    Well, it's stupid to deny that people, developers and media sources were overusing the codename, that's how it stuck in the first place. However, it's only a codename, in fact, not a name of the final product. And in 2000's we got a product, that was officially released under PSX name. So, people can use their nostalgic codename, but let's not pretend it is correct.

  • @rars0n

    @@Myafue It absolutely IS correct in the sense that the letters "PSX" were used widely for years to refer to the original Playstation hardware, and that the PS2-based PSX machine sold in very small numbers and in Japan only and is therefore largely irrelevant. I love this revisionist history where because a machine that nobody bought had the letters stamped on it over half a decade of people using "PSX" as an abbreviation is somehow invalidated.

    Adam Baldwin well, here's the problem, the widespread and long-term use of a name, that is incorrect, doesn't make it correct. The level of obscurity of a certain product is irrelevant to the fact of its official existence, it's there and you can't deny it.

  • @rars0n

    @@Myafue Somehow I missed this reply when you originally posted it. I'm not denying the existence of the PSX. I'm simply saying that it's mostly an irrelevant piece of gaming history, and for that reason the term "PSX" is most commonly used to refer to the Playstation, not the PS2-based device. People are not "wrong" for calling the Playstation the PSX, as this was common language well before the PS2 device ever existed. You can try to claim what is "correct" or not, but the fact of the matter is that the term "PSX" exists in the lexicon of an entire generation of gamers as an abbreviation for "Playstation," specifically referring to the original console. Nothing is going to change that. Language is as descriptive as it is prescriptive. People who continue to point out that the PS2-based PSX exists are wasting their time and saying nothing new. We all know about that box. We don't care. We had the term "PSX" long before that, and we're going to keep using it.

    I guess we could call this whole thing a "naming inconvention" since designations were all over the place across many mediums. I personally never used the term PSX to refer to the machine, even if it is technically correct; it still strikes me as silly. Probably not more than Sony releasing a compact version of the hardware later and calling it PSOne, though.

    I could certainly see it as a regional situation too. For the area where I lived, PSX was common place or Playstation. The that mini launched, PSOne was reserved 100% for that. When the PS2 launched, PSX was the original, PSone was the slim, and PS2 was the PS2. Later we called it PS2 Fat and the revised version was PS2 slim.

    I was around for the later Playstation years (before PS2) and it's interesting, I don't ever remember hearing PSX. I only ever remember it being referred to as the Playstation. Maybe it's because I didn't have Internet access at the time, nor had much access to gaming magazines. I doubt that PSX was ever used in official Sony documentation, such as the Playstation manual, or in their own marketing, at least not after the early years. For me, PS1 always referred to the redesign released in 2000. During the PS2 era I used to call the original design the 'first Playstation' or the 'original Playstation'. It wasn't until after the PS3 came out that I started to refer to it also as the PS1, and have done so ever since. If there is an official acronym, it's PS. It was used in the logo since the beginning, and was later used by Sony to refer to Playstation games on the PS3 and PSN. However, PSX was undeniably in widespread use by magazines, publishers and many gamers at the time. There's certainly nothing wrong with using PSX to refer to it. I wouldn't consider it 'wrong' or invalid, it's a perfectly acceptable acronym. The only situation that something else should be used is in a discussion relating to both the Playstation and the PSX DVR (such as playing Playstation games on the PSX DVR), as using PSX for both would be confusing!

    Back in the day I only ever heard of it as the Playstation or PS1, never heard about the PSX until my teenage years when internet was more accessible to me, it doesn't really matter now because people will use PS1/PSX interchangeably (it was worse when the PS2 "PSX" became a thing). I'm pretty sure any magazines I saw in my childhood referred to it only as the PS, but then again, I live in Australia, so maybe PSX didn't catch on and we just called it PS.

    I find it interesting that the PSX code name seemed to be picked as a reference to the MSX standard, developed with Microsoft’s backing; and now all these years later, Microsoft is Sony’s direct rival in the gaming space, seeing as Nintendo have focused on innovation and changing paradigms of what gaming is, rather than the other two’s mantra of “moar powah”.

  • @rars0n
    @rars0n5 жыл бұрын

    I am one of the now minority people who refer to the original Playstation as the PSX, and I often get flack for it. People love to pretend to know otherwise, but in reality, long after launch gaming magazines were still often referring to the original Playstation as the PSX. Then, like you said, when the PSone came out, to many gamers that was considered the "PS1." Hence PSX became a convenient way to differentiate it from the PSone. But it seems that over time, either people have largely forgotten about the PSX moniker or have gotten used to referring to the whole generation of hardware as PS1. It really annoys me when I mention "PSX" and someone tells me "The PSX is an entirely different piece of hardware" as if I didn't already know that. Anyone who calls the original Playstation "PSX" is well aware of the PS2-based DVR machine. It's not an obscure fact of gaming history, it's a machine that sold in very few numbers in Japan. The PSX name was used first, widely, for years, even if unofficially, on the original Playstation hardware. I don't understand the pedantry that is going on over the letters PSX. Literally no one uses it to mean the PS2-based DVR machine except to obnoxiously point out how "wrong" it is to call the original Playstation a PSX. We're all aware of the machines, we're aware of what we're talking about, and we're going to continue to call it the PSX because that's what we called it since forever.

