Hi Fran Jones, As explained in the video, if hair has not grown in an area for less than 5 years, they may be dormant, and the follicles can still be stimulated for growth. If an area has not grown hair for more than 5 years, the follicle is likely dead. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi@@kiddpandadrinkswater4560, I advise you have the cause diagnosed properly with a physical examination as pattern hair loss is gradual hair thinning that occurs over years, and not bald spots that happen in just two months. That said, sudden causes of hair loss are usually treatable, but diagnosis of the cause is needed first. I hope this helps you.

Hi DATABASE 0.3 ST, If you've had laser hair removal done in the past, you will notice that although results do last longer than shaving, the hair eventually does grow back. I'm not familiar with the chemicals/enzymes you mention. I hope this helps you.

Question: sometimes I’ll have an itch on my scalp, and I’ll feel a little bump where it itches. It might get caught in my fingernail, and it looks like a little bulbous thing that feels like grain of salt or something. Sometimes with hair attached to it. If that came out of my head, does that mean that that hair is gone for good?

Hi rubicant112, The little bulb at the end of a hair shaft is usually keratin, or dead skin, and not the hair follicle, so hair does grow back. I hope this clarifies things for you.

I appreciate you sharing so much information. You stated that generally as long as a follicle has not gone past 5 years without producing hair it is dead. Are there factors that could cause the follicles to die before the 5 year mark? I have lost hair over the last 2 1/2 years, so I was curious what the likelihood is that your PRP treatment could stimulate those follicles to produce hair again?

Hi gsr852, It's not clear if you have experienced increased hair shedding over the last 2.5 years, which is usually temporary; or if you are experiencing progressive hair thinning, which is likely pattern hair loss. I would have to confirm what you have before recommending treatment. Shed hair does grow back without medical treatment, but if it grow back thinner, then treatment is needed. @@AmiyaPrasadMD Thank you for your response. I was diagnosed with alopecia areata in 2013. Since then I have had flares over the years where I had diffuse thinning, but cortisone shots would take care of the flares, and my hair would grow back. Over the past 2 1/2 years, the cortisone shots have not helped, and when I asked my dermatologist at my last appointment if he felt any of the hair loss was associated with MPB he said no. I read that PRP can help with MPB as well as alopecia areata. (Note: I do deal with chronic anxiety, PTSD, and panic disorder).

However, we treat alopecia areata patients on a case-by-case basis as our treatment does not treat the autoimmune condition affecting the scalp, but primarily a treatment for pattern hair loss. Hi Md Atif Akhtar, While technically chicken pox on the scalp can affect the hair follicle, it is unlikely if you manage your chicken pox blisters well to reduce chances of rupturing and scarring. I hope this helps you.

My plan is to use minoxidil and finasteride for approximately 12 months to strengthen and regrow as much of my existing hair as possible. Then, I will be getting a FUE hair transplant to fill in my hairline and whichever areas didn’t grow back from the medical treatment alone. Then, I will maintain with topical minoxidil and finasteride to maximize my potential and minimize additional hair loss. I’m about two months in and am already seeing new hair growth. I also have been micro needling twice a week.

Hi TSL999, You should consider your age at the time of transplant, as well as talk to your doctor about oral finasteride as it is more effective to block DHT systemically rather than just the scalp. Hi Jonathan Tricoli, I see your point, but we can stimulate growth from dormant hair follicles that are still viable, but currently not growing; and thicken thinning hair from hair due to pattern hair loss. Using your analogy, we can still maximize what you have, and increase it, with the proper strategy. I hope this helps you.

Even if you block DHT-formation with the most effective DHT-blocking drugs like finasteride or dutasteride, they only slow hair thinning, and don't stop it completely. Hi Dr. I'm new to your channel, and I would like to first of all say thank you for uploading this content. My question is, do you have any experience in dealing with African American hair? Hi Nipun Mittal, Tension or traction alopecia can damage the hair follicles permanently. If the follicles are not damaged, you will have to wait until hair grows back. Hair follicles damaged by tension cannot be treated for regrowth. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Without a proper examination to confirm the cause, you may just have stress-related hair shedding if the hairs you do have growing back are not thinner. I hope this helps you.

