Why Isn't the Bible in Chronological Order? | Conversations with Dan

If you have ever read the Bible and wondered why the books are ordered in the way they are - you aren't alone. So, how did our English bible get to be the way it is? Why can't it be in chronological order? When it really comes down to it - is there a good way to get a clear picture of the overall story of the Bible? Let's look into the history of the Bible and see how we can know its story.

So many pastors today couldn’t even begin to exposit a teaching like this but they just get up and give a motivational Ted talk to the people sitting in a “ church building “ I appreciate and I’m grateful to Elohim that their are men that know the word of God. I know there are verses that points to him having siblings but it's questioned because of how the word "brother" was translated and used during that time. It was interchangeable, meaning a brother wasn't always referred as blood brother. Thanks so much.

  • @Broadwaycoc

@@ellbdotmusic3521 Dear Friend, Jesus clearly had siblings. John mentions that they did not believe on him during his earthly ministry (John 7:5). While the word adelphos meaning brother can mean a brother in Christ, the context determines the meaning. In Matthew 12:46 his mother and brothers come looking for him among the crowd. This is clearly his own family. In Matthew 13:55 mentions his mother, Joseph, and his four brothers and his sisters. In Acts 1, we find his mother and brothers waiting for the Holy Spirit in the upper room. In Galatians 1:19 Paul mentions “James the Lord’s brother.” So, the answer is yes. Jesus had siblings, born to Mary and Joseph the couple. Only Jesus was born of the virgin and conceived by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35). God bless! Dan Owen

Hi, Really enjoyed this video. Although I am on the other side of the planet (we live in Norway), I am thankful for your videos, and being able to subscribe and follow your channel. Thank you. Question: Talking about the chronological order of the Bible or the Biblical storyline, I noticed that you included Chronicles (and Daniel). I wondered upon this, since most of the storyline in the OT is found in Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings and Ezra-Nehemiah. Am I mistaken - have I forgotten something in Chronicles that is not found in the storyline of Samuel/Kings? Appreciate your feedback. Again, thank you for your videos 🙋‍♂

  • @Broadwaycoc

The book of Chronicles has the same basic storyline but includes many additional things about the temple and the priesthood. Chronicles is more about how the holy place and the holy priesthood and the worship of the temple figured in to the story line. Chronicles also goes back long before the time of the kings. Kings tells the story focusing on kings and prophets and does not center nearly as much on priesthood, temple, and temple worship at different points in the story. Hope this helps. - Dan

Margaret, the books of Kings and Chronicles are in no way identical, but at times, they cover the same thing. The account in 1 Kings 22 is included in 2 Chronicles 18-19 because the southern king, Jehoshaphat, stepped out of line in making friends with evil Ahab in the north. The book of Kings deals with much more regarding the Northern kingdom, Israel, along with some things about the southern kingdom. The focus in Chronicles is almost entirely on Judah, the Southern kingdom, the priesthood, and how the southern kings supported true worship or did not. When reading through Kings, your best bet is to find overlap in the books of Isaiah and Jeremiah. In Isaiah you will read about preaching and events in the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz, Uzziah, and Hezekiah. In Jeremiah you will read about preaching and events in the time of Josiah, Jehoiakim, and Zedekiah in the time right before the captivity. If you read Ezra 5:1-2 you see that the book of Ezra actually corresponds to the books of Haggai and Zechariah. To read just the Bible story in sequence, read Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Joshua, Judges, 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, Daniel 1-6, Ezra and Nehemiah, then Luke and Acts. Those books alone and in sequence will give you the narrative. The rest fits into the narrative at its appropriate place.

It is great that you are seeking to be in the Word and become personally acquainted with the whole of scripture. If you have read through the story for the first time, often it is best to go back and read it again. Now that you are familiar with it, you will pick up on more details than the first time through. After that, try reading the other gospel accounts to get the full account of Jesus' ministry. From there, it is more important to read whatever book you choose thoroughly and spend time with it than trying to quickly get through every page. Every person will have their own style of reading and study, the more time you spend in God's Word, the more you will find what works best for you. Some people highlight, some write notes, some pray, some journal based on common questions. There is no one way - what we presented here is just a starting suggestion for familiarizing yourself with God's Story.

At the end of Revelations, is condemned anyone that change the words, so my question is, change the chronological order in what the word was inspired by God, is change the word ? Or was God just talking about only Revelations, and thats why church is safe to change the rest ?

