Korean Actors Who Were Traumatized By Their Roles

Ойын-сауық

Some Korean actors had taken on traumatizing roles that left them with long-lasting mental problems. From The Glory to Squid Game, what K-Dramas were so bad for the cast's mental health?

Shin Ye-Eun's acting in "The Glory" was phenomenal, I really hated her character and felt sick every time she was in a scene. From a viewer's point of view, the "curling iron" scene was the most horrific in the entire series, I cannot imagine how damaging to her mental health was filming it. What's really sickening tho, is that it happened in real life, to a real teenager. Kim Jae-Wook played another twisted character in "Death's Game", but maybe because of how he felt after "Voice" he was able to deal with the role in a safer way this time around.

True, but if I can be completely be honest some actors are so good that you think it's them. When I watched the world of the married, the actors were so good I couldn't help but dislike the actors especially han seohee, but I would also would like to add that I was 12 when watching it (so I was just a kid and immature) I never sent a hate comment and I was aware it was fake but I couldn't help but feel hate because as humans we attach personality to faces and if the only personality even if acting you see is disgusting behavior you cant help but attach it to the face. And korean dramas tend to be more extreme and more evoking, longer and using pathos than American shows so it was also smt new but not new to me. But now that I'm older I love han seohee and I follow and keep up to date and watch her dramas.

He has played so many disturbingly twisted characters over and over that he had to go MIA for years only to come back and do a serial killer project bc at this point he is obsessed and stuck in a loop. You need to get your act together bc you do not have any idea what the people you listed off are going through- you just like to run your ignorant mouth off like the idiot you are. As a former actress in training, I remember when there was a trial for a very dark character for a play that we all had to try for. I remember being in so out of it during my prep and when I had to go up on stage I started to have a panic/anxiety attack because I felt such a heavy and evil energy doing it - I ended up in the hospital right after. Mental health is no joke, and it can take such a huge toll on who you are and how you perceive the world; there should be much professional support in any acting roles.

I don't think most people comprehend that the world we live in is not only made up of what we can see. And stepping into a role requires you to open up yourself to be possessed by these spirits in order to enhance your performance. The trouble is by design, human bodies are vessels and once you have emptied out what makes you uniquely you then you become lost.

Unfortunately, you can't always know how something will affect you until you're already in the middle of it. Conceptualizing it ahead of time is not the same as having a person in front of you in full bruise and scar makeup screaming and crying. It can take hours to film some scenes, and the lights on set can get very hot - there's a limit to how much you can prepare for where your brain will be when the exhaustion starts to kick in and the pain from your scene partner seems so real. Especially for The Glory - the girl who played the teenage victim did a great job with the role, which only makes it harder for the girl playing the villain. There should definitely be follow-up counseling, though, and viewers need to stop attacking actors just because they hated the character they played.

These are the pitfalls of using "method acting" as a technique for getting into character. And this is why more studios should hire more *intimacy coordinators* to ensure not only the success of a production but also the well-being of their talent. Intimacy coordinators are efficient in giving actors the skills and teaching methods on how to separate themselves from their characters without compromising their performance.

We watch these films and they have such an impact. I can think of many times I would think about a movie for days, bc it gets you thinking, it exposes you to a world unfamiliar and makes you accept that that’s someone’s reality. Can’t even imagine how it is for actors who are in that mindset for months while filming, not to begin thinking what they have to go trough to get into the character and understand their thoughts

A lot of these comments are so ignorant and cringey AF. I always find it ironic that people who love k-dramas and claim to love k-culture don't even know the true hardships of being a celebrity in Korea. The heavy emotional and mental toll creates these underlying conditions and are only exacerbated by playing these roles. Korea still considers mental health topics as a taboo subject. Instead of getting professional help or talking to a professional, celebrities are told by their management companies to keep it to themselves. Look at the kpop industry. PS: to the narrator of these videos, at least TRY to say their names correctly... and stop with the vocal fry.

I think it’s extremely important nowadays for these actors to come out on shows and show themselves as their real self. In the 80’s, 90’s it made sense that people would associate you with a character that was evil and you couldn’t do much about it, I mean especially in Korea where it was probably hard for people to find other things if you. Like even in 2016. Won’t he drama while you were sleeping. Apparently the main protagonist would get people saying he’s evil irl. Like in 2016? That modern, people still managed to think the character was real, and he was a real villain. So it’s important for agencies and hopefully everyone around them to get their social media PR game on point. Get them a bunch of shows that can show how different they are from that character.

Some actors may find it emotionally challenging to portray certain characters, especially those that involve dark or morally complex themes. Here are a few potential reasons why actors might experience distress: 1. **Emotional Immersion**: Actors often immerse themselves deeply into their roles to convey authentic emotions. Portraying a bad character can require tapping into negative emotions like anger, sadness, or guilt, which can be emotionally draining. 2. **Psychological Impact**: Delving into the psyche of a morally ambiguous character can stir up personal issues or unresolved traumas for some actors, leading to psychological distress. 3. **Disconnecting from the Character**: After filming, some actors may struggle to detach themselves from the character they portrayed, leading to difficulty in returning to their normal mindset or emotions. 4. **Public Perception**: Actors may also face backlash or criticism from the public for playing negative roles, which can contribute to feelings of guilt or self-doubt. 5. **Lack of Support**: In some cases, actors may not receive adequate support or resources to process the emotional toll of their roles, leading to increased vulnerability to psychological distress.

The Knetizens are much more forgiving towards movie actors than the K-Drama actors. Shin ye eun was already a well known name and it was not a big deal for her to have not taken the role in “The glory” but she loved the script and wanted to be a part of the project wanting to show and expand her acting range but boy it did not go well.

I can’t help but recall Anya Taylor-Joy saying that sets for horror/thriller movies are always so light. I imagine it helps separate fiction from reality. Imagine how exhausting and emotionally draining it is to constantly be immersed in a character set in a terrifying situation. That’s why I never liked scenes where explicit torture is shown. It feels too real

People are sick to think an acoter is the actual role. They should be celibated instead of tormented for doing such amaxing work. Its no easy task especially in korean style of writing to do these roles. But its showing you the mental state of society blinded in a fiction world to not face the real world.

It's because the environment off set is not positive enough. I used to watch a very serious drama and all those actors used to be chaotic off stage, like completely opposite of whatever characters they were playing, that's how they used to relieve their stress. Meanwhile Koreans can't do this, there's something wrong with their society.

Weak minded ppl who simply like acting shouldn't do the job just bcs they like it. 1st they should ask themselves can they handle the downsides. I only excuse actors in horror movies or shows bcs they work in the most anxiety and fear inducing environment and have to see terrifying images since sometimes the "monster" is physical effects but they too should also be mindful abt choosing such roles in the 1st place. And a fear of supernatural is way more dangerous and scary mindset bcs even against the most evil human being you can still somehow try to defend yourself but against something not human you're done for. So bscly what I want to say is don't accept every role just bcs of money if you have the slightest doubt that it will "mess you up" and then complain abt it. For ex. I know my weakness is some types of horror, ik I can't watch it and ik that if I was an actress I wouldn't be able to film any movie or show of that genre, even if you're in need of money there will always be some role that you may not like bcs it's not "big" enough but pays.

This is why I don’t like these kind of films, the actors are so talented but they don’t get the mental support they need after, and I don’t think it’s worth their lives just for entertainment purposes. There’s plenty of messed up stories and news cases you can watch for thrills if you need them. (Not trying to hate on anyone, I have loads of friends who enjoy horror and thriller, etc and we still like each other.)