Hello doctor, I am male 23 years old and now my baldness level is NW 3-4. I try to use minoxidil 3% + 0.25% triamcinolone + 0.025% tretinoin during 2015-early 2016 and finasteride 1mg every 2 days,but i got weight gain 3 kg in 2 weeks and brain fog. In March 2017,i have been tried 5% minoxidil but i even worse for me that i gain weight more than 6kg in 3 weeks and sclap irritation. Now,i trying to use dermaroller 0.5 mm 2 times/week and 2% ketoconazole shampoo everyday and rosemary oil with dermaroller. After i use it,the hair shedding is decline maybe around 10-20 perday. But no sign for thicker hair in my crown and vertex area.

Hi Jhanna Rezqi, Sorry to hear that, but none of the treatments you mentioned will thicken your hair. You need to take finasteride daily for it to work properly, but it doesn't thicken hair much, and is more to slow hair thinning. Minoxidil doesn't thicken hair, but it keeps your thinning hair on your head longer. Look into the Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video if you are interested in thickening thinning hair. Great video, Doctor. Thanks for the information. I'm 28 years old and only noticed I was beginning to lose my hair when I was around 25. Strangely the norwood scale does not fit my balding. I am a 4 on the scale from the front but the back and top of my hair is not thinning at all and has always been very thick. Have you seen this before? I am now taking oral Finasteride and topical Minoxidil to halt the balding and hopefully thicken up the frontal area. Thank you in advance for any reply :) Tom

Hi @Tommy3AM, Sorry to hear about your problem. Male pattern hair loss can initially concentrate at the crown, and hairline, with less noticeable thinning in the mid scalp. There can be different patterns of thinning in men, and it is possible that there less aggressive thinning happening in the mid scalp as well, which can be confirmed with a scalp microscopy. Finasteride is primarily for slowing hair thinning; and minoxidil is doesn't treat hair thinning at all, as it appears to delay natural hair shedding for the appearance of fullness. Hi Solitary, Sorry to hear about your problem. If you have trichotillomania, and the hair follicles are not damaged from the tension of constant pulling, the hair can grow back on its own without treatment. However, the damage to your hair follicles, as well as the possibility of other concurrent hair loss causes like pattern hair loss, do need to be assessed with a proper physical examination. Hi Suatt38, Possibly, but finasteride should only be used after proper examination by a doctor because it's a prescription medication. The chances of side effects from finasteride are pretty rare at about 2% of users having them. Also, there are more common causes of erectile dysfunction, which also affect men who are not on finasteride, including stress, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet, and aging. Often, men on finasteride overlook their lifestyle choices if they encounter problems, but a healthier lifestyle needs to be considered as well. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Doctor, would it be better than to get your treatment earlier in the hair loss progression? Inventory on my head is still not horrible but it's getting worse each week. I'll be 28 in January and I don't know if being about middle of Norwood scale (front thin, gone on temples, crown seems fine) qualifies me for your treatment.

As you have a relatively young onset of pattern hair loss, you are likely highly DHT-sensitive so you can also benefit from a DHT blocker to slow hair thinning, and a treatment like Hair Regeneration to thicken thinning hair and stimulate hair growth. Hi@@caesarsblues, The term hair fall can be confusing because pattern hair loss is hair thinning, and hair shedding which is more closely related to "falling" is normal, and the hair grows back. It hasn't been determined yet if you have thinning hair, or hair shedding. Shed hair grows back without treatment, but pattern hair loss is when shed hair grows back thinner, and/or there is a delay in regrowth. If a hair follicle is still viable, and hasn't grown hair for less than 5 years, then growth can be stimulated with the TrichoStem Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video. Hello doctor. I have mitral valve prolapse with moderate regurgitation. I've been prescribed with beta blockers and Ramipril. Will using Minoxidil have any interaction with these medications or my heart condition in general. Minoxidil is a vasodilator so should it be okay to use it with my condition?

Hi Aaa Aaa, This is best discussed with your doctor who knows all the details about your condition as minoxidil is a blood thinner. Ask your doctor specifically about minoxidil and the interactions with the drugs they prescribed. Minoxidil is over the counter, but there may specific warnings with your other medications that are best reviewed by a cardiologist. I hope this helps you.

