Why Lobster Is So Expensive | So Expensive

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Lobster went from prison food to a well-known delicacy. Seafood was left out of rationed foods during WWII, and with the advent of railway transportation, lobster became known as an exotic delicacy.

Funny true story... My wife and I went to very upscale, sophisticated restaurant for an anniversary. We were seated in a nice secluded booth, but very close to the live lobster tank. As we sat there people watching and talking,we saw each waiter and waitress bring a couple over to the lobster tank and let each choose the living lobster they wanted for dinner. Interestingly, we noticed that after the chosen lobster was ceremoniously removed from the tank ,placed on a flat s.steel platter, and then carried into the kitchen.. The happy couple went back to their table, and sat down. Then, we began noticing something odd...after say five minutes or so, a waiter would carry a live lobster from the kitchen back to the lobster tank and drop it back in the tank. After seeing this process repeated several times, my wife and I had a light bulb moment. Ha,ha, the kitchen wasn't actually killing and cooking the live lobster. They were probably serving frozen Lobster. It was all for ceremony. Reminded us of the movie with Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick where rich people were told they were eating eating endangered animals at $100,000.00 per plate, but they were served turkey tettrazini.

You can't really freeze lobster though. I mean technically you can do it, but it doesn't come out right and you need to cook it first. That probably isn't what is happening. It is entirely possible picking the lobster is for show(I know Red Lobster doesn't keep track of who ordered what lobster), but the waiter probably was bringing out lobster from the back.

Depending on which country you are in (or even in which part of the producing country), lobster prices vary quite a bit and also depending on the season. In Eastern America, and during the in-season, Atlantic lobsters can be cheaper than many varieties of fish. Of course in Europe and especially in Asia, lobsters are outrageously priced, especially the spiny lobsters

While I’m now vegetarian and no longer eat lobsters, many beautiful summer nights were spent on the restaurant pier where the lobstermen quite literally pull up, and unload into the kitchen. You can feel how much the industry has shaped every aspect of the early years in these towns like mine.

Back when I worked at a pet shop we'd get fiddler crabs missing limbs all the time because they get hungry in transit and rip each other's limbs off for a snack. Crabs be hardcore. I'm a live crab and lobster supervisor in the shellfish factory i work for. Here in UK, female lobsters carrying eggs are legal to be sold, the Chinese don't want them but we do ship them all around Europe, there's no such thing as too big lobsters either, although they do taste much worse than let's say 600-g 1000g ones. They can only be too small in which case fishermen would release them back into the ocean, or in very few cases they would try to mix them in with the rest of the lobsters and we would be returning the small ones as we do weigh every individual lobster by hand.

No, the first advantage is that scientists want billions to study it. Then later they'll say, like evolution that they've never found any real evidence of and now call "natural selection." You might notice that after they couldn't find any evidence of species mutation, i.e. the missing link, they decided it must be change WITHIN the species. Of course, EVERYBODY already knew that. People in just a couple of generations have gotten bigger and taller. So now they call global warming, "climate change." They changed their minds after it started getting colder in several areas and other scientists proved it. Oh well, wrong again, give em' a few more billion and eventually they'll figure it out, if you don't go broke first.

There's actually a province here in Ph in which lobster are used to be fisherman's staple food. And then business men knew of this, they've started to negotiate with local fishermen. They are buying lobsters for insanely low price from them and businessmen bring lobsters in the city and sold them expensively.

having a lot of family in Massachusetts, lobster was a classic food in summer.. but I felt bad for the little dudes. Insanely delicious though (imo), with lemon and melted butter. It's very rich. Like shrimp but with a slightly different texture and more buttery taste (it's not salty/fishy tasting)
