The staging of Lex's rooftop conversation with Superman is brilliant; Superman flies high over Lex threatening to destroy him with ease, then Superman stands face to face with Lex as he reveals he knows Superman to be Clark Kent. Then, finally, Superman is on his knees, with Luthor towering over him, in full command. Excellent scene that demonstrates his power.

Wasted potential film. Has he potential to be he greatest superhero film ever. It had the blue print. Plot was great Music was great Lex Luther plan great 3 dimensional character Masterclass symbolism But it failed in execution snd portrayal of these ideas and concepts. And didn’t get superman right. Regardless the film gets too much hate But I guess this is what happens when you take the two most iconic superheroes ever and it’s not a masterpiece

Couldn't agree more. I also thought this Lex in particular was a fantastic villain. Unlike past cinematic interpretations, which were fine for the sort of Superman movies they were in, this Lex was actually fairly terrifying, because they focused on all of his strengths (ties with government, scientific genius, vast knowledge of philosophy, business tact, and incomparable wealth) while showing the horrors his weakness can cause (ego-mania/mental illness). He came across as a truly dangerous, yet realistic villain, given our current societal climate. He is a sort of villain that could exist in our own reality. Like an Elon Musk of today who is secretly going mad. And this Lex really did have that theatrical villain element to him, making me think of him in one of these classical villains from Greek or Shakespearean mythology. Zack Snyder was genius to come up with this version IMO.

This was by far the best Jessie Eisenberg's acting performance, I still don't understand what people mean by saying that Zack Snyder is not good at storytelling....maybe they think all stories have to be straightforward... everything needs to be logical...even when in real life sometimes people make their decisions without thinking based on their emotions...by the way great vid

UltraOneGaming Are you crazy? This is exactly why I dislike the current DC fan base, it doesn't have room for objective opinion. I love the Ultimate edition of Batman v Superman and I am of the party that understood Lex Luthor's role and Eisenberg's portrayal of him in the movie but best performance to date? Not even close. You along with many others of this new fan base are overly sensitive and defensive, so instead of saying "I personally loved his performance" "He was my favorite character in the movie" etc. You speak in absolutes like "This was Eisenberg's greatest performance to date" or "This is one of the greatest movies of all time" because you believe it's defending DC, it's not. There's two separate mediums here comics and movies, when it comes to movies look no further than his performances in Louder than bombs, The double and the Social network if you want to see some of his greatest acting performances but since you are a fan of this property you proclaim this without analysis of his other performances which you most likely have not watched.

I like how Luthor sees himself as a hero for humanity. Luthor had a bad upbringing, and he focuses on how to make humanity better. He sees an alien coming to Earth as bad for humanity, and not only wants to kill it, but ruin its reputation. Lex sees himself as the leader of humanity, and considers his intellect a superpower. He thinks that knowledge is power, but that changes once someone more powerful, but less smart comes into the picture. He sees himself as leader of the human race, and Superman as an evil oppressor of humanity. Lex thinks that Superman’s actions are just a trick to get humanity to let him have a position of power. Luthor sees Superman as a danger- a nuclear bomb about to explode. Lex creates a plan to kill Superman by either tricking Batman into doing it, or having his creation Doomsday do it. If Batman kills Superman, Luthor proves that Superman isn’t good enough to save the humans. If Doomsday does it, then Lex can kill Doomsday and look like humanity’s leader.

I absolutely adored Eisenberg's take on Lex Luthor, at first I wasn't so keen or rather surprised about his casting, but when the movie came out I really loved what I saw this Lex is right from the comics everything from the Mad Scientist aspect, to Business Major and his deep dialogue to his insanity and obssesion with Superman and power Jesse's Luthor is layered, cold, decieving and manipulative and I absolutely dug it! He's still being developed for growth.

excellent points! this Lex is not the suave power suit we're used to seeing, but i'm oddly drawn to this iteration. he's modernized to fit today's culture and still an antithesis of his Superman, and his actions are driven by deep psychological motivation rather than just straight-up megalomania. his machinations are an extensive long-game, manipulating the whole board so every piece is exactly where he wanted it, with no plot hole or contrived plot device. i have to give so much credit to Chris Terrio for writing this Lex's genius, issues, and witty but inappropriate humor. looking forward to more of DCEU Lex.

