Why Is It Impossible To Get Doctor Doom Right?

Ойын-сауық

Doctor Doom has been a mainstay in the Marvel canon for decades. He is one of the best villains ever put to the page, and has had several attempts at adapting him to the big screen. Though it has turned out adapting Doctor Doom to a feature film is a lot harder than expected. Will we get to see a new Doctor Doom before Marvel Studios releases it's Fantastic Four movie?

My friends and I have said almost this exact same thing. One of the best parts of Doom's character is that he's not explicitly good or evil. He's motivated purely by self interest. Most of the time that means committing evil acts, but it also means he sometimes works with the heroes if he sees that as the best avenue to get what he wants or protect what he has.

@@alanhervert2702 SUCH a great moment, and just helps highlight that there is almost no point Doom won't go to screw over Reed. It's like how Doom is tested by the Celestial in the latest comics to say that Reed Richards is smarter than him and Doom (knowing the fate of Earth is at stake) laughs at the Celestial, walks away, says that passes, and the Celestial agrees with him. Give me THAT Doom MCU.

Another thing that is completely abandoned when people try to adapt Doctor Doom, he is trying to save the world. He is the world's hero in his own mind. He saw many futures, and every one that he was not ruling the world had humanity wiped out while the one he saw with him ruling had humanity survive. To him, becoming the ruler of the world is a necessity in order to save humanity, and those that oppose him are literally working to doom the future of humanity. This is why he is so comfortable doing so many evil things, because he views it as a necessary evil.

Doom refers to himself in the third person, that's the level of ego we're dealing with. The technical genius of Stark, the arcane talents of Strange, and the political swag of T'challa combined in one person. Yet it drives him crazy to see an absent-minded professor who easily discovers new dimensions and invent physics defying spacecraft in his penthouse suite get all the glory. As Doom himself would say, "Nations shall burn for this insult!"

What you're saying is that Doom is essentially a smart version of Donald Trump. Which holds up because Doom's schemes tend to fall apart because of hubris, his inability to conceive of the notion that he may be wrong or that other people may be better than him. It'd certainly one way to make the character uniquely relevant for this day and age.

His all-consuming quest for power is unrivaled in comics. The more he achieves, the more he wants, and he usually taps into such further knowledge rather easily in his ascension. Every other villain either has misguided intentions of nobility (Thanos) or is complacent with their superiority (Kang, Red Skull, Magneto), but those are never enough for Doom. He is like Internet Rule 34, but only he can be the sole supplier of said porn. He is the veritable epitome of "well that escalated". To commit to using him in a story is to relent to an evil that gets worse and never ends, which is antithetical to Disneyfilm's quest to understand and redeem everyone in eyeshot.

I remember once reading a thing about how battles with Doom can go one of three ways. 1: If he's fighting against heroes, he loses, but in such a way that furthers his goals and either teaches the heroes a lesson or leaves them feeling hollow. 2: If he's fighting another villain, he wins, hands down. That's Doom's whole thing. 3: If he's fighting Squirrel Girl, he gets his ass beat, no two ways about it.

@@uzii6540 Technically yes. You can introduce anyone as a background character with no need for backstory. But that won't tell you much about that character other than that he exists. Dr Stange needed a whole film to explain who he is and how he got the job of Sorcerer Supreme, and what that job even is. Dr Doom is a more complex character. Like Strange, he started out as an accomplished surgeon. (I say "started out", but nobody is born a surgeon; the TV series _Scrubs_ showed how that is a journey in itself.) Like Strange, he began dabbling with magic, but for completely different reasons and in different ways. That by itself is a whole story in itself, and that's still far from the iconic Dr Doom. He also went into politics, becoming a successful and popular head of state (or planet, depending on continuity; in the comics it has always been a planet, and Doom is basically their actual, living, reigning Jesus). And that still ignores the one thing casual readers or watchers of the animated shows are most aware of: Dr Richards hatred for him. (Although Richards has more to worry about with Namor, Galactus, the Krull, and the Living Tribunal. Or even just fellow inventor Tony Stark, whom Dr Pym doesn't even take seriously. (Everyone always seems to forget that Professor Dr Banner is actually the smartest and most accomplished of the lot, apart from Dr Doom, ignoring how Spiderman's physics professor saved the universe 616 from the Quantum Mechanic that one time because nobody else would have been able to even understand the threat.)) I mean you could just drop the fully fleshed character in there and develop the backstory in flashbacks and references. It worked for Thanos, but Thanos is a rather inconsequential character by comparison, and his MCU version was still just a fraction of what had been established in the comics. (For example, his rivalry with Deadpool for the attention of Lady Death was missing entirely.)

