I’ve always been curious about this breed. I learned a lot from this.

I didn't know these chickens could cost this much. I'm from the southern Philippines where these chickens aren't rare though still uncommon. I used to get these once in a while when I ask to buy for 'native' chickens. My supplier source them from highland farmers who doesn't make any distinction between these and the other local breeds. They are all specially good for making soup/stock based dishes but i have since asked to leave out these black boned ones. Kids don't like them

Best brooding chicken I have. She consistently hatches at least 3 sets of chicks a year. She last hatched 11 of 12 eggs.

My grandmother mother used to have a flock of these chickens. They're all black to the meat and she gave me two chicks but when it was time to go back home, Mom told me animals are not allowed aboard the ship. I was devastated because I only go there very very rarely, even now I haven't go there close to 15 years.

as Indonesian, never in a million years I would expect to see Cemani chicken farm in USA and yes Ayam means chicken. so saying Ayam Cemani chicken is like saying Bank of America Bank 😁

The breed's name is Ayam Cemani though. So it'd be weird to say "Ayam Cemani Ayam" in Indonesian but in English or any other language it's correct to say "Ayam Cemani chickens" since Ayam doesn't mean chickens in English and Cemani isn't the breed's international name

@@emrafighifari2675 Not really. The right name is Masala chai but it's also accepted and common for people to say chai or chai tea for that drink. But there's no term such as Cemani chicken for Ayam Cemani chickens. It's the same as no one in Indonesia would call bulldogs for bullanjing. The right way is obviously anjing bulldog, because even though the word for dog is said twice they carry different meanings. One is the breed's name and the other one is for the species.

They're not actually that expensive. It is hard to find non mixed flocks, and purity has a price but I've never seen anything close. They're for sure a more profitable chicken, maybe like 60 bucks, that's the higher price I've seen, 20-50 if it's got any less desirable genetics depending on what.

@@TR4R it's affordable and hardly 'expensive'. i've eaten these chickens before and it's pretty much almost the same price as eating a lobster roll. the only people who'd pay top dollar for these chickens are western capitalists seeking to drive prices up and make an insane profit off these birds. they don't taste much different than normal chickens too. better quality texture for sure but other than that, it's just chicken.

I think It is same as kadak naath. If you mate kadak naath male and female, the eggs will be all kadak naath. Kadak naath are extremely active and don't store fat in their body. Even dhoni was into kadak naath breeding.

In India also we have chicken breed called kadaknath originated in Central India's state of Madhya Pradesh. They are also called as 'kali masi' which means fowl with black flesh. It's said to have medicinal properties and rich in iron which makes them black in colour. IT was an endangered species so government decided to give it to poultry farmers and now it's in good quantity but still it's 7-8 times more expensive and eggs are 6-10 times more expensive than normal chicken 😅. But both these breeds are different

Some people say it taste bad, some say it taste better than regular and some say it taste just like regular but leaner. Maybe there are a lot more varieties than people realize though they all look the same.

In India also, we have this breed of chicken, locally known as "Kadaknath". Their origin lies in the Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh province and nearby Chattisgarh province. MS Dhoni, the ex-Indian cricketing legend does farming of this breed of chicken only. Regarding the pricing in Gaya, Bihar it costed me INR 900 per kg alive, and if you talk about the meat only then it reached approx INR 1200 per kg. I have tasted it, along with 5-6 other of my family members and as per all of our opinions, it was't that much great in the taste. The local desi chicken and farm chickens of India tastes much better than Kadaknath.

I used to live in Hanoi, Vietnam. A neighbor had a chicken that looked just like these, I don't know if it was a real Ayam Cemani but it was completely jet black. I had to pass it every time I walked to breakfast and it always creeped me out.

The main nemesis of Cemani chickens were feral dogs, jackals, and some species of eagles. No need to be afraid with that chicken anyway unless if you were amongst those three groups i mentioned above. Oh, tell your neighbour to keep that chicken away from the shamans since most of the time shamans would happily look for that chicken as the main ingredients for some rituals.

The Svart Hona is also all black. The hen lay about 200 eggs per year, which is 2x Ayam.

I have some Ayam Cemani, but they're sensitive to the cold winters in my area so the Svarthöna are more valuable to my flock quality. Was very exciting to find a quality hatchery.

