Baahubali and an American's Appreciation of S.S. Rajamouli

By popular demand, I will be going over Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion. These were groundbreaking Telugu films that had a cultural impact on India the way Star Wars did in America.
Director S.S. Rajamouli, fresh off his smash-hit RRR, is proving himself to be a director with a clear and creative vision. In this video, I also express my appreciation for his passionate style of filmmaking.
Baahubali stars Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Tamanna, Rana Daggubati, Ramya Krishnan, and Sathyaraj
Intro 0:00-2:30
Baahubali: The Beginning 2:31-7:58
Baahubali: The Conclusion 7:59-13:12

The thing I love about living in India is that I do not have to rely on only one industry for all my movie needs. When I want a slice of life, I go to Malayalam cinema. When I want something larger than life, Telugu cinema is the master in that. When I want my cheesy stuff, I will turn to bollywood/hindi stuff. Similarly Tamil cinema has its technical and story brilliance. Kannada cinema is the up and rising one. Turn to Bengali cinema when I want more arthouse or contemporary thoughtful stuff. It is honestly amazing. No matter how bad a year it is, each industry will produce about half a dozon bangers and that is more than enough to entertain you all through the year. Then the other smaller industries will keep giving you gems from time to time.

I've been wanting to watch these movies since watching RRR. Indian movies in general just tend to be a lot more relaxed in tone, filled with meta references to other movies and stars in real life. Compared to Hollywood movies, these films are always super refreshing and never take themselves too seriously, these are movies made for pure entertainment, not to pursue realism or build some expanded universe. In general, Tollywood (Tamil movies) tend to have insane action sequences and are even more over the top, and Bollywood leans more towards the drama side of things, but still very over the top when compared to western made films. I hope the success of RRR, and other foreign movies like Parasite will help open people's minds in the west to experiencing the different styles of story telling the rest of the world has to offer.

After watching the bahubali series, I was forward to more from the bahubali world. Maps like middle earth with places and stories from different eras. You should read Bahubali before the beginning: Rise of Sivagami. It explores more of this fantasy world and makes you want more. It has maps too. It tells you 300 years history of Mahishmati just like Targaryens history from ASOIAF. Creators should continue the world building so that we can have something like star wars, middle earth and ASOIAF.

Man I love Baahubali too. I'm glad you pointed out the wierd "unmasking" sequence with Avanthika. That disturbed me as well, but I just chalked it up to cultural differences. I actually like how the movies switch to past and present. In Kattappa's intro he had an exchange with the sword guy of something along the lines of "spoken words, just like spilled blood, cannot be taken back". Guess what both he and Sivagami's characters are about? So it goes full circle once we know why Kattappa killed Amarendra. It emphasizes the inevitability of the situation since it already happened, and we see what led up to it, increasing the impact once the scenes are shown again and we know the full context. The only thing I really don't like is how Bijjaladeva just… gets to keep his position at the end despite all the scheming he did. As if, Kattappa just kept their conversation in the climax a secret and is completely cool with a villainous schemer in the palace.

So the thing about Indian cinema is that it has many film industries and that's something which surprisingly saved Indian cinema despite Bollywood's downfall in recent years otherwise Indian cinema would as a whole have died by now but these small regional industries which before 2010s were very cheap in quality compared to Bollywood both story and production wise are now the ones providing the most diverse quality content.

  • @krishnan5765

There's some misinformation in this post. saying that before 2010 regional movie industries other than Bollywood were cheap interms of quality and production is an absolute FALSE & INCORRECT info. Regional movie industries like Telugu and Tamil co existed with Bollywood right from 1930s and always stood shoulder to shoulder with Bollywood interms of quality and production values. Though their reach across India was lesser than Bollywood, they still enjoyed vast exclusive regional markets for themselves, were cash rich and on par or even better than Bollywood in many departments of film making. The fact that Bollywood has umpteen number of movies that were remakes of Telugu and Tamil movies itself is an indication of the quality of their movies.

  • @One-pieceisbestanimeintheworld

    @One-pieceisbestanimeintheworld

    Жыл бұрын

@@krishnan5765 you didn't get my point, if you don't know back in the era of 2000s the most common of watching of movies was either theatre or TV and it was quite rare for a South Indian film to be projected on North side theatres so most of them never got theatrical release and went straight to TV channels and at that time the audience watching films didn't have nearly as much option of watching small underrated movies so it was only the mass commercial films that were really popular got to broadcasted on TV. So when speaking of commercial movies back in the days at South industries it included very cringey jokes, amateurish use of slo-mo's and very inappropriate presentation of women in their movies and more or less every commercial movie was based on the same formula. People who are actually from South might got to watch some quality movies in their theatres and TV but on the north side it wasn't as easily accessible so we mostly got to see movies which were popular and making collections and buzz rather than the ones that were good. Look good movies are always there in every decade and every industry but it's not common that it would be the highest grossing movie every time, sometimes a mediocre movie could be more profitable then a good story driven movie. So considering that in my eyes back then the only type of South movies people knew were of low quality and for very different audience who now just mostly exist on TV probably but it's only recently probably like after 2013 that the regional industries have started experimenting and getting expert in their work.

