Drones as artillery spotters is perhaps one of their more under-rated uses. The biggest limit with artillery is not knowing exactly where your targets are. A drone doesn't need to drop a bomb on a target if there are some big guns nearby to do the job.

There is one anti tank weapon that Ukraine uses that is even cheaper than the NLAW. It costs 10 000$ to knock out the Russian tank without any damage. It's the actual pile of 10 000$ that Russian tank crew is willing to take to surrender the vehicle to Ukraine. So for 10 grand you not only take out a tank of your enemy, but you actually get one for your military. Now that's cost effective..

Recently I saw a video that identified another weakness of the Russian military. Despite a decade of investment in modernizing Russias military, most of that money has been spent on Russia's nuclear arsenal, their navy, and they're "super weapons" like their 5th gen fighter jet and their hypersonic missile. With a relatively small amount actually being spent spent on the stuff needed to launch a conventional invasion into a country like Ukraine. Meanwhile Ukraine has spent the last 8 years getting their military ready for a Russian invasion, and nothing else

I was a “Manpads Crewmen” in the 80’s. We trained with the Stinger. It was a 2 month course. The Stingers are deadly for low altitude planes, helicopters, etc, and only come with 3 Batteries that are limited in time and are sophisticated cause it also contains a coolant for the gyro warhead. Once the batteries are sitting around for a specific time, they fail and can’t be used. The enemy can’t just develop an alternate power source for the Stingers. Back then, I think it was GE civilian reps would come out to the ammunition supply point with a specialized RV, that was transported from the U.S. to Germany to conduct random test on the inventory.

During an Avenger live fire exercise in December 1990, I had the fastest shoot down time for a BAT, Ballistic Aerial Target. It held for a couple of years and I was featured in training and promotion as a PFC being interviewed. I told the film crew the truth, that I could drink a cup of coffee, eat a donut, smoke a cigarette, and still shoot down six helicopters. They loved it, but it was also true. The TB2 also seems like an effective psychological weapon, some of you might remember that long tank column that was ambushed a while back near kyiv, intercepted russian communications indicate that the commander of the column was killed and the tank operator reporting it thought they were under attack by a TB2, aparently the ambush was performed with artillery but the russians have no way of knowing that, they think every unseen attack is a TB2 Morale among tank crews seems pretty low in general, earlier today i saw a video of yet another armored column ambush, the first tank was hit and caught fire, the driver fled, whats interesting is that the video seems to show the SECOND tank in the column also being abandoned despite the fact it wasnt hit, russian tankers seem to now live in absolute fear of ambushes

The prices you give in the comparison between NLAW and Javelin are sort of misleading. The entire Javelin system costs $200,000 but the missile on its own is between 2/5 to 1/3 of that cost. The launcher also comes with a separate optics and targeting system which can be used on its own or with a missile. On the other hand, NLAW is a single use weapon which has a trijicon ACOG as its optic. This is a roughly $1200 optic which does not have any extra guidance assistance.

This is only a part of the story. a) we see mostly footage of light infantry, but from the wreckage we can often guess that the destruction is mostly artillerys work - it would be hard to destroy entire convoy with just NLAWs, but artillery barrage can annihilate it in seconds. This is probalby the case when we see a convoy destroyed on a road, not even having time to disperse or look for any cover. b) the air superiority is denied not only by Stingers, but also by conventional AA systems, thanks to NATOs assistance in detection and surveilance. Basically Russians can either fly low to avoid getting detected from NATO's space, which puts them in Stinger range, or they can fly higher, outside of the Stinger range, but get detected early as a result and come at prepared and pre-targeted Ukrainian S-300 systems. And there are more portable AA systems, aside from Stinger - many post-Soviet ones, including modernized variants, as well. c) the help of NATO's surveillance also makes the TB2's more effective. Without it, TB2's would be shot down way more often, and need a lot of replacements to remain combat effective. Because Ukrainians often roughly know, where the Russian anti-air coverage is weak at the moment, they can use them without any punishment.

Obviously the Ukrainians have a large armament industry of their own, and are capable of autonomous production of artillery, armored fighting vehicles, mortars, tanks, small arms and so on, as well as the munitions for them (altough they have struggled to keep up, and NATO has helped with munitions of all calibers)

There are no TB2 left and havent been for probably at least a week. Stingers are overrated and have not actually been doing a lot - but there is a variety of MANPADs being used. Seen footage of at least 5 failing to bring down a single aircraft. Ukrainian air defense is virtually non existent. They would have very few if any S-300s left. There is footage of a compound of S-300s that were destroyed. Why they werent deployed I have no idea but they are no good now. The reason why we only see footage of infantry is because thats all Ukraine really has left and they can only fight guerrilla style. Only amateurs dont understand this war was over weeks ago.

Javelins (and other anti-tank stuff, including RPG, Stugna-P, NLAW, Panzerfaust etc.) are used to destroyed already scattered armor hiding around the forests and in villages - but these are secondary missions. The difference has been in logistical planning, tactics, etc. The Ukrainians have essentially been preparing for this invasion since 2014, while Putin seems to have blundered in with an army not suited for the task at hand.

Since yesterday there's another game changing weapon system used by the Ukrainian military. Its the locally developed anti ship cruise missile called the Neptune. This subsonic ASM with 300 km range and a relatively small 160 kg warhead, has managed to hit and sink the pride of the Russian Black Sea fleet - Moskva cruiser. Let's not forget that this 12 500 tonne cruiser was protected by a multiple defensive systems, supposedly the best Russia has in it's arsenal. From the long range anti missile system S-300 F, which is a navalised version of their vaunted S-300 SAM, to the CWIS system with its 2 multi barrel guns that spew out 12 000 rounds per minute. Of course Russia touted these weapons as the best naval protection systems in the world, superior to US Navy's Aegis + SM family of missiles + ESSM + RAM + CWIS with a single multi barrel gun that shoots 4500 rpm. And last but not least, the Neptune anti ship missile was developed from the old Soviet era system, in a record time after Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014. Ukrainian weapons experts have managed to develop and field the anti ship cruise missile in only 8 years, that managed to sink the ship that was guarded by systems developed by, supposedly, some of the best missile experts in the world? I predict a significant dip in the interest of the international community, for buying Russian weapon systems.

That seems a lot for one shot but is a tiny amount compared to a $3 million tank. Destroying one enemy tank is like buying one of your own, so the economics is obvious, especially if you are being given them for free!

I’m thinking of 10 tanks as 2 or 3 platoons, so not even a company let alone a battalion. But I was thinking of Tank Divisions. Makes sense now ! Also explains why troop transport destruction ratio has been so high. There are 3x of of them in each BTG. The artillery and MLSR ratio is huge too, it’s enormous firepower in a small group. But as you said lite on infantry so Ukrainian ambushes with AT are making short work of them

Then you need a lot of preparation and this involves equal measures of smart and money. And during the war, the supply is key. Armies use a lot of munitions and gas, soldiers need to eat. Of course, once the reserves run out and you can't produce new ones... So it's not exactly money, but about economics... but these are related.
