Why RRR Works and the MCU's Phase Four Doesn't

Marvel's phase 4 has gotten mixed reactions from audiences. Meanwhile, RRR is a Tollywood film that took the cinematic world by storm in 2022. It has many of the same qualities as MCU films, from the special effects to the over-the-top action. But what sets RRR apart? In this video, I give five reasons why RRR works more effectively than the MCU's phase 4.
Intro 0:00-1:56
Respect for Main Characters 1:57-2:51
The Ordinary Becomes Extraordinary 2:52-5:10
The Stakes 5:11-6:48
Better Drama 6:49-9:15
Energetic and Unique 9:16-10:21
Outro 10:22-11:14

What's so refreshing is that RRR is 100% earnest. In Hollywood, there's been a growing undercurrent of jaded cynicism. Everything needs to be lampshaded, nothing can be too silly or upbeat without someone commenting on it. Compare that to RRR, where the fight scenes and action set pieces are larger than life, but the emotion and intent is geniune. Bheem and Raju are likened to forces of nature because of their indomitable wills and powerful emotions, and the audience is allowed to connect to that.

I stumbled across the Indian film industry over 4 years ago. It’s one of the best things that I’ve ever discovered. Their run times are usually 2 hrs +, which gives you the opportunity to fully connect with them. The emotions are always intense. One thing every non-Indian might miss is that Ram here has the archetype of God Ram in Hinduism in the story of Ramayana and Bheem here has the Archetype of Bheem from Mahabharata, both being Ancient Hindu scriptures. While God Ram is worshipped for always thinking beyond himself, Bheem is known for his Brute strength. God Ram saw the bigger picture, and Bheem saw the smaller picture. RRR humanised both Archetype to show how hard it is in reality and the clashes. In the end, Ram in RRR, wears the clothes just like God Ram, because that's for the (Indian/Hindu) audience to make instant connection. That's what excited me, seeing Ram in an image of God Ram, and Bheem as a powerful brute. That's all. 🙏 Jai shree ram

The Naacho Naacho dance scene isn't just a dance break, it's very touching and showcases and develops the characters very well - Raju rescuing Bheem, Jenny rejecting Britain's mistreatment of Indians, the British men joining the dance out of anger and getting beaten, Jenny cheering for Bheem, Raju falling early to make Bheem look better, and then Bheem unable to walk because he danced so hard.

  • @jaydeepsen4769

The symbolism of Raju as the fire and Bheem as water was shown so perfectly throughout the film. Even during the song 'Dosti' which literally translates to friendship in English there is a sequence where they're running with a train between them and the train releases steam, symbolising that as their bond of friendship is getting stronger, the fire is mixing with water and what do you get when you mix fire and water? You get steam.

Not really, I didn’t notice the symbolism at all until the end where they turned into physical embodiments of gods and it felt completely thrown in there. Only people who are Hindu might have caught on. And in the beginning there was no connections on Rama’s part. Even my friend whose Hindu felt the last hour lacked and felt they should started connecting the characters and gods from the beginning. Other than that the rest of the film was good.

  • @jaydeepsen4769

    @jaydeepsen4769

@@hershey1141 the last reference wasn't to a god. It was actually how the real life character of Alluri Ramaraju used to dress. That person used to wear the saffron dress with the bow and arrow. That's what he became at the end of the movie. Because in real life after that period he was known to have fought against the British. Your Hindu friend probably doesn't know the details and history of India or is born and raised outside India. Also, the inteRRRval fight scene with the animals at the party had the fire and water scene as well. Even in their introduction scenes, one had fire and the other water. Those were the first shots when he saw them.

RRR reawakened my faith in the magic of movie making. Probably the most surprising cinematic experience I’ve yet to have. Modern masterpiece……period. The MCU (all 4 phases) pales in comparison in all categories I can think of besides some of the cgi. Heart, fun, imagination, originality, beauty, art(music and dance) and “awe-factor.” These two men are the closest things to superheroes we’ve seen yet.

That's sort of staple of this director Rajamouli. All of his movies, from socio-fantasy to pure mass entertainer have one thing in common which is Human element. He will make you yearn for the characters and connect emotionally. Also ,his villains are always insanely formidable and/or cruel because he feels that the protagonist is only as good as the antagonist. You have a real bad guy in your movie, your hero will be equivalently good. If you haven't already, I would definitely recommend his other movies - Baahubali 1&2, Eega. Eega is about a guy reincarnated as a house-fly. Its experimentalist by Telugu/Indian movie standards but the storyline and screenplay tugs at your heartstrings.

