This is Hijazi Almond Coffee and it's a Hot Drink from the Hijaz Region of Saudi Arabia that is served all year round during special occasions. It's sweet and creamy, but the colour makes it clear, this doesn't contain coffee at all. So why is it called that?

Recipe (makes 4-5 mugs):
1L Whole Milk
60g Rice Flour
75g Blanched Almonds
50g Sugar
To garnish
Flaked Almonds
Ground Cardamom
Ground Cinnamon
1. Boil the almonds 5 minutes then grind to fine pieces (not flour).
2. In a saucepan add the remaining ingredients and whisk continuously on medium heat until the liquid thickens.
3. Serve in your mug of choice and garnish with toasted flaked almonds, ground cardamom and cinnamon (or any topping of your choice).

    "Isn't this just..." Yep its probably similar to lots of hot drinks from around the world. Cultures have been cross-pollinating recipes for millennia. This one looks delicious.

    Also, it's not that difficult to create that, like it's been centuries, it's not rocket science, so lots of people in lots of places have had the same idea so if it tastes good, its sticks around

    If i remember correctly a lot of arabic speaking Andalusians after the Reconquista were expelled to new spain (Mexico) also Cuba and parts of central America so you finding some common dishes is not exactly surprising.

    To those of you who are interested in making this. Do not skip the rice flour, otherwise the ground almond pieces will get caught up in your throat and it will be unpleasant. The rice flour prevent this and make the drink smooth. We have almost the same thing in China. My mom didn't know any better and made this without rice. I was the first victim. Lastly, a splash of almond liqueur will really elevate this.

    I'm glad other viewers know what horchata is also. I like this version with the spices. I bet the cardomom is spot on with these other flavours!

    Looking though the comments there seem to be a lot of places woth a similar dish, and in India too there is one called Badam kheer which is similar

    Reminds me of when my dad ordered “white coffee” at Maroush about 18 years ago, which was not white coffee, but in fact hot water with blossom water added 😂

    @@ayb1470Kinda.. disappointing honestly? the texture seemed about right but the flavor was off and closer to hazelnut coffee creamer than anything. Peanuts worked great though, it was like a hot peanut butter shake. Next time I'll sprinkle chocolate on top.

    @Love90Light Mexico. In Mexico it contains real dairy and is normally cold. The rest of the ingredients are very similar though! The Spanish version is very different tasting but has the same name.

    Yup, because the Mexican version of horchata is derived from a Valencian drink called horchata de chufa and that one has Arabic origins and so on. It's so interesting.

    Maybe it's a regional thing, my country is tiny and I sometimes get shocked how a different part of the country has a dish I never heard of or does a dish in a different way than ours.

    It’s definitely 100% NOT sahlab. Although they look similar but the ingredients, preparation and taste are different to a degree.

    I think any flour or starch that thickens up when heated in liquid, and neutral in flavour, can be used for this recipe. Cassava flour seems like a good alternative to rice flour.
