Why Russian Su-35 Fighter Jet Downing In Ukraine War Has A Lesson For Xi Jinping's China

Ukrainian forces have reportedly shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter jet on April 3. A video showing the Russian jet also known as Flanker E in flames, plummeting from the sky, has gone viral. Ukraine claimed the Su-35 was shot down near Kharkiv by its anti-aircraft missile forces. The reported downing of a Sukhoi-35 by Ukraine could have important tactical lessons for the Chinese military. China holds the world’s second largest fleet of the fighter jets after Russia.

How he is still alive is beyond me; his Ukranian captors must have great restraint - it's not like the pilot ever had a chance of escaping, so shooting the first civilian that approaches him is more like brazen murder than warfare.

I have a feeling the author doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about. First of all, when showing the Chinese jet, he shows a domestically produced J-10 instead of a Su-35. He also insinuates that after the crash, China stopped buying more Su-35s. In reality, China only bought the Su-35s in first place to get access to their newer AL-41 engines. Before then, Russia would only sold them older AL-31 Saturn engines found in older Su-27 and Su-30 fighters. China originally purchased both planes from Russia and even had a contract to domestically manufacture the former. However, they ended up canceling that contract and making their own copy, the J-11. They even bought a Su-33 from Ukraine to copy and make the J-15 carrier based aircraft. Therefore it was because of this history of copying and reverse engineering Sukhois that Russia refused to just sell the AL-41 engine and instead forced China to buy a large batch of Su-35s. They knew China would just copy the engine but were desperate for money so got the best deal they could

It is a war, failures are bound to happen , Western countries are spreading there propaganda. If they had any balls they would not have cut russia from the media. Ukraine is getting weapons from the western countries. It's not Ukraine against russia, It's russia against the whole western world. Machine failures are normal, Had there been any Ukrainian casualties with western weapons or tanks or aircraft, would they run a news headlines about that. I am supporting no one but its all started due to NATO only, Nato is to be blamed. One day they will also get to taste their own medicine, only time will tell. After China , now few people believe in what America or western countries say. Bidden is focused on capturing weapon markets, that's it.

Russia still has a "whole force" doctrine, rather than separate branches of the armed forces. As a result, the generals see their aircraft as flying artillery. Due to military-technology based embargos since the 2014 annexation of Crimea, Russia has been forced, due to the cost of precision munitions, into using increasingly more 'dumb bombs' - a role the Su-35 was never really designed for. This tactic exposes the Su-35 to similar AAA threats as the Su-25s have been facing. A crazy use of what should be a true multi-role fighter.

I swear Russia military doctrine is very stingy and tight. Even when they bring in their best gear, they dont use them for what they are intended for. It was obvious that Russia needed to adopt a "Desert Storm" like operation but instead went ahead with 1940's tactics.

@@icysaracen3054 Totally different battlefield. Iraq was playground for tanks and air force for miles, miles and miles... US could roll on for hundreds of miles without any fear of being ambushed. Long distance give huge advantage for technical superiority, it is still good at closer ranges but much less. Ukraine is full of smaller and bigger forests, more small villages, towns, bridges... To be fair if you look into it Russia kind of tried it, but without full blown air bombardment, they sent columns to achieve strategic points, but holding supply lines turned to be impossible... There could be RPG team beside every turn. As I said, I think that this invasion was based on assumption that key points will be taken quickly and Ukrainians will be overpowered and surrender or even join Russian forces. I think Russian command was to confident and took poorly calculated risk. Lack of full scale air bombardment for me is a clear sign that they wanted to go in clean without unnecessary casualties and keep the infrastructure intact, again that just what I think and might be wrong.

Russia has to decide which economic model it wants to follow because so far neither communism nor mafia style economics have served it very well and because of this it will never be able to compete with the West or even China(whereby the best Chinese scientists would train in the West but return to China to make good their training),when it comes to opportunities to further their careers. Unfortunately like everything in life shortcuts aren't always possible and the shortage of funds will show up eventually and this war is a perfect example of that;Russia is enduring such heavy losses it didn't anticipate due in large part because the Ukrainians are not only more motivated because they are defending their homeland but largely because they are being armed with some of the latest weapons from the West, plus the fact that many of Russia's fighting equipment are badly maintained or simply obsolete when coming up against NATO'S finest!

4, This particular aircraft was on a Suppression of Enemy Air Defense (SEAD) mission. The electronic warfare pods can be seen on the wingtips and what looks like a Kh-31 anti radar missile is lying under the wing. These two things are only carried by aircraft going after surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites. The Kh-31 IS a precision guided munition, homing in on a radar that's transmitting. SEAD missions are the most dangerous missions on the modern battlefield because you offer yourself as a target in order to get the enemy to turn on their radars and shoot missiles at you. When the enemy does shoot at you, you locate and shoot at them and hope you are quicker on the draw and your missile hits them before their missile hits you. When the U.S. started doing SEAD missions in Vietnam with 19 special modified F-105s, every single American SEAD aircraft was shot down. You must practice SEAD mission A LOT to get it right. The Russian Air Force does NOT practice SEAD missions very much. SEAD aircraft are meant to attack radar guided missile sites and are pretty much helpless against heat seeking shoulder fired missiles when they fly at low altitude, with flares as their only defense.

From the fact that this Su-35 is largely intacted I'd guess it was a hit by a MANPADS missile. I think I see one busted KH-31 on the ground under the right wing. He was trolling for targets in the Ukrainian IADS and got popped by a MANPADS. Looks like the jet got slow before the hit, maybe a last ditch missile defense, but still took the hit. It is largely intacted and looks like it hit flat instead of diving into the ground. Most of the other birds downed by MANPADS do the same. The SA-11s and SA-10s tend to blow the target apart. I will say I am pleasantly surprised that the Stingers and Strelas continue to work as well as they appear to be. Also someone pointed out a lot of the more recent videos seem to show Russian birds not deploying IR Flares. Could they be out? Maybe.

They parked them a distance from the border where there was war but India knows their capability in the high Himalayas. They cannot fly fully fuelled and with munitions over the Himalayas because their engines are not powerful enough. ( Even India's indigenous helicopters can fly high into the Himalayas but western helicopters are not generally capable to do that.) Just because China has SU-30KK, so what? does not mean anything. China has to deploy its military at many places where it is facing enemies. India was ready at the LAC when the Chinese attacked but were unceremoniously repulsed - they thought India was going to fold like other small countries that China bullied. But China has no war waging experience. Antagonizing smaller countries with fighter jets is not the same as engaging in a real war. The Rafales, with its no escape munitions and with India-specific modifications are a real challenge to China. And India has the Brahmos, which in its category is the world's fastest supersonic missile that are carried by the SU-30MKI. So, India is prepared for any war against China even if it has superior numbers of fighter jets. Bottom line, China should worry. It was already embarrassed at the last conflict when they were repulsed. They did not specify their losses even though India did at 20 versus about 40 for China. If they attack with fighter jets, they will be put in their place in the Himalayas.

It is an unstoppable force against an immovable object. Who can say which way the wind would blow? Attack is always difficult and dangerous, and the Russian strategy was good. Russian pilots literally have to have visual sight to drop those dumb bombs or unguided rockets on their targets so they have to fly at very low altitudes which makes them more vulnerable to being shot down. Russia doesn't have the military budget to have thousands of precision guided weapons on hand. That's why you see them dropping dumb bombs all over Ukrainian cities killing innocent people. They can't accurately target the military personnel of Ukraine. Poor training plus poor weaponry begets poor results.
