Writing By Hand // Writing Vlog

So I chose to take a break from the laptop screen and go back to the pen and paper, it was great. Though my hand, like I said many times in the video, hurts.
It was a very relaxing day and is definitely something I want to do more often.

Hmm, very interesting video I gotta admit! I personally write by hand almost always. Then I clean the first version on my laptop. And I just love writing "the old way" I feel like I have more control over the emotions or the setting in the scene just by changing my handwriting and it's so lovely to go back and see the process! Tho I must say it is time-consuming and yes, one hand will be sacrificed haha. but amazing video!!

Nice to see this example !!!! Indeed there are pros and cons to both methods. A big factor often being the level of proficiency one has as an typists. Some of us are barely functional whereas others are quite fast. Writing by hand can provide the immediate flow of ideas (brain dump) while some others may suffer from perfection paralysis as seeing their type written output (showing down creation). Like all things it is unique unto the individual.

I usually outline on pen a paper and then flesh it out on my laptop. I dont remember when i started doing that

I'm the opposite. Handwriting is psychologically way easier for me than typing. Blue light, man.

I do have a bit of an idea for writing by hand is to maybe use a pencil before correcting by pen.

Oooo I do like that idea, I’ve been writing a lot by hand recently so I’m definitely going to put this into practice! Thanks for the advice 🧡

Wow, six hours! That's what I call dedication. I wish I could handwrite like that. I just scribble, really. I have to wear a brace sometimes due to wrist pain. Writing by hand is lovely sometimes but kudos to the greats for wiring entire novels by hand. Great video.

Thanks for such a nice comment! But it wasn’t a full novel by hand 😅 I definitely wouldn’t be able to do that it would kill me!

Pre-computers, I used to write by hand before typing this up. Much later, I'd go through the typed version, revise it, then retype. Apart from the revision stage, I began doing this while at university. I didn't have time to revise my essays before handing them in. Now I write straight onto computer or Alphasmart Neo. I'll then put the first draft on one of my ereaders and make notes for revision. More revision is done in Word. If you're going to write extensively by hand, maybe consider a really nice fountain pen and nice paper. You seem to have a British accent. Here in the UK black cats are lucky, and having one cross your path is a sign of good luck. A crow, on the other hand . . . Maybe you could consider an Alphasmart Neo if distraction free is your priority. You can buy them secondhand on ebay. They used to be quite cheap, but they've gone up to around £50 plus package and postage.

This is brilliant thank you, yes I’m based in the uk too and so many online drafts on word and now scrivener. I used writing by hand for the lack of distractions but also so I could get into a good habit of grabbing anything close and writing when the mood hit me. I’ll definitely look in to Alphasmart Neo sounds like something I definitely need! 💛

Pat Conroy never learned to type. :) He hires typists. Heh. I really should hire a typist for that first transcription. I generally write longhand first. It's just faster and more focused and you can do it anywhere. You don't write longhand. That's going to slow you down and is more likely to lead to hand cramping.

My best advice is to watch as many fights similar to the one you’re trying to describe and go from there. I find that when writing a scene like this it’s best to be as minimal as possible, describe the setting then only write about specific things you want the reader to know otherwise it gets confusing. Besides when I’m reading a good fight scenario I find myself filling in the blanks.
