Why Is Everyone Switching To DuckDuckGo?

Have you ever heard of a search engine called DuckDuckGo? Maybe you’ve heard of it in passing as some sort of private alternative to Google, but did you know that DuckDuckGo is one of the most popular websites in the world? In fact, DuckDuckGo is the 6th most visited website within the US pulling in 2.3 billion visits every single month. This equated to 80 million monthly active users back in 2020. By now, that number is likely closer to 100 million. But why do so many people choose to use DuckDuckGo? Well, of course, there’s the whole privacy. Unlike Google search, DuckDuckGo is truly private meaning that your searches are truly anonymous. But, even more than that, DuckDuckGo can vastly improve the briskness of your internet experience as it removes the Google-based trackers that can sometimes bog down websites. This video tells the story of DuckDuckGo and how DuckDuckGo became one of the most popular websites in the world.

@@pixell3607 I think the easiest way to see that is to just try other search engines. I use Brave myself which has the button to check the same search result on other major engines. Lately every time I've checked the results on Google they're significantly less useful, mostly being taken over by content farming websites that don't actually provide useful content. I've heard it's due to reasons like large language models plus good Google search engine optimization that people are able to brute force traffic to their website to make money, rather than the site being brought up based on it's usefulness. Then there's things like Google's automatic answers being wrong much of the time and not caring if you report it, or their blatant bias in the results, and that covers a lot of how they've "mangled their search engine". I can't even get Google to bring up useful results most of the time even when using their advanced search option.

DuckDuck go just straight up give me more neutral result, not pigeonhole me into anything, also it was more barebone, faster, and offer pretty much the same result like google. why would i use google? which give me more slower, bloated , ads ridden result, when i can have a more cleaner search engine No wonder people switched to DuckDuckGo, because Google adopt a Tone Deaf approach.

I've been using DDG for years, and the main reason is probably SEO. That is a poison that turned google into an AD. Having to shuffle through 6 pages of absolute garbage every search on google takes a toll on anyone. DDG is becoming worse with the years (as is the internet with the millions of gargabe clickbait void content around), but it's still way and beyond google. The added privacy is a nice bonus to have.

As long time DDG user i can tell you that DDG is...annoying. Yeah right. Their problem is that DDG completely ignores your search operators. Like, you search [whatever -something] and DDG will keep feeding you with results containing [something]. No matter that you do their search results is always full of noise and irrelevant results and they dont allow you to discard that noise. This is especially annoying if you search for "less common" results. I use it and will use again, but sometimes you have to switch to Google for more refined results.

Sorry to be the party pooper, but it's definitely not that simple. Bing's API costs about $20 per 1000 requests. If DuckDuckGo has 1B visits per month (the author even claims 2.3B), and let's assume that each visit equals 1 search request (it's more, but let's stick to it for simplification), it means that it costs them at least *20 million dollars per month* only to use the API, not to mention the server infrastructure costs, which would also be huge with that kind of traffic. You wouldn't believe that some unknown rich dude lights up on fire literally *hundreds of millions of dollars* each year out of pure goodness of his heart, right? :) There has to be a way to make money from it. The other interesting phenomenon are ecological search engines that plant a tree or etc for every hundred searches you make, or donate a good percentage of profits towards resolving an environmental problem