It's not impossible, just very unlikely. Victor Von Doom is a multi dimensional character, fleshed out over decades in the comics. He's not just a one trick pony who's easily portrayed in a movie. He's not a shallow villain but a complex man with grand aspirations and even grander abilities. He's the hero of HIS story, ruler of his country and even loved by his people. In short, he deserves his OWN movie.

I think part of the challenge in trying to adapt Doom to the big screen is in giving him everything that Doom is as a character, but doing so in a way that doesn't feel like a rip-off of the movie villain Doom most closely resembles: Darth Vader. Larger than life, scarred and encased in an armored prison being a Death's Head metal faceplate, cloaked in darkness, master of both magic and science, a merciless dread overlord... Doom and Vader are nearly twins. And until someone can figure out how to solve this conundrum, they will fail to write Doom properly...

All three movie versions of Doom were terrible, sadly, and didn't move the needle at all in terms of cultural effect. The issue with Dr Doom in film is that he always plays the antagonist in the Fantstic 4's origin story, and as such his own origin story gets glossed over. I think origin stories have been done to death in superhero cinema but movies like Joker or Venom show that people still warmly receive an origin story if it has a unique spin on it. So I think for Doom's introduction into the MCU they should flip the script. Instead of making him the antagonist in a Fantastic 4 movie, make the Fantastic 4 the antagonists to a fully fleshed-out Doom origin movie.

Dr. Doom is the embodiment of the Nietzschean ideal of Will To Power and the definition of Indominable. In many ways he's ironically the greatest super hero in terms of his traits. My personal favorite example is the original Secret Wars when he's being literally torn apart by the Beyonder after being completely defeated, no armor, and totally naked, but he still won't give up, and because he refused to accept defeat, even in such a destroyed state, he finds a way to win! That is Dr. Doom. That's like Tony Stark beating Thanos with all the Infinity Stones with none of his technology or friends to help. Dr. Doom can accomplish the impossible. The problem is his ego and madness of knowing 100 percent for a fact that his mother IS burning in Hell. He's motivated by love and wanting to save his mother that he goes to extreme degrees and doesn't care about the consequences of his actions. The means serve the ends. The Fantastic 4 basically hold a mirror up to Dr. Doom and makes him realize, despite what he may otherwise believe, that his worst scars aren't on his body but in his soul and heart and he hates knowing some part of him is weak. He can wear armor to protect his body. He can use his mind to outsmart people. He can use magic to go toe-to-toe with people like Dr. Strange. However nothing can protect him from the hole in his heart and all the power and self-aggrandizement is an addiction to try to fill that hole. He hates being reminded of that. The tragedy of Dr. Doom is if not for that one weakness that perverts all he tries to do he would be the greatest super hero of all time. But, you know, I guess making him a giant doofus and using an actor teenage girls and middle aged wine aunts have on their bedroom walls or office cubicles works too!

One of the main issues in movie, is that it suffers from Sam Raimi's Spider-man-villainitis: the nemesis has to be deeply intrinsic to the heroes origin so as to be a dark reflection... That does exist in the comics and can be great, but the thing with Doom, is that he is not defined by his relation-ship to the Fantastic Four, he is so much more than that. Villains can exist without the need of being defined by their relationship with a hero, they can be full-fletched persons with complex motivations that changes day-to-day, as it does for any of human being. Defining people only by their relationship to us (or the heroes in this case) reduces people and characters to very simple imitation, when they can be so much more, once you realize their internal complexities

Not even Lee and Kirby were able to introduce a fully formed Victor Von Doom in his first appearance. I think that one way to do this is to have a Disney+ series (or possibly a standalone film) titled "Victor" that explores his childhood, schooling, and rise to power in Latveria. Once that is established, he could then appear in FF 2 (allowing the first film time to introduce them) or Secret Wars as Reed's nemesis. They can't rush the characters into a film that has a host of other agendas. Thanks for the video.

