The Russian Economy is puzzling to look at. On one hand it is the most resource rich nation on earth, on the other it somehow has a smaller GDP than Italy. It makes sense then, why, after the start of the Russian Ukrainian war, and it being subjected to the most comprehensive sanctions imposed on a major power in nearly a century, many speculated its complete collapse. Yet this never happened. In fact, it has exceeded even the most optimistic predictions, shrinking by a measly 2.1% while this year it is expected to return to growth, outpacing the United Kingdom and Germany. But how is this even possible? Has Putin really created an economy impervious to sanctions? The answer to this question is embedded within the very fabric and history of the Russian state we know of today. After all, armed conflicts are frequently determined by economic power, while the intricate interplay between history and politics plays a crucial role in shaping a nation's economy and how it responds in times of crisis. So what is exactly going on, why has Russia’s Economy not collapsed?

It's also ridiculous to believe that because some experts have got some predictions wrong that therefore all experts are always wrong. For example, you wouldn't throw away the entire field of medicine because your doctor misdiagnosed you. Even though I barely know anything about the Russian economy, IMO, the conclusion logically follows the analysis: With the budget in record deficit and oil & gas revenues down by half, the inefficient parts of the economy reliant on the state will struggle to grow over the long term and the mass exodus of skilled labor and foreign investment triggered by the war will prevent the small part of the economy not reliant on the state from saving the situation. Congratulations to Casual Scholar. Excellent topic to discuss. I don't know, the collapse of the Russian economy has been predicted for almost 10 years, following the seizure of Crimea. I remember that on one occasion a Republican senator in the United States Congress asked a high-level economic official during the Donald Trump administration, who was invited to speak about a new package of sanctions against Russia, "What should be done to bring Russia to its knees economically?", The official's response was as follows: "We cannot cause the greatest pain to the Russian economy, without at a certain moment the world economy beginning to feel pain as well." I do not think that bringing down the Russian economy is an easy task as described by this channel, and even if it is, we must remember that the Russian people have managed to survive much more difficult situations than those projected here. On the other hand, one point to keep in mind is that the sanctions against Russia only come from the US side and its allies, but the emerging nations that together make up more than two thirds of the world's population, and that some of which are pointed out by famous consultancies companies such as PwC, as those that will dominate the global economic spectrum in just over two decades, they have excellent and long-standing economic and diplomatic relations with Russia, which they do not see as a threat to their interests and vice versa. These great emerging economic powers, in a short time, will also master all kinds of advanced technologies, such as microchip manufacturing, artificial intelligence, etc., and Russia will have access to these great markets, and the use of their technological products. In other words, it is clear that doors have been closed (it remains to be seen if they are forever), but others are open, and others will surely open. If the world remained static like a photograph, I could understand what this channel explains, but on the contrary, it is changing and dynamic.

To be honest, all these talks about Russian economy collapsing because several countries put sanctions on them seemed ridiculous even in February of 2022. Russia is probably the least possible country to collapse since 1) They live under sanctions since 2014 and have learned to deal with them pretty well by finding new partners, creatings new industries inside Russia, getting sanctioned things via third countries, and keeping the currency afloat. The living standards barely changed despite all sanctions 2) Just 30 years ago Russia was in almost total isolation from the West as a part of the Soviet Union. Who if not Russians know how to live in economic isolation and being self-sifficient? I'm not buying any predictions about Russian economy collapsing in the future - it didn't collapse at the worst time in 2022, but now it should collapse after they had a long time to adapt and make plan B and plan C for resolving every problem? Seems like wistful thinking.

Worst time for Russia was not the 2022, but 90s. *THAT* was a collapse: organised criminals, corrupted to the core authorities and total poverty. All that we've had after, even in the 2022, is just heaven compared to these times. It was something like the Great Depression on the post-soviet space. And if we've gone through that, nothing can stop us now.

