So fun fact, all the algorithm chat on this one, i recently found your channel through randomly watching other stuff that led me here. But this vid was an instant watch because for me, Mat pat was the big one i saw and he mentioned so many leaving and this one compiles more in depth even those he mentions. I love his channel (and even his was recent for me where i found him late '22 i think and binged almost all his content over a couple months) and look forward to at least the content continuing. But i can see all their points. Following the trends has caused many smaller channels ive followed to hit those burn out points as well over the last years. And as comments and your vid pointed out, youtube has been around so long that like real world jobs, there probably would come a large retirement phase at some point. Maybe this is the start of that so its certainly interesting. I know over my time posting, ive hit hiccups and had to start and stop posting for long stretches. Its life, ive always had bills to pay so my focus for a long time hasnt been to grow it to a job but still a hobby. Ive had people ask why i post (just mostly longplay game vids) like if im after it as a job and i always say no not really. I just enjoy filming my game plays and if someone else does, great. I think its looking at those algorithms and realizing i wouldnt want to have to cater to that to make a living. Im so small time, i get a kick when i see a vid get over a hundred views lol i enjoy that. I think also like you stated, maybe even tongue in cheek in the last seconds, with people leaving that opens the doors for others to carry on and maybe succeed. The blessing is that all these channels, no matter what, hopefully will just live on and provide content. I think thats a great reason for anyone to post something. For as many big channels mentioned here, theres many more small channels where heck, you look up how to do some random fix it job for your house and car, and some person made a video maybe 8 years ago that helps you through it. They did it for the heck of it and its just there, for us to consume. I think thats whats great about youtube. So i guess for the future, its gonna be an odd time watching some of these guys take steps back, but as businesses per se, it makes sense to get more behind the scenes and let the content take care of you. Heck, real world busineses go the same: start up, hustle hard, build, let the bussiness take care of you so you work less. Great vid on a no doubt interesting topic that can spark food for thought for not only a viewer but a creator perspective. And bright side, after finding this channel randomly, im sure ill be sticking round for more. Cheers to the new years and what may come next for all.

Nice video. First time viewer. Not gonna lie. I was on youtube in 2005 watching videos and I'm 30 now. from 2013 to 2019 I was in the military and I missed the majority of new KZreadrs that were coming out. I've heard of the channel but I have never watched any videos. When I joined the military, I also pretty much gave up social media when I was forced to give up my electronics for training, so that's kept me in the dark for a long time. I now have a better sense of happiness as well since I gave it up. Now I am that viewing in the back of the crowd that usually knows way more than they should.

It's understandable why creators are walking away done. They've done the same thing for years on end. Going from a casual or hobby thing, to entire businesses. With teams finances etc. It can be tiring after a while, the strenuous scheduling. While fun, as they progress with their lives their priorities change. Like Matpat, I give such credit leaving to be there more for his family.

@blackche1580 no one forces them sure. But it's part of the nature of the beast per se with youtube. If you want a level of upkeep you have to do a lot. And one person can't do that alone. Look at Pewdiepie for example, he didn't aim to make a business. But he realized he can't record and edit and have his own life all at once. So he hired editors to help with that stress of editing. So to pay them he has to have a level of income for him and them. He created what he wanted, but still it became a structure of business. To me OG youtubers are leaving is because it's not about the art. Because artists who don't post consistently aren't shared by the site. The site has become more about that. So they're leaving to make it fun again or focus on what matters.

I don’t really understand what the big deal is. People simply have more important things outside of KZread most notably family. The grind is also clearly physically and mentally straining which has lead to plenty of KZreadrs taking prolonged absences. Whether they return or are permanently retiring like MatPat I wish the best for all of them and hope they’re happy with whatever they continue to do in life! 😊🎉

I think it's mostly how there's been a large amount of more popular content creators all happening around the same time. A lot of them have also played big parts in fans' childhoods.

It's because a lot of them mark a generation who grow with youtube more accessible. So it's normal to people stay sad, even more when there isn't something serious forcing them to retire. I don't know if it's a thing in common between all of them, but more or less in 2010s where a lot of youtubers start to solidify a "brand" as the first ones who could live of creating content on youtube. That was way different from before where was more recognizable a meme video than a serie or even a channel itself. So it's been a shocking, more even when come from almost no visible signal that would even exited, but well, everyone become old one day, priority and interest change, even the own platform change and the life go on. Now that to new generation (in new on platform not exactly on age) to show and change, for best or worst, the direction of youtube and content.

because someone you are so used to seeing all the time and keeping up with is now leaving and you might never see them again or rarely ever see them again. Imagine your favourite shows end (which in my opinion is not as bad because its actors you will see again and you know none of it is real)

I think this has more to do with the ever closing window of creativity allowed on youtube more than anything. When TV has more creative liberty than youtube it's not hard to see why people don't want to jump thru an infinitely increasing set of hurdles to end up making content they don't even like. If youtube wasn't so lame lately with literally everything i don't think as many people would be calling it quits.

Tom Scott covered awesome topics. I wish he didn't stress himself so much with his timeline goals. If he didn't set such a hard goal to achieve, he could have had a lot more fun doing what he was doing. Either way i appreciate what Tom Scott did. I just wish creators uploaded content whenever it organically came together instead of setting unrealistic goals that can make something less enjoyable to do. Letting passion guide you seems better than letting something burn out your passions.. idk..

I must be a rare breed because I honestly don't care if something "sticks" or "works" I create what I want and I don't let my audience dictate my content. If more people were like that the internet would be a lot cooler place. Instead everyone listens to their fans and ends up doing things they don't want to do and now we are over ran with boring content from people who don't even care to make it. That is why all of them are quitting. I've been making content since VHS tapes. I wont stop and again it is because I don't let my fans tell me what to do.

The domino effect, it is the cumulative effect produced when one event sets off a series of similar or related events, a form of chain reaction. When one takes a step back or changes up their content, then others may follow. We are social creatures that like to operate in a similar fashion to one another. It is what makes us connect or even brings us together and forms communities. Hence, the term domino effect, it really is an effective effect that sends powerful waves, to which even after quite some time are able to be traced back to someone else who has experienced something similar. Some of, if not most of these creators know one another and have for quite some time felt the same way. Most of this has most likely been brought up by someone else, but I thought I'd throw this random wall of text out there.

I'm impressed by how long so many of these folks lasted. Lots of their content comes from something that would have hooked them at just the right age, and wouldn't necessarily be something they feel as passionate about a decade later. Most of us can name at least one thing that we really got into at age X, but were largely done with by X+10. (This is especially true when X is in that 18-25 range.) On top of that, KZread (or its audience) has this thing where creators need to post on a regular and consistent basis. Fall off that schedule, and the channel risks falling off the radar. This forces art and creativity, which does not always translate to quality, and certainly doesn't help the creator maintain enjoyment. I can think of many things I enjoy doing, but I know I would hate it if it became a scheduled task.