I feel like we need to start seeing Doom in more of the content.. because of his complexity and the fact that he will be a major villain, he needs screen time in all possible ways. The build up to Thanos worked so well because we had hints at him since Avengers. Years later we see Thanos and how powerful he was. Doom needs this same treatment in a way. I feel if he is just in Fantastic 4 and then all of a sudden he overpowers Kang and takes over, it will feel so rushed and random. We need time to appreciate Doom in the various cinematic aspects. Put him in TV shows, make him a character pulling strings. Mention his name, name drops work too. Have him be the character with cameos in multiple things... I am so excited for what's to come, I just don't want to see it rushed through and they make Doom become ruler because everyone expects it. I want to see his build up, see the payoff after having him in the background. That is a trait of Doom, he is a schemer as well as being powerful. He is always thinking at the bigger picture, always planning for the next 5 steps.

If I were in charge, I'd go for a two-pronged approach: give Doom a movie where he has to devise a way out of a maze (outside of time?) Kang trapped him in with some light hints at his genius level intellect and affinity for sorcery; by the end of the film he manages to break free. Then (or concurrently to the movie) release a limited Disney+ series titled "Latveria" depicting everyday life in the country. Each episode is told from the POV of another citizen to flesh out the somewhat complicated relationship between Doom and his people. Show how Latveria thrived under Victor while it has fallen into disrepair and squalor when he suddenly vanished. End the show with Doom's triumphant return, maybe with the added bonus of a brief confrontation wherein he obliterates the warmonger/dictator who tried to fill the power vacuum. In future appearances, I'd pair him up with Strange (either in his own sequel or Dr Strange 3) asking Stephen for help to retrieve his mother's soul from hell; have him almost destroy Wakanda in BP3, seemingly team up with the FF in their sequel and threequel but gradually work towards several pieces of his own puzzle to fall into place so he can usurp either The Beyonders' or even Galactus' power and reign supreme. In a nutshell, go the opposite route to Thanos' sparing teases and brief cameos and deliver a rich and profound canvas of Doom's complexity so we as viewers get to learn all the intricacies that make him uniquely compelling.

As an eternal Doom stan, having a different backstory for Doom could work. But in making that backstory, you have to take into account how the events will shape him as a person. Backstories are explanations for a character’s actions, not a way to excuse them. In my opinion, Victor doesn’t hate Reed because he has a better reputation. In the comics, Reed pointed out a flaw in the machine that gave Victor his scar, and Victor ignored him because he thought Reed wanted to upstage him. Victor truly believes that he is the hero of this story. And you don’t tell a hero they’re wrong unless you’re a villain. If you’re not trying to be a part of Victor’s solution, then you’re part of the problem. And we all know that Victor von Doom is *very* keen on fixing problems.

Me and my buddy had discussed Dr. doom very recently. We always talk about what we would do with him. Here’s what we have come up with. Dr. Doom should go down as the greatest MCU villain ever. Because that’s what he has the potential to be. Give me a force of nature that is never satisfied with anything and he has one goal. Power for his people. We think he’s gonna show up in Wakanda forever, it makes the most sense. In the source material he is known for orchestrating a war between the Atlanteans and Wakanda. Seeing him pull the strings would be excellent as it shows his skills in manipulation. Which lets the audience know what is true power is, his intelligence. His true power doesn’t come from his magic or technology, but his mind. He is an excellent politician and an excellent speaker, when he says something you believe it. He has a conviction about him that is unmatched. We also think it would be cool if we saw the sorcery side of Doom, I feel like the general audience/ population believe he’s a knock off Iron Man when really he has powers at rival that of Doctor Strange and “The Ancient One”. He’s a sorcerer, it’s a big part of his character and what makes him so powerful. We also thought it would be cool if you he went around collecting some “artifacts” and cool objects from previous marvel films. Have his armor be made out of remains of the infinity gauntlet with the magic from the infinity stones. Give him some Vibranium to mix it with that. His armor should be a major power source of not only incredible technology but incredible magic. Two fields he dominates in. Power shouldn’t be his only obsession though, he should be a man who understands that power comes from knowledge. I want to see this may be a scholar, a scientist, a man who understands the world on all fronts, and the worlds beyond our own. I want to see him reading Asgard texts and books from libraries in Ta Lo and Wakanda. He should be a multi-phase villain because he can be. But above all else, he must be WRITTEN WELL! He has to be a compelling character. The people who wrote the backstory‘s for characters like Killmonger, Xu Wenwu, Thanos. Those are the people I want behind Dr. Doom. I think Dr. Doom has the potential to go down as one of the greatest movie antagonist of all time. The potential is limitless and they have an opportunity here. If Marvel gets this right, it will immortalize the character and the studio forever.

