Sony’s FULL FRAME Handycam Nobody Cared About

My favorite cameras of all time are old school Sony Handycams. I grew up making home movies with them, and I pretty much owe my filmmaking obsession to those early years. But times have changed and now I'm making videos with DSLR shaped cameras, which have their pros and cons. But what would happen if we took the ergonomics of retro camcorders and smashed them together with the powerful specs of modern cameras? Well today, we just might find out in the Retro Review of the Sony NEX VG 900 full frame handycam.

Please do one on the VG-30 next, I remember being interested in these cameras cause of how interesting & amazing the idea is. Like imagine if they re-released these but with better video specs, better autofocus & better for content creators than the mirrorless cameras we have now (*Cough* Sony ZV-E10 *Cough*)

If only there was a modern 4K version similar to this. It'd be perfect for shooting weddings. FX3 and FX30 are awesome, but that small camcorder design... just so nice to work with.

I'd genuinely buy the absolute shit out of a line of Sony HVR-A1E size cameras that shoot to SD card instead of tape. I don't even care about 4K, 1080p would be nice, 422p would be bloody awesome, but light weight - even lighter than an A1E - and solid construction.

This camera represents the old Sony era when they protected their XDCAM / CineAlta line of cameras so they crippled it with XAVC HD low bitrate codec. After this camera then came the A7S and the rest was history!

I recently read an article that stated that if you use a converter to use F-mount lenses you can get 4K out of this camera. The reason the article stated is because the E-mount lenses, like the one that came with the camera, do not use the entire chip, where the E-mount lenses do. I have this camera for 11 years and it still works great... if I can get 4K out of this camera I'll use it for another 10 years.

some of me earliest shoots for clients during film school were shot with this camera. The specs I needed were a NO FUSS camera, long record times, and ability to use lens...and yes like he says, going hand held was a pain because it WAS VERY top heavy. As hard as I tried to stabilize, all my shots seem to dip a little (or a lot)

Yup, like you said, it has the same problem as the Sony A7 full frame camera. Great big sensor, but not enough processing power to do a full sensor readout and scale it down to 1080p - instead it does Line Skipping which leads to nasty moire and aliasing on video footage. Only later generation Sony cameras started doing full sensor readout. Which is, interestingly, something that the Nokia 808 PureView did right from the start. And that was a frikkin' smartphone camera running on Symbian.

The Halo music at the end got me tearing up 😭 Also great video! I got to use this camera for a bit back when it released and I was blown away at the time, but it was quickly ignored with the Mirrorless boom only getting crazier. I'd love Sony to revisit this format. An A7S3 in this body style with some other creature comforts would be killer.

Cheers!! Thank you for the share because that is still a gem

I wanted this camera so bad when it came out. I just couldn't swing it at the time. I think it was one of the very first E-Mount video cameras. I ended up getting the FS100 (which I loved--and still have) and then the FS700 (didn't love it as much, even though it was technically a better camera than the FS100). I've been all in on Sony for a while.

I would love one of these cameras. Sony actually made 3 models before the vg900 which you probably seen when looking into the vg900. They were the vg10, vg20, and vg30. These did not have full frame sensors and I think the vg30 was the only one to feature a rocker power zoom. I was able to get my hands on a vg10 which actually came out in 2010. It was as still kind of expensive and the one I got the plastic was cracked where the tripod threads are. And it didn’t even come with the 18-200 lens. The vg10’s lcd screen wasn’t fully articulating either. So it only rotated 180 degrees. So there was no way to flip the screen around to see yourself. And in my opinion trying to hold the camera either dad cam style or even by the handle while also trying to manually zoom was super awkward and hard to do. Along with like what you said it’s super nose heavy so trying to counter the weight while also trying to zoom really starts to make your wrist hurt. But over all I did like the footage that came out of it😊

Great Video! So I bought this VG900 when it first came out. I LOVED it! Because there was nothing like it. And I fell in love with the Full frame images. I championed it and constantly had to defend it! (my reviews on Amazon) I used it for filming conferences and then bought another one for a 2 camera setup. I spoke to Sony Technicians quite a few times with issues early on, and asked about updates... Then one day, the Tech said , "I can't tell you much, but we're not updating it because we might have something else coming." Well that was the Sony A7. which came out at the Electronics show, and all the updates, they threw into that. and kicked the VG900 to the curb! Needless to say, I was pretty bummed. I got hooked on the viewfinder. and they don't have those on the cinema cameras at the moment. I've since bought A7's... But it's not the same. Hoping one the the cinema cams comes out with a viewfinder... Instead of just being a brick. Oh, And Also the VG900 has very little (if any) Rolling shutter!! Thanks!

The 900's rolling shutter, yuuuuup, considerably better performance then any of the A7 family that followed, but not quite as good as the Pentax and Nikon bodies that used Sony sensors at the time - K-01 and K-5 especially got better performance in that regard. First A7s was nearly as bad as the original BMD Pocket camera for shutter skew and wobble - rigs only, never handheld.

I REALLY WISH Sony would bring this line back. I'd instantly buy them if they released a 4K/upgraded model. Name me another camera that had interchangeable lenses, EXCELLENT all day battery life (NP-FV100 batts were the BEST!) and THREE RECORD buttons! From any angle you could shoot with this camera...AND WAS NOT HEAVY! (The ergonomics was amazing on the wrists). Using a DSLR to shoot video (which is pretty much what most people use them for) is insanity. Carpel hell. The VG series cameras were AMAZING for all day shooting and the ability to slap on prime lenses? Killer feature.

