When filtering it pays to be very aware of a couple of things. In actual traffic jams car drivers are more likely to open their door, (to get an idea of what's happening ahead). It's quite difficult to prepare for someone suddenly opening the door, but they will often give a sign - look for seat belt being removed. They may already look quite animated in their car. When filtering in general, look at the front wheel of vehicles, and gaps appearing - it's an early sign of someone making a maneuver - if wheels turn into your path it's likely that someone might be about to change lanes. Also, try to look at mirrors - people do usually look before maneuvering, although it DOESN'T mean that they've seen you. Above all - take your time, ride respectfully, be very aware and ride defensively. If it looks in any way risky, relax - an opportunity will probably arise soon enough. Lastly, this might sound stupid but you should be very aware of the dimensions of your motorbike - don't squeeze your way through. ✌️

Checking in from Utah, it will be nice for starters having the filtering. It is on roads 45mph or less posted speed limit. Rider to stay under 15mph while filtering. On roads with 2 or more lanes of traffic in same direction. So not all roads. But at least it is a start. Hopefully people will get used to it and understand that it needs to be expanded to include in stop and go traffic on the freeway. It’s funny though that Utah doesn’t even require helmets, but they are adding this law to increase safety for motorcyclists.

Now that he has had the opportunity to experience living in the Lone Star paradise, he whines a lot less about living in the "Golden State." California has a strong economy, good paying jobs, lots of public land that's open to motorcycles, better than average weather, no hurricanes or tornados, decent fishing and miles of stunning shoreline and sandy beaches. There are many reasons why it is so much cheaper to live elsewhere. You're probably right though Rafael, you wouldn't like it here. 😛

@@NathanH172 its still kind of important to be made legal. California also used to be the same for a longtime where it was just tolerated but it was never necessarily illegal. Making it legal helps other people understand that you're legally allowed to do that, and therefore, protects you from people trying to intentionally get in your way or open a door. In fact, its illegal in California for drivers to open their doors. It would just need to be something that should be pushed to state legislatures to pass and make legal.

My understanding is there's a difference between filtering and splitting. Filtering here in Australia is where the traffic is stationary you can travel at up to 30km/h between traffic (2 lanes going the same direction) to get to the front of the queue. Splitting appears to be whilst traffic is moving (possibly slowly) which is not legal in Australia. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but you could be booked for it.

And sure enough, when the light turned green and the guy in front of me had just let off his brake, I got hit from behind.... If I hadn't been there, she would have hit him, so really none of it makes any damned sense, except to say I would have been safer splitting, as decades of splitting have proven.

Have been a car driving for two decades and only recently started to ride a motorcycle daily (in my country Malaysia, scooters, moped and big bikes are all classified as motorcycles), I used to be irritated with motorcyclists lane splitting, could also due to being a bit jealous that they could cut through the jam while I was stuck, but now as a rider, I absolutely agree with you on the safety aspects, though that comes with saving time as well; not all car drivers are motorcyclists but almost all, or at least most, motorcyclists are car drivers as well, I feel like car drivers can have lots of blind spots and get distracted, and that is dangerous for us riders, getting away from cars as soon as possible is a necessity. Fortunately, lane splitting is legal in my country. However, I know of impatient bikers who want to ride fast, faster than they should, that could be the reason why car drivers get irritated with motorcyclists. I'm generally a moderate rider, I ride slow when lane splitting, don't want to scratch people's vehicles or bump into a car that didn't give signal, and yeah, also a lot of our bikes are air-cooled, not good getting stuck in traffic with cars.

Papa yam! Filtering will be legal here in Utah on May 15. But with serious restrictions. Only when traffic is stopped on roads with a 45 mph limit or lower. Rider is limited to 15 mph during filtering.

I don't want to split through traffic while it's mobile, but I would like to filter through stationary traffic at a light or in a backup. I don't like being at the back at the mercy of people who forget to pull their face from their phone.

UK rider here and filtering just makes sense, don't get me wrong I don't always do it but if the road & conditions allow then it makes no sense to sit behind a Chelsea tractor spewing out diesel fumes. I remember my riding instructor was constantly in my ear saying make good progress and actually taught me to filter on his lessons. During my test I had the opportunity to filter on a couple of occasions but didn't want to make a mistake however when the test instructor told me I had passed and after I stopped jumping around with excitement he said....So why didn't you filter at those two spots?......That was three years ago, filtering is just a part of my life now like walking I suppose. Cheers, top channel btw. :-)

in utah lane filtering on roads (not freeway) when all traffic is stopped with a max speed of 15mph. I think this is the only safe way to do it, lane "splitting" is dangerous and filtering is only to help with traffic, and to prevent bikes from being rear-ended by texty drivers.

Here in São Paulo, Brazil, we basically only drive doing that because of the heavy traffic. But here we call it something like "hall" or "corridor" (Corredor, in portuguese), the space between two walls

Feels great too, followed a cop splitting outside of the houses of parliament, even split on the roads around Buckingham palace lol Can't believe it's illegal in most US states, thought it was just a few they you couldn't!

I just got back from Italy and rented a bike while I was there. While they basically have no rules on the road people are just better drivers there. Almost nobody was distracted while driving. We spent two weeks there and didn't see a single car accident. I can't drive down 635 in Dallas without seeing at least one major freeway accident.

This is the reason Belgium will allow you to deduct a motorcycle from your taxes if you use it for commuting to work. Because of the results of multiple research firms all saying 5% more motorcycles instead of cars would reduce traffic by 40ish%. That being said, this is the most dangerous period for lanesplitting. Winter is just over and drivers havent seen many motorcycles for a while now.