I still believe the main protagonist is Amarendra Bahubali (the senior). The Son Mahendra Bahubali aka Shivudu is the emerging protagonist who only achieves his peak when during the final battle in the second movie. The son is shown to be clearly an inferior n immature version of his father... And the movies mainly focused on his journey from a curious kid to realising his actual potential and starting to embark on that journey at the end of the 2 movies. So, where ever the son is involved, there is a tension as he is imperfect and he is constantly evolving in a positive progression towards realising his true potential... But hasnonly peaked at the very end... And in this ever changing uncertainty, the Father Amarendra Bahubali ("Amarendra" literally means "the immortal king") lives on as a grand legacy setting example for everyone h9w to lead one's life with values, ethics, morals inspite of all the moral, ideological conflicts and dilemmas by solely focusing on the duty, responsibility and righteousness through selflessness and not caring about personal gains. This character is set in stone as an ideal milestone both characterwise as well as physical strength and feats, and this character Amarendra is the permanent constant in the 2 movies who doesn't change but changes, influences the world around him and contributes for it's upliftment. Devasena his wife is one more constant a feminine counterpart to his character with unwavering integrity, values, strength, wits, boldness, unyielding straightforward attitude towards her beliefs and values, and last but not the least, her unwavering faith in her son who will exact her wishes by finding his way towards her and undoing the wrongs of his uncle, the evil self-centred, entitled king, Ballaladeva. Both these characters never changed and are the constants in the movie irrespective of the situations as they had strong belief in their values and stuck to their righteousness and put the well-being of the people before themselves. These 2 characters are the perfect implementation of neutral character progression as thise characters are so strong that they influence everyone they come across but are steadfast in their beliefs and always hold a selflessness in their attitude which they exemplify through their actions.

it's a shame that Baahubali came out before the golden age of youtube. it's a miracle that it didn't get noticed by the western world, and it really is a shame, bc i've been looking for analysis videos about the deeper symolism and easter eggs in it, but i literally couldn't find any bc youtube wasn't as big back then

Mahismati was a city mentioned in MahaBharata. There is a statue in India of Bahubali who is a historical figure. In Mahabharata, the people are of a superior stock due to them being from ages that predated KaliYuga. Also, many warriors were half human eg Half-Human and Half-Deva, Half-Human and Half-Naga, Half-Human and Half-Gandharva, Half-Human and Half-Asura, Half-Human and Half-Rakshasa, and Those who were born from a father who was human and a mother who was an Apsara.

Honestly, there's one more SS rajamouli film i would recommend Although, after seeing bahubali and RRR, this one will seem extremely unrefined in the making and visual effects part, but it is a fantasy and even has a Bollywood hindi remake cause the story was new and frankly, amazing. It's called magadheera and if you can get over the over the topness of the movie, it's a great watch, considering the budget This was the film that introduced me to rajamouli and it is a reincarnation fantasy

Amazing video. Thanks for you're insight & incredible understanding u did. Many Characters developed better in RRR than baahubali though i disagree. I felt the characters like Amarendra Baahubali, Devasena, Sivagami, Kattappa, ballaladeva & bijaladeva were very well developed in baahubali. In RRR only Komaram Bheem & Alluri Sitarama Raju were well developed & were supported well by Jenny. The Alison Doody character was the most annoying. Ray Stevenson though was the typical one dimensional villain who's evil & understandable since the film revolved more around the freedom fighters friendship than than the others.

That’s a fair point about RRR’s villains. Bhallaladeva was a better villain than Governor Scott

@@M.C.ThomasReviews lol that's not a fair comparison frankly. The villains in RRR were definitely gonna be overshadowed as the movie was all about the journey of the main leads in their respective goals. Baahubali however had balalladeva power hungry for the throne & adulation of the people of mahishmathi & he despised Amarendra Baahubali.

Bhallaladeva was definitely a more personal antagonist which is why he made more of an impact on me, but Governor Scott certainly served his purpose as well. Both well-done villains, just very different.

@@M.C.ThomasReviews exactly. Though compare this to many Indian films the white actors surprisingly were good as most Indians films white actors are not really good in acting & I was surprised seeing Alison Doody from James bond a view to a kill & Indiana Jones the last crusade act in this movie & boy was she annoying, she was the character I hated the most. Ray Stevenson looks different from the witcher role. Both Jr NTR & Ram Charan did all of their stunts by themselves, except for 2-3 shots, body doubles were used which was confirmed by the director. The Naatu Naatu song is very easy by both the actors standards who are extraordinary dancers *(who have done far more complicated choreo & faster dances than Naatu Naatu),* except Rajamouli took a lot of time 12 days continuous, (12 hrs on set, 2 hrs again at hotel) & made them dance rigorously for 17 takes for entire song continuously only to finalize & okay the 2nd shot🤣 which was done I believe within 1-2 days. It was very special seeing 2 massive stars on the same frame whom we know are awesome dancers, it was very rare. Also the movie was shot for 320 days entirely by SS Rajamouli without any 2nd or 3rd unit & they shot by schedule episode by episode format.

All telugu movie heros have superhero power so I did get much though to superhuman strength of bahubali or actions scenes in RRR, you should watch balayya movies to understand what I am saying,if I remember correctly he was trying to make climb before mask and mask and her gave him more motivation and her in white he sees when climbing was more of illusion, her job is just to get him on top and main focus is on him discovering who he is so it make sense she only got that much screen time

Bollywood thinks because it produces more number of movies that it rules the Indian film industry. But they dont understand that Quantity does NOT matter in front of Quality. South Indian Film Industry (Telugu, Tamil, Kannada & Malayalam) focus MORE on "Quality" rather than "FILTH" like the Bollywood a.k.a Hindi film Industry. I agree there are some Hindi films that are genuine but off late Bollywood thinks that they OWN the entire Indian Film industry. They have a LOT of EGO and PRIDE Issues which they need to let go otherwise they will surely GO!!!

Bahubali deserved a proper trilogy. Mahendra shouldve lost at the end of second movie and retreated to some safe place and lay low for some time and gathering forces using Kattappa's old acquaintances or friends and leadong to a massive and bloody battle at the end of the 3rd film. But Bahubali was way ahead of its time in case of budget and nobody is willing to risk too much money making a trilogy.
