Honestly, I find dark modes more visually appealing as well. I HATE being blasted by dark text on white backgrounds all the time, and especially on my Galaxy Note 8, using dark modes wherever possible really helps it sip battery, and I can theme the accent colors as I please. I definitely am excited for Samsung's one UI update this year too. No more going to the theme store just to download a black theme.

That is one of the best decisions they took with One UI. I love the regular mode on my Note 9 but it's great that I can finally say Samsung's UI works as intended and my phone is faster than with Android 8.

It's astonishing to me that dark mode has taken so long to become integrated. I've always tweaked my settings as much as possible to create a dark mode on various screens, you'd think it would have been integrated much sooner.

I was a previous dark mode user too. However, I changed habits and went to the next level, as actually eye strain also depends on the contrast of screens and sourroundings. Therefore I use light themes at day and dark modes at nights. Furthermore, looking at dark elements increases melatonin production which makes you feel tired more early, so you better see when to turn it on effectively

I’m planing on using dark mode 24/7 even tho I learned in college that reading text paragraphs on a dark background strains your eyes like crazy, specifically white text on black background. I repeat, this only applies to big text paragraphs.

Every time after I read the white text in a black background for a while, when I look back into a brighter background, those dark texts still stay in my eyes for a while like. This hurts me every time when I read stuff on steam. However, if the overall color theme is dark (background not completely black and texts are grey)(or like dracula theme for text editors), then I can read them comfortably. This happens to me on both OLED and LCD screen.

This white wall behind you needs a dark mode.

I just started using light mode again just for a change and I am very confused. I somehow like both, but not if I'm using them for too long. I wish there was an option to set it to light when the sun comes up and to dark when the sun goes down, like my iPhone 11 Pro Max. That's the best option for me, but KZread sadly doesn't have such a function yet 😟

I wish he'd mentioned that roughly 50% of the population is afflicted with astigmatism and that those individuals are likely to experience way more eye strain reading white text on black backgrounds. I'm one of those people. Went full dark mode on everything for a while and noticed I started having issues focusing on text for long periods of time. One eye or the other would start to defocus and my vison would blur slightly. Switching back to light mode seems to have all but eliminated the issue for the time being. My eyes feel less tense even which isn't something I've ever been conscious of.

I've been a proponent of night mode/deluminator/dark themes since the days of theming XP. It's not only better for battery life, it saves retina burn. Look into Deluminator extension for chrome, it's amazing. Let's you keep images normal and set various options or dimness.

I think for real, light mode is way better on your eyes since your retina would shrink down to limit the light getting to your eyes. If you feel the screen being too bright you really should tune down the brightness of the screen rather than using dark mode. The only few reasons to use dark mode includes: if it feels more contrasty to you, or if want to concentrate on something important rather than getting distracted by the surrounding UI.

I just like it. I also think it doesn't strain my eyes.

I recently just switched to dark mode on apps that have it because I think that bright screen was keeping me up late at night, and causing issues with falling asleep. Doesn't help that I'm a night owl as well, I stayed up till 6am one night..

Dark theme is going to continue to be preferred until light theme designers can learn that high contrast white is hard on the eyes.

I was doing sort of a 'dark mode' back in the late 1990s. Even in office light the impact of a bright screen can induce a headache. I mentioned that I was using "dark mode" to my eye doctor and wow... I was read the riot act. I was told in no uncertain terms that I should use a dark screen nor should I "dim" lights in my office. Bright lighting should always be used when reading. So please show this to the eyeball doctors guild and see what they say.

I love dark mode. I especially love true black dark mode, because AMOLED screens. Google, DO GMAIL AND CHROME THE WHITE SUCKS. Thank you.

I'm 31 and I've been intuitively dimming the (then CRT) screen (and setting no less than 100Hz or preferably 120, even at the cost of resolution - back in crt days that is) and tweaking the system UI to dark themes, even when I was like a 12yo kid. The habit remained to this day though now with LCDs and OLEDs idc about refresh rate that much anymore

Only on regular screens, not on OLED ones. This is due to the dark making it harder to see for your eyes but the backlight is still bright AF

On windows 10, I enable night light and set it to 100%... What it means is that blue colors are turned into orange.

I literally just switched to dark mode on yt and this video came up in my notifications lol

There is a program called WindowTop it has the option to set dark every window. It will work even if the program can't show in dark mode .

Had no idea dark mode on android AMOLED made it so the black is not even lighting at all, that is really cool. Been using all along because I just liked the darker look.

Although I'm glad that Windows is now adopting a darker mode, I very much appreciate macOS's dark mode as it works within ALL Apple apps and elements (sometimes on Windows during dark mode some things are still white), works with third party apps, and even works on websites automatically (changes the white background to a dark one)

Until you're blinded by an app that doesn't support dark mode..

Although I have iPhone and android phone, I still went to buy two Lumia 950 (first one lost)because of their awesome OLED screen. Every thing just looks cool and comfortable on WP.

I was going to say this. Everyone keeps raving about dark mode but using windows made it the usual for me.. Coming to Android has been a step back.

@@pikachu5647 Android 3.0 was released in 2011, Windows Phone 7 in 2010, android is also cool but I prefer Windows Phone's Dark Mode.

I turned dark mode on last year on KZread and I’m so happy that Apple decided to add dark mode. I stay up late and KZread and iMessage looks so much better

The Zune HD nailed this almost a decade ago. How nice of the rest of the tech to finally catch up

Never noticed Linus had 2 earings in each ear + a piercing in one ear.

I don't see the video having a dark mode, so much for actually advancing in technology. We need the dark mode option so our eyes wont die from trying to watch this video.

I'm currently building a smart home application for Android, Windows and the webbrowser. The dark mode was an important element from the beginning of the design process and is actually quite challenging. My friend who is helping me build this app continuously asked why I bother with this "small" feature. The answer is actually quite simple: If you expect your user to use your app in the middle of the night to turn his lights on you better help him to not burst into tears because the screen is so fucking bright. Actually, I'd like the office programs etc to go one step further (like my Android implementation does) and turn the dark mode on and off with respect to sensor data like navigation systems in cars do. It would make so much more sense to have the dark mode scheduled by environmental inputs or at least a timer. But no, you can either use to dark mode permanently or don't use it at all(which most people do since the setting is buried inside dozens of submenus, looking at you Windows 10). And some dark mode implementations are really shitty as well. Outlook for example continues to show a bright white background within the preview Window which is not annoying at all (I get that the most emails nowadays are html formatted and are therefore shown as some kind of website, but they could at least go the easy way and apply an invert filter to the whole email, its better than showing the bright white window after all)

Or instead of invisible shield type of screen protectors I already wear glasses since my eyesight require me to with anti reflection coating that reduce the blue light exposure to my eyes in everything
