F1 vs Indycar: Grosjean, O'Ward, Ilott, Ericsson, Herta!

Спорт

F1 and Indycar are 2 of the premier motor sporting categories around the globe, but what makes them different? This was my first ever time attending an Indycar event and at the same time my first time photographing one. As an F1 photographer, throughout my time spent over the weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I noticed a number of significant differences between the two and so have a lot of the drivers. I spoke to Indycar drivers Romain Grosjean (Andretti Autosport), Pato O'Ward (McLaren Indycar), Callum Ilott (Juncos Hollinger Racing), Marcus Ericsson (Chip Ganassi Racing), and Colton Herta (Andretti Autosport). Press play now to watch F1 vs Indycar: Grosjean, O'ward, Ilott, Ericsson, Herta!

There's a reason F1 is the highest honor in motorsports. There's only 20 seats in F1 and to be one of those drivers is the highest honor and a testament to your ability as a driver. Indycar imo now I say imo looks like amateur hour on your local weekend circuits, these guys can't go a lap without wrecking each other or sliding into barricades or walls. F1 drivers are so tuned into their craft they can tell when the tires are losing grip before it happens, these guys just go out and get in a car and go similar to nascar it's just very primitive and simplistic for my taste. Now you say F1 is a constructors competition yes it is that too which is another testament to the sport these guys are constantly bringing upgrades and actually constructing bits from ground up it's impressive to witness and see along with the great drivers champ we also get to see who can bring proper upgrades to make gains and make their machine the fastest most agile thing on grid. If anything this year and with the new era of cars and regs we've got Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes and now even Alpine proving to be very strong then depending on the circuit throw Haas and the fight with McLaren it's captivating and when your watching you truly feel the sense of wow I really am watching the pinnacle of motorsports. I'm not trying to knock NASCAR or Indy for that matter hey whatever your into as long as it keeps you interested in motorsports great but to have any negative feedback on F1 is just ludicrous. I even on weekends where there isnt an F1 race going on tune in to Indycar, but to say any of those drivers could make it in F1 is absurd. Herta who may have the best shot even he needs ALOT of grooming whether it be in the simulator or just ALOT of track test days accompanied by simulator time then maybe yeah he could make it in Williams

@@codyzempel5506 that's where I think alot of people would disagree with you. Indycar is 100% about the driver and his skills. I love F1 as well but to act like indycar drivers are amateurs just because they're not f1 drivers is pretty ignorant. The fact that indycar is so much more competitive and a level playing field should tell you how good these drivers have to be to get the #1 spot. Are rally drivers amateurs too because they don't drive f1 cars? You make it seem like the only good drivers compete in f1. Where's you have pay drivers like Lance stroll and latifi and the like throughout the years buying their spots on teams. How much sponsor money a driver brings in doesn't have nearly as big a factor in indycar as it does in f1. Of course it's because indycar doesn't bring in the big money like f1 but it does bring in the bigger talent pool and more competition which means better drivers. F1 definitely has the most advanced and fastest cars but it doesn't have the best drivers. It's limited by the money making schemes and sponsorship money. That's why you won't see the best drivers in the world in a f1 race.

My main thing is I wish the “allure” of F1 would die out. Because realistically most drivers aren’t going to F1 and if they do, there’s even less of a chance they’ll get podiums, less of a chance to win races, and least of all to win a championship. Generations of drivers wasted chasing a ghost. I think more should go to Indy or other series as it gives a realistic shot to its drivers to win.

  • @captainjosue

@@sondosoft4603 Definitely agree with you. Theres more to life than F1 and just because you didn't make it in F1 doesn't mean you're a loser or that there aren't any other opportunities in motor racing. Indycar I hope can be that alternative path other than F1 because the road to F1 is not as people think it should be. Look at Oscar Piastri. Poor bloke was F2 champ and has F1 ride. You got Zhou who brought a lot of $$$ to Alfa and Gio lost his seat which pissed off a lot of people. Makes you question what the hell are the driver academies good for if their drivers can't get a seat in F1. Calum saw the light and realized that opportunities are hard to come by and took a seat and got a deal in Indycar and he's doing very well.

Kym, thanks for taking an interest in Indycar. We are starting to see some former F1 drivers come over to teams in the series. Many decades ago when USAC ran Indy racing, there was a connection between the two as I recall. But times have changed.

I cannot believe that you were at the Indy GP and didn't see you. I'm part of the group of photographers in the front row on the left side in the video clip on the photo meeting. I've shot at Indy for 33 years now. You are right that it's a very different environment for photographers. One comment about your comment about the lack of security preventing the general public from accessing restricted areas. While in places there may not visible security, I can assure you that IMS has a large network of security cameras that are actively monitored in the security center inside the Pagoda. If you're trackside without a "photo vest" (tabard) you will stick out. I'm glad you gave Indy a try. Too bad it conflicts with Monaco, I think you'd love to work the 500.

