Why Is Everyone Ditching Gmail?

Over the past decade, Gmail has become the go-to email service for most people. A lot of times, it’s simply assumed that you use Gmail, and there’s actually a bit of a stigma against Yahoo and Hotmail. But, in more recent times, Gmail has actually been losing quite a bit of market share, mainly to Apple. In fact, within the past year, Gmail’s market share has plummeted from 35.25% to 27.95%. This translates to hundreds of millions of users, but why are people leaving Gmail in droves? Well, the truth is that much of Gmail’s original appeal has worn off as most competitors have either caught up or even overtaken Google’s offering. Outlook, for example, offers even more storage than Gmail and Outlook have better integration with Microsoft Office products. Aside from this, Gmail has more or less hit market saturation as everyone who uses the internet frequently pretty much already has a Gmail. So, as competitors catch up to Google’s market saturation, Google will just continue to lose market share. Finally, last but not least, Apple has been very much leaning toward the privacy aspect of technology. A great example of this is their recent mail privacy protection program. This video explains the various reasons that Gmail is losing market share and the future of Gmail.

Since no one else seems to notice this, I'll point it out. The market share that graph is referring to is Client market share. When it says Apple has 59.5% of the market, it means Apple's mail clients, not iCloud email. When it refers to Gmail, it is referring to the web gmail client and the iOS and Android apps of the Gmail client. I have a gmail account, but I access it through Apple Mail on my iPhone. This would be reported under Apple on this graph, despite the fact that I'm using the gmail service. Gmail is still very dominant in terms of the service people are using, it's just that most people use the included mail app on their phone to access their gmail account.

The fact people have Gmail does not mean they use it. If the small players grow, it is because people are abandoning Gmail and starting to use the others. I think the main issue with your presentation is that you confuse the Gmail client with the Gmail email (or Google account). As an email I think it’s safe to say that at this point in time everyone has one, so they’re quite safe in that aspect. As a client though, it doesn’t really matter which you use since they’ll use your email data from the email that their hosting for you anyway. The Gmail client is just there as the default way to access your inbox, I personally use the Apple email client, just because it syncs well through my devices. But confusing that and saying that people are switching to Outlook because of more storage, that’s not a client perk, but an email hosting service perk, and I’d be highly sceptical if people switch their 15+ years old email addresses just so they can have a couple of GBs of storage for example.

I've used Gmail daily for 10 years now and if I have something to complain about, it would be the interface. It's pretty good but it's still polluted with a lot of apps and buttons and infos you don't need and don't use. Also they have gone full "zero right angle" recently, over the night, and you can't do shit about it. I also got my account and every important email on it stolen few years ago and I had no one to talk to. There are few Gmail features that are extremely useful that you won't get with any other email service or client... The most important one in my opinion would be the labels that allow you to better organise your emails without the need to copy/paste them into multiple folders (and waste space if they have some heavier attachments). One super-feature would also be adding any word or set of characters after a + sign that would follow your gmail username and before the @ sign - any email sent to this address would still be received as normaly, but you'll be able to see to wich + signature was the email sent and you can use that for organising your inbox (also, if you receive an email from an unknown sender, you could see what email address had they exactly used and you could pinpoint the origin of the leak)... As long as at least the label system for organizing isn't offered by any other service, I don't see any competition and if they ever offer such a solution, they'll still have to compete against gmail with their own super-features or at least match the ones Gmail offers to even cause a concern for Google. Now, although this sound as if I'm defending Google, I'd actually like to see competition doing any of this. I would probably even switch to Outlook as my main email client if it would offer these 2 features I was talking about...

Same, I have lots of bookmarks to movies and other content purchased through the google ecosystem. In order to survive google needs to wake up and create a consistent ecosystem of products that evolve rather than just get canned continually. Google does not need to constantly reinvent products with new branding, no that’s one reason they’re losing market share. Also a major commitment to privacy would help, having policies that balance data collection and monetization with privacy.

In Business, everyone uses Outlook. I have seen a lot of cooperations as consultant, noone uses Gmail and there is next to no alternative to Outlook (and Exchange, most just use Office 365). Private email does not matter I guess as there is little money in it anyways. Gmail is unpopular in Europe due to privacy issues, but I guess still a lot of people use it.

yeah, outlook is just ideal for businesses with the integrations with office365. Although I don´t have privacy issues with google... after all, the worst they can do is target ads at me to help find what I need or know what I do on a daily basis?... that´s boring even for me, but it gets me free software services, take my data lol. Guess everyone just values privacy differently.

A real email client is Mozilla's Thunderbird, which works with Gmail just fine, but uses a somewhat more traditional interface. And I've considered going to ProtonMail simply to annoy the data gatherers at Google. The Gmail interface is still a bloated mess, and why to this day do I have to move an email to Inbox to save it in another folder (without have two designators of which folder it is in?).

As part of a work change, I had to switch from Microsoft/Outlook products to Google/Gmail and it feels absolutely horrible and I miss my Outlook so much. Gmail is a very simple e-mail program which works fine for personal users (and I am satisfied with it for that purpose) However when you have to just a little bit of formatting or want to use tables or mail merge, Gmail is crap. Google archieving system AODocs is even worse (a lot worse). Microsoft got me hooked with products that just work and I do not want to have to learn to use Google products (for business use). Especially the integration between Microsoft products makes me miss MS.

You forgot about interface speed. Initially, I was used to fast interfaces like pine in which you were inside the server and the communication speed was almost instantaneous. Later, when web-mails emerged, they were slow. Each time that you did a click, it reloaded the whole page, making you to wait and wait and wait. But GMail was different, it felt like pine. It was almost instantaneous. No waits at all. But... nowadays... most of the custom emails are being banned by more and more email gigants...so they are destroying the competence. No more pine :(

Hotmail and my ISP's Pop3 mail server work 'straight-out-of-the-box'. (I use Gmail as a browser-based option anytime I sign a site subscription, to minimize the spam that come with site subscription in my primary email accounts.) I've never used it as my primary email account. G-mail for subscriptions, Hotmail for casual acquaintances, and Pop3 for anything personal.

Gmail is not an e-mail client. It's a service provider. E-mail client is a program to read write and receive e-mails. Gmail has their own web based client- which is the interface for Gmail. You can use any mail client to read Gmail - not necessarily their web page. Please use the right words for the right things, since you are educating people.