I think a lot of the criticism Jesse Lex got I think doesn't have to do with a bad performance. As a performance, it was completely believable for this character. I never not once was throw out or didn't buy into the performance. I think people had issue because of the choice of performance. The taste in personality. I think a lot of people hated the personality rather that judged how well a performance was given. People didn't want Lex as this meek, twitchy, unhinged guy but you really buy into it every step of the way. You believe him on that rooftop. You believe him control Superman. It was very very powerful performance from essienberg. Can not be understated. And the music. Don't even get me started on the music. Really makes the movie come rushing in.

I totally agree with you about Lex, He is my favorite villain in a superhero movie, his actions have big effects in the universe and it has motive and purpose in the main plot of BvS, his vision of a world where people should be warned on the problem of metahumans and Superman. His version of Lex is inspired by Superman Birthright and Death of Superman storyline, that's very unique about Jesse's version that is accurate and up-to-date with today's world where people like Lex can exist again instead resorting to the original plan of “I will bring down Superman just because I want land in Australia” Thanks for an amazing video and that Mozart part blew my mind how eerily similar they are.

An eerie feeling came over me, while watching “BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE” recently, Remember the scene in which the Capitol Building exploded following Superman’s arrival? Watching that scene reminded me of the chaos and violence at the Capitol Building back on January 6. There had been no explosion that day, but I could not help feeling very uneasy while watching this scene from the movie and recalling what really happened two months ago at the same time.

GREAT VIDEO!!! Thank you for making this series, Rebecca. I'm loving every video. They're challenging and inspiring me. I'll add my thoughts on Lex Lex Luthor is the most interesting in the relationship to his father, because he doesn’t have a redemption arc like Clark and Bruce. Lex reveals that he is an orphan (drawing parallels to Bruce) and that he hasn’t re-arranged his father’s office, choosing to keep his father around - perhaps because he’s trying to prove something to his father, to himself, or because he revels in the pain as a private contrition. Lex conveys quite a bit about his father: Lex Sr was raised in poverty, couldn’t afford books growing up, came to America, formed his own company and realized the American dream. He was self-aggrandizing, placing his first name in the corporate trademark and branding his son after himself. Lex also tells of his childhood abuse, expressing resentment that no “man from the sky came to save him” from his father’s “fists and abominations”. Despite his private atrocities, it can be surmised that Lex Sr was respected and had a faultless public face. That illusion is something Lex models himself after. When the “man from the sky” has come in Superman, Lex hates him because he never came when he needed him. He has the existential crisis of feeling helpless and powerlessness again, the last time Lex felt this was under the abuse of his father. To Lex, Superman has to be a monster and a fraud just like his father was. Lex frames his intentions with Promethean justifications and rationalizes what he’s doing is for the good of mankind. He wants the public to see with their eyes so they are not taken in by frauds. He wants the meta-humans to know they’re corruptible and can be discovered, so they don’t take Superman’s place. With those goals in mind, he plans for months to corrupt and destroy Superman’s halo. Lex pursues the path to power that he knows through knowledge. In the two years since Superman’s arrival, Lex pursued intensive research and information, discovering the other meta-humans, learning the truth behind Bruce and Clark and coming to understand their psychologies; knowing how “you let your family die” lands or how to hold their hearts hostage. One of Lex’s machinations is the arrangement of the titular fight with Batman, who for Lex represents his father. When their confrontation fails, Lex seeks further to destroy the “man from the sky” by creating an abomination. This is his ultimate conversion to his father’s legacy. When his abomination, Doomsday, turns against him to strike him with his fist, this time the man from the sky is there to save him. The expectation is for this moment to trigger Lex and act as a catalyst in his redemption, as was seen earlier with Batman. Lex doesn’t address this moment, choosing to remain trapped in the loop of his father’s shadow and seeking an even greater power in the alien Steppenwolf. At the end of the film, Lex is shaved in prison, making his signature baldness a sign of a character shift, and not just a new look. The painting in his office that personified his worldview is shown upside-down, showing that he hasn’t come to terms with his childhood and he is still abused in his mind.

