Why Pochettino's Chelsea STILL Isn't Working

Спорт

Another defeat, this time at the hands of Everton, has increased the pressure on Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino. Has he been unlucky with results, or is his plan for the team simply unworkable? FourFourTwo's Adam Clery examines English football's biggest conundrum.

    If we follow this great analysis video, it’s really clear that 1) we don’t have a clear plan of attack 2) the few chances we do create, because even hapless players know how to craft a few, aren’t very good. On a personal note, I’d say the attitude is a huge issue, we look lost after the first 20 minutes of every game if we don’t score or concede. I’d 100% push for 2-3 experienced premier level players who can finish off chances (Toney), play a few progressive passes, and know how to fight for a win (or at least a fucking tie) even when we’ve had a bad day in the office.

    If you overpay for crap at a car boot sale, it doesnt mean its worth what you paid for it. Its probably part system but we have overpaid for every single player. Jackson had 2 good months. Mudryk played 30 career games. Enzo had 6 months experience in Europe and cost 5x less the previous summer. I do feel for Jackson. He doesn't have a more senior pro to learn from/receive guidance. Imagine him learning from a prime Drogba? We have Sterling, Silva, Chilwell and James (if you can call the latter two senior, though neither of them can stay fit). Disasi is average. For me, its a mix we dont have the quality and the system/manager. I don't want Poch gone. Though some of his decision making and refusal to change things is annoying me.

    Best video I've seen on the current state of Chelsea!!!! Die hard. Chelsea fan here and I'm so sick of listening to my regular KZreadrs because they just think Chelsea is an absolute shambles and don't take the time to really analyze their game. I know it's a project and it is making me frustrated too, but I'm so sick of hearing that every single player out there is not worthy to be a Chelsea player. They just need to figure out how to finish and make better decisions in that final third and then we're up there. We're up there again competing for top four and cups and trophies.

    This is probably the best analysis of Chelsea’s struggles. Having watched every game this season I’d also add that we’re suffering from not having a few players on the pitch who can look around and say “we’re down a goal but let’s fucking win this”. Again, that’s definitely an issue that stems from most of our starting XI being so young. (I’d also add that having Silva as the oldest player in the league definitely drives up the average.) The oldest player in our game against Everton was 26. I’d love to see Ivan Toney and Calvin Philips brought in over the winter. Toney is a proven goal scorer who’d take our chances and put pressure on Jackson to learn. Phillips would add experience AND avoid defensive mistakes. Then we’dsee Enzo flourish a bit more.

    I kept my eyes on Enzo throughout the game because we all knew he isn't a 10 but for some reason poch decided to play him a 10 again and he wasn't able to create. But that wasn't his fault. He literally had no one making those runs for his through balls and lobs. There were countless occasions when he tried to look for a lob but then went backwards because no one was making the run for his lob. This team lacks anticipation in the final third

    See it’s interesting that enzo is the player that gets highlighted for the creative issues. He’s simply not a 10. He should be sitting next to Caicedo and dictating. In fact he has been for a lot of the season (which is why he has some of the best progressive passing and throughball stats itl). For some reason poch decided to put enzo back into the 10 against Everton. It just doesn’t work. There’s a whole lot more that’s wrong with Chelsea right now but that feels indicative. The whole thing is confusing. It feels like poch just… isn’t giving the team any instructions? We don’t look like a team that’s struggling but with a clear identity, we just look like we’re lost. Personally I think the squad isn’t the problem. They’re very talented players. They should be trusted and backed… but I’m not so sure about poch right now. At some point we do need to bring in a manager and stick with them but it does feel like poch might not be the one

Poch had a set of tactics that worked fantastically in pre season and in the first few games of the season but after the injury list piled up he threw them out and is resorting to transitional football which simply doesnt suit the team. So no, Enzo isnt failing the team as an 8, poch is failing the team by not playing to its strenghts

It actually hasn’t stopped you from winning a load of trophies along the way as well. But United are the total opposite. The sentimental fools that run this damn club get dreamy eyed and start thinking of legacies from a bygone Fergie era after wining the energy drink cup. We give stupidly long contracts to players that wouldn’t be anywhere near this club when we were actually giants.

