Also, Kpop idols these days are mostly associated with cutesy boyfriend/girlfriend image and most fans are teens (usually teen girls). So, being an idol in 20s to early 30s is fine, but nobody wants to see a 40yr old guy doing baby-voice aegyo to a bunch of 14yr olds.

All except for Chen. The only drama he’s been in is EXO Next Door. I believe he has shared in the past that he’s not interested in acting.

Another example is Rowoon (ex SF9 member) once fnc started to notice he was more popular they never promoted him whenever SF9 would come back which is why a lot of people didn’t know he was an idol… Anyways please Stan SF9 and Rowoon✨

I agree with you, but I think his herniated disc should also be taken into consideration. While it's sad that he's not with his fellow members, I think he was also struggling with his dancing now due to his bad injury (you can see it on his Tear Drop fancams). Rowoon looks like he genuinely still wants to be in the group despite the busy scheds and his condition, so FNC is the bummer in this situation.

Kpop idols can be ambitious and versatile, they have opportunities to try many different endeavours so if they have the talent for it, they can also be successful actors starring in kdramas and film. it's no surprise many are leaving to try acting, being a K-pop idol is too pressured, it's no wonder they eventually tire of it. It's great that as Artists, they can do this, they are lucky to be in the business they are in

Having two job is hard. Thats why i respect EXO D.O, he is still a singer and an actor with many movies with such a pack schedule.

EXO before they get famous only a couple line of fans come to their fans meeting. They are also considered as a flop. And then later on, they prove all the people called they flop wrong. Both EXO and BTS build their own legacy. They are the best and my favs.

But I was mainly trying to say someone in the industry not established won't have the time to do it all like d.o. ... going out and doing your own promotions on top of your training and group practice takes a lot of time. That's why I think some choose one career over the other to focus on when their group doesn't get big after a couple of years.

There was this Games Caterer episodes where artists under starship, both actors and idols joined. You can see how the actors still can chat during bus rides but idols just slept all throughout. Life as idols is very tiring especially during comeback cycles. They have to learn choreographies, record, go for ads/photoshoot, preparing tours, fansign, do IG/weverse live, doing variety/shows, even maybe compose/write their own songs. It seemed that it was known that life as idols are not sustainable in long run.

I feel some idols are actually not solo material so they venture into different genre

& than theres my bias Kim Jiwoong of ZB1 who debuted as an Idol at 17 with INX in 2017, disbanded in their rookie year, tried to redebut twice in 2 other groups (ATEEN & B.I.T) but treated like crap by their companies... in 2020 he then switched to acting, he built up his fanbase as a web drama actor, gaining huge popularity in 2 K-BLs with his acting partner also an Idol Yoon Seobin...then in 2023 through Idol survival show Boys Planet he got his big Idol break to redebut in ZEROBASEONE...he was 24, haters said he was too old to redebut but he did & it was mostly his acting fanbase that voted for him to achieve his dreams of performing on stage again😭♥️, in ZB1 hes won so many Rookie of the Yeaar awards, achieved million unit selling albums, performed all over the world for thousands of Zerose fandom, its a beautiful compelling story, Jiwoong may go back to acting after his Idol dream ends but whatever he does he has his loyal fanbase called Woongdeongies & OT9 Zerose, that support him 1000%!❤🦋💪🙏🌹

honestly as a sf9 fan, rowoon’s departure from the group was devastating. since he was always known as one of the most dedicated to it, in the beginning. when his first lead role took off, that time was truly one of the last times we seen him as an artist. still sad about it to this day, but i wish him well

I was literally just wondering yesterday why idols become actors so often, and then here’s this video

This phenomenon happens in almost all type of jobs. There are a lot of people who said jobs related to engineering, computer, network, or oil pay really well. But in reality, just like every other job, the salary depends a lot on individual's skill and luck. But for jobs surrounded in luxury, not getting paid at all is, in my opinion, frustrating.

That's because some of those idols wanted to be actors/actresses from the beginning. It is said it's easier to become an actor/actress through being an idol because the company can pull some strings for you

Kpop idols have to act all the time. And dance. And sing. Actors only need to act. They are in no position to think too highly of themselves.

Idols life is really hard they never get a chance to rest as compare to actors but both job are not easy it's about luck and fate some may got more popular in k pop and some may get more popular in dramas where they get more benefit that's the job they took

the fans are less toxic, better people supporting them, less hate or no hate at all, better payed, respect from the public.

i also think another reason they change is that becoming an idol is sometimes easier/faster way to get popular and then transition into acting and be a popular actor than to just become an actor straight away. i remember reading about some idols talking about it. i think 1 example was also super juniors sindong, i believe he said once that he didnt want to be an idol but an actor and sm said just debut release a few songs and then transition into an actor or something on those lines.