This Luthor I believe borrows a bit from Fredrich Nietzche, the philosopher who first developed the concept of the Ubermensch or the Superman. You can see it peppered throughout the story such as when Luthor says 'the God is Dead', this is a reference to the Madman. In this Nietzche does not mean a literal sense that God is dead, but rather the idea of God as a source of moral value is no more. This is interesting because Nietzche developed the idea of Ubermensch as a means for humanity to look inside themselves rather than to supernatural or divine forces for salvation, to conquer their own nihilism, and make themselves their own mythical hero. And in an odd way that is what Lex Luthor has been about for most of his comic history. In the comics Luthor believes superheroes are a detriment to society because they halt human advancement, in the same sense Nietzche would have believed faith in the Christian God was a detriment to society.

Thanks, and really if one were to a little further in finding evidence of Nietzche, one could say that not only is Luthor in BvS the "Madman" (fitting as in the Ultimate Edition he is sent to Arkham Asylum) he is also the Last Man, the antitheses of the Superman. The Last Man is only concerned with its self comfort and cannot create anything beyond itself. Yes one could argue that Luthor created Doomsday but the creature was not an advancement. It could do nothing but destroy and that is where Luthor's status of the Last Man comes into play. All he can create are material things, he cannot make something greater of himself, and he only creates to comfort his Ego. Superman truly fits more into the role of the moral Ubermensch than Luthor. Nietzche developed the idea of the Superman not out of immorality but a show of ultimate morality, a triumph of all human faults. In this movie Superman struggles with his faults as a sentient being, his doubts, his fears, and even his anger, and truly becomes the Superman when he sacrifices himself to Doomsday, making a choice of ultimate morality. And this is true even in the comics which feature Superman overcoming advancing himself to a point where he becomes equivalent to a god as shown in Grant Morrison's One Million story arch and once more fitting with Nietzche who continue from 'God is Dead' wrote, and keep in mind I'm paraphrasing, 'God is Dead shall men now become gods'. In this sense Superman is a man who became the perfect being, as shown in One Million, and became God.

Interestingly enough, Mozart's Requiem was used during the montage at the end of the third season of Smallville, where a part of said montage portrayed Lionel Luthor, while having his head shaved in prison, as having planned the assassination of Lex and Chloe, which is a nice parallel of to your analysis of Lex's theme in BvS. I'd really geek out if Snyder and Zimmer took the inspiration from the scene, not just from Mozart.

+duckmilkprod Also, I just remembered that Snyder actually used the same piece in Watchmen just as Nite Owl and Silk Spectre leaves Ozymandias's secret base at the end of the movie, which is another connection since Ozymandias was like a Lex Luthor-type character whose manipulation of the world caused millions of deaths. I now fully believe your conclusion that the resemblance between Lex's theme and Mozart's Requiem was fully intentional.

I think Jesse Eisenberg is the best film adaptation of Lex to date, but that doesn't say too much when Spacey and Hackman were basically playing bumbling mustache-twirlers with no motivation. Jesse Eisenberg was overall good but flawed IMO as Lex. I like the idea of making him twitchy and mentally unstable, but I wish that he progressed more into it. He seemed twitchy and a bit unstable to me right from the get go, which did occasionally get grating for me. I was hoping that they might introduce him as cool and confident and have him slowly progress into the Luthor we saw in BvS, descending deeper and deeper into a visible madness. That way, I think those brilliantly acted scenes in the end would have had even more impact, especially with critics. But, when you look at it, he was scary when he had to be, he was unsuspecting as a villain to the people around him, he was unpredictable, he had great chemistry with the other actors, he was convincingly brilliant and he pulled off the rooftop scene and the "Your Doomsday" scene FLAWLESSLY. Overall, I'd give his performance a B. Nothing earth shattering, but not horrible at all.

very good video but it is VERY SHORT haha I hope you do a larger video. I really enjoyed the Christian Imagery post it helped my love of BvS love it even more to help flesh out the nuances of what Snyder, Terrio and company were trying to tell. At first I enjoyed Eisenberg's Luthor as a Dr Frankenstein type of wanting to go against go by creating his own version of Man, with Doomsday. The old motif of Man going against God. There are many layers to Luthor with Eisenberg's performance which many did not understand. It is probably the most important and fascinating character in all of BvS . Again, good analysis especially with Luthor's theme in the soundtrack.