We've seen origins of most of these heroes, seen em struggling, learning and growing to what they're now but most of the phase 4 characters somehow become top tier heroes as soon as they're introduced which strips you off the connection with the character, people loved Wonder Woman 1 irrespective of it being a female superhero movie, people wanted a great Black Widow movie and most people supported Black Panther Wakanda Forever only few people didn't like Ironheart which is understandable because the suit looks very cartoonish compared to other mecha suits in MCU. the best scene in the movie for me is RCT's portrayal of Lord Rama. And RCT is the best portrayal of Lord Rama after Senior NTR. From directing serials to making world notice of his cinema, SSR has come a long way and long way to making international movies.

I’ve never really seen any movies from India. But my gosh, this movie was epic amazing! Makes me wish Hollywood still made good movies. I love how the protagonists are shown as friends without it trying to make it look like something more like Hollywood does. The action is stylistically over the top and the movie knows this and takes big advantage of that! And like you said, it respects its characters. And NO IDENTITY POLITICS BABY!!!!😆 The movie actually wants to tell a good story and it does! And I love the dance scenes so much and the one at the end perfectly caps off the movie well

As an Indian, I'm gonna say that nothing that RRR did in terms of storytelling and themes is very original in context of Indian blockbuster cinema. It's all done before. What sets it apart from the others tho is it perfect execution. Whilst the budget may seem really small when compared to MCU, RRR is the most expensive Indian movie ever made. The only reason why S.S Rajamouli got such a big budget for the movie was because of how popular his "Bahubali" movies were (with way less budget mind you). As a result of the big budget, the scale of the movie is very epic and the cgi is still very good. Much of the shots in the forest in the 3rd act and other varieties of settings were completely shot in front of a green screen, but they did it so well it's hard to tell. So whilst the animals don't look as realistic, the Cinematography in other shots are immaculate

Even them flexing their strength in the 1st song, Raju flexing his strength in arms n Bheem his strength in legs and also overall strength in rope pulling game(forgot the name of the game lol)... I just want to sit and enjoy every bit of the movie. I feel the stories should not be illogical that is where people get disconnected with the movie. I think a lot of us(indian) want to just laugh, cry, and feel every emotion of the movie. So people just don't look for logic in action scenes.

I am from india and lately I have hard time to watch Hollywood movies and series because of woke politics and almost in every movie they lecture their what to think and what is right , no one likes to be lectured some of us want good time , fun time watching movie and that’s why RRR works so well , director SS RAJAMOULI don’t want to lecture their , he himself said that recently in an interview that I don’t like any kind of politics and lecture people in my movies .

Some reasons why Hollywood wouldn't greenlight RRR: Two strong male leads; the supporting female character doesn't act like the two strong male leads in order to help her cause; no one is gratuitously gay; there are no stupid wisecracks that undercut the action; it was apparently written by well-adjusted adults, not woke adolescents with unresolved issues; a main theme is acquiring guns in order for oppressed people to free themselves; and if you don't happen to like the film, the creators aren't likely to take to Twitter to accuse you of being racist, anti-female, or homophobic. Also, it's based on an original idea, not a played-out franchise pandering to a seeming lemming-like audience.

It doesn't go with the agenda. Imagine two strong male characters expressing masculine strength and friendship. It's inconceivable by Hollywood standards right now! And we a necessitous for that so very much. So, it needs to come from somewhere else. India is doing a good job.

I have a habit of posting my review of almost every movie I watch, and for most of them posting right when I finish watching them. But, RRR is perhaps the only film which shook me entirely in such a broad and Speechless way, that I couldn't just able to literally think of a SINGLE DAMN word besides simple MASTERPIECE, or BRAVO, OR CORE BRILLIANCE, etc that my hands didn't let me write anything! SERIOUSLY, this is perhaps THE BEST MOVIE, A ROARING INTENSE AND BADASSLY SAVAGE AND TRUTH SHOWING FILM OF THE CENTURY OF CINEMA, OR CINEMAS!!! Nothing less to say it, and I mean every single compliment I have for this film, which is a patriotic emotion for me and a million or billions now, whether its about Cinematography, the ACTING.... .... .. THE CHOREOGRAPHY AND KILLING CHORUS OF NAATO NAATO, EDITING, STORY!!!!!! NO WORDS FOR ANYTHING MAN! BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO SEE THIS AND EVEN BLESSED WHO WITNESSED THIS AT THREATRES!!!