What current economists don't understand is that an economy restructured on very little debt permeates throughout the system and drastically reduces the dependency or immediacy of an individual to have weekly or monthly cash flow. Therefore, if you actually owned your house, your car, your own water well, one milk cow, 6 chickens, 2 brooder pigs, a small fish pond and 20 or so acres for fodder, there's very little damage any government can inflict on you. This is the lesson I learned from my parents 80 years ago who survived the depression, kept all their farm land and lived a quite and peaceful life until an old age. The only real loss they ever suffered was when the banks went bust and they lost every single dollar from a wheat crop they had just harvested. I traveled the world and worked as a consultant for many years, but I will die peacefully in the same place I was born and have no debt. It's surprising how little actual money you need to do everything you want to do when your actual physical surroundings are totally secured by the work of your own hands and your food sources are many times what you actually need. Good Luck Youngsters. I'm afraid few of you have ever experienced what I've described here.

I don't disagree at all with your analysis, but you can however look at this another way. Debt is only a theoretical cost that exists on paper, so the removal of repayments doesn't actually immediately damage the productive economy, rather it tends to stem the flow of additional credit, which has a greater effect on non-productive assets such as house prices. Hence debt forbearance and rescheduling of payments can be used extensively to prop up an economy in hard times, as we have seen since 2008. As long as too many debtors don't actually default, everything can be re-adjusted and the productive economy (for goods and services) largely caries on; thus debt adjustment can be used like an economic shock absorber. OTOH, in a largely cash based economy like Russia, any economic shock (such as high inflation) is immediately seen as reduced consumer demand for good and services - for example, compared to western countries, Russians spend a much larger proportion of their income directly on goods and services (because they have very low housing debt). So any economic shock (i.e. high inflation) is quickly seen as a sharp decline in consumer demand, which then in turn feeds back into further decline of the productive economy. The Russian government themselves, have expressed the need to greatly increase consumer spending, which tends to suggest this is what is already happening. TLDR; There is a big difference between the ability of an individual to survive difficult times (e.g. by keeping chickens etc.), and the effects of a consumer slump on the wider economy. The Russian population will survive the hardships somehow, just as they have done many times before, but the wider economy (and by extension the government) are in big trouble.

But thanks to sanctions of 2014 Russia launched the "import replacement " programm, as a result it very quickly turned from importer of food unto exporter of food. The same is happening now: thanks toWestern industrial sanctions Russia is quickly develops its own industry. So can it work long term? The answer is YES. The ethnic minorities in Russia could have 14 children per 1 woman and they'd *still* would be a minority. By that logic, the U.S will become Amish because the amish have higher birthrates that U.S regulars. Another important detail is that Russias birthrates aren't in the decline, they're just stagnant, meaning they rise and fall every 5 years. What this stupid author also did was comparing Russian birthrates to the European ones. The European birthrates are below replacement levels.... the funny part is this: *the EU counts migrant birthrates as european ones, so basically, even the 1.45 child rate, is inflated by people who don't speak a letter of European*

First one was WW2 where 30+ millions of Soviet citizens were tortured, gassed, burned alive and murdered by Hitler and country was in ruins. 90s for Russia were the second worst. It became complete anarchy. Transition from very safe state with 100% guaranteed benefits (guaranteed place to live, free education on all levels, free health care, cheap food and transportation, guaranteed place to work etc.) To complete degradation of all even very basic social services, like hospitals, schools, emergency services. Everything was collapsing. While collective west was celebrating collapse of Soviet Union and was moving forward, life in Russia not only stopped, but quickly went decades back. It turned from very safe country to place where you was guaranteed to be robbed or even killed if you went to different neighborhood or even for just returning from somewhere late. You was jumped and robbed just for new looking jacket. Unemployment was crazy. Soviet Union had plenty of world class manufacturing experts, but all this manufacturing plants were sold for pennies on a dollar or were closed completely. People were paid in product or not at all. All these experts on very expressive equipment had to manufacture some basic equipment like chairs, tables. World class chemist were preparing some washing products (or even medicine without any license, but it was better than nothing). Please correct me , if ai recall correctly Russia was also paying all debts that Soviet Union took after collapse, while other Soviet Block countries didn't do it. All fine-tune and intricate manufacturing machine of Soviet Union collapsed (manufacturing plants for different parts were scattered across it, many important plants stayed for example in Ukraine etc, so it made all those plants useless as Soviet Union had their own standards and was not able to buy from western supplier). Country was robbed by local and western Billionaires and governments. It was scary time and many, people were dying, freezing to death on the streets, talking their own lives. If we compare with what is happening right now in Russia is maybe 1 or 2% as severe as what people survived only 20 years ago. Forced mobilisation that was in fall of last year was not popular amongst population, but besides that, not much changed. (People can't pay with Iphone pay, so more people use Android or just cards, but it not significant).