Hi Happy Life, People do respond differently to the Hair Regeneration treatment. That particular patient was able to thicken his thinning hair, get significantly faster hair growth, and was able to to get growth from dormant hair follicles that were previously not growing. Although patients normally experience these benefits, the rate of growth and thickening can differ. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Bwp Bwp, Sorry to hear about your problem, but it's unclear if you are suffering from pattern hair loss, which is gradual hair thinning, or hair shedding where hair falls out due to an unspecified condition, but does grow back. I suggest you see a doctor first for a proper physical exam of your scalp to determine what you have exactly before considering treatment. I hope this helps you.

I'm 23 old female. When I'm 18 I had some minor hair fall issues and went to a dermatologist and she suggested minoxidil for a year without giving proper knowledge. And I'm unaware of it (it is said that it must be used for life long and I don't know about all such things) I blindly trusted her and used it. After discontinuing it I had severe hair loss and im going bald wherever I used it(other areas are healthy). Hi Menaga kanakaraj, Sorry to hear about your problem. Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but it appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed. Biopsies can be used to diagnose for female pattern hair loss, but cannot reveal that hair follicles are dead because follicles are underneath the scalp skin, and follicles that are not growing hair can be dormant and still can be stimulated for hair growth. Hi! Very informative video doctor! I’ve read somewhere online and been told by a similar clinic to yours here in sweden that hair follicules aren’t dead, they’re still active but rather not producing any hair anymore. Hence the term ”dormant” comes in to place. I struggle to find real answers to this online but i cant come to a conclusion. What are your thaughts on this?

Hi @fillebubben, The differences between dormant and dead hair follicles are already discussed in this video, so I'm not sure what you mean. Generally, dormant hair follicles have not grown hair for less than 5 years, and can be treated to grow hair again, as we do with our treatment. Hair follicles that have not grown hair for more than 5 years are likely dead, and can't be revived. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Rof Rangululu, I would like to know how the assessment was made. Follicles that have not grown hair for 5 years or more are likely dead, and no treatment can revive them. However, if it's under 5 years, they may dormant, and growth can still be stimulated as shown in the video. I hope this helps you.

Im 20 years old right now, my hair on top thinned a little bit but my temples are stil intact. I buyed saw palmetto because it reduces dht and emo oil to apply on the scalp. It is believed that emo oil due to the fatty acids in it wil get rid of the DHT that already caused my follikels on top to shrink.... Hi Maher Adil, Saw palmetto, if it works, is not a reliable DHT-blocker as it is a supplement, and supplements don't have consistent amounts of active ingredients because they are not regulated like drugs. Hi ThE sLaYeRs, Sorry to hear about your problem. You do need to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis for male pattern hair loss, so if you can't see us, I suggest you see a local doctor. If you do have male pattern hair loss at your age, you are likely highly DHT-sensitive, but the problem is that I don't prescribe DHT-blockers like finasteride for men until they are at least 18, as DHT is still important for male physical development. Hi Sidhartha Barman, I don't advise hair transplants for diffuse hair thinning as you still have viable hair follicles, even if they are growing thinning hair. A transplant too close to native hair can permanently damage those follicles, which transplant surgeons justify because they are thinning anyway, but we can thicken and save thinning hair with our treatment. my hair has fallen out due to folliculitis and no regrowth yet after 6months all hair that has been lost is transplanted hair so hopefully it can be saved

Hi Rèd, As explained in the video and its title, dormant hair follicles that are not growing hair, but still viable can be stimulated to grow hair again. Hey. So I’m currently 16, for a while now a lot of my hair has been falling off when I take a shower or dry my hair (for 7 months). I never payed attention to it, until now. Ever since 5 days ago, the back of my head has been feeling really uncomfortable when I lay down. When I pulled out a mirror a noticed that combing the back of my hair there was multiple gaps. Hi Kenneth Videos901, Male pattern hair loss is progressive hair thinning, not hair shedding. It is normal to shed 50-100 hairs a day, and they do grow back. Pattern hair loss happens when the shed hair grows back thinner, and there is a delay in regrowth. The cause of hair shedding needs to be diagnosed by an experienced doctor in a scalp examination. The most common cause of temporary hair shedding is severe stress, which is called telogen effluvium, but this usually doesn't require medication for the shed hair to eventually grow back. If you can't see us for an examination, I suggest you see a local doctor in your area. I hope this helps you.

