Why Romain Grosjean's big IndyCar move went so badly wrong

Спорт

The IndyCar driver market is at it again! After two instances of two separate teams suing Alex Palou in the last year, ex-F1 driver Romain Grosjean is the latest to explore his options which could lead to legal action.
Grosjean has initiated arbitration proceedings - a process that helps two parties resolve differences out of court - to ‘protect his rights’ following his exit from the Andretti Autosport team
In a statement, Grosjean said he “had expected to continue racing with the fine people of Andretti Autosport in the coming years”.
He said he was “proud” of the successes he and the team shared, but was “disappointed” that his intention to continue with the team is not being fulfilled.
Grosjean’s representation - which he mentions in the statement - is the same used by Chip Ganassi Racing when it settled out of court with Palou last year.

Grosjean has always seemed a little "disconnected". He's fast when he wants to be and there's little pressure, but once pressure start he mentally collapses and does error after error. Who can remember his 2012 season when he took out half the grid at Spa?

His results were not too bad, without the bad luck at the start of the season when he lost almost 60pts, he would be equal to Herta and Kirkwood. To be fair to Grosjean, some of this is on the team, but he's also responsible minus those incidents where he was crashed into which are far less than him crashing into other cars and walls. It got so bad with Grosjean this season that we literally started to bet how many laps before he DNF'd each race. That kind of predictability isn't good and coming from F1, you know his long history. That letter he penned though, was absolutely priceless. Might as well have just taped a giant middle finger down the middle of it, and saved us all the fake pleasantries for PR purposes only.

The thing is, nowadays, even a really dominant driver in F1 maybe wouldn't translate to an all around driver in other categories. Even driving a Formula car like the Indycar, it's almost more similar some Stock Cars compared to Indycars than Indycars compared to the F1, specially for the new generation of F1 drivers. Maybe just Verstappen can drive "everything" on the asphalt, and Mick Schumacher seems to have a good Rally potential skills, but didn't translate his potential skills, being a slowburner shy person: he simple didn't had the enough time in F1, he chooses the worst environment to do his first steps there. But, well... I don't see, specially from the late 00s F1 drivers being all arounds drivers, they're "mastered" F1 and F1 it's just different, also, Grosjean wasn't that good F1 driver, honestly. So, nowadays FOR ME, again, F1 drivers, even the best ones probably can't dominate straight away in Indycar or maybe never in so many cases. And medium grade drivers like Erickson or even Sato can arrive from a category of mixed circuits, and prove to be really good on ovals, contradicting expectations. F1 is a mean tech money based constructors category, when drivers like Erickson got a long run than Nasr being clearly better, having drivers like Grosjean, Fisichella, Stroll, Latifi, Giovinazzi for so many seasons or being blinded by just one run like happened with De Vries or even Albon driving against Latifi and a raw rookie like Sargeant with a car being so much better than the individual results.

The guys at Ziggo (Dutch F1 TV rights holder until 2022) offered some Grosjean insights recently in one of their shows. Apparently, he had a reputation for being somewhat of a selfish dickhead in F1 and not too pleasant as a person to interview. But a big part of that they reckoned also has to do with the way F1 works, where your teammate is your biggest competitor, and being selfish is almost a requirement. It's what made them doubt Grosjean's possible adventure into endurance racing somewhat because that is a sport that really requires you to play the team game with your fellow driver.

  • @RAZGR1Z

I don't think Andretti has bad management but they do screw up on strategy sometimes. I'd say that goes for all the teams in IndyCar though. The closest Ferrari analogue in IndyCar would be Team Penske because they've had a very long history in Motorsport and with single seaters in America. Team Penske doesn't really have clown show moments that Ferrari historically has though.

Ultimately whilst Grosjean is capable of being fast when everything's right his willful ignorance over the consequences of his actions and inability to accept his own shortcomings have been plain for years to seemingly everyone but him. Attempting a spin-turn in the middle of the track on lap 1 at Spain was the absolute signal of a driver who did not think before acting. Mix in that he still insists he did nothing wrong in Spa 2012 (a similar move later causing his nearly life-ending fireball crash) and is now infamous for blaming and trash-talking his car in two disciplines and the picture it paints is of a man who, whilst charismatic, has an ego too fragile to accept or learn from his shortcomings.