Well actually I would argue that the last few years of the zar and the 30's from 1927 onwards with Stalin were a shitshow were more people died than in the 1990's. still not as worse as the 1940's But that is already mostly dead memory while many remember the 1990's. Russia took, the loans, of the soviet unions yes, it also took the seat on the UN, and the atomic weapons and the loans were not that many anyway, as most capitalist bankers didn't see a communist government that was liable to disown private rich people as a good and reliable debtor. It already paid everything back while the the brits pay still for some loans back from pre ww1 (the interest rate is of course different matter.) It's also not all out economic war yet and will likely never be unless russia uses a certain type of weapon in Ukraine. For now it's mostly things that hurt and slow down the building of new military supply chains and things that destroy the russian federal budget russia still sells it oil, but doesn't make much profit with that anymore that goes to the indians etc. Any realistic outlook on the impact of sanctions says that they will not be felt imminently but slowly yes the budget is less now for military spending but each year without investment, is basically 4-12% less economic growth over 10 year's. so something between 0,3% and 1,2% less growth year by year. Personally I don't think Russia will collapse or any such thing, it may happen but is unlikely, what is much more likely a slow decline to a nation that is a great power only in land mass and nuke stock while the army is hollowed out and the economy is shitty but not terrible. I would not be surprised if Russia by 2030 is overtaken by Mexico in economic performance while the war can end in some form of white peace or extended sometimes broken ceasefire were ukraine likely get's more ground as time goes on.

They can do that fast because it is communism. Global trends and alliance currently favours Russia. The west strongest hold is the US dollar, and we have seen emerging countries moving away from it. The large population countries will only become richer and bigger to replace Russian dependence on the west. This is more an issue for the west, alliance with Russia is more beneficial to them. Russia borders more countries that needs them than Europe borders other part of the world. Change is the only constant, global trade will move on without the west.

Yes, way more pathetic. Russia’s economy should be much larger considering how big it is. It has a population of 144 million and is the largest country on earth with an abundance of resources, yet only has a gdp of 1.7 trillion, which is less than Canada’s gdp of $1.9 trillion despite having roughly 3.5 times Canada’s population. In fact, the U.S state of Texas alone has a gdp that’s almost the same size as Russia’s entire economy despite having only having a population of 27 million. So while $1.7 trillion is indeed a lot of money for a nation to have, Russia should technically have way more than that for it’s size and where it sits in the world stage. Just the fact that Texas nearly has the same sized economy as Russia shows just how poor and “pathetic” Russia’s economy is.