Hi@@varma8682, Scalp hair growth is not related to rate of body hair growth. Also, it's not clear if your "baby hairs" were once thick in the past, and has since miniaturized with pattern hair loss. A proper evaluation of your scalp is needed. I’m 18, due to cornavirus everything was locked up months ago like barbershops etc. my hair was super long and I needed a haircut. But their were no barbers to be found. Hi Hector Gomez, Wearing a beanie or any hat will not cause hair thinning or baldness. A proper examination is needed to determine if you have male pattern hair loss, where hair progressively thins due to a genetic scalp sensitivity to the hormone DHT. If you have male pattern hair loss starting in your 20s or younger, you are likely highly DHT-sensitive, and need a DHT-blocker like finasteride to control it, and slow hair thinning. Hi @viralwood374, Combing your hair, even if it's occasionally rough, won't damage your hair follicles. However, you should not be putting constant strain on your follicles by repeatedly pulling on tangled hair with a comb. If you have hair that tends to tangle, I suggest you use detangling comb, which has wide or rotating bristles to detangle your hair before styling. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Luffy Monkey, If someone has too many dead hair follicles, even surgery won't achieve the type of density you are asking about, because there aren't enough available grafts to cover the whole head, and grafted hair cannot be spaced as close together as natural hair. So, to answer your question, the only way to achieve that type of scalp coverage is with a hairpiece or wig. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Cheran Karthik, Sorry to hear about your problem, but you need this physically examined properly to determine the cause of your hair loss. Male pattern hair loss is hair thinning, not shedding, and it doesn't normally start at 16. Also, temporary shedding due to stress doesn't normally last 2 years, and shed hair doesn't mean your follicles are dead as the hair does grow back. You need a proper examination to diagnose this, so I suggest you see a local doctor as I can't give you a diagnosis based on your description alone. I hope this helps you.

Hi Sonam Diki, There is no way to tell by examining the scalp as follicles are below the skin. However, if hair has not grown for less than 5 years, the follicles may be dormant, and can still be stimulated for hair growth. If hair has not grown in area that is smooth bald for over 5 years, the follicle is likely dead. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi varsha murukan, You haven't been confirmed to have pattern hair loss, and shed hair doesn't mean the roots come out. Male pattern hair loss is progressive hair thinning, not hair shedding. It is normal to shed 50-100 hairs a day, and they do grow back. Pattern hair loss happens when the shed hair grows back thinner, and there is a delay in regrowth. If you have pattern hair loss, it is genetic, and hardwired into your DNA, so it can't be cured, but with medical treatment it can be managed so you can thicken thinning hair, and stimulate hair growth so you have as much hair as possible, for as long as possible. Hi Amrita Chatterjee, It depends on whether or not your hair was once thick, or is genetically thin. If it became thin due to progressive pattern hair loss, it can be treated so hair is thicker, which needs to be done with medical treatment and not over-the-counter products. However, if it was never thick to begin with, then treatment can't change the characteristics of your hair. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi@@_aryannegi, Sorry to hear about your problem. You do need a proper diagnosis about the cause of your hair loss first. However, if you are confirmed to have male pattern hair loss, you cannot get the density you had when you were younger. Male pattern hair loss is a genetic condition hardwired into the DNA, so it's managed, not cured. We can get you the maximum coverage, and for as long as your genetics would allow, but it can't be cured. 14 is very young age to start onset of hair loss, so a physical examination by an experienced doctor is needed. Hi NM K, Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but it appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed. Finasteride is more beneficial than minoxidil as it can slow down and stabilize hair thinning, and it can be used long-term more predictably. If you have male pattern hair loss starting in your 20s or younger, you are likely highly DHT-sensitive, so you need a DHT-blocker like finasteride. DHT-blockers like finasteride are prescription medications, so you need to see a doctor for a proper examination and diagnosis, then be issued a prescription for finasteride. Hi Charmayne M, It is possible to regrow hair after lichen planopilaris. Treatment usually consists of corticosteroids, and antimalarial medication. You can see a local dermatologist about treatment. I hope this helps you.

Microscopy which is often used in the scalp when diagnosing hair loss may be able to determine if you have some hair growth you're not yet seeing with the naked eye. I hope this helps you.