    The problem is that you can’t play enzo deeper with a struggling caicedo. Enzo is a complete passenger defensively and with caicedo struggling as well, we are so open. You either drop Caicedo when Nkunku is fit so that Gallagher is the nominal DM for his work-rate alongside enzo as a fabregas-type or we pin our hopes on Lavia when he is fit. Neither option fills me with confidence.

Otherwise Chelsea will struggle with Enzo as the creative player, he’s just not that kind of player.

  • @JustMeSach

    @JustMeSach

    It's much more than that. Nkunku is also a good passer of the ball and can press, which immensely helps the midfield. Right now, there's nobody in the team who can do that (Carney might but he's injured and young). As an alternative, we have to play a 3 man midfield. Gallagher can press but not create, whereas Enzo can create but he doesn't get the ball much as a #10 and isn't the best presser (which Poch needs), so neither of those options are good. Combine that with low chemistry and lots of losses due to poor finishing, and you can see why the performances are just getting worse over time.

    I must say that I enjoy your analysis a lot. You are a Football Diagnostics. You have clearly dissected the problem of CFC from a tactical and technical point of view. From the metrics which you based your analysis on, it clearly shows that the project is well ahead of schedule. MP is just weeks away from getting it right in terms of "key passes in the final third". It is the reason CFC are not scoring goals that could see them win games. Contrary to wide spread beliefs that Chelsea's season is over, I do not believe so. I see this team turning things around very soon and finish in European places. The owners should not make the mistake of sacking MP because that will set the project backwards. Rather, they should take a queue from what Arsenal board did with Arteta during his first two seasons at the Club. Today Arsenal are now title contenders. This Chelsea team will be scary to opponents next season by the time they become a finished article. MP is indeed cooking one of the best teams in Europe in the making. I encourage all Chelsea fans to be patient and support the team. By the way, I hope Todd Bohly and Egbali are watching your channel. You deserve a spot in the technical department at CFC. Thanks for your wonderful analysis.❤

    A missing stat is how quick Chelsea are getting into the final third of the pitch!!! Usually they take ages to get there and when they do, the defending team is already in a comfortable shape which makes it harder to create chances. When Enzo plays in the pivot, Chelsea move the ball a lot quicker. He should not be playing in the 10 position.

    Even experienced players will struggle playing with inadequate instructions or an inconsistent/ ill fitting system … their experience will only help a little. This team doesn’t have to get more experienced players if poch simply stuck to a system that suits our players and made sure that his instructions and training sessions are detailed enough for the youth to not second guess themselves or do unplanned rogue actions….

  • @Jfieldsend94
    @Jfieldsend945 ай бұрын

    I think the problem with the youth approach is that if it doesn’t work straight away, which it isn’t, then you can end up mentally ruining these players and therefore basically sabotaging their development. If we had a solid, experienced striker who was good for 15/20 goals a season, then the pressure to score is off of the likes of Jackson or Mudryk. Individually, if all these players were introduced into a settled team, their own shortcomings would be easier to ignore, they’d be on the winning side more and they’d get better and settle in quicker.

    Really it's the Sporting directors lack of balance when recruiting. Chelsea over the years have been successful because of buying players with proven experience. This system of only buying younger players with potential is just going to take time and patience. A few more experienced players will make a difference though with some peripheral players sold on.

    Agree with you for the most part. Slightly dowager on Cole Palmer ‘having to’ cut inside. He does but the pitch map is misleading because once Sterling came on, he moved into the 10 position. Hence the amount of touches in the middle. Maybe Nkhukhu coming back might help with the incisive passes in the middle. Probably too much pressure on him but sounds like that’s what Chelsea need. A creative playmaker who can break the lines with a pass. Of course Jackson needs to put them away but that’s another story

Neither will arsenal and Liverpool won't win their last 3 matches. To defeat low block teams, u need clinical midfielders. When the attack draws the opponents in their own box, u need midfielders that can hit that shots goal ward and score. Everton won us with goals coming from their midfield. Mctominay is man UTD highest goalscorer in the EPL and has won them more than 12 points this season alone. Rice have won 2 games for arsenal. So quit this bullshit about attackers not scoring.