Where I live there are somewhat common. Far less common than your average farm chicken no doubt but I see them pretty regularly at reasonable prices.

I can tell it's Indonesia simply from the title since ayam is actually chicken in both Indonesian and Malay while Cemani is native to Java Island. Ayam means Chicken, Cock, Rooster, Hen, Biddy, Chick, Capon, or whatever name you had in English for the animal. If you need to be specific, just attach an explanatory term to it. By the way, Ayam Cemani Chicken is kind of redundant, and the direct translation to English would be "Cemani Chicken Chicken."

Ayam cemani artinya jenis yang hitam, maka mereka tambahin "Chicken" di belakangnya. Coba lu tanya orang Indo ini jenis apa ? Pasti dijawab "ayam cemani" mereka gak pernah jawab "cemani" doang.

We also have this chicken in India 🇮🇳, (Kerala), we call it karinkozhi( means black hen). And it's expensive here in Kerala.

It's funny to me that I learned of these chickens at a very young age due to an old anime called Cooking Master Boy. Ironic considering these chickens aren't raised to be eaten as confirmed in the vid.

Maybe I'm nuts- but these chickens are about $50 here in Eastern USA. I see them at swaps all the time, though they're snatched up very quickly. My best friend purchased a trio for $150 a couple years back.

Did you not watch the video? They already address why Cemani chickens are waaaay cheaper in USA. Its because they are not pure breeds compared to Indonesian ones.

@@helsinki they aren't purebreed in Indonesia. There is no certificate. and purebreed is not always desirable. There is a white horse breed in California. YOu can't have a pure breed, because if you do, it dies. For this breed to survive, it needs to breed with a non-white horse.

These chickens have their own apartments, while most chickens are in a warehouse with a million other chickens lol.

Cute.... I love and want to have them. We in our house we also have lots of chicken. We produce them for their eggs and for their chicks to get many coz we sell them.but I want just one of this as Pet.

FYI : ayam means Chicken so instead of called it ayam cemani chicken, its better called it Cemani Chicken Btw, can you guys make an report about Batik Tulis or another indonesian traditional fabric like tenun or songket? Cemani is a village in Sukoharjo. Ngruki is also inside Cemani village.

May I ask, is is pronounced 'semani' as in this video, or is it pronounced 'Chemani'? Because I've only heard it pronounced 'Chemani,' when I was living in Asia. But only every visited Indonesia, never lived there or learned the language and have never encountered any breeders of this chicken, irl.

The chickens and roosters in Indonesia on the film footage here look really unhealthy in their feathers. I am no expert. Thats just what it looks like to me in comparison to the gal from America. Why is that and how can the breeders in Indonesia be helped so their chickens dont look unkempt and unhealthy (not just looks but making sure the birds are physically healthy)? Different enclosures? Since it routinely sprayed, that makes me wonder. From what little I know of Chickens in homesteading, that seems quite different from how American chicken coops are kept. The birds in Indonesia the feathers just looked really unhealthy.

The ridiculous price and high demand is due to beliefs that cemani chicken is some kind of spiritual medium. Java people used to be Hindu, and they use it for spiritual ceremony. Today the demand for the chicken to be use in spiritual ceremony is still there but not that many because people of Java have become mostly Muslim and Christian.

Actually it is not truly related with Hinduism, before Hinduism and Buddhism in java island there is a local belief, just like Shinto that mixed with Buddhism in Japan, the local belief for Javanese people is kejawen that mixed with Hinduism

im lucky in that i know a few people that breed these birds. My bird that just passes was a cemani aseel cross. Im miss my Chaaya bird, she was my shadow, just wanted to cuddle with me all the time.

“Own some money” chickens. 💀 “Om sumani” chickens. “Iron Somali” chickens.

I breed black quail here in Texas. I had a few hatch on me and decided to keep the line going.

A javanese friend of mine also told me about the usage of that chicken on local witchcraft ritual and protection from witchcraft attack like voodoo. Another reason why it's expensive 😅

We also get this chicken called Kadaknath. From Konkan Division Maharashtra india 😊

I found a place that sells these for about $100 a pop…very tempting to get my own Goth Flock.
