As an enthusiast of retro gaming, I really enjoy these historical pieces. Your treatment of the subject is great and the production is top notch. The advertising was a big part of video gaming culture back in those days and seeing the old ads and hearing the story again so well presented really appeals to my love of retro gaming nostalgia. Good show! - looking forward to further installments.

It is pretty clear in the 90s for the price point Sega offered the better system in terms of hardware and its compatibility with modern trends in gaming even several years after it was launched. Which is probably why the Genesis held up so well as most cartridges were just roms

Very good video. Finally people are starting to state the important details about the Genesis' specs. A lot of people just use this sheet with sprite sizes and screen resolutions and so on, and compare that. Unfortunately, doing that is very misleading because that's basically only on paper specs, and each of the SNES' features has some sort of limitation to it. For example, you could only reach 128 sprites on screen on SNES if sprite sizes are 8x8, and if each sprite were the same one being reused, whereas on Genesis, it can always reach its limit of 80 sprites and it can even use unique sprites, not having to always be the same one. To use 512x448 mode on SNES, it requires much processing power, and can only display 16 colors total on screen in that mode, and furthermore, it only affects backgrounds, so sprites are stretched to compensate. On Genesis, it goes to 320x448, but even though it isn't quite as big horizontally, it's still able to display the normal 64 colors (or more with shadow/highlight mode) onscreen, and the hit to performance isn't nearly as bad as on SNES. To know exactly how capable each system is, you have to go into the deeper details like this, and fortunately, there are accurate comparisons of the two readily available.

Hey man. Neat video. I particularly appreciate the side by side comparison of CPU, data bus, & what nots. But the video capabilities of the Genesis is ... murky. Especially when comparing to the Super NES. The SNES was created with Audio & Video in mind. (In particular, something that made the Genesis look & sound ancient.) So right out of the box, the SNES GPU & APU had more bells & whistles going for them; but the slow CPU & data bus meant even launch titles like Pilotwing & Super Mario Kart needed an on-cart-co-processor (the DSP-1) to run things smoothly. By comparison, the Genesis GPU didn't have as many features. (And some of the features it DID have, like blending modes weren't very well known.) But the faster CPU & data access meant things like scaling & rotation could be calculated & "rendered" via software and sent off to the GPU to be shown on screen. As to how far the CPU rendered 3D can be pushed, there's a homebrew port of Wolfenstein 3D that runs on a stock Genesis. (Hell, there's a homebrew demo of Starfox. It's not a full game, and it couldn't run a full game, but still.) Mind you, both of the consoles relied heavily on DMA & HDMA. DMA basically meant chunks of data would be copied from the system RAM to video RAM in between the time when frames were being drawn on the TV screen. HDMA (Horizontal-interrupt/blank DMA) copied data to video RAM, or modified registers, between the time when individual lines were being drawn on the TV screen. I know this video is old and all, but if anyone was wondering why the SNES has a CPU processor like that is because originally, the Super Nintendo was going to be backwards compatible NES games. If I'm not mistaken, you would need some sort of peripheral to put on top of the SNES just like the Genesis/Mega Drive to play Master system games. The only issue with that was that it would've increased the price of the SNES by quite alot and Nintendo is known for not wanting to sell expensive hardware; especially at a loss like Sega and others had a habit of doing. And by the time Nintendo realized it, it was too late to incorporate a faster CPU processor(I mean they could've, that only would've meant delaying the system for another year and they would've lost a ton of market share by that point). So in Nintendo's case it was like this; either A) delay the system for another year to incorporate a powerful CPU, only to lose market dominance and influence. Or B) release the system as it is and work with what you have, doing the best you can working with and around the limitations. Obviously the ladder was chosen in this case. Probably for the best.