  • @Broadwaycoc

The passages in Revelation are referring to direct changes or additions to the words of the Bible as they relate to the meaning and truths presented by the original writers. The order in which the books are bound together to form what we call a modern Bible is not something specifically ordained by God. For many years the books of the Bible were individual scrolls stored in the Synagogue or Christian houses of worship. For example, we could move the order of the bound gospels to Matthew, Mark, John, Luke if we wanted to allow for the books of Luke and Acts to be closer together. However, we can not remove any part of any of these gospels or add passages to these books. Also, passages in Revelation refer to preserving the whole message of God, not just the final revelation given to John.

@@Broadwaycoc Ok so change the order is not change the meaning of the message. As every roll has it’s own message. But don’t you think God would want us to read his entire message in the same chronological order he created it ? Don’t you think ? Who gave authority to those who changed the chronological order, to do so ? And why they did so ?

  • @Broadwaycoc

    @Broadwaycoc

    3 жыл бұрын

Yes, many people have felt that some misunderstandings would be clarified if the Bible was in a closer chronological order, but that hasn't been the case for many, many years. To clarify, each scroll/letter would have its own message, but the overarching themes and focus of God's words can be seen in all his scriptures. Some of your questions are best answered with longer explanations than a simple comment. We would recommend you dig through an older series of Dan's called "How We Got the Bible." He addresses many of these questions and several others related to the creation of the current bound form of the Bible. • @Broadwaycoc

The hesitation is usually related to whether or not to add particular books of the prophets within and around Daniel. Daniel's lifespan covered the time of many events both in Israel/Judah and in the captivity. Also, the discussion around the apocalyptic sections of Daniel can often distract from the narrative/chronological arch we were discussing in this video.

My dilemma is trying to understand what the apostles knew when they were writing the NT. Like Matt 24, did he know what Revelations said? When studying end times events, it’s very important. Obviously Daniel had no knowledge of the Church as was revealed to Paul, so he was writing to “his people”, not to the Church.

  • @Broadwaycoc

The Hebrew cannon of scripture was divided into the three segments typically called: the law, the prophets, and the writings. Sometimes, the third section was called the psalms rather than the writings because that was the header or first book in that final section. The last book in that final section is Chronicles. So, the last book in the Hebrew Bible is Chronicles, but Chronicles and Psalms are both contained in the final section. But, in the passage you mentioned, Jesus is using the word "Psalms" to refer to the final section of the scripture books rather than the final book itself. - Dan Owen

The reason Dan didn't include it in the reading list is because, although there are a few stories, the book of Leviticus is mainly a list of rules and regulations for Israelite life and tabernacle worship. This doesn't mean that it isn't good for reading and understanding, but, like Dan stated, the reading list is intended to help you see the overall story of the Bible as clearly as possible.

Ivo, the Greek word Biblion does mean scroll. Google is not your best source. The Greek Lexicons that study ancient literature for definitions and word usage are more accurate. The form of ancient books was almost always in the scroll form up until after the time of Christ. The term for a book form like ours is Codex. When an ancient manuscript is a codex it is in book form. When it is a Biblion it is in scroll form. The KJV just reflects the 17th century English translators way of communicating to their audience who were familiar with books in codex form. God bless!

He either knows what he's talking about or he doesn't. Is the book of Daniel part of the chronological books of the old testament or not? A little of it maybe? Or, maybe the whole book? I just don't get it. Also, how does he know that is the chronological order of the history in the old testament? He never mentioned from where he knows what he claims to know. Are we supposed to just take his testimony as true? NONSENSE!!! Also, is he really drinking out of a styrofoam cup? DEADLY SIN!!

Lucia, the purpose of this video was to discuss why the Bible isn't completely in chronological order and help those studying the Bible find a basic story outline to build a framework to study the whole bible around. Every book in the Bible has inspired informations but not all of them are narrative. We were highlighting the narrative portions and then encouraging everyone to go back and study once they know the narrative. The order is established by the writing themselves as they point back to events that have happened before and guide us to the ones ahead. None of this is hidden information found from a source other than the Bible itself. Deuteronomy is packed with great teaching but is either retelling or expanded information found in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers; so, it isn't in narrative reading list Dan provides. In the case of Daniel, the book as a whole is a mixture of narrative and apocalyptic writing. If you are reading for the story, the timeline in the book can be confusing if you aren't a careful reader who can see the differences in those sections, but the first half of the book does contain important historical details to understand the time during captivity.