@@ZZZ2573 I can’t believe I have to explain this because this is basic knowledge. So if just a single U.S state has more money per capita than the world’s second most powerful military, then it’s pretty clear that Russia’s economy is pretty bad. And just the fact that your only argument is that Texas’s economy would fail without the U.S shows that you have done little to no research and barely have any knowledge on this topic. constantly talks about oil and gas, although their share of influence on the Russian economy is approximately 25-30%. author also exaggerates that oil export revenues give such an increase to Russia's income. Russia receives its main income from domestic production. It is true about technological exports and microchips, but focusing on this is nonsense. When there was a disconnection from Swift, Russia survived thanks to its own microchips. 90% of bank cards in Russia operate on the MIR system and microchips "Mikron" produced in Russia. Also, Russia has its own payment system (similar to SWIFT), developed in 2015-2016. Russia is similar to Israel in terms of technology, which is used only for domestic consumption. West does not take into account many things at all, only statistics, but being a Russian, I will say that statistics don't work in Russia, because the "gray economy" is very strong (this is a legacy of the 90s), this is bad, but Russia cannot get out of it, even wages fees are charged with bonuses higher than the wages themselves by 50-800%("gray wage"), but the statistics only take into account the "white wage", the same with the state budget, there are many secret passages in it.

Moreover, Russia still receives western brands of everything through parallel import, but it looks like consumers found their replacements among local and Asian brands as they are much cheaper. At the same time local businesses are really booming, factories are rising like mushrooms after the rain. I myself work in manufacturing sector and a project manager of a new factory project in Russia. The local businesses are expanding at the pace that lead to lack of workforce for the factories. The peoples (the vast majority being ethnically Russian) of these areas democratically voted in referenda to cede from Ukraine (since Ukrainian army was killing them.. literally - since 2014 - with USA assistance and direction). Initially, they became independent republics, but very quickly thereafter joined the Russian Federation for protection against the USA / NATO forces wearing Ukrainian uniforms (including the ASOV and Bandera nazi brigades). Crimea was NOT illegally annexed by Russia. Even under the Soviet Union it was a republic in its own right. When in Ukraine it had special / additional rights compared to other parts of Ukraine. Western companies “pulled out of Russia”… NO, they were ordered to pullout or face American sanctions. Not quite the same thing,.. Cut export and they're deep sh*t, because they don't produce modern technology nor anything of value that can sustain their economy on their own for long. The reasons for that are poor education, low standard on living, declining population and relying on western countries to provide essential technology. And sure, they can become vassal of China, being completely depended on them, but knowing history it a) it won't work 2) even if it does, it needs decades of build proper infrastructure 3) russian economy is too small to be of use to China.

The reason for the survival of the Russian economy is that Russia is a self-sufficient country. It has all the necessary resources and developed agriculture, providing the population with cheap food. Russia also has its own industry. But in the West they say - we do not see your goods (unlike Chinese). But Russia did not set the task of exporting manufactured goods, but only to provide itself with them (import substitution), which was successful. Russians produce their own ships, trucks, subway cars, train cars, locomotives for railways, buses, trolleybuses, light-tonnage vehicles, helicopters, etc. The only thing that is bad is passenger cars (previously they were produced in Russia by Western companies that left). But China is helping here, which is already building factories in Russia for the production of passenger cars.... Problems also arose in civil aviation. But it turned out that many of our aircraft design companies (while the government was buying American and European airliners) were developing and designing the same Russian analogues. And now they will be launched into a series (the USSR once produced 20% of aircraft in the world). In short, sanctions could have an effect against a small country like the Czech Republic or Switzerland. But not against Russia, which has long borders with other states and many allies.

I think its much better to learn how these strange "-2.5% GDP" figures get born to fully understand that .. theese numbers don't tell anything about Russia's economy. Just shows you that commodity resources still can really make or break an economy and bordering the 2nd largest economy in the world has given it enormous leverage.

@@Commievn BRICS doesn't exist de facto, their pathetic "allies" that are even more pathetic than Russia are now backstabbing Russia. Just look at what India and China have been doing to Russia. Russia is doomed.

The connection between sector A and sector B you describe exists in the European Union also, with the difference that the European Union is full of debts and has no oil on its own except for Norway. At the same time, if it is true that Russia lacks a proper protection of propeties and private business, sorry for them, but they are doomed to fail...only if it is true and it is endemic of course.
