Rwanda may be the most unlikely economic success story that has ever existed. The tragic events of 1994 destroyed any semblance of a modern nation state. Yet Rwanda has been one of the fastest developing nations in the last 20 years. In almost every metric that measures the quality of a nation, Rwanda has made remarkable improvements that can only be described as a miracle. How has Rwanda done it and is its miracle just too good to be true?

As a South Korean, it is shocking to see how similar Rwanda's economic miracle is to Korea's "Miracle on the Han River." We had a president/dictator very similar to Kagame named Jung-hee Park. Korea grew from nothing to a functioning middle-income nation during his rule. We eventually became democratic and his iron-fist legacy was tarnished, but many people still appreciate and respect his efforts in Korea's economic growth. Hope Rwanda follows the same path as us and eventually joins the world stage as a democratic and developed nation. Let's show the world that former colonies can do as well as former colonizers. 🇰🇷❤🇷🇼

Hopefully Rwanda can also achieve economic and social developments while giving attention to work-life balance of its people. Avoid going too much into the footsteps of some countries that are notorious for forcing their workers to do overworking from early morning until late night. Such culture will have a great impact on people's work-life balance and also a country's birth rates.

Having more than 10 cows would immediately put you in Tutsi class , Having lower than that would make you Hutu and ‘‘twas were living off the other works other than farming and agriculture. 3.2004 Rwanda abolished the Tribal identification and today it is punishable by Rwandan Law. that's something people don't want to admit, democracy isn't a cure all and can even be dangerous. Another example is somalia. In its Islamic sultanates and its later communist dictatorship it was fine. Tribal violence was controlled and people were not just meeting their needs, but many were actually doing well. In both democracy periods somalia was a weak and barely existing state. Quite simply democracy doesn't work for it due to the tribes being so antagonistic to eachother and nepotism and corruption being so high. Sometimes you need a bit of structure more than you need freedom. Too much freedom leads to chaos, not enough leads to dystopia.

This was the playbook for nearly all the colonial powers. Go into the country and find the factions who don't like each other. Then pit them against one another and make yourself into the neutral peacekeeper to justify your continued rule over them. The British and Dutch were masters of this in India, Rwanda, South Africa, Nigeria, Congo. When you can make them hate each other more than you, you'll be able to rule over them without them asking why they even submit in the first place.

When I was in middle school that had a Tutsi man who fled the Rawandan Genocide as a child and became a refugee come and talk to us. What he saw and described was very disturbing. It’s scary to hear about the true horror of genocide straight from the source. He talked about the evils of hate and how he channeled his own hate towards the people who killed his family towards educating himself and working hard. He was lucky to make a life for himself and move to the US. It’s amazing that Rawanda was able to recover from that disaster and become what it is today. I hope other nations in Africa can find models to succeed as well. What Europe did to them is just so sad and has several crippled them, but eventually I believe they will catch up to us and possibly even overtake parts of the West. The more educated and prosperous Africa becomes the more prosperous the entire world will become.

@@mebsrea 😂😂 you don't know what you are saying, In Kenya we had the same mentality as you have, our government used to invest a lot of money in family planning initiatives, but when census and demographic studies were done, we were shocked to realise that we have counties with land mass similar to countries like Israel and Rwanda but with less than 250,000 inhabitants, At first we thought it was a good thing, so the government started building railway, roads, electricity in those areas and promoting towns into city status expecting mass migration from Nairobi and Mombasa to those places but instead no one was interested in moving to those places where you have to walk for kilometres to meet another person, in Kenya we have empty roads and railway stations that kids go to play in because no one is using them, we tried to attract investments to those regions but foreigners and local investors prefer big markets like Nairobi, majority of companies which usually move to Kenya like Volkswagen usually stay for a few years then go to South Africa because the Kenyan market is to small, Nigeria's problem is lack of vision and political goodwill, you people complain that you are too many but in reality cities like Tokyo have 45 million inhabitants yet they think they are underpopulated, you people have a population big enough to attract investments like China and India but small economies like Rwanda, Ghana and Kenya are beating you, Let me tell you a secret, the reason why we Kenyans want East Africa Federation to form is not because we love our neighbors, it's just because few people want to send investments to us so we want to use our neighbors population as a way to promote them as markets for investors in Kenya and in fact the rapid growth in middle class families in Kenya has reduced growth from 2.6 to 2.1%, so we are worried that we might end up like Germany and have our culture go extinct due to migration from our East African brothers replacing us,

