this game. On top of that, its also important to note that its going to keep being worked on and will have more and more added onto it as time goes on, including new characters and new chapters. Considering the small nature of the team, I feel like it is certainly getting a bad rep, especially compared to something like the recent Mighty No9, which was funded literally millions of dollars that the devs wasted when it had every right and opportunity to be incredible. This game on the other hand was created by a much smaller crew and funded by RT themselves. Im glad to see that they were able to at least release a solid game even with their limitations

    I got the game the day it was on steam, ever since the first week I have been unable to play it. This is because I saw you could put the graphics on "potato" . I thought it would be interesting to see just how bad the graphics could be.... Now I am unable to change it to anything better and it will say that it's different when i save the settings. I reported this on the steam forums and emailed the devs and this was all on the first patch. This has still not been fixed. I reinstalled the game after deleting all local content. and have tried resetting settings to default all to no avail.

    Honestly, the multiplayer to Grimm Eclipse was kinda fun, but the solo play felt like a complete afterthought. The solo play felt like they got the character sheets of Musou characters mixed up so your character, even in the first level often felt like a mook soldier fighting a series of enemy officers.

    Team Attacks actually aren't totally random. You can force one by countering and fully charging a heavy attack. Still arcane and the game never tells you this. Only reason I found out is because I read the old dev updates from early access.

    Isn't the game not even finished yet? I thought the game was still in beta or alpha mode. I don't know much about the game though so I don't know. I think a game should be judged once it passes alpha and then judged more once it passes beta. I just hope once the game is finished it gets WAY better because I agree with everything you said.

    They will continue to update and improve the game. Early access and beta don't really mean much anymore. I think of their "release" almost like a major update. The game definitely doesn't feel finished, and i doubt they would let a rwby game just die considering the effort they put into it.

    Overall although lacking content and providing linear gameplay and narrative, this game does bring a lot to the table in terms of being Rooster Teeths first proper game. It has good character progression and allows a decent amount of variety when it comes to leveling up each character. Each characters combos are varied and very artistic while dealing damage, which is something from the show. Voice acting is perfect. I love it.

    It would be great if they make it similar to God of Eater or Monster Hunter and can still stick to the current story line by missions being chapters/episodes in the series then just put extra missions along the way of prolonging it. then just updating it through dlc or like any mmorpg games game update with new missions and such. Since this is somewhat new to the game devt team on RT, the items, weapons, equipment, customization, etc can be followed up in later updates. with guns x swords theme added with elements, they can surely go do some bullet customization and melee effect attacks similar to god eater just to have a variety of stuff specially its a co-op play, having built a forum to it for suggesting anything would definitely help the game grew on each updates while still sticking to its main core of gameplay.