Well, the Genesis is actually more powerful than the SNES. The mega drive has more data processing, the superscaler engine can scale everything, rather the SNES' mode 7 that just can scale backgrounds. The Mega Dive also it has the capability to render the same number of 3d polygons as the SNES with the help of the Super FX. Even because the Motorola 68000 CPU, the Genesis is an 16 bit and 32 bit hybrid system, like the master system was an 8 bit an 16 bit hybrid; the SNES in the other hand it's more 16 bit. I hope this helps you and clarifies some things

There's something I disagree about the argument that the Mega Drive can also do scaling, strechting, etc... It's technically true, but it needs to sacrifice a lot of CPU power to do that, hence why the effect was not used in a lot of games. A lot of these special effects on the Mega Drive are kept for special stages or even cutscenes for a reason I still think Nintendo should have used a better CPU, but, overall, the special effects it has it can use it better than the Mega Drive and, more importantly, it doesn't take resources away from the CPU. The perspective effect used in games like F-Zero (which has no special chips inside), and Pilotwings and Super Mario Kart (which both have DSP chips) uses the CPU together with horizontal interrupts, because it isn't something the hardware was designed to do, so it's in fact a CPU-driven effect added to a capability of the graphical chip. Which is to say, the SNES obviously can do some cool effects by clever programming Both systems have special effects in many games, but the Mega Drive tends to do better with the effects the Super Nintendo doesn't have natively. I notice this especially in Traveller Tales game which have vastly inferior versions on the SNES. In the Game Hut channel here in KZread, TT's programmer talks about the old tricks he used to make the Mega Drive do awesome stuff it normally can't, but it's usually only used for a single moment Toy Story is a great example: the Mega Drive can show more than 64 colors, but it has to setup everything just right to make it work, thus, it isn't used for gameplay. It can play Amiga mod files completely driven by the CPU, but it's only used for the intro screen. Whereas the SNES can have more colors on screen and play samples in most situations without having to sacrifice any CPU power

So, just to be clear, when Sega advertised "Mega" carts, they're talking about megabytes, right? Because a 1 mb cartridge would be nothing. It's just weird because standard back then was to report cart sizes in megabits. Also, easy conversion from kilo/mega/giga/whatever bits to bytes, just divide by 8.

18:35 The Genesis channel 6 in pcm mode can only output up to 8bit 33Khz samples (on par with the snes) however, that stuff about a better signal to noise ratio seems suspect and if you take the time to check, SNES has only 64KB audio ram and as such 33Khz is unlikely ever achieved and it's worth noting SNES samples are only 4bits (expanded to 15bit using adpcm codec with uses 4 point gaussian interpolation).. The Genesis FM outputs at 56Khz.

Thank you for bringing out arguments I've made for a long time! If you compare the actual consoles, the Genesis was capable of much better graphics than the SNES. A lot of people just don't realize it because the SNES games used extra chips to do things that the console itself wasn't capable of! Red zone on Genesis, which you had brief footage of, did things that could have never been done on a SNES, and did it with no extra chips. They both had great games, but in terms of graphics, the Genesis won hands down

The bit comparing the specs is a bit... misleading. Sound quality is dependent on far, far more than just sampling rate, for instance. The CPU being higher clocked also isn't as much of an advantage as it seems because the IPC was in many workloads was lower. Keyword being many, not all. In addition, it can't increase its color palette. There are tricks to use more colors at a time out of the palette, but the SNES had similar tricks(FF6 uses them, for instance). IIRC, Sonic 1+2+3 use one or two. Sega CD made it a bit easier to do that, incidentally. Here's some more information: www.sega-16.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-26085.html

  • @RazorEdge2006

    @RazorEdge2006

    6 жыл бұрын

Saying "better" sound quality is indeed misleading. It would've been more accurate to say "sharper" sound quality, which is what you get from a higher sampling rate. Both the SNES and Mega Drive had their advantages and disadvantages when it came to sound capabilities. Sega's 68000 CPU was undoubtedly faster than Nintendo's Ricoh CPU. But it wasn't because of the clock rate, since the Ricoh could do more instructions per clock. The 68000's faster speed came from other advantages. For example, it has 32-bit internal data bus and 16-bit external data bus, whereas the Ricoh has 16-bit internal data bus and 8-bit external data bus, giving the 68000 a higher bandwidth. The 68000 also had more ALUs, allowing it to perform faster arithmetic calculations. It was advantages like these that made the 68000 faster, not necessarily the clock rate. The Sega Mega Drive has a shadow/highlight mode that can triple its colour palette. But even with shadow/highlight and other tricks, the SNES still has a clear advantage over the Mega Drive when it comes to colour capabilities.