I'm sorry, what would you like the rest of the world to do? Colonise Africa again but develop it this time? We all know that won't work, not least because Africans won't accept that. Suffering and Poverty is the natural state of agricultural civilisations, including the ones in Europe and Asia, and this is pretty self-evident if you look at the lives of people living in them. Throwing money at Africa also won't help, unless they have visionary, benevolent, smart, and non-corrupt leaders, who will invest wisely in their countries. Building successful nations is hard, there's a reason it took the west all of history to get where they are today, and there was plenty of violence and suffering inflicted on their own people (before mentioning other) that was necessary to become as rich as they are. But there will definitely be African countries that become successful nations, and imo Ghana is probably one of them.

Super interesting video! So interesting to learn about the building stones for a successful society. It seems that the main driver behind any countries' success is corruptness. Paul Kugame is clearly an authoritarian leader but is not too corrupt. As long as value can flow freely in a country without abuses of power it will grow by itself. Therefore a system of centralised control can work, but only if the centralised controlling party doesn't abuse its power (too much). It seems like history is just an endless repetition of natural growth followed by corruptness and greediness, human kind constantly needs to fight its own greed in order to get ahead which is just constantly happening in cycles. Cycle of greed and misery followed by cycle of growth and prosperity. Rwanda is an amazing example of that.

On a serious note it's really not surprising to see that Rwanda and Botswana are doing so well. The answer to their success is really obvious when you think about it and it's because they speak one language, they have one very similar culture and they are one country before their tribe. As a businessman, I recognize that if my team is pulling in different directions there is no way we're going to be profitable. We need to speak the same and we need to have the same agenda. It's great to have people from different backgrounds bring a New perspective, but at the end of the day we all need to agree on where we're heading.

I appreciate the many insights given in this video, but I would suggest researching further into the pre-colonial history of Rwanda, as there are many discrepancies in the video. The biggest one being the timeframe of arrival of Tutsi to Rwanda, and the nature of distinction between Hutu and Tutsi, which was based largely on socio-economic status, rather than ethnicity. This can be clearly seen in the act of "kwihutura" (which literally translates to un-hutuing oneself) in which a man who accumulated wealth (mainly in the form of cattle) would rise to the status of Tutsi and vice versa if a Tutsi were to lose his wealth.

Hi Ms. T. All thanks to our great President and the utmost love He has for his nation and the whole of Africa. Plz visit Rwanda sometime. It's far better than they say in the video with an incredible security level and no.1 place to visit and do business from. Plus, it's super clean everywhere. You won't regret it when you visit. I promise. By the way, Tutsi People never migrated from anywhere. They are Rwandans since the beginning of time 😉

he Belgian are africa enemy number one !! They divided Africa in 1884 and and caused tribal indifferences and UK and France and company caused the middle east Israel and Palestine division by tribe as well , This notion of division by tribe seemed to be used regularly all over the country even in USA and Europe is doing the same . Africa must be aware of such toxic system now they enforcing LBTQL toxic to Africa now ....

This is so relatable. Let me tell you why I'm an ethiopian, and literally everything you said (only partially the tariffs part) is the same thing happening in ethiopia right now. Increasing agricultural output, especially coffee, improving telecommunications and especially cyber security, services and industries sectors, beautifying the country, especially addis ababa, increasing tourism, going up the value chain, improving air and land transports because of being landlocked, increasing education efficiency and effectiveness, as well as it's quality (its being very hard and competitive), attracting foreign direct investments, improving the police forces and security, reducing unemployments, improving health care, centralizing the political power (for good, we (ethiopians) hate excessive decentralization) and making the ethnic groups who hate each other, like each other and finally ending the civil war (which covers only 5 percent of the country's population, not as large as foreign non African medias shows). It's like the prime minister, Dr. Abiy, is just doing the right things to do in a country like ethiopia. Salut to Rwandans 🇷🇼 from ethiopia 🇪🇹

Another great achievement is Family Planning. Less kids, but better fed and educated is key to reduce poverty.

“We Ethiopian hate excessive decentralization” lol more like one ethnic group loves the one language one religion one Ethiopia nonsense. Like Ethiopia haven’t tried it before….. Just make sure u don’t end up like Yugoslavia chasing that impossible dream 🤣🤣

@@alimo3011 the thing is that, there have to be more centralization in military, education system, economy and bureaucracy, because bureaucracy is worse under federal system, especially in a country as corrupt as ethiopia, where every government employee seeks more money, as much as possible
