Pochettino was a transitional manager. He was hired for his man management ability. He brought the best out the young players and motivated them to be themselves. He didn't coach the players. Which is why we can't break down low block teams. Now the players have matured under him and now need a coach who teach them build up play.

At least when they used to sack managers it was because they had a manager with a proven track-record ready to come in with the expectation that they'd win a trophy or they'd be sacked too. I heard a stat that I think under Abramovich the club nea h ver went more than two years without a trophy. They used to go after any manager who had recent success. i remember the media saying that the Champions League final between Mourinho's Porto and Deschump's Monaco was the audition for the Chelsea job and whoever won it would get that job. Abramovich was ruthless when he sacked managers, Clearlake seem clueless rather than ruthless. Chelsea fans probably knew the writing was on the wall when the recruitment for the first summer transfer window was handled by a venture capital guy with no experience of any working in football at any level and overpaying for players like Cucerella I know it's been said by a lot of people, but they really should just have bough Brighton. It's clearly the model they want where "success" is how much they can make on players rather than winning any trophies. They only waht to win those to increase their "brand awareness". I just find it crazy now that the reason to have academy players come through is to sell them so they can afford to buy young players from elsewhere who don't seem to be a massive upgrade on the academy players they sold

​@@mauddib1761Don't know why chelsea fans are so clueless. New ownership wants to be SUSTAINABLE. How hard it's to understand that. Roman way wasnt. Chelsea spend awful lot in past decade but mostly turned to competing for cup competition only and no way near title challenge. They have the smallest revenue in big 6 and there wasn't a proper direction for long term. Everyone keeps saying Brighton but they don't have enough revenue to compete for anything. We are buying some talented young players which they couldn't have done with Brighton. Gallagher, Chalobah are limited. Their replacement are better technical wise better suited for possession football. Also they are pure profits while newer players are amortized.

All those stats tells us Chelsea made 6th off individual brilliance rather than a consistent play style

I swear, people simply try to outdo one another on who can have the gloomiest take in three sentences or less. What I love about Adam's vids is that he doesn't put out safe, neutral, analysis, and he doesn't hide behind stats. I love that he puts his neck on the line, and I love that he doesnt cave to whatever the trendy opinion is. He's spoken at length this season about Chelseas underperformance and what the causes are. I appreciate many elements about Pochettino as a person, but having seen every Adam video on Chelsea this season, not only am I not that surprised, but I genuinely think it's the best move all around. Even though I would agree that it's not really 'fair'.

The real issue with these stats used is that they are based on the entire season. They tell nothing about how the team developed over the course of the season. Chelseas season really was a tale of two halves. So I'm certain quite a few of these stats are bogged down by the issues of low cohesion and inexperience being more impactful in the 1st half of the season. These stats would be very different if you took them again from just the 2nd half of the season (4th in the form table) or since Chalobah returned (3rd in the form table) or since the bounceback after that Arsenal loss (2nd in the form table). I just believe its very flawed to judge a team on the entire season without taking the season in chunks and seeing how they developed. They gave Poch mainly player for high intensity penetrative play. Of course the coach then is going to play in a way that he has the tools for.

Please stop smoking Crack. It's called a league for a reason with 38 weekday games. The season doesn't start in March or April, it starts in August. Not when other teams are racking up points from August to February then u start building momentum from March. That has been the issue with Chelsea for a while now and more reason I supported the sacking of Pochetino. However, I feel the Board are clueless by going for B-Rated coaches from Championship clubs like Ipswich and Brighton. Chelsea is supposed to be an elite team contesting trophies at the highest level but this Burger King and Milkshake owners are turning us to Brendtford ( No disrespect). We should be going for world class coaches, buying a bit of experienced players and mixing them up with the youngins. It's so unfortunate, our philosophy of never going a season trophy less, has been thrown into the wind 😡.

Its also not smoking crack to acknowledge that Chelsea at the start of the season were a team of players who had barely played together before. Chelsea at the beginning of the season had zero cohesion playing vs teams that had 3,4 and sometimes 5+ years of playing together. Its plain common sense that Chelsea needed time to build cohesion because players need that time to learn each other and the tactics.

GallaDAWG was the most improved this season to me (outside of Palmer since he wasn't a Chelsea player last year). At this point, Clearlake should have just bought Brighton. Easier to just infuse Brighton with capital than try and turn Chelsea into Brighton with inflated costs since Chelsea will be forced to pay premiums.

@@Luke6fk I would buy Getafe. I see your point but the same argument could be argued in the other direction (I.e. Manchester City). At Getafe you can bring on young talent for far less wages and get time from the supporters until it clicks. Shoot, when Abramovich bought Chelsea they had some decent success in the past but they became a juggernaut after him. He bought them relatively cheaply and turned them into a billion dollar empire.