    U make a good point towards the end… young players often need time and nurture! However I don’t know who is more impatient, the Chelsea board or Chelsea fans. But if the owners were to say to fans: “ we are committed to a long term project to build the best team in the world, give us 3-5 years and you will see some results” - that’s all fine and dandy but as seen with potter ball both the fans and the owners actually want overnight results in a postecoglou esque transformation. If you go back to Mourinho era, Ranieri already had built a pretty good team that could challenge anyone in the league at home especially, with a mix of younger and older players but lacking the star quality to beat arsenal/Man U in the table. Nowadays the league is much more competitive (the lower ranked teams are more of challenge) so patience is the key here! Sad thing no one in football has any

    With all the context of how “young” this squad is, the alarming thing about the current system is players in attacking positions intruding into each others areas. In a team needing to first establish its core principles I think it’s an over complication to deliver such fluid instructions & ultimately opponents needn’t worry of man tracking but instead sit in & remain compact, which is exactly how our attack has been nullified on numerous occasions. I think the solution right now is to simplify the system by implementing stricter zonal play. Familiarise each player with their own area & allow it to served as the foundation to any future ‘fluidity’ within the system.

    That’s what I’ve been saying since the start of the season, that midfield 3 doesn’t work, Enzo, Gallagher and Caicedo are all too conservative, that’s why it only works against teams that leave space in behind but against a low block we need a creative number 10 and 2 classic wingers

    Interesting video. But most of it blames the midfield for poor chance creation when I feel its more a lack of a settled pattern of team attack. The midfield can and does get the ball to the attack very frequently but the attackers are poor at linking up not only amongst themselves but also in bringing the rest of the team into the attacking phase of the game to amplify danger and confuse the defending team. For me, the midfield guys need to take the responsibility and shoot more often and look for each other more often in attack as passing the ball to the headless attackers too often does not yield desired results. Yes the likes of Enzo and Conor can and should produce more in attack but it does not help that wingers/attackers rarely look to bring them into the attacking equation by fluffing chances or not finding a team mate when they are better placed to score

    Enzo isn't a 10. And he's a better box-to-box than Gallagher. They need to drop Gallagher, move Enzo into the midfield and EITHER find a true number 8 OR employ Stering as a False 9. Fernandes is being wasted by the lack of balance in midfield. It isn't 1995, you can't play Paul Ince and Roy Keane both bombing forward and back together in the midfield. The game has evolved. Add to that, Mudryk doesn't look up to it. Palmer is too young to be expected to carry the creative burden. And they just have nothing through the middle.

    Chelsea need an experienced striker who knows where to find the space in the box where there doesn't seem to be any and the wide players to pick their heads up before playing the pass into the box instead of just passing into an area and hoping someone is there. We saw it a lot with Mudryk against Everton, Mudryk created more chances than any other player on the pitch, consistantly put it into a dangerous area where the space was in the box where no one had made the right movements and Everton defended it easily. Jackson needs to analyze highlights of some of the top strikers and study how they've been finding space in the box when we are heading for the byline to cut the ball back and he'd easily bag 15-20 goals a season with simple chances where he just needs to hit the target and he scores

    Enzo playing high with his back to goal receiving second balls is there in an effort too increase the frequency in which his passes are into an area of danger but when most of the time there’s only one more player more advanced than him it’s a bit stupid isn’t it. Makes more sense to let him have 111 touches deeper instead of Gallagher who created 2 chances that game which were 30 yard forced long shots. 2 players have scored 15 league goals in that team one hasn’t even seen the pitch the other has been declining since 2020. Even the experienced players are very inconsistent with either fitness or just application or work rate.