I without a doubt have a preference for Sega, but I love most of the systems released and feel very few don't bring something positive to the table.

Like the vid but it is quite Sega centric. While both system were phenomenal they each had there draw back and strengths. Oh why is it a draw back that SNES used add on chips, it seems like a good idea to me. Maybe am missing something since i came to video games later in life, mostly do to economics. I started with PS3 Wii and X360 and worked my way back. I now own all major home console realizes from 8 bit era to day. But due to this reason i don't understand all the bias so many have one way or the other

Thanks for checking this out. Be forewarned, this video is part of an ongoing series that looks at history from a very Sega centric perspective. It's mainly due to most Nintendo stories being beat to death while a number of Sega stories remain untold. For my part, I love all these systems and really only have a distaste for the V-smile, Casio Loopy and like consoles. Back to the question. Using the onboard chips isn't really an issue, Sega even has one game (Virtua Racing) that did this. The point more or less is about the hardware capabilities and how marketing was used to twist reality. Anyways, I would never give up my SNES and believe both systems to be Must own consoles for any game enthusiast.I actually grew up owning the Genesis and my brother owned the SNES, Both got played a lot. If you continue on in the Series, you'll find there really isn't much discussion beyond this video comparing Nintendo to Sega outside of some sales figures. Thanks for the comment -Jenovi

It was a drawback because SNES cartridges were a lot more expensive back then. Super FX based cartridge usually were retailing between $60 to $70 in 1993 dollars..... Which adjusting for inflation in today's dollars would be a retail price of about $120. There were no Genesis games that retailed for more than $50 at the time (the one exception being the Genesis version of Virtua Racing).

Despite Sega Genesis being slightly older (Japanese release of Sega Mega Drive was in the end of 1988, while Japanese release of Nintendo Super Famicom was in the end of 1990), both systems were mostly on par with each other. But it still were times when different computers and consoles had drastic differences from each other. For example, Sega Genesis's processor architecture made its programming much easier, back then games were often programmed using assembly languages so this parameter was very important. Even modern enthusiasts that are trying to push old hardware to its limits had much, much more impressive results with Sega Genesis than with Super Nintendo, because programming weird stuff on SNES is harder

The super Nintendo`s sound chip is way better then the Genesis sound chip. Comparing sampling rate is not an indication of Sega Genesis having a superior sound chip. The SNES had more sound channels and far higher MHZ count then the Sega Genesis Sound Chip. The SNES sound chip was also in some ways better then the Neo Geo AES sound chip. And i own the SNES, Genesis and the Neo Geo Aes. While thee Genesis had faster Ram, faster CPU and faster DMA transfer rates which allowed the Genesis to replicate some of the effects that SNES can do in Software, But the fact that the SNES can do those effects in hardware free`s up the CPU, ram and DMA to do other task. The SNES and Genesis had certain advantages over each other. The SNES had the advantage in colors, Transparencies and sound. The Genesis had the advantage in faster games, smoother frame rates and far less slow down when theirs numerous characters on screen. Neither console was more powerful then the other in every category.

Not true about the sound chips. The Sega Mega Drive has more audio channels and its sound chips have higher clock rates: -The Mega Drive has 10 sound channels, from 2 sound chips (6 on the Yamaha YM2612, and 4 on the PSG). Whereas the SNES has 8 channels, from a single sound chip. -The Mega Drive's YM2612 is clocked at 7.7 MHz and its PSG is clocked at 3.6 MHz . Whereas the SNES sound chip is clocked at 3 MHz. You may be confusing the sound chip's clock rate with the system's master clock rate, which is higher on the Mega Drive (53 MHz) than the SNES (24 MHz). The SNES sound chip does have other advantages over the Mega Drive's sound chips. But the Mega Drive has more sound channels and higher clock rates. As for the Neo Geo, its sound chip is superior to both the SNES and Mega Drive sound chips in virtually every way.