I've said this before: Produce a comics-accurate film devoted solely to Doom's origin -- a film devoted entirely to a villain as its protagonist. Early on, show his rivalry with college classmate Reed, and how he got himself expelled. (It's important to show how deep his contempt for Richards is.) Show his journey to Asia (with flashbacks to his early years in eastern Europe), and how he not only learns sorcery and various other disciplines there, but how he combines these together with technology. Show the creation of the armor and how self-destructively impatient he is to don the mask, even though it's still steaming hot from the forging process. Then have him return to Latveria, conquer it, and establish himself as its absolute ruler. Having achieved this goal, have a scene at the end where he's surrounded by numerous screens monitoring world events, perhaps including his rise to power in Latveria. Then, the events shown on one particular monitor catches his attention. On the screen, four people with fantastic powers are fighting a giant subterranean monster that has just burrowed up through a city street. His eyes go wide, then begin to burn with rage as he recognizes the bizarre stretching man. He smashes the screen with his armor fist, his fury knowing no end. Cue the FF movie.

imo it's a mistake to connect doom with the F4 origin story, which both films did. it's ok to have connection with the group, like victor and reed together at the university, but doom also needs to be an independent threat for his crazy character to shine

He needs more screen time, a solo movie perhaps

What makes doom a unique and memorable villian is that he's an honorable villian. Yes, he's willing to do a LOT for power but never at the cost of his own honor.

I've always thought of Doom as the earthbound version of Thanos. Dark genius. Someone who was forsaken by Fate. And whose power is mostly self-obtained. They did Thanos right enough because they gave him multiple dimensions. Thanos could make a compelling moral argument, even though it was still evil. They just have to repeat that but with the themes and background of Dr Doom

They should do a Books of Doom style series after they introduce him in the Fantastic Four. Would be perfect.

I have always wondered why the cinematic universe never got it right because I LOVE the Victor Von Doom character: Doom is simultaneously epic and tragic.

Doctor Doom is my favourite Marvel Comics villain and one of my favourite villains in general. He is such a fascinating, complex and multi faceted Shakespearean character, both a master of magic and science, and has the potential to be one of the best cinematic villains in history, if written well and given time and development. I've always had a soft spot for the 2005 Fantastic Four film and still has a place in nostalgic heart, I do have to admit that while Julian McMahon by no means a perfect Doctor Doom, I still liked his performance and it seems like he was having a fun time as the character regardless, so while it's not perfect or accurate it's still tolerable and enjoyable for the time. However I unfortunately cannot say the same thing for Toby Kebbell's Doctor Doom in Fan4stic (2015), and of course it was not his fault for the film flopping or the portrayal of Marvel's greatest villain, but simply due to the actions of Josh Trank, Fox Studio's meddling and having no passion for the project. I thoroughly hope the MCU finally nail Doctor Doom in live-action as he is destined to make his cinematic come back as Marvel's greatest villain, and should be give true dedication and time to develop in the long term and given to an actor and director who are passionate about portraying the Ruler of Latveria in all his metallic glory.

Try fitting that backstory into a two hour movie. The is a reason DOOM is badass, is because the medium he was created in allows him to be.