It doesn't have a very beautiful COLOR & LIGHT result, which I compensate for in the editing using Color Match resources with images from other better cams. I am and will still be happy with her ! ❤

This camera helped us starting our Video Production Company in 2021! Yes, you read right. The regular Customer did not notice any difference between modern cams. For Web-Work HD fully worked. FF bokeh and fantastic ritch colors with standard profile and e-mount interchangeable lenses and even 24p mode. The only thing i could complain is as you mentioned the moire patterns at straight lines in video mode. But as you also said it makes amazingest photos 24mp FF, no moire. It is the opposit of a Hybrid cam making stunning video. A Camcorder making stunning Photos 😄 I still use it primariliy for photos now. If sony had brought out a new version in 4K stabalized & new autofocus, we‘d have bought it instantly. Congrats to this really entertaining video! 😊👍

The Sony apsc vg-20/30 had better images. The 900 was actually a step backward even though it was FF. I picked up a good VG20 for next to nothing and love it. And that mic is still awesome for stereo sound. Yeah, it's a little bulky but it is great fun to use and you get an awesome Spielberg vibe when shooting with it. I've rigged mine out with a cage, monitor, and wireless mic input for when I don't want all that great surround sound. Don't get me wrong, the A6700 and FX30 are much better but I don't NEED them, much less their FF bigger brothers (and related price tags!)

I remember some KZreadrs were using it when it came out. But what I think killed it was 4 fold. The Handycam format was dying, it was expensive, and Canon was killing it with their video enabled cheaper DSLRs, even if they weren't full frame. 2012 was about the year KZreadrs switched from webcams to DSLRs. Finally, Sony themselves were starting to make waves with their own mirrorless line.

I own the vg20 since it was released and bought a second hand vg30 a few years after its release. I've always wanted to put my hands on a vg900 but the price point new or used keeped it out of my reach at first and my interest later. Nowadays I still use the vg20 as a beauty cam and the vg30 as a OCR cam for live event streaming setups.

As a fellow who worked at Sony retail, a corporate rep explained it, it was all about the glass. See when this camera came out it was using Sony's first-generation e-mount series that was originally created for the NEX series, those lenses were originally designed for micro 4/3rd frame NEX 3/5N cameras. However all the full-frame E-Mounts were only being made for Alpha series cameras, so they would have to make a third set of non-Alpha full-frame NEX series lenses just to be used for this one model of camera. Sony decided that the extra expense was clearly not worth it, however, the tech for this camera was cannibalized to make the Sony a7 which came out the next year. Yes, this camera died so that a full-frame a7 could be born.

This thing also demonstrates how important image processors are. That sensor in there is actually very good in stills. But in video it had to probably line-skip or pixel-bin a ton of that original information and thus creating those ugly artefacts and hampering the dynamic range and resolution just to achieve a normal HD video at a playable frame rate. Now most of Sonys alpha and FX cameras over-sample their large resolution into a nice 4K image that’s so detailed and crisp. Even at high frame rates in a lot of cases. Cuz the image processors can handle the information the sensors spit out.

Have you tried exporting to an external recorder? Markus Rothkrans said something about the bit rate being crippled but that the mini-dvi port is not.

So! When I was on the search for an hd camera. I ended up getting the vg20. Sadly only a few month later this camera came out. I’m so sad I never got one and also sad that they still cost way too much. If I ever see one go for 4-500 I will buy it. Crk. But it was kinda good because I ended up investing in a vx1000 and I have own maybe 10 vx’s since then.

I got to play with one of these once, also the APS-C EA50. It was a great concept, but yeah, really lacking in the codec department.

The most convenient cameras. I had NEX-VG20 and NEX-VG30. I wanted NEX-VG900, but it was too expensive for me. I also had a NEX-7 for the gimbal when they started showing up. Now I have a NEX-FS700R with Atomos Inferno, and several ZV-1, ZV-E10 and a pair of NEX-5n, which I bought out of nostalgia.

Yo does anybody know any budget recorder to directly record the footage from hi8 camera like the on in the beggining of the video? Bonus points if its portable, and if it can start/stop record at the same time as the camera, thanks in advance :D

    In August.23.1990, I had Sony CCD -FX700e cost me AED4150 ($2400, 1993). I dreamed about Sony 3CCD VX3 1993, but it cost about $3000 ($6390 in 2023). Finally, In 2015 I bought it for about $500 refurbished.

For today you should really take into account of the Gimbal revolution. If shoot handheld, as a "handycam", gimbals makes huge difference. It's interesting that the gimbal makers like DJI didn't make something that "holds" like a handycam, I feel this is a great "ergonomic" way to hold a camera though... Another thing is about APS-C, in the video world there's just no need. The whole pro industry lives off APS-C and they are perfectly fine. We don't complain feature movies or TV or Netflix videos "low image quality" is the best evidence of that, most of them are shot actually on a crop sensor. Actually full frame is the new kid on that scene. Now there are a lot of cinema lenses are built around the crop sensor and when you go full frame the choices actually becomes limited. There's just no real benefit if they shoot the same resolution, even for wider FOV, just get a wider lens, there're tons in the APS-C spec with smaller mm numbers and much cheaper price. The only thing that makes a sense to go full frame is the pursuit for higher resolution. The A7r2 introduced an 8K sensor, but it just lacks the processing power to do the 8K video. It took years until now the processing power seems caught up. The 6K and 8K probably is where full frame makes sense. Anyway it's just after the investigation of full-frame vs aps-c, my conclusion is pros know it better, full-frame is not necessary.

The world wasn’t ready for something like an FX3 is now, but a few engineers did see that sticking a large sensor on something that records video can be cool. (Also, Super35 is adequate for cinematography. But yeah since larger sensors have become more affordable to make, and image processors have become vastly more efficient and powerful, it’s now a thing. (I’d still say that shallow depth of field in video is over-used a lot, but yeah))