Lex Luthor in BvS is definitely a Dr. Frankenstein figure. I think that was expressed visually through all of the lightning and sparks that happened around the ship as Doomsday was born. Has anyone wondered what Lex meant when he claimed that his father, Lex Sr., had subjected him to fists and "other abominations"? What exactly were those "other abominations"?

If I remember correctly, there were interviews that mentioned Lex having been abused by his father. Not sure what kind of abuse, but it seems to reason that abuse is what he's talking to about the "abominations".

Im suprised you didn't talk about the trump luthor parallels in BvS. Excerpt of my review: The parallels to United States presidential candidate Donald Trump may go over the head of some viewers. Both of them own wealthy companies, and continue the success of what his parents started and gave them, and both used false perception and media manipulation. Both are motivated by a strong sense of nationalism, and see a large threat to that. Just as Trump references the old America that he finds superior, Luthor calls back several times to an even older America, one he never experienced and heard only people dream of it, the land of freedom and opportunity. Luthor talks about American history such as Paul Revere’s Ride and the Salem Witch Trials. Both events placed within the context of a world with Superman, villainize Superman. Trump sees the growing threat of the Chinese economy, and wants to lead the country to its “good old days”, just as Lex wants to be the leader of America, and even the leader of humanity. This parallel may be further noticeable by comic readers who will know of Luthor’s run for presidency in the early 2000s.

Both manipulated good people through media manipulation and false perception to get them to fight against each other Bvs is how the election should have went with liberals and conservatives (superman and batman) seeing past the manipulation and realizing they want at their core the same thing.

I´ve gona back and forth on this because I think Jessie did an outstanding job, but what was even better was the writing, However, I think still someone else could have done an even better job. If they had have got an actor who people weren´t so against and wouldn´t be so distracting then this Lex would have worked better. Because Lex´s dialogue and it´s multiple levels of meaning are the real star of this character. Not necessarily the performance. For me Joaquin Pheonix, or Aaron Paul or Oscar Isaac would have been more ideal choices. Not so much because they would have been better but they would have been at least on par with Jessie and just wouldn´t have had the baggage of Jessie. I have my own video on Jessie, I hope you will watch kzread.info/dash/bejne/aHp4rKNtdNWaaKw.html One thing I´ll say though is that having a great villain is all good but you need a hero to match them. Especially the arch nemesis. And Superman is a big black hole at the center of this movie. I fucking hate his depiction in MoS and BvS and a villain is only as good as the hero. So having Lex be so charasmatic with a Superman with no personality who is a thoughtless, mopy, inept killer, hurts Jessie´s portrayal. For the life of me I don´t know why people like Cavill´s Superman. He is the easiest most unoriginal take on the character. Just an unstoppable god with no personality.

  • @trentosborne3326

Arrielle75 This video said it perfectly Lex Luthor is a businessman, philosopher, historian, mad scientist, who hates Superman is obsessed with power and accumulating that power for himself, who has a massive god complex, views himself as a Savior to humanity, and is driven by his massive personal feelings of powerlessness and inferiority in the face of Superman. That is who Lex Luthor is. People say Lex Luthor isn't supposed to be insane these people clearly don't get the actual character at all. Lex Luthor is completely and utterly psychotic to a terrifying level. I honestly think Lex Luthor is more psychotic than the Joker, at least Joker doesn't orchestrate acts of terrorism, treason and murder all to discredit someone than delude themselves into thinking they're the good guy. Joker knows he's a monster, Lex actually thinks he's the hero despite everything he does Lex thinks he's the hero. That is insane, Joker would say you're nuts before laughing at the irony. Lex Luthor is a lunatic, Eisenberg really showed this.