Interesting thing to note about the Neo Geo, its soundchip actually isn't as amazing as many might assume. By far the biggest advantage the Neo Geo had was not being limited in cartridge size, and that advantage helps tremendously with sound as well. On the Neo Geo, you get 4 FM channels which are basically identical to the Genesis' FM channels. You also get 3 PSG + 1 noise channel, comparable (but not identical) to the PSG capabilities of the Genesis. You then get 7 ADPCM channels, which ara able to play samples somewhat like the SNES. Here's the catch about the ADPCM channels though: 6 of them are locked to 18.5khz. The reason for this is those 6 channels are derived from the YM2608's Rhythm Sound Source, which was used for playing ROM drum sounds. That means that, while you could play any sample of whatever you want, it's completely impossible to change the pitch of that sample, and thus those 6 channels are almost entirely useless for tonal parts. But that's where the Neo Geo's massive cartridges come in! If you have several samples, one for each different pitch of each instrument, then you can fake having different pitches of the same instrument, at the expense of lots of extra ROM space. This would have been a massive, crippling limitation on a home console like the Genesis or SNES, but on the Neo Geo it works because they didn't have to be concerned about cartridge size. Even then, those 6 channels are pretty limited compared to what the SNES can do with samples, as they're still locked to an 18.5khz output rate, which is nearly half what the SNES can push. The panning is also limited to hard left, hard right, or center, which is far less flexible than the SNES' smooth panning capabilities (and this applies to the 7th ADPCM channel as well).

Sound is completely subjective. I'd rather listen to the Yamaha YM2612 in games like Streets of Rage versus the muffled, compressed samples of most of the Super Nintendo library. With a great composer like Hiroshi Kawaguchi on a game, I think the Genesis usually offered better music. It was shovelware from developers like Accolade is why the Genesis has a mixed reputation for music.

@@pferreira1983 The SNES sound is not only better then the Sega Genesis sound in my opinion, but its also better then the Neo Geo sound chip which has a more powerful version of the Yamaha sound board found in the Genesis. I was playing my modded Neo Geo AES one time which was modded to use component cables, then i turned on my Super Nes which used S-video cables which gives inferior sound and picture quality then Component, but yet the SNES sound still sounded better. I own the Turbo Graf-x, Genesis, SNES and Neo. But the Genesis has the worst sound quality of them all; while the SNES have the best sound quality of them all in my opinion. Any crap quality techno sound you hear on the SNES has to do with the developer lack of skill at utilizing the SNES sound chip properly. Just like the Genesis is not known for having all that great orchestral sounds, but its capable of having that if the sound chip is handled by the right hands. Or if your playing or viewing the SNES game that`s using a emulator, its possible that the emulator is not emulating the sound properly.

@@PPHDocumentaries The Yamaha YM2610 (Neo Geo chip) predates the YM2612 (Mega Drive chip). The YM2612 is a cheaper cut-down version of the YM2610. The YM2610 is technically superior to the Sony SPC700 (SNES chip) in virtually every way. While the SPC has 8 PCM channels, the YM2610 has 14 channels, including 4 FM channels, 7 PCM channels and 3 SSG channels. The Neo Geo can also access much more sound memory, so its PCM samples aren't so compressed on the Neo Geo, whereas the SNES has heavily compressed PCM samples resulting in its distinctive muffled sound. Just compare any Neo Geo game to its SNES conversion, and the difference is like night and day. The SNES versions always sound downgraded compared to the Neo Geo originals.

leave a positive or negative comment and my thoughts? ok. already enjoyed this video when you first posted it but after now watching it again i realized thanks for not saying "ReTrO" throughout the documentary. my hell, you cant find a damn thing you enjoy, especially VideoGames, without that stupid unnecessary word attached to it. hey look, i use a toaster for my bread and shit in a flushing toilet, so rEtRo. hey look, i wear a ReTrO hat, tie my shoe with ReTrO laces and use a rEtrO gass powered lawnmower. ffs. how about hey look the console STILL reads Genesis on top since the day i bought it and the box of the game STILL reads Elemental Master since i've been playing it. i dont see the f**kin word "retro" magically appearing. its the same awesome game & console and will be the same tomorrow. people of the internet, in the name of all that is holy please stop with the tacking on some unnecessary stupid trendy word to whatever it is people have always enjoyed. its i play frisbee as the park and like to play chess, NOT i play rEtRo chess and ReTrO frisbee. ffs, knock it off, its just called VideoGames.