Poch did an OK job but he tried to turn a very technical good team into a team of runners and was never the right fit for the squad. He did manage to improve chelseas glass jaw that was so devestating at the beginning of the season, so credit to him for that. Its much harder to change mentally than tactics and he did that. Can go out with his head held high

I’m so so so glad to hear someone outside the Chelsea tactical bubble say this. It’s been so evident all year. This squad is just not built for poch football. It’s a squad BUILT to play possession football. Poch isn’t a possession manager. Our midfield was constantly over exposed and our defence could not stop conceding. Players like Gallagher excelled because they’re PERFECT for Poch football. I’m not saying it’ll be perfect with a possession manager, it’s still a young side that’s gelling, but we saw what this team can do with a bad fit… imagine if they actually had a manager that maximised their ability. Plus it’s another year of gelling. This team will come together in time

The squad is largely built for Pochs football. Enzo is not built for it. You dont turn to players like Mudryk, Jackson, Sterling Madueke and in some respects even Gusto if you want lots of slow build up and technical horizontal passing. You sign those players if you want to hit hard and fast with quick penetrating play and hard pressing. Chelseas recruitment has been all over the place. Theres not been a uniform approach window to window. Mostly they don't have these technical Enzo like possession players so to expect a coach to play that way for 1 player is just silly thinking by Eghbali and these directors.

@@littleninj0rno it is not cause Madrid are still playing quick counter attack football. And poch game isn't counter attack. He focuses more on transition play. Meaning when we are in position and we loose the ball. We win it back as quick ass possible. This distablizes your opponent and you can score quicker goal. The difference between counter attack and high press transition football is you don't wait for the opponent to attack you. You take the game to the opponent. Weather it be position base or not. This why often time you saw Chelsea not afraid to retain position and pin their opponent back but when doing this we don't have skill for player that can break the team down. Or when we do, do that Jackson miss the chances. His style of play is subsetable to counter attach thus he need fast player for recovery. Enzo was a bad signing from the beginning cause Chelsea is not city and even at city Enzo won't make it because he's positionally poor.

Brilliant Assessment and Spot on. Anybody realize they were undefeated without Enzo? To see them go forward was amazing and the results showed. Look at Cacideo. First half of the season was nothing but square & back passes to the nearest player. Then he starts going forward and was a beast. Good luck to Ponch. His agent must be extremely busy. He turned around a Trainwreck. If Burnley & Sheffield were wins instead of ties they're in CL.

Stop this stupid narrative. Enzo was playing with hernia and Cucurella was injured. Why was this not part of the analysis? He literally proved Gallagher didn't actually play Enzo's role but Cucu did. So, what's the comparison for? Cucu couldn't invert in presence of Enzo? Yeah bc they never played together. Poch is shit btw. Every HT talk made the team worse. What was that about?

De Zerbi seems perfect. It'll be a race between him deciding to leave and them deciding to sack him. Also, if he was frustrated with losing players every season at Brighton, that'll never happen at Chelsea. All their players are signed on till the rapture (or 7 years beyond that, in some cases).

I'm not actually sure he will be if they do choose him. His tactics are pretty risky for a team like Chelsea where losing three in a row pretty much equals being sacked, and he's fairly volatile in a similar way to Tuchel (and that didn't work out for him). Still, it'll be fun to see, albeit (almost certainly) with no Gallagher or Chalobah.

People often forget we finished 4th a few weeks before Abramovich bought the club, won notable cups (not counting community shield and UEFA super cups) in 97, 98 (x2) and 2000 and lost in finals and semis a few times. We actually finished closer to Man U in 1999 (4pts behind) than Arsenal did to City last year and like Arsenal were top at Christmas only to let it slip away in the second half of the season.

The fact is though, Poch was never a possession playing type of coach so it would be more challenging for him to figure out how to get such a young team to play that way. He tried, but eventually he turned to what he knows best. People will always stick to what they know works for them, especially when they get desperate. It begs the point that the hiring process needs to be more aligned with the clubs philosophy.

Yeah I had though at the appointment of Poch that it didn't make sense for the type of players we had especially with mount being sold but then I saw Poch say he had "evolved" his game tactically to suit the modern day and thought it might work... safe to say it did not. Seeing my team be so open defensively has been frustrating to say the least. Glad he's gone but these sporting directors better pick someone that actually fits this time out. The squad may be young but make no mistake, there's more ability in there than every other team in the league barring the top 3. Also great vid as always man!

Playing style had a massive bearing on the decision, as did recruitment. Also, the training of Poch was said to be too harsh and making the injury problems worse and Poch didn't want a dedicated set piece expert which Chelsea were insisting on due to the success of Arsenals set piece coaching.

