Give them a choice between jail and mandatory rehab if they're on drugs. Some are young kids trained to steal by parents . Test them to make sure they're taking their methadone when they are paroled. Let them keep some of their wages so they get used to earning their pay.

@@hxp417 i'm talking about inpatient rehab you can't leave during the sentence.Jails aren't set up for drug rehab. It's better than nothing because at least they detox, but what's the point of that if they start getting high again as soon as they're released? A lot of them are stealing to support a drug habit that they got into because they wanted to forget trauma, such as being abused as kids. If they can get some psych help, have some kind of mandatory job while in the rehab, get put on Methadone and monitored when they get out, you'll have less recidivism.

What's needed are a NO SELF SERVICE line of Dollar Stores which have armored street level windows (and airlock style merch doors) with no items picked by staff until the order is paid for. If the items picked are not retrieved in time, charge a restocking fee. No shopping carts needed or anything else but appropriate bulletproof frontage.

In the Mid 20s (go go era) it exploded into thousands of stores across the COUNTRY. So much for Modernism. Altho Amazon may have the solution. Enter thier stores, pick up what you want...no cash register, thousands of sensors record What you pick up and keep . . . . But you had to Surrender your Identity to enter the store and limited the exit to one customer at a Time. You pay from your bank Accounts or you never get into the store 🏪. Saw one in Washington DC.

It's not just a problem in Portland, it's everywhere. The place I work, we can't do anything. We're literally instructed by corporate to "be good witnesses", and report the incident afterwards. We can't stop shoplifters, record with our phones, or address them in any way that might be construed as accusatory. Can't follow them outside, can't even call out after them to stop. For years incidents have been reported to corporate, and nothing has happened. We've been told we might be able to qualify for door cameras, if it gets bad enough. Used to have shopping totes for customers to use, but shoplifters would fill them up and walk out. Not run out, walk out. Management has since removed those totes from the sales floor, but shoplifters now come in with those totes they used previously to load up again and walk out. Can't call the police "unless we're absolutely sure", and even if we did, shoplifters are either gone by the time the cops show up, or there wont be much in the way of prosecution. More and more stores will begin closing. Harder to shoplift from a website and it has a higher profit margin because of lower operational costs. Downside is as retail stores close, the crime wont disappear, it'll just shift over to domestic crimes like home invasions and car break-ins.

If you can't operate safely and make a profit, then you close the operation. You can't expect a company to operate at a loss. You need police and you need judges that can carry out the protection that is needed to be safe in the cities and state. It's up to you the citizen to use your vote to get reps in office that understand what it takes to get the job done.

Debs husband asks whatever happened to THE SUMMER OF LOVE??? Out of control crime, businesses closing, people leaving. Maybe they weren't getting their SUMMER OF LOVE HUG AND THEIR FEELINGS WERE HURT!!!😂😂😂😂😂

Voters can turn this around in one election. Elect people to local and state positions who are serious about law and order.

Since we are re-living the Wild West days again, we need to bring back the laws they used to stop horse theives & gunslinger's! Stealing a car is the same as stealing some one's horse back then & the only way they could stop it was by using an, "Instant Death Sentence." Same for using a gun in a crime, "Instant Death Sentence." If a store owner catches someone stealing from their store, they should have the right to remove one of their hands.