I never thought the process of becoming an idol was easy or fast. Idols train for hours every day, often for years. They must learn dancing, singing, modeling, public speaking, etc. Then if they debut, which many don't even after years of training, they may never gain enough of a fan base to become popular or recognized.

Where as theres actors that are amazing in their 40s who been actors for 10-20yrs and are just starting to get lead roles/recognition. What im trying to say is, in the long run its “most likely” easier to become an idol first (even if it takes 7yrs or more) to debut or get some fans, and then transition into acting than to just straight up become an actor and maybe have to wait 10-20 yrs before you start getting recognised and getting lead roles. The certain amount of idols that became actors ive seen (cant comment on the ones i havnt seen) tend to get a couple supporting roles or even second lead roles and then after like 2-4 roles they end up being lead actors.

Idols also built that fanbase with hardwork in the first place. It's not like they came out of the womb and instantly had all these fans for no reason. So while you may think it's easy for an idol to become famous in acting industry, it's actually not. The supposed fame needed some hardwork before they got it. And no one's stopping actors from stepping into singing careers/idols. It's just that actors are not so willing to venture into different opportunities and not so brave as idols are. But that's on them for being so prideful

Some don't get even get a single paycheck in years before disbanding cuz they failed to become enough popular. Whatever little money is made ends up in the company's hands for paying idol training debt. Actors know this thing about lower wage than acting industry and that's exactly why they are too prideful to venture into idol industry. That's on them

I'm sorry but the majority of those you showed are still VERY involved in Kpop. And those people were NOT making those faces at actor/idols. That reaction was to J. Y. Park making a complete fool of himself at an award show. Helloooo Cha Eunwoo IU Seo In Guk Junho Jinyoung Siwon Sungjae D.O. Suho Kim Hyunjoong And so many more.

But actors are replaceable too. One scandal and you're over. All jobs in the entertainment industry expire quickly. And with everyone wanting to be an idol and actor, the oversaturation has made so many people disappear quickly

Kpop idols are gambling with their time, mental health, physical health, privacy, safety, money and work. The industry is harsh and more than half of it depends on a delusional parasocial relationships that could shatter or make an idol or group. I don't blame idols for exploring other areas in the entertainment industry. I am still a huge fan of Kpop, but the least I can do as a fan who actually cares is try to not return that toxicity to idols and try to support them as humanely as possible. I keep thinking about Karina having to apologize for being in a relationship and many other incidents that are just crazy.

I didn't even know Doh Kyungsoo, I.U., Suzy, and Cha Eunwoo were idols when I first watched the dramas they were in.

imo, i dont mind eunwoo acting at all, hes doing so well and his K-dramas are very interesting. i especially liked True Beauty cause it reminded me of moonbin and in the storyline its similar to what has happened to him as well, but its not a bad thing to be both a kpop idol and kdrama actor.

Some of the idols actually wanted to be actors/ actresses. They must have known or found out that the kpop community is so toxic that u get hate even for breathing. Acting still have some situations like that but more civilised people seem to be in the kdrama community. After all,it is their decision and nobody should force them to leave or stay in the industries.

Many of my favorite non Kpop idols do both singing and acting. Some are more prominent in one versus the other while some are good at both. It is sad of they cross over to acting for the wrong reasons because acting is not easy either. You need to have the talent and all too, but I guess as kpop idols they would get the support from fans even if acting is not their forte.

Ok but putting eunwoo on the thumbnail is insane. Boy just released an album? Ya'll be sleeping on him and then saying this?

They get less hate, more freedom, more pay, respect and more options

Before even starting to watch the video, I have two of many possible reasons why Kpop idols are turning into acting. One major reason I think is that because it is REALLY RARE for someone to be active as an idol for many years. I've been a Kpop fan for 15 years and VERY FEW idols that were active when I first got into Kpop are still active till this day. And the few that are still active aren't really releasing new music that often. Idols really only remain "popular" for about 5 years, or 7 if they are lucky. But as an actor you can really only grow and become even more popular as the years go by (this is of course only if they get good roles often and don't get into scandals). Another possible reason is that actors have more liberty to date. Fans of actors usually ship those actors with their costars so when news of them dating come out, they rarely receive hate from their fans. And as we all know, Kpop idols almost always get a lot of hate when they date someone, they even lose a lot of fans.

in my country you could be +40 and still be popular as a singer.. crazy how they debut a teenager who should be in middle school instead of being infront of a camera with tones of make up on and those who are of age who can easily pull off any concept are called old and outdated

Idols are treated pretty different to „regular“ musicians in sk. They are aimed to a younger audience mostly (even though their fans grow up with them over time) The mainstream music scene in Korea doesn’t just consist of idols.