Although they underperformed some metrics, Chelsea did rank top of the Premier League for Number of goals involving Cole Palmer

Interesting observations, but the conflicting data rankings could be due to Chelsea's significantly better form in the season's 2nd half. We could have tested this hypothesis with splitting the data into season halves.

Great analysis. But the question remains, should Chelsea try to emulate ManC with possession football, or try to outflank them with a different press and counter approach? Using an ice hockey analogy, I'd argue we should be looking to where the puck is going, not where it is now. Poch-ball was entertaining and was starting to work. I'm not convinced a new manager will be avle to out-Pep the maestro or even his apprentice Arteta.

Chelsea supporter here, I honestly think this video helped change my mind, at least to a certain degree, on Poch's departure/sacking/quitting (whatever you want to call it). A big part of me is still disappointed of course because I side with Poch's vision over the owners' vision, and I'm also pissed that Gallagher, who's impressed me this past season and who truly plays for the badge, is likely going to be sold as he doesn't really fit the style of team they want to build (and also Chalobah, who like Gallagher is a homegrown player and is Chelsea through and through at heart). But at least the decision to part ways no longer seems inexplicable to me like it did only a few days ago. Excellent analysis 👏

De Zerbi used to train Mudryk, and will be able to get most of of him and Enzo, which is where 80% of the investment is.

Enzo doesn’t suit a De Zerbi style team either… I’m unsure if you’ve watched Brighton play the last few years but the players that would thrive would be Gallagher and Caicedo. For the exact same reason as they did under Poch.

@@brandonjablasone7544 The problem is even when he comes back he won't be as fit as his team mates in pre season If Caicedo plays alongside Enzo his form will drop again However if he plays with Gallagher then we have a really solid defensive protection again We must find another place for Enzo Or we may as well not play Caicedo in that case put him on the bench and Play Gallagher with Enzo

Thanks for the insight. Really interesting and makes a lot of sense now why Poch left. It’s a real shame, we started to look like a team. With a few well thought out signings we could be challenging for a Champions league spot next season. The new owners have made some serious mistakes so far. The next coach has to be the right fit for what they are trying to do. I am not sure they will make the right choice.

I think you are right when it comes to the issue between how Poch wants to play and how some of the players act, but the reason he is leaving is that he probably put up an ultimatum about control and lost it.

Brilliant video. Hits the nail on the head. In footballing terms this is a 'no blame divorce'. Obviously you question getting Poch in in the first place. Maybe blame needs to go there, but on the other hand based on Chelsea only giving Poch a 2 year contract (the shortest possible contract you can give a manager without him being label an 'interim') I'm guessing they were non-committal in the first place. Chelsea have gone into this relationship with Poch with usually fatal "but maybe I can him" thought (change Poch's style of football). To be fair, Poch did try and play more of possession style game earlier on in the season, albeit very unsuccessfully. In the end, especially the last 5 games, he reverted to what he's done for most of his 15 years as a coach - vertical football. It fully makes sense for the Poch and Chelsea to go there separate ways. Note: As I Chelsea fan, I'm grateful for a lot of the work he's done this year (reuniting the dressing room, nurturing and protecting players, building team spirit and eventually getting us the team back into European football). He seems like a really good guys, and I genuinely wish him all the best in future, apart from when he plays against us 👋👋

Enzo, Desasi and Sterling going may have been something Poch wanted but saying Mudryk was not involved in the winning run at the end and not fancied is reaching a little as he started a lot of those games and probably only missed out on playing on the final day due to the concussion protocols. Desasi does not really fit a possession based team either as he is a poor passer which is why the desire to sell Chalobah who is better in pretty much all areas for less money than we paid for Desasi really highlights the poor thinking. No matter who as manager we get I am willing to bet that we will finish in a worse position next season with or without any potential points deduction as a result of any FFP breaches. I also think the football is likely to end up being dull (endlessly passing around and around is not my cup of tea) if Enzo is the focal point but I could be wrong on that front.

The reason for wanting to sell Gallagher that I've heard before is because he's an academy graduate. This means he was bought for peanuts so his sale would make a lot of profit which would help balance the books. But the reason in the video makes sense too.

This video is honestly fantastic and an almost perfect sum up. Just wanted to add that Gallagher isn't even a bad player in a possession side, but in such a side his playstyle is better suited to a deeper lying position. Poch actually managed to get him to play both in the last 5 games as depending on how far the opponent progressed he was either sitting at CDM or pressing hell like usual. Gallagher is a good player under ANY manager and a world class one under the right tactics. Wouldn't be surprised for Poch to sign him for wherever he goes next.
