Why I still use a camcorder

Updated 2024 video: • Why I Still Use A Camc...
A while back people were using camcorders a lot to record videos. However, because phone cameras are getting better, lots of people are using their phones to shoot videos. But I still use a sony handycam to record my KZread videos and vlogs. In this video I will tell you why. sony camcorder review. In this video I am using the HDR-PJ650, HDR-CX240E and FDR-AX53. The FDR AX53 is in my opinion one of the best camcorders 2023 for the price. The CX240e is very similar to the Sony HDR-CX405. But that one also has XAVC-S, optical steadyshot and a larger zoom.
I will compare the camcorder to a mirrorless camera, which is similar to a DSLR. Camcorder vs smartphone
Shot on: Sony ZV-E10, Sony HDR-PJ650E, Sony FDR-AX53

    I used to work as a videoreporter for many years. For this job a camcorder is still the best option. It gives you many opportunities while filming. You can react very fast to new and permanently changing situations. DSLR cameras might deliver a better quality whe you can plan and repeat several times every single shot.

    Thanks for the comment! I agree both have their strengths and weaknesses. Mirrorless cameras can give a blurry background and better low light performance in a small body, which camcorders cant. But mirrorless cameras (depends on the model of course) don't have features like built in ND filters, large zoom, different battery sizes.

    Camcorders for weddings 100%! After using a DSLR for ~10 years, camcorders are a breath of fresh air. I can focus on capturing what's going on around me rather than missing the shot because I was fiddling with a setting. Very low light can sometimes be their downfall but that's the only occasion I'll break out the DSLR.

    I've been using camcorders for almost 20 years and have built two popular KZread channels using them. For a long time I used a Sony 4K camcorder but they don't offer 50/60FPS so I switched to the Panasonic HC-X1500 which is brilliant -- although not without flaws.

    Nice! thanks for the comment. I also find it disappointing that the sony ones don't offer 4k at 60fps. (except their mirrorless style bodies or more expensive cameras like FX30, FX6 or Z190) And a perfect camera doesn't exist of course.

    The 'no distractions' thing is also why I keep a separate camera as well as having a smartphone. On a videoing trip I may be using my phone for looking at a map, etc. I currently use a compact camera for filming, but having used my Dad's old tape-based camcorder in the 2000s, I'm now drawn to getting a camcorder.

    In these aspects I like to compare myself to what the professionals use: in this case that would mean filmmakers, the ones that make actual movies and documentaries. Those cameras have no stabilisation, no AF, and often, no zoom. And when they do have stabilisation, they're usually huge rigs that you have to support yourself. So you can learn to keep still while holding a camera, at least until you can afford a new one with IS 😁 and when you do, you'll have combined stabilisation from what you learned with the old camera, and the technology from the new camera :)

    I remember doing some video projects work whilst serving in the army (conscripted) circa 2004, and using a mini-DV camcorder. Being able to use Firewire to capture both live views and recording transfers from the camera in Premiere was great too. This was probably the best thing at the time because they handed me 30+ VHS tapes, VCDs, and DVDs that I needed to digitize and unify the formats for editing. The VHS tapes were a pain since I only had a RealMagic capture card at home so tapes had to be digitized in real-time. The flip (up)side is that I got to stay home and not have to report in to camp during that period. I wonder if the current generation of camcorders can actually do this (albeit with USB probably).

  • @VinnytotheK

    @VinnytotheK

    They wouldn't have had to be digitized in real-time if you had your RealMagic capture card? How is that so?

  • @BigBenAdv

    @BigBenAdv

    5 ай бұрын

    @@VinnytotheK I mentioned that it had to be digitalized in real-time with the realmagic since it's purely an analog capture card compared to the other mediums (VCD/ DVD) which could be ripped much faster. The annoying part for VHS is that you need to be awake to monitor and hit record/ stop manually unlike DV cam firewire transfers which would be handled automatically. OTOH, I got to effectively stay home for 3 months and got awarded off time for another month's worth once the project completed so there's that.