It’s very rare that I think a movie has any business being 3 hours or more with a few exceptions like LoTR . Well RRR is another one I wouldn’t mind it being longer . Ram and Bheam had a 20 min friendship montage just riding around and I love that

The greatest thing about the RRR movie is its symbolism, it's like "This is America song" where in front of your eyes entertainment is happening but behind the scenes a true story is hidden. S. S. Rajamouli being a thousand IQ Genius which he is RRR film connected with everyone because it's Ramayan wrapped under a modern cinema, like Rajamouli sir said watch and understand movie through visuals, it's connected to its mythological or Indian roots, also movie is symbolic it has far more that 100 references which is crazy, I accidentally ignored the movie thinking meh this is just another O.T.T. movie but when it was praised by the entire world, I watched the movie once again with a clear mind. I saw references of steam revolution like Ram fire Bheem water creating steam and steam revolution was during 19's and steam-powered engines back then so when Ram and Bheem ran together it powered the steam train that they were running together with. Also, the whole Ramayan reference, Sita praying in front of Rama and Sita idols, she giving him the locket like Sita in Ramayan gave her ring to Hanuman to give it to Ram, but they reversed it in the movie since Ram in movie is in prison and Sita is waiting for him whilst Hanuman/Bheem goes to save him. Sita feeding Hanuman during his return from Lanka to Ram and Hanumam promising that he will surely return with Shree ram and rescue you, just like that in reverse movie showing Sita feeding Bheem and him promising to keep Rama safe and rescue him with his life. Vahan which fought alongside god's in Hinduism like Shree Ganesh having mouse as his vahan, Nandi was Vahan of Shankar, and all the monkeys fighting in Ramayan also Jatayu in Ramayan trying to stop Ravana from kidnapping Sita mata, and so to give reference to this mad lad S. S. Rajamouli made Bheem use all the animals during invasion scene. As well as there is a reference of Andman Nicobar island cells which empire created for kaala pani where ram was kept and all the Bhartiya revolutionaries were kept there. The whole bridge scene where Bheem exchanged child to Ram and took Rams flag which symbolizes Bheem after understanding Ram's mission to gather weapons to empower the nation and its people, which ironically told the entire plot of the movie in a single scene. Also, there is one reference to Hanuman taking Lakshman and Ram to help Sugreev defeat Vali on his shoulders. In movie instead, Bheem takes Ram on shoulders and does push-ups but also breaks outs from cells by fighting the battle together like that. Jenny is a reference to Vibhishan, who was also on the enemy side, but after seeing good in Bheem's heart, she Joined Ram and Bheem, similar to that in Ramayan Vibhishan joined Ram. Another reference where Ram is bitten by a snake and almost dying and Bheem saving him with some ancient tribal cure, which is reference to Hanuman bringing a mountain of whole anjani buti for Lakshman. When Ram was whipping Bheem that song was a reference to a small story under Ramayan which most of the people have forgotten about, once Naradmuni was thinking whether Ram is bigger or his name, so he told Hanuman to greet everyone but Vishawamitra, and Hanuman did so accordingly. Vishawamitra after seeing this was furious and ordered Rama his disciple to punish Hanuman, Then Rama went and showered Hanuman with arrows but Hanuman was saying Rama's name and chanting his names mantra so Hanuman was ineffective with every single arrow that was shot at him, Rama even used Bramhaastra against Hanuman but it didn't work and thus the Rama's name was bigger, in this scene pavanputra as in son of the wind is carassed by wind and leaf like its child which is also a reference to the hindu mythology. (Since Bheem by name is a character from Mahabharat epic but Bheem in this movie is Hanuman, because both are Vayuputra or Pawanputra in Hindu mythology and Hanuman even helped Bheem in Bheem's story) Ram beats bheem under Scott's order, which is reference to Vishwamitra ordering Shree Ram. And even when Shree Ram didn't want to harm Hanuman/Bheem with whips and Bheem was unaffected by whips because he was singing, thus chanting mantra reference in this scene. Bheem breaking the rope is reference to Sita's sawaymwar where lord Rama broke the bow in the stead of Sita's father and all the assembly which was also a flex of power. Also just like real life Ram Alluri or Sitarama Raju gathered weapons and after his lovers death he roamed around with saffrom robes with quiver of arrows and bow in jungles killing britishers to gather their weapons and give it to empower Bhartiya common wealth and revolutionaries, and also in the movie Ram joins empire because his father told him to collect weapons to empower revolutionaries, is like Ram taking Sanyas because his father told him to and Ram repspecting his father's choice. One day when Ram Alluri was praying to the god, Britishers unethically murdered him. Bheem was maybe from gond tribe and he wore robes of momedians by pretending to them and taunted Britishers and momedians then lured them as well and killed them with his tribe but I don't know how he died and how or how much of info that I wrote about both is trustable but yeah one of the momedian community was helping britishers and they were anti nationals so Bheem fought against them and killed them but since I read nothing about these two revolutionaries, That's all I can understand from the movie, also Bheem and Rama Alluri who where revolutionaries in real life fought their separate battles in separate states, but I know little about them because my school never thought me about these two legends in northern part of the Bharat, this movie introduced these legends to me and I'm ever grateful for that.