You got to see an exceptionally bonkers race. Most Indycar races don't feature that much drama but I think in terms of sheer on-track action the average Indycar race beats the average F1 race. That's not intended as a knock on F1 either, it's just the way it is. We as F1 fans know that some races over the course of the year are going to be processions and enjoy the series anyway. I actually don't think comparing F1 to Indycar is really appropriate anyway. Indycar is more like Formula 2: a bunch of people in largely similar machinery just trying to beat each other.

It's interesting to hear about the differences between the two. You hear F1 drivers, notably those that don't race for the top 3s, talk about pushing for equal specs which I mean is fair. Yes, you want innovation, but as Grosjean said, how frustrating is it that you are doing your absolute best, and everyone knows your car can't physically beat another car further up in the ranks. We know this because of drivers who have left the more winning teams and gone to race for others or vice versa where 'suddenly' X driver is winning races and on more podiums.

The best indication of how competitive Indycar is is the driver's championship. It's only been decided after the final race of the season for *14 years* in a row. And that's not because they have NASCAR-style playoffs either. The points system is a lot like F1s but in Indycar it's just very difficult for one driver to run away with things.

For everyone not from USA; everything described in this video ( no restrictions) is the way we like it and want it here in USA for both Nascar and Indy. At start of every Nascar race, wives, children, families stand next to drivers and their cars just before the "strap in" and race.!! (watch on YT.) Goes back to the "no one is special or privileged or "above" someone else here" mantra. Nascar is especially good at fans watching out for, and keeping others in line; families from the area. At 09:00 in video; no elitists here; one Nascar driver drove thru a fast food drive thru on way home from race ! Best part; ANY DRIVER CAN WIN !!! Last week 38 year old from new team won (Kurt Busch) in Nascar.

Thanks for the exposure of IndyCar for your followers! The interviews did a great job of explaining the differences between F1 and IndyCar. F1 has 20 awesome drivers that can rarely win, unless they are on a top team. IndyCar drivers all have the same car. increasing the odds of any great driver winning. I expect to see more F1 drivers join IndyCar after their term in F1. They still want to win!

For the past few years I've been hoping and praying that Daniel Ricciardo will give Indycar a shot once his time in F1 is done. I think his driving style would be perfect for the series and his personality would instantly make him one of the most popular drivers on the Indycar paddock. Indycar seems like a place Ricciardo would have a lot of fun and the fans could have a lot of fun enjoying him as well.

You saw an AMAZING race. I can't promise they'll be all that good, but, as the drivers say in this video, Indcyar is more competitive than F1. We F1 fans love it when the championship comes down the final race. That's happened in IndyCar for the previous *14 years* in a row. In IndyCar it's very difficult for a driver to run away with things. The next IndyCar is the Indianapolis 500 on the oval and I know that F1 fans don't seem to "get" the 500. "They're just driving around in circles. What's the big deal?" It's a different kind of racing though which combines courage to go 230mph lap after lap, with a bit of endurance racing thrown in, and a whole lot of pit strategies going on. Getting those cars to go that fast for that long means some potentially winning drivers drop out with equipment failures because "that's just racing". Another thing for F1 fans watching to 500 to keep in mind is that there are more pit strategies being used at a given times because safety cars (or "pace cars" we call them) are more common. You might see a frontrunner get his strategy wrong and get moved back. A mid-pack car can, because of good strategy calls, find itself up front. But it's a 500 mile races so they might find themselves flip flopped again later because of strategy. Long oval IndyCar races seem to kind of ebb and flow as they go on. That's not to say they're boring because during the ebbs is when a lot of the teams decide their pit strategy and how they're going to get close to the front at the end. If everyone gets their strategy calls right the final 20 laps or so can be nuts while numerous drivers all try to desperately win one of the biggest auto races on the planet.

I swear Swedes adapt really well in the US. Marcus doesn’t have an accent anymore! Haha I used to live with 3 Swedes that I found on Craigslist for roommates and two of them took me to Sweden. Said if I can point it out on an unmarked map, I can stay with them for 6 weeks. I knew Finland, and I totally guessed and luckily I picked the correct one and not Norway. It was cheaper to fly to Sweden from LA than flying to Hawaii by $200. So instead of going home I went with them 😂

It's funny you mention Ericsson's accent because I've noticed that other Swedes don't have an accent to my American ears either. I worked with a Swedish immigrant to the US and if I didn't know English was his second language I never, ever would have guessed. Long time Detroit Red Wing Nicklas Lidstrom also sounded like a native English speaker to me too. The sounds used in some Swedish accents and some versions of the American English accent must be very similar or something.