    Thanks for the comment and sorry for the confusion, I meant Action Camera. It is a Sony HDR-AS50, but other Sony models also work with multi camera control (it has to be a sony action cam with wifi support i think). It has a fixed focus wide angle lens so it isn't really great for b-roll. I mostly use it as a compact vlogging camera when going on a vacation. But if I use it with the AX53 I use it right next to it, so I can have multiple perspectives. (wide angle with the action cam and medium / close up with the AX53). Later in post I can switch between them to see which fits the best. Keep in mind that Sony stopped making Action cams. So now you can probably only find them on the used market.

    I use all of them. I bought a Canon camcorder about 6 years ago and I really don't regret it. When I'm not in the mood to mess with any of the other cameras including the DSLR for the phone and fiddle with them I just pulled the camcorder out flip the screen out and around and start recording. The longest time I might spend setting up is mounting it onto a tripod which takes only a moment. For content creation is just the best and you can also include footage from any of the other devices in the final video.

    They’re still needed depending on what type of work you’re doing. Like for sports. If you’re recording an entire game start to finish you won’t one long take zooming in for close ups and zooming out…Which would be hard to do with a Mirrorless, you have to twist the lens in and out most lens don’t have power zoom, plus with the smaller sensor the focus distance isn’t massive. You can zoom out for a wide shot, then zoom in for a close up with out loosing focus. Even Sony with its amazing autofocus still will have to catch up, and when you’re filming live that’s important. Also all mirrorless cameras even the ones that have no record limits still break the clips up into 30 min clips and that’s not always practical

    Camcorders are my favorite of the three. I have used all three types of cameras. As you mentioned they all have their pros and cons, but my number 1 choice is camcorders. I find them to be highly underrated. Having been in film school I find many people liked to bandwagon on getting DSLR or mirrorless cameras. While those cameras could be good I found the camcorders having more flexibility including with that zoom feature you're talking about. I've had chances to look at some video shot on 4K camcorders and I'm surprised at just how good it can look especially with the zoom feature. I rented out a Canon 400XF Camcorder for the Chicago Marathon and the LCD screen didn't do It justice. It wasn't until I watched the footage again on a larger Apple computer screen that I saw how good it can look. My latest video upload on this channel is from a Chicago Air & Water show video. That was shot with a Sony PXW-X70 HD camera. That was also a freelance gig and that was a great camera for that freelance project. Being on a rocky boat and trying to capture planes flying fast. The zoom feature really helped there. You can watch the video and see for yourself what I mean. It turned out great. The 4K version of that camcorder could make the planes look even better I bet.

    I have been using Sony Camcorders for over 16 years - HDR-HC7 MiniDV (until I drowned it), HDR-CX550 (Great stabilisation), and HDR-AX100 (not good stabilisation). I believe the size of the sensor has something to do with this. I do travel videos for You Tube. The CX550 is mounted in the windscreen these days and the AX100 sits on the seat beside me for handheld driveby shots. The still camera in the AX100 I find more than adequate, and I only shoot in 1080p. I would like to upgrade the CX550, but find that I can get around it's inadequacies in Da Vinci Resolve. All in one shooting is the key for me. Being in Australia, we shoot at 25fps, whereas phones are all 30fps, which creates another problem in combining frame rates in post. The work around is that you might have an hour at 25fps and 10 minutes at 30fps, and you need to edit the whole lot at 30fps to get a smooth(ish) result. Overall, less gear, less hassle, quicker & smoother shooting.

I even had a Panasonic DMC CM1 which had the same software and lens as a simple automatic camera, also a 1" sensor! It was described as "a camera with a phone attached"! Took lovely pictures, but the video suffered from the slightly jerky zoom control that you described and then with no viewfinder it was really hard to use it in strong sunlight or against the sky for aircraft. I stayed with it for years for the photo quality but the ultimate downfall was that Panasonic stopped the possibility to update the OS. I started to loose basic compatibility with it as far as the smart phone side was concerned. Thanks for the comment! For me it's nice to have a second angle to choose from because it's wider. You can switch between a wide angle and close up after recording which gives you more flexibility. And because of that it's easier to hide jump cuts because then you can just switch to the different camera instead of seeing an ugly jump cut. Also you don't need to use the camera in the same position. So you can put it further away for example, but still see the preview of both cameras on 1 single camera. So great for multicam shoots in my opinion.

