Why I started Writing by hand ~ Writing Vlog ~ AuthorTube

Ойын-сауық

In an attempt to be more productive, I began writing by hand and it turns out it has been going really well!
I am currently working on a Supernatural Fantasy Trilogy (maybe 2 trilogies??) And this series follows my process trying to figure out what exactly the story line is and how I am going to get there!

I also love how satisfying it is to go through all the handwritten pages. There's just something about it for me that's so satisfying... :)

I love writing by hand. My brain connects to the story a lot better when I write it out. My prose ends up far more poetic and I love it.

I love this! I wrote 7 full length novels by hand as a teenager and noticed that I write wayyyyy more slowly and less creatively since I started typing. I think it’s time to go back❤️❤️❤️

I write my first drafts by hand. It's slower than typing, but I remember better what's going on. I don't think my handwriting is horrible, but it's not pretty unless I write slowly

I just started working fulltime. So because of that I bought a large notebook and I've been handwriting my short story by hand. I didn't want to have to bring my heavy laptop, and then worry that someone might try to steal it from my locker. Writing by hand has been very nostalgic for me. When I first started writing I use to write in any notebook I could, but I stopped once I got a computer. It's been so long since I've written by hand, and my hand tends to hurt after writing, but I'll get used to writing by hand again.

Have you ever seen Tolkien's handwriting? The man's penmanship is as legendary as his fiction, it even looks like an elven version of the written English language! Look up scans of his response letters to various fans. It's all good stuff! And I agree, we need to bring back reading and writing. Technology can only go so far before it completely resets (like civilization itself). The one true thing that has stood the test of time is the art of scribing. Peace!

So glad I found your video! I just recently started handwriting a story after years of feeling stuck and incapable of writing because I was forcing myself to write on a computer. As you said, the whole handwriting process is just much more appealing to my creativity, and the words I write are of higher quality than the ones I get from writing on a computer. It does take me longer to write by hand and I don't produce as many words, but the process of actually writing is easier and since the words are better quality, it does indeed affect productivity AND my mood, because I come out of it feeling like a decent writer, as opposed to pure shit. I do really enjoy the whole "editing" aspect of transferring the words from paper to a computer. I am much more comfortable editing on a computer than drafting, and as you said, I have a better grasp of what flows or not, and I can add in bits I knew were missing when I'm typing it all on the computer. I do prefer typing though, I like the words to be accurate, I haven't found a speech-to-text app I like enough to replace my own hands yet. Lastly, I feel like I get a better result overall after a few rounds of polishing on the computer. I do appreciate editing as I go as opposed to only editing after finishing the whole story because I NEVER actually finished anything in almost 30 years on this earth (academic papers and poetry don't count in this case). If I edit as I go I get to have a better quality and polished piece, which helps boost my confidence as a writer, since I can't help but compare my own work with the books I read. Anyway, sorry for the giant comment. I've been looking up other writers who handwrite on youtube to back up my decision of handwriting my stories, and your video really helped! edit: as for the handwriting itself, it's actually better than I expected it to come out! I still don't like it, but it's good practice.

I often write my notes for novels by hand. But by the time I start drafting, I type. I have tried drafting a story or two by hand this past year. As a child I wrote all my stories by hand before I had a computer and I'd love to return to that.

You story sounds so intriguing... There are so many pros to handwriting, then transcribing, but my handwriting is way too terrible to write by hand completely- my brain goes too fast for my hand. But I do enjoy handwriting sometimes, when I want to be a bit more casual about writing or when I need to plan- handwriting removes the pressure.

I write in a hybrid format. Let's say I started with a scene list. I would number every scene. Then I would go into each scene, and make a list of beats or events happening. I number all of those. (So it would look like, scene 8, block 2) You could string together that as a zero draft, but normally my drafts are very clean. I pull it up onto my document on PC, and I write out each of the beats, copying and pasting each one, and expanding it by a set number of sentences. That becomes my first draft, since the other was more of a script format. Then I do one more pass with my editing and linguistics eye, and I'm done with the scene. This freedom allows me to write from any point in the story that I want without disturbing any other part or having scenes that don't fall into place. It gives me a bird's eye view that an outline doesn't before I ever put words on a page

I haven’t hand written a story for a few years but the idea of it does give me a nostalgic feel. Maybe I’ll give it a go with a short story! (Because I know my hand will cramp up pretty fast 😂) I do however write in my journal, which is sporadic at best but it’s always a lovely feeling; getting those words down in a book or piece of physical paper that I can touch or ball it up and throw at someone (very useful) Your handwriting is gorgeous, if it was worse before maybe you could show us a comparison! I’d love to see how much it helps to write by hand every day. Thank you for the video, looking forward to the next!

My handwriting is awful both in Russian and English 😅😅😅 That's why I don't quite like handwriting instead of typing, it takes so much time BUT it's amazing for writing the first drafts. I'm a perfectionist and I got used to editing and writing at the same time so I usually end up rewriting the first chapter a thousand times and not advancing the plot any further. When you handwrite, your space is limited so you cannot edit too much and focus more on the story itself. You can edit it later, when you type it.

One of the best things, I find, about writing by hand is that I can't write as fast as I think so my words are better chosen than what I would have typed. But this is the thing with tips, we all know what works for us as individuals as we are all different

how did you know I was about to place a RedBubble order? (because I highkey need some of those gorgeous stickers, they're fantastic!) I have really fallen in love with handwriting too. I started journaling every day to purge and process my emotions, but I've also found that it's been helping me in my massive writing slump! I handwrite my outline (as much of an outline as a habitual pantser does) and it feels so much less restrictive. I do not think my hand could manage handwriting an entire novel though, holy crow. I'm left-handed and everything gets smudged if I go too fast and I think it would be a disaster with novel writing for me