It's easy to say what the character's actions are in some plot-summary, but this does ignore Eisenberg's quirky portrayal that left him too goofy to take as a serious character. Or how many parts of his plan are just so dumb. Why did he create Doomsday if the fight was supposed to be Batman vs. Superman? If Superman dies, how is he going to control Doomsday? Why blow up congress with a wheelchair that can easily be traced back to you? And it is unfortunate, because twice in the film (in his dad's study with Holly Hunter & on the rooftop with Superman after Lois is gone) where Lex got to show off his skills at being an unnerving and cocky fellow who seems to otherwise have control of his facilities. Otherwise he just too over the top and cartoony. He would've been a far better character if he just wasn't Lex or had to play up the crazy. BTW, I can't help but laugh at giving him props for figuring out Superhero identities while at the same time using the scene where we find out Lex either has way too much time on his hand with Photoshop or literally made his graphics team create logos for these not-yet-superhero characters. What a joke. I bet he also blew up the Caraba's he sent them to in celebration for their work too since they knew so much.

Lex created Doomsday as a backup plan incase Batman didn't kill Superman, hence why he said, "If man won't kill God, then the devil will do it". Superman living or dying have to do with controlling Doomsday. Lex thought he could control him since he used his blood to create him. The only reason the wheelchair was traced back to Lex is because Lois had the bullet from the desert. Otherwise, it wouldn't have happened.

J Vit what's wrong with lexs team making logos for lex? All he really has to do is give them the idea for the logo and they can make it. No one really has to know anything. Btw lexs personality, is very much in line with cannon of the many different interpretations of the character. Not just one version. Also I think you are confusing eccentric and cartoony. Cartoony is people not acting like people. People do act like jesse's lex. Not everyone is stoic.

  • @jvit4245

    @jvit4245

    7 жыл бұрын

Ian Jackson I would definitely not say Lex's personality is in line with most of the different interpretations. There's a difference between similarities (For example: Magneto, The Joker & Captain American all hate the Nazi's) being similar characters. Lex in most established media is a sauve political character (from swindling with mayors to running for president) that really has a good public image of the coolest guy in the room. We see nothing to say that Jesse's interpretation is sauve, good at greasing wheels or is considered a cool guy; every things we're shown even in public has him being an over the top schitzo. And that's where he's cartoony: having zany plans and awkward phrases. I think you're confusing believable with stoic, but this is clearly going to be a subjective thing so it's not worth arguing about. As for the logos, if they're going to actually be the real logos it means our heroes have appropriated the marketing ideas of a homocidal maniac (I mean Lex, not Batman btw) for their branding. It's also, again, silly. WHY is he giving them logos, or paying a design team to make them prior to killing them off in an Olive Garden explosion (since the heroes are all secrets that only he knows about and most likely wouldn't want shared)? The only rational reasons are A) the studio wants to market the characters already plot-be-damned or B) The homocidal maniac (again, not talking about Batman this time) really likes to doodle in relation to his nefarious ways. Is his big plan for Superman & Batman to fight include stick figures with matching capes fighting in the air? If he was really eccentric, they'd have shown him having a tick about sketching, or designing his company's products so then it's an established quirk for him. Twitching his head a couple of times isn't a quirk, it's heavy symbolism to show that he's just crazy, which is cartoony.

duckmilkprod And thanks for making the videos. I may not agree but it's a fine take on why you don't have an issue with the character/like the character. I think why I have issues with him is that it had potential at certain points, like the rooftop scene. The way Jesse handled his own in front of Superman, slowly gaining confidence in his words as he laid forth the trap for the man in blue before launching into the "special woman" stuff was chilling and believable. It was easily the best scene in the movie and top 5 villain moment in comic book movies in the last 5 years. If he was just mediocre the entire time, ignoring the silly, it'd be forgettable. As is, it's just a few great highs and too many lows for me, and that's just disappointing. Keep up the series, it's good work.
