maybe you should get a camcorder
Ойын-сауық
i'm not saying you should buy a camcorder...
but i'm also not saying you shouldn't...
Cameras I tested:
Sony Ax-33 (Similar to the FDR AX-43 & 53)
Sony CX240 (Similar to the CX405 & literally every other handycam that has the same body style 🙃)

It's the soft look and indescribable film grain and the old 2000s camera colors that make any clip from these camcorders feel nostalgic

All digital grain is caused by noise. Some people like it
Cameras have honestly gotten too good, to the point of being boring. Nothing captures life better than the dinkiness of an older camera. The shots of you going around town with friends are so much more fun and life like than professional grade shots of the same thing. This makes me want to get a super 8.

literally the only reason i love camcorders over everything is because of the zoom function. You could either snap that zoom or you could slowllllyyyyy zoom in and I just love having that control. its a technique i use in so many of my edits

Vibes are real. Looking back at the past 2 decades of my camcorder/camera history, as the resolution, stability and low light performance increased, we lost something far more important. Ease of use, so easy that i can pass it to whomever im with and they intuitively know how to use it, autofocus that just works... I swear my digital hi8 camcorder had better autofocus then my Panasonic S5... We had it good.

I dunno, if you're going for "vibes", better pick up the oldest camera you can possibly get, because most of this footage in this video looks like a shitty phone footage. I think some old digicam would work better if you're going for some vintage aesthetic. It's like film emulation, when people are afraid to go all in on selling the film look with proper grain, texture and various imperfections, it doesn't look good. Otherwise... You want ease of use? You've got a smartphone in your pocket) lol

Vibes are a really underrated camera metric people should really give more weight too when buying gear. That being said the AX-33 has a lot better dynamic range than the CX240 but the CX240 has a ghosting and chromatic aberration wide open that does give it a certain 00s home movie aesthetic

thanks for making a video like this- this helped inspire me to settle with one of these cameras that are easier to handle and more fun to use instead of investing in a super high quality canon that might be difficult to learn on.

Dude… you have a great style (and “vibe”). Long time ax53 owner and camcorder fan. New sub!
I've been working on digital transfers of my 8mm camcorder tapes from my childhood for a couple upcoming youtube videos of my own, so that along with seeing this resurgence in camcorder videography is absolutely inspiring me to get one once my wife and I have kids. Even to burn some blu rays of the footage so they don't get lost in cloud storage or external hard drives. Thanks for inspiring me further!
This is such an awesome video!! Amazing edits, and great thoughts and insights! I've been wanting to buy a nice mirrorless camera for videoing memories for a while now. I'm going on a relatively long trip in 2 days and this has just opened my eyes because I have that exact 1080p camcorder and haven't used it for some years. Being in film school made me use other stuff and relegated that cam to a mistake on my part (it costed me many more hundred bucks because I bought it brand new) but seeing this has reminded me that I could still give it many uses.
Great video, love old camcorders as there so easy to use and build purely for what it is unlike cameras designed for shooting photos. Have many cameras like gh5 and dji action and so on but always go back to shooting video with camcorders that tends to be more pleasing to the eye rather than over sharpness and exposed of modern cameras. Great video mate

Hi I saw your videos they are all amazing. Would you mind if I add more on your videos so that your business grow exponentially!
How did you get the cx240s video to look like that? Did you add any editing or color grading to the footage or does it look like that when it’s straight footage?
I bought a Vixia HF G40 refurbished from Canon and save a ton of money and it came with the standard warranty. It included all of the accessories that you would expect to find in the box of a brand new camcorder. I bought so many refurbished equipment from Canon over the years and saved lots of money and never had an issue with any of their refurbished camcorders, DSLR, mirrorless cameras, EF/RF lenses. Get one.
this was such a great video omgggg
love the comparison ! (what's the song for the last part at 6:03 ?)
Was there any specific settings you used on the cx240, or did you just open it and start recording? It has that retro look a little, and I wanted that look. Great video btw, I bought the cx240 because of this vid!!
I think you can see the difference in picture quality in the 4k VS 1080p because of the filter affect it has on the video, almost like water color painting on the sides of objects makes it look like a cheap Fiji film camera sometimes But for price and portability I do like the smaller form factor of the 1080p one 😊
This kind of just popped up in my recommended and I’m not sure why, but I’m glad it did. i have a sony handycam hdr cx 330 but whenever i try to import the video/photo files to my laptop i have massive drops in photo quality and frame rate as compared to when im viewing on the camcorder itself (i get that it's gonna look different from the tiny display compared to my 14in laptop screen but still). for example whenever i record in 1080p and 60fps, once imported to my laptop it's shown in 720p at 27-28fps. ive tested w other cameras and they work fine when importing files so im wondering how do you import your files from your cx240 to your pc?

Actually, I have that Sony AX33 camera and it is a great camera, but I have to say quite bad if you want to make videos in dark place. Still, you can make it spooky with a night vision setting.
what eyepiece rubber attachment did you put on the ax53?
VX1 is a great bit of kit. A camera literally made for recording videos! And it doesn't overheat and shutdown after 30 minutes. Dont follow the perceived meta 🤘🏼
how's the battery life of each? did you also notice some overheating in those cameras? thank you!
@spencertorok

Overheating isn't really an issue with camcorders, because they are purpose built for long recordings. Battery life on both are really, even for the smallest batteries
I got myself an AX100 used for a very good price (now an 10 years old video camera). The AX33 is good too, even better the AX43. I would recommend the AX53 these days when available for a good price. I use these cameras for skateboarding, too, by the way. The AX100 for (low-light) still shots and an AX53 for rolling shots. Those deliver an amazing quality. It is really they way to go when you want quality and at the same time comfort. It's so much hazzle with DSLRs. The CX240 is not very good, tho. Blurry and very prone to image noise.
What’s your thoughts on the iPhone 15 pro being able to shoot in 4k 60 fps ProRes Log, and able to film directly onto a ssd plugged into the usb c 3.0. Seems like that beats both cameras in stats and size and not loosing footage to the camera roll

hello!!!! do you have the link to the camera by any chance?? can´t find it!
I have an AX53 and I love how versatile it is, especially the image stabilisation and zoom range (26.8 to 536mm). I do wish it could shoot log and had a higher dynamic range (and maybe more depth of field) but even without that it's pretty great. I do want to get a ZV-E1 eventually but I'm pretty sure I'll keep the AX53 around as a b-cam for the zoom range. Like carrying a telephoto lens except it's its own camera. I'm generally surprised by how few KZreadrs use camcorders, especially in the vlogging space and other non-filmmaking spaces since they're much more convenient for point and shoot than a handheld mirrorless and some of them do have pretty great image quality.

I too have an Ax53 that is OK in auto mode but is limited in manual settings unfortunately, although it's not a bad "point n shoot" camera. I also have a PanasonicHC-X2000 to use if I want full control, but is bigger and not quite so easy to use hand held.