Netflix is notorious around the world. Different countries have different types of problems with Netflix.

I realized yesterday that idols are but musical geisha. Going through training and looks modifications. Being fed and housed by the company during training, etc. Then, expected indentured servitute paying off the training period. Going out in make up and unrealistic outfits. They are Korean Geisha. That's crazy.

I think have an actor in the group is more of a marketing ploy. It’s to bring in more fans and more popularity. That means bring more attention to the group, and spending more money. Especially when K-pop was still breaking Japan and hallyu was getting momentum. So it became the norm having at least one member who are acting . Now a lot of these idols do get backlash because they are lacking in skill or typecast. I do agree that money is a big factor and not everyone wants to be an idol for the next 20 years.

the last part is actually my biggest question about idol contract. why would idol not only has less share but also need to pay for the accommodation that the company actually has to pay. if the conpany was to scared the idol wont get them the profit then its ok to get some such as lesson fee for them to cover and half accommodation being paid by each, however the profit need to be half I half or at least 40:60. after all both work for eo or even the idol work for the company not the other way around. I couldn't even understand how the government let such exploitation happen for decades and still no change. also the way the company target young and poor child so the family couldnt afford any lawyer even a mere knowledge about the contract just to trap this idols to work for them at cheap price while still need to paid the accommodation. disgusting system

as ballad/vocal based kpop group they have a longevity advantage as melody's are happy to grow older with their idols❤ sungjae is still an A list actor but he will be btob for life!

T-ara's members who are all established actresses got more from acting gigs than singing, mind you T-ara was the best-selling girl group of their time, had dozens of concerts/fanmeets per year and were offered +100 CFs; some had +1M$ as fees, so...yeah I get it.

If the idols are very talented in acting, think they will do just fine. Like i had no idea that cha eunwoo just came out with a solo album until the other day.

One huge one is not getting paid for sure but to me its also about the fact that idols dont have any privacy and have to be perfect while actors have somewhat more freedom and get paid.

I think it's a bit of an unfair advantage though. Idols have a fanbase and they will help them even if the idol has no talent. Cha eunwoo initially was pretty bad at acting too. These actors have to now compete with idols.

Another reason could be that not all idols are into dance pop genre (that's become the mainstream kpop) so working as actors they can earn enough money for their agencies to give them a little freedom in their music careers, like what cha eun woo did with his solo album.

It's not true the older idols have more charisma than the brand new ones. I know veteran Actors who are friends with Idols so please don't judge them

After idoling acting is a walk in the park, much much easier.

I was scrolling down here in the comments section and i saw a few that are shading Blackpink which i don't understand why. Jennie already acted on "The Idol", Lisa is about to appear in the 3rd season of "The Black Lotus" and Jisoo is currently shooting a movie and a drama.

That's why idol companies train them for a long time so that they can have a hold on them financially for a long time as well. I'm not against training. But how talentless could you be to be trained for 2 years or more? Unless they have a motive. A year of training is enough. Besides why would someone join a sing and dance group if he or she doesn't have a talent for it to begin with. If I were that person, I will be insulted if I need more than a year of training if I know I am already talented.... unless I indeed just came with a pretty face and nothing else which is still audacious.

If Kyungsoo earned more as an idol, and SM kept almost all the money EXO was making. Just imagine the amount they gave to that company. And they could have earned so much more if not for SM not promoting properly and cutting lots of opportunities to go outside of Asia. SM is now paying its karma, and I'm so glad artist are leaving and seeing more options for themselves.

"many of them don't go to university or even finish high school" -- this isn't true. a lot of these kpop dols were top students in their schools when they were recruited. it's more the norm that kpop idols finish their high school, studying while pursuing their careers, and there's a high percentage of them pursuing college degrees or even getting master's degrees. examples are members of the biggest, most successful, and iconic groups like big bang, shinhwa, shinee, btob, exo, bts, and seventeen. in bts alone, all members have received their college degrees and are currently enrolled in master's programs, even as they are fulfilling their military draft requirements. exo xiumin even has a ph.d!

The reason he stopped acting was also bcus of this reason bcus he wanted to be an idol as a part of bts and didn’t want to be known as actor v. It’s good that she added him bcus back then he got hate for it too. Some toxic fan said that he wanted to outshine bts as a group and start his solo carried as an actor bcus it’s easier that way