The PSX was so ingrained to the original Playstation design that people often used it to differentiate between it and the PSone. That is, "PSX" was SPECIFICALLY NOT referring to the PSone. The conclusion is actually that the PSX has nothing to do with the PlayStation except for being a prototype/code name since it wasn't released as PSX or PS-X or PlayStation X. PS One is a much better shorter name for the original PlayStation since it's the official shortened name for the console. Yea the PS One had a visual redesign but that has nothing to do with it because it's made to indicate that it is the original PlayStation and not the PS2 Playstation 2. The PS One console played PlayStation games, so it's not a separate system but only a shortened rebranded name to separate it from the PS2. You don't call PS2 games PSX2 games or PS5 games PSX5 games. Calling PlayStation games PSX games is the same as if you would call Xbox Series X console Project Scarlett. I'm repeating it for the third time but the PS One name wasn't created to name the slim version of PlayStation console but to stylize and shorten the PlayStation console name to PS One because of the PlayStation 2 was also shortened to PS2 already at launch and to separate the two, so customers would know to call the PlayStation a PS One and the PlayStation 2 a PS2. So it should be called PlayStation or if shortened, PS One.

But before ps2 came out, it was never referred to as a ps1 because why would you when it was the only one? It's like how we call the original xbox the "og xbox" but back when only the original xbox was out, no one would add an "og" moniker for obvious reason. (and jenovi is right about how dumb they named the newest console xbox1 negating the use of xbox 1 as reference to the original just like how the ps1 is now being used which would make the most sense in terms of canonical numbering system). Tl;dr You can call it the Ps1 or PSX. Both are right. I think the purpose of the video is to simultaneously shut up and to show how dumb all those "hurr durr it's ps1 NOT Psx" kids are.

    Sony's own self glorifying autobiography "Revolutionaries at Sony" by Reiji Asakura only mentions "PS/X" once in the whole book, that is in reference to the internal code name for the SNES CD-ROM as the inspiration for the name PlayStation. The term is never used again, PlayStation is the name of the original console. PSone is the slim unit and PS1 is a simple identifier after the PS2 was released. PSX is nothing but a catchy logo magazines caught on to during the pre-release hype phase and they never let it go after Sony revealed the actual brand. You had might as well be calling the Saturn the 'Gigadrive' or the N64 the Ultra 64, all three would be just as incorrect as using the term PSX for the original PlayStation. Also, there is no reason to use "PSX" when speaking of the system, the abbreviation only works potentially in writing. It is the same number of syllables to say PlayStation as P-S-X. Using the system's actual name is much less confusing or cumbersome.

    Nope. As the video stated, PS1 was used to refer to the smaller white variant ("psone"), and in the media, magazines etc "Playstation" had been used to refer to the much hyped Nintendo system, widely advertised as their answer to the Mega CD. Sony's machine was referred to exclusively before launch as PSX or "Playstation X", and many major retailers in the UK including Dixons, Currys and Comet spent a lot of time and money hyping it up, so once it was released, continued to use the name as they had created hype and brand awareness. As others have pointed out, retailers put "PSX" on shop shelf and price stickers, multiformat magazines including market leaders CVG & Gamesmaster used PSX, and there were even several, dedicated PlayStation magazines with PSX in the title. Also as the video states, there was a lot of concern in the UK that "Play Station" sounded like something for kids, which was the polar opposite of how Sony Europe wanted to market the system, so although unofficially, they never requested that retailers or magazines stopped using the term PSX, as in the 90s, it certainly sounded cooler and fitted the marketing strategy better. People used the name PSX very widely from around 94 to 98/9 so almost 5 years before the PS2 started being hyped and therefore created a reason to call it the PS1, which Sony then killed by releasing the mini console. Calling the DVR system released around 2001 the PSX is what caused confusion, but by that time the industry had already been calling the original Playstation PSX for 7+ years. I can only speak to my experience in the UK but industry veterans, journalists, retailers and games developers all refer to the original Playstation as PSX to this day, and people who say PS1 sound like younger people who weren't there at the time. If course, everyone is aware of the DVR system called PSX but as is wasn't a dedicated platform and just played PS2 games, and it barely took off due to a ridiculous pricepoint, it is not considered a true standalone system & is rarely ever required to be referred to in conversation other than as an odity with a stupid name.
