Why Stone Crab Claws Are So Expensive | So Expensive

Stone crab claws are one of the priciest seafoods you can buy. Depending on their size, claws can cost as much as $70 per pound. Unlike most other crustaceans, it's illegal to harvest the body of a stone crab, so fishermen must only collect the claws before returning the rest of the crab to the ocean. So what makes these claws so coveted? And why are they so expensive?

The bodies don’t taste good. However, if you throw the bodies in the water the crabs can grow back their claws, or other animals will eat the bodies. You people are over reacting, and if you think it’s unfair compare our brain sizes to the brain size of a crab. Although, that might not hold up because if you think it’s cruel your brain might be closer to the size of a crab than a human.

@@IceKnight678 As a marine biologist (prior to turning to neuroscience), until we (as in fish biologists etc etc) managed to successfully artificially produce the myriad of seafoods we take from the oceans then the word "sustainable" is just a BS word to be thrown around by politicians and the like who have no understanding of what this really means. Don't get me wrong, i'm not slagging you or your comment but just really commenting upon another BS video about "sustainability" so that some businesses can justify some paperwork in order to keep afloat. Plus I'm also a seafood lover. So i'd rather come out and say we are pillaging like no tomorrow and we don't really care because this is the truth and then one need not tell any lies nor feel guilty at all. However, when we try to convince ourselves re the word "sustainability' then we are in the realms of fantasy land LOL. Just my take as an ex marine biologist.

It's not as bad as most people think. The primary reason the crabs die without their claws isn't because of starvation (they are bottom-feeders), but because they use their claws for self defense. I'm personally against harvesting both claws, but crabs are a lot more capable than most people think. Their claws grow back pretty quickly, they just aren't big enough to legally harvest for a couple of years. Biologists don't think that they experience pain either, so it doesn't physically hurt them. It just makes them a lot more vulnerable.