    @@ImportantTech What is it called so I can read all about it? Can you have the HDMI out display both cameras in two halves by any chance? Is the second camera 4K? I am looking to get a 4K TV soon, so haven't been enjoying the 4K feature. It was a bumpy experience learning that I will be able to output 4K at 50hz/fps to my TV and record in 1080p. There's a little confusion on the internet about that, but it means with a capture card we can indeed record 4K at 50-60fps, just not on the camera.

    @@DaveThompsonfairlife4all sadly it won't show the other camera through HDMI because the other camera is with wifi wirelessly connected. Mine is called HDR-AS50 and it can shoot only in 1080 but there's also FDR X3000 which shoots 4k. But they discontinued it. Also the X3000 is still holding its value and isn't worth the price they ask for on the used market.

    @@ImportantTech Thanks for that info. Funny that we crave 4K when 1080 is still very good! I still enjoy my 1080p TV, but then I've never really experienced true 4K, unless you include cropping 1080p out of 4K footage. I wish the terminology had remained more consistent: We didn't started labelling our screens in "K" until 2160p came along. Shall I start calling 1080p 2K? Hmmm

    @@DaveThompsonfairlife4all companies try to make people excited by introducing new resolutions, megapixels and frame rates. But in reality what matters the most (in my opinion) is the sensor and the glass you put in front of it. Older high end expensive cinema cameras, (for example an older arri Alexa or Sony F3) don't always shoot in 4k, but have a much more beautiful image compared to 8K smartphone video. That's because of the lenses but also sensor size. And for example Arri is really good with their color science and dynamic range in their sensors. But of course those cameras are much more expensive. But all I am trying to say here is: using resolution is just another way for companies trying to sell their products.

    I just bought a new Panasonic 4K VX980 (2016) ; it's reliable and has the best stabilization, IMHO. It's not overly big and much better to use; I hate vertical smartphone videos; negative ! I still have my smartphone. I also have a real small HC-V380 (Full HD)with x50 optical zoom and a Panasonic HC-X1500.

    The AX53 has balanced optical steadyshot which is a bit different compared to IBIS (in body stabilisation). With balanced optical steadyshot the lens and sensor are mounted in a floating stabilizer. In my opinion it's about the same if not better stabilization than IBIS, but it's not as good as a gimbal or the newer GoPro stabilization.

    Even though I like camcorders, I highly doub it. The reason is, people like things that are easy to use/handle the 90s early 2000 people practical way of seeing things is not the same as for this and they camcocerder current functionality doesnt outweight the one of any of the little cam that are on the market. Stabilization is just not worth it on camcorder pre-production and once you have to take this post-prod it is no longer for the regular people usage as it was in the 90s. in a market where you have really small cameras like DJI Pocket 3, goPro 12, zve-1 people going for this makes it harder. Pro would always complain about and say things like: "I want great quality and equpiment" yet they will pull their iphone to record something on the moment or just choose the higest quality gear when have something planned and a camcorder ain't it.

    I watched a couple of videos and i-phone had better stabilization than these camcorders. Aren't they supposed to have better stabilization than just a phone? Also gopro has better stabilization than both phone and camcorder. So what is the point of using camcorder then ? If i m gonna use just statically ? Mirrorless cameras have better quality for that purpose already.

  • @ImportantTech

    @ImportantTech

    7 ай бұрын

    It depends on which model you use. But the stabilisation of camcorders is most of the time not always better than phones. But the point of a camcorder is the large amount of zoom, smooth zoom, options for external mics and headphones for listening live to the audio, close focussing distance, flip screen. But of course not everyone needs this depending on the shooting situation. Like I said in the video: camcorders aren't perfect and meant for everyone. Phones are also good these days. But I still prefer to use a camcorder

The issue with gopros is that while they are very versatile in terms of environments they can be used in, they are almost unusable for lowlight and don't have any optical zoom, auto or manual focus, or depth of field. I have a GoPro and I like it a lot but it's definitely a b-cam for me.