Hi doctor, im a 24 year old male and ive been noticing a difference in my hairline. The corners at the top of my hairline have moved back a little bit but when i look closely i can see that there are still a bunch of dark colored hairs but they do not grow past their very short length. Hi Detox LIVE, It does sound like your hair is thinning, which is a likely sign of male pattern hair loss. Dormant hairs still have viable hair follicles, but are not growing currently. Male pattern hair loss is progressive hair thinning that occurs gradually over time, not just over 6 months; and it doesn't cause bald patches, rather thinning in the crown, hairline, and mid scalp. Hi CompaJavi, Sorry to hear that, but constant hair plucking can permanently damage hair follicles. At your age, there isn't much that can be done but wait to see if they follicles are still viable and can grow. We normally try to stimulate hair growth with our treatment featured in the video, but it's primarily for pattern hair loss. We do occasionally treat people with damaged hair follicles, but it's on a case-by-case basis, and they just have to wait and see after treatment if at least some of the damaged hair follicles are still viable. Hi Lukoil 49, It is best to have your dandruff problem treated, and try not to traumatize your scalp so much that hair growth is affected. Hair follicles go in a resting phase at different times, so it's hard to say how long it will take your hair to grow back. I hope this helps you.

5 years ago i suffered trichotillomania, i plucked my front-line hair and it hasnt grow back since then. I have been applying 5% minoxidil on the bald spots for almost 2 - 3 years and i see bare minimun results. Will my hair grow back? Or the follicles are damaged forever?

Minoxidil mostly works on hair that is currently growing, and has limited effect on stimulating growth from hair follicles currently not growing but still viable. Minoxidil is mostly for extending the hair growth cycle, and delaying the shedding cycle so more hair appears on the scalp, but these hairs may not be thick or grow very long. The extent of damage due to your trichotillomania may be partially assessed with a microscopic exam, but not entirely as it is difficult to assess permanently damaged hair follicles. However, malnutrition can place stress on the body that can lead to temporary hair shedding, and/or brittle hair shafts. Improving your diet can allow for shed hair to grow back, but it will not treat hair thinning due to genetic pattern hair loss. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Sir, a general question if a hair follicles gets irreversibly damaged due to chemical accident then the hair that was attached to that particular hair follicle will fall out but any maximum time period for that hair to remain on scalp.... Hi Mr. Malik, Excess oil doesn't cause hair loss, and not washing your can cause a build up of hair that was supposed to shed naturally. It is normal to shed 50-100 hairs a day, and they do grow back. Pattern hair loss is when shed hair grows back progressively thinner, and there is a delay in regrowth. A proper diagnosis is needed to see if you actually have pattern hair loss, so if you can't see us about it, I suggest you see a local doctor for a diagnosis. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Aditi Srivastava, Have you seen a doctor about pattern hair loss? It is normal to shed 50-100 hairs a day, and they do grow back. Female pattern hair loss is about hair thinning. Also, 5% minoxidil is not usually prescribed for women. I don't perform PRP alone for hair loss, and mesotherapy is not practiced in the US. If a hair is overtop with its soft white root, is there any chance to regrowth of that perticular hair?

Hi Nandini Dutta, While your question is a little unclear, the white bit at then end of a shed hair is usually dead skin or keratin, not the hair follicle, and shed hair grows back. Pattern hair loss is when shed hair grows back thinner, and this there is a delay in regrowth. I hope this clarifies things for you.

How would one know if a follicle is dormant ?

Hi Aditya M, You can't really tell by looking at the scalp, but basically if an area of scalp has not grown any hair for over 5 years, the follicle is likely dead; but if it's been less than 5 years, the follicle may be dormant and still be viable. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi@@caesarsblues, Yes, it is possible to thicken thinning hair, and stimulate growth from dormant hair follicles current not growing with the Hair Regeneration treatment, as shown in the video. You may not restore the scalp coverage you had before suffering from pattern hair loss, but you can significant improvement in hair thickness and new hair growth. Hi Prashanth pradheep kondaboina, Sorry to hear that, but minoxidil 10% is prescription strength, so I suggest you consult the doctor who prescribed it to you. I don't prescribe 10% minoxidil in my practice, and our patients who have our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration treatment don't need to use minoxidil at all. I hope this clarifies things for you.
