Is Dark Mode Actually Better For Your Eyes? - Cheddar Explains

Ғылым және технология

Dark mode is claimed by many to be better for your eyes, but this might not always be the case. In this video, Cheddar explains the science behind how our eyes react to reading under dark mode circumstances, and what the best practices for using dark mode might be.

I can't stand super dark dark modes. Like straight white on straight black. That's more hurtful on my eyes than anything else. I absolutely love Discord's and Twitter's dark modes. Discord's my favourite dark mode by far. Love that it has light grey text rather than white text. No one else seems to do that. KZread's dark mode (on the Android app at least, don't know about the others) is also alright, but I do wish it took a hint from Discord and made its text a light grey rather than pure white.

On important thing to note is that regardless of the mode you're using, the lighting conditions of the room play a big role in eye strain. If you have a single bright object (the screen) in an otherwise dark room (for example if you're checking your phone before bed) you're going to end up with more eye strain than if you're in a lit room. This is because the contrast between the bright screen and the dark room cause your eyes to constantly switch between narrowing the pupils to block light from the screen and widening the pupils to take in more light from the dark room. This can be easily mitigated by simply turning on a lamp to light the room. Even if the room isn't as bright as the screen, it can reduce the contrast enough to significantly improve eye strain. When I was young I would always play video games late at night with the lights off and I would find that I quickly reached a point where my eyes were burning so much that I had to stop playing. But since I started leaving a lamp on I've been able to go all night without any issue. Definitely an important factor to consider if you're concerned about eye strain, just make sure the lamp isn't directly in your field of view or it could cause the same issues you're trying to avoid.

This is the argument my mom used to make, justifying that she keep lights on in the living room whenever we watched TV. When I asked her why the theaters were completely unlit during movies, she just replied, 'Oh, that's different'. So, why do you think why movies seem to be just fine in almost completely dark environments, but not TV, video game, or computer screens?

I am also sight disabled and light sensitive and I have found that strong colors are a big problem especially on a white surface, so on my phone I use high contrast with a little bug so it makes all the text white with a dark grey outline or in light mode (because some apps suck) Black text with a light grey outline. I've been flipping between light mode and dark mode for a while. But recently I've found that, _for me,_ a sort of middle ground is the ideal when it comes to backgrounds. Stuff like beige, grey, cream, light brown, dark brown, dark blue, dark pink. Also, not _completely_ black or white text. There's something about this sort of colour choice which makes reading a lot easier on the eyes, in my opinion. Though it needs stuff like overlay apps and reading extension. I use Office a lot for college, and I like to have it on the default mode (because I think it's easier to see the text and symbols while they're black on white) and my background one of the colours I've stated above. Though, I change the background back to white if it's something I need to give to a teacher. If I don't need to do a lot of reading, though, I don't care about the colour mode. I just use KZread light mode because it's default. Discord dark mode is *amazing,* though, on the subject of default colours!

yes, and no. at night it's better to use dark mode since your surrounding is dark and having the screen blasts your eyes with white pixels can be blinding at night. but it's the opposite during the day since your surrounding is bright, so people should use light mode to read texts easier as opposed to reading white on black, which can cause strain to the eyes.

While you are correct, you can also use room lights at night and have screen surrounded in bright background and this way light mode is still better. But that poses other threat - if you use too much light hour or so before sleep it affects your sleep badly. So it is better to use dark mode with blue light filter before bed. I think this video is talking mostly about screen usage during work tho. We have regulations for office to have certain amount of light and that means that it's lit enough to have our screens white background.

Dark-mode only saves battery for OLED screens where each pixel is an LED; but for LCD screens and "LED" screens, the LED backlight is still on even for dark areas (though more advanced screens might have "local-dimming" which turns off sections of the backlight). The LCD just acts as a mask to block the light from the LED backlight. Of course OLEDs have their disadvantages as well like good old-fashioned burn-in.

I can’t just make the decision that smoking six packs a day and guzzling a few beers before bed is good for me. I might prefer that to the alternative, sure, but it’s not good for my health.

I totally agree with you!!! I used dark mode for more than 4 years (2018-2022) and lately I started to notice that it was difficult for me to read in dark mode. For example- news, articles, editorials, basically anything which consists of big paragraphs! So, from the end of 2022 I am using light mode again. Although initial days were difficult to adjust because of 4 years of dark mode, but now it's easier to read and it's also good for productivity. The only thing I miss from my dark mode days is how good the aesthetics were and still are in dark mode! But it won't be the reason for me to go back.

My preference for a long time for large portions of text has been black text on a GRAY background... all the advantages of light-mode but without the large expanses of blinding white. I did this specifically because I noticed I had an easier time reading dark on light than I did vice versa... but I also really have a problem with large blocks of bright colors & eye strain. Far as dark mode goes, I have a preference for it on CLIs... but that might just be from familiarity LOL. I've also occasionally made the text gray for CLI, which after watching the video I'm guessing would help deal with the contrast/light bloom issues

  • @JohnnieHougaardNielsen

I'm old enough to have started with monochrome displays with dark background. When I added a physical switch to my home computer to invert colors, dark on white background, it was a huge benefit to readability and eye strain, and I used it all the time, except (for obvious reasons) in a chess program. While this benefit has been reduced with better screen technology, I still find light background to be much better. When "team dark" acolytes talk about "searing white light", I suspect that this is because the brightness was turned up to cope with the worse readability using dark background. While this makes dark background "less bad" for readability, it does mean that the same brightness is not well-tuned for just switching to light mode. Arguably, dark background can make good sense around video content dominating the display. Of course, the battery life factor is real, but only with OLED (or similar) displays. With the still rather widespread LCD displays, the full backlight is turned on all the time, and blocked by individual LCD pixels to display dark.

I have a question: it seems like the eye works similarly to a camera lens, so im just assuming this. But even though by wider aperture under low light (dark screen mode), your depth of field is smaller, the depth of field is referring to how many parallel planes you can focus, not necessarily how much content of an image could be focused. And since you're staring at a flat screen, your depth of field doesn't need to be huge as long as that particular plane (same distance from eye to screen) is on focus. So why would your eye necessarily strain more with a wider aperture/opening (with dark mode)?

I'm in front of my computer basically all day, and trying to read long comments on YT with dark mode it's really difficult, most dark modes have this problems, that's why when I have to read long texts I use light mode, like in the browser looking at documentation, but strangely enough I can't do the same for codding, probably because the contrast of the dark background with the color of the keywords is way better that with a light background, also you are not really reading when you are codding in the same way than a long paragraph.

You can use the following only with CSS or QSS or XUL enabled software. Use colors like #444 or #363 for text and #000 for background. Even after hours and hours of looking at screen it hardly produces any strain. One more thing, the borders must be rendered a very faint color, #080404 ... A reddish tint will work quite well. U may also want to make it very thin, possibly dotted instead of solid. Whatever it is, It should be much much fainter than the texts. Also use opacity settings to make all images fainter. Use adblock to block most images and noscript to stop any video.

However, even some character-based terminals (such as Digital's VT100 and its successors) could do "reverse video" -- i.e. light mode, though it was rarely used.

Personally i prefer dark mode cause i fell the excess of light to be disturbing, especially when using the device inside, or during the night. Even tho i recognize it takes me slightly longer to get my eyes to read compared to when i use a lighter mode

I use dark mode for most things, but if I'm reading an article, I always switch to light mode. I find it easier to read large amounts of text in light mode.
