I had gone to carbon shoes for a summer and loved having the faster splits in training but in the end I stopped and run only in the taper in my carbon racers… With this approach I’ve hit so many more PBs. I’m not as quick as you but now that you’re on to my secret no chance of catching you.. Also I’ve added in some zero drop shoes for one run a week and that is usually a trail run, I found that helps too.

This is exactly it. I have said it over, over and over. Apparently not in any place where people see it. The best approach to training and race day times is to save the carbons for your last two weeks before a race. This will give your body time to adjust to the race day set up and pace. Glad to see you taking up this approach. As you said... put in the work now, enjoy the benefits later!

carbon takes a lot of strain off your lower leg muscles and ligaments which means you're more fresh the next day but also impedes growth and strength development in those ligaments. i thikn it's better longterm to keep carbon for races. i like using the NB1400v6 on the track because it's a super simple flat but they're discontinued. the hoka mach 5 you're using is probably too heavy for a track session but i recommend something like the takumi sen. it doesn't have a carbon plate and is lightweight enough for a fast track session. good middleground between carbon and a low-cushion flat

IMO and experience, going from carbon fiber-based shoes to Hokas is like going from the most responsive side to the least responsive side of the spectrum. Hokas have bounce, but my Cliftons were way less responsive from heel-to-toe. A mid-point standard construction brand like Brooks might be what you’re looking for (I use the Adrenalines)

I know you're asking LS and not me, but I thought I'd weigh in on this.. I run both directions, I'm left-handed and left foot Dominant. Clockwise is easier for me to achieve pace targets. But running both directions balances the force put through both sides equally so I try to ensure I stay balanced, help avoid injury. It also reminds me to push through my legs consistently on corners 💪💪