    Most touches but no key passes -> Pochettino is so coward that only moves the ball at side line. Sideline attack can be good ,but he doesn't even put players into the box. Also, no promised attacking play(isolation, 1 2 pass, penetration), no one at box and compelling him to cover more spaces are why Enzo cannot put good forward passes and he was good when he passed to opposite side and playmaked at the central spaces under Potter. That means Pochettino still doesn't know players (he said Enzo came to Europe only 3months which means Pochettino even didn't monitor last season how Potter used Enzo well) Plus, Pochettino do not use full-backs well enough. He always use 3 Centerbacks and rarely demand overlapping or underlapping for full backs. Properly put FB into the box and overlapp is important, but use them as old-dated way.

    Incisive analysis there! It's the final third, the through ball...Sterling should've put Broja through against Utd with 10 mins to play but took a couple of extra touches and was brought down eventually. Broja often makes great runs but isn't fed. Mudryk's speed isn't exploited enough. He too is often found knocking it about in triangles...lots of possession with no end result! Spurs don't mess around...they put the ball through to running, often overlapping attackers without any hesitation. They were brilliant against Newcastle...balls were flying into the box from all over the place. I hope Poch sorts it out soon!

    Based on this analysis : Swap enzo with cole, let cole be the BBM, as enzo will play as 2nd ST. Higher role and/or pos discipline needs to be implemented. Use mudryk as Inverted winger, supported by marc (DONT LET THIS GUY PUSH INSIDE, LET HIM HUG SIDELINE UNTIL MIDFIELD AREA) or better choice, colwill, and covered by caicedo/gallagher as the roaming playmaker, considering their stamina. On right flank, let sterling do his thing, hold anybody filling RB pos in the back tandem with 2 CB to keep mid-high press line. Try to play direct pass (short/long). Especially in opposition box, try to not hold the ball for extended time. Back 3 (1 as libero behind 2 others) BAIT ONLY NECESSARY AND TRY TO BE LESS THAN 5 secs. Sanchez, stop trying to be sweeper, try to play direct pass to midfield area,

    I feel like the same thing would have happened at Tottenham under Pochettino if they didn’t have a harry kane or son. The individual class or a harry Kane can easily offset the tactical issues in the final half because he himself is able to create the chances for himself. So as long as the balls gets in the opponents back third there will be danger but Chelsea doesn’t have a striker like Kane. The strikers at Chelsea need the midfielders to create really good chances for them to score. Guardiola and Man City do that really good in my opinion. Kevin de bruyne exceeds in that regard. I hope nkunku ist gonna help here because he’s skilled enough to create those chances himself. Also I genuinely hope they trust their young players and keep them on regardless of the results. The payoff could be massive for Chelsea

    Possession only matters when you have a cushion, a two goal lead. Total amount of passes completed is a pointless stat. Means nothing. Over passing can be a bad thing. What you do in both boxes is what matters. And simply put, they are poor in both boxes. With Reece James and Ben Chilwell both always injured, every season, their choices at fullback are poor. Cucurella and Gusto are not good enough. Playing CB's at full back might help out defensively, but it limits you going forward. And even if they put good crosses in the box, who is going to be on the end of it? Nobody. Because Jackson is not a proper striker and Broja is average and not a target man.

Put Mudryk in left wing but not cutting in all the time, Gallagher as early days Milner down right, only use Cucurela against proven weaker teams, Enzo and Caicedo in midfield workhorses, establish a back four, AND KEEP THE TACTICS SIMPLE.

    The really fascinating thing (depressing for a Chelsea fan) about this is you didn't need to title it "Pochettino's Chelsea". I'm not a stats guy but I'm willing the bet if you look back at us over the last five years those same metrics will tell you an interesting story especially if you combine them with chances created. This has been the bane of our existence under Sarri, Lampard, Tuchel, Potter & now Pochettino, as control in the first two thirds of the pitch has gotten better, the chance creation rate has gotten worse to such a point where in the first few months of Potter's reign we'd regularly have less than 10 efforts on goal a game with 65-70% possession. It's on an upward curve now, painfully slow but steady progress is visible. But what's fascinating about this is the amount of squad turnover during that time not making the slightest bit of difference. The squad's gone through three major revolutions since 2018 & not a single player from that 2018-19 PL squad is still at the club, not one! This problem has even overseen a change in ownership with completely different ideals via recruitment strategy too each other. It's freaky as hell.
