    Rebecca did you catch the other subtext of the Snyder films besides the Christian Imagery like the fact that Snyder was retelling the Wizard of OZ? Watch the series again with that in mind and also here dialogue pointing to it. Clarks new life starts after a tornado changes everything in his world (Dorothy's story). Bruce a dark foreboding creature who is just a man behind a curtain (cape) to have those in fear of him who is just using gadgets and trickery who also is the one who gathers those to him to fight off the threat to come.(The Wizard of OZ). Diana the calm voice of reason who tells us who this threat is in our story who has great power and gives the gathered guidance (Glenda the good Witch). Barry (like in OZ) is the first one found whose life is in tatters and is a patchwork like his lair and Super suit is. His brain is not focused until his new found friends give him focus and proves to his jailed father his focus with his diploma (job as a forensic scientist. My boy has a brain) (Scarecrow). Arthur a man caught between two worlds who is too cowardly to take up his rightful rule as a King and also his human responsibility to do what's right for humanity (Cowardly Lion). Do I need to explain Victor our heart broken metal man (Tinman)? To wrap it up Steppenwolf and his Parademons (The Wicked Witch and her flying Monkey's). Remember Lex referring to the the Kryptonite in the Indian ocean as "Emerald City"? There is about a half dozen other cool nuggets pointing to it. Aside from the OZ stuff. Did you notice that both Lex and Bruce had female assistance? Lex had Mercy and Bruce's assistance name was Grace. Lex KILLED Mercy because he had none Superman or humanity. Bruce still had Grace and gave grace to Superman after he saw his humanity. Anyway... I've enjoyed your takes on this subject over the years hope this brings another fun view for you to ponder. God bless and up up and away!

    @@manbat You've outlined a great case for the Wizard of Oz connections! I knew about the Emerald City dialogue from Lex in BvS, but you've thought about that much more thoroughly than I have. Great job! And yeah, I've made that connection about Mercy and Grace as well! Bruce and Lex are compared and contrasted in BvS so it makes sense that they would have similarities in their assistants. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    Great interview! The first sentence is SO TRUE! Some people don't even realise how much of a miracle it is get a movie made and finished, even if it's a "bad movie" . There's so much effort and collaboration going on. But hey, it's much easier to tear something apart than building it. Also great commentary you both made during the watch party. I specially loved when he addressed the whole "I've been accused of not liking Superman". I've been a Superman fan for more than 2 decades and it's absolutely baffling how people to this day diminish his love and understanding of the character. And as you said, this movie (along with the other two) is very reverent to Superman.

    Even if I personally dislike a film, I always think "Congrats on making a movie, though. I couldn't do it." Zack's response about that is a good reminder for me to keep that in the back of my mind.

    " There's so much effort and collaboration going on. But hey, it's much easier to tear something apart than building it." Weirdly enough, I NEVER heard that defense when "modern audiences" and "media outlets" were tearing older media apart. And there IS such a thing like a BAD MOVIE, REGARDLESS of how much effort went into it. Even Directors themselves admit to it. "But hey, it's much easier to tear something apart than building it." That's such an oversimplification that I don't even know where to start? Slapping obscene amount of CGI onto a movie doesn't make it a masterpiece. I'm sorry, it simply doesn't. Most modern entertainment pay so little attention to its OWN storytelling that it often contradicts itself, sometimes even in the SAME episode. Most modern filmmakers have forgotten what it means to be a hero, or simply makes the villain the "hero" of the story. Every single thing made in modern cinema simply feels like exactly the same thing as everything else - there's no more experimentation or trying out new things. And that's just scratching the surface.

  • @sigmacademy

    "Some people don't even realise how much of a miracle it is get a movie made and finished, " Making movies are LITERALLY a filmmaker's job. A job that they are getting PAID to do. I don't seem people LITERALLY praising every single person on the planet for every job THEY do? :/

  • @TILB9

    @TILB9

    11 ай бұрын

    @@sigmacademy With all due respect, it's never a good idea to generalize. There're plenty of filmmakers outthere that are still experimenting and innovating to this day. *You just have to look them up...* There's no such thing as an objectively "bad" movie. It's all a matter of the subjective experience. A movie I may not necessarily find good or interesting might entertain or even offer a lot of meaning to someone else. A "good" movie can come from anywhere. If CGI is so obscene to you, then I wonder if you also dislike 3D animated movies for that matter. Nonetheless, I never use the word "masterpiece", so what do I know? Movies are a bunch of frames moving subsequently, that's how they were first created. They're a visual medium because when you watch a movie, first and foremost *YOU'RE WATCHING THE MOVIE!* Of course storytelling is important, and not getting stuck in the status quo and all that stuff. At the end of the day, if one wants a healthy discussion, it's also important to try to understand what a filmmaker or an artist of any art is trying to convey, and then decide whether their art works or doesn't. Rather than being disingenious about it and intentionally hyperbolic. And just because you don't like a piece of art, that doesn't mean you have to be smug and hateful about it. Brad Bird has a great quote that says: *Everyone* says "THIS SUCKS". *Half of them* explain "WHY". *No one* suggests "HOW TO IMPROVE". Onto your other comment about every single other job, here're my 2 cents: Just because not everyone appreciates or respects everyone's job, doesn't mean that nobody does so either. My mother has taught me since I was a kid that "right is right even if nobody is doing it and wrong is wrong even if everybody's doing it". I always try to be kind to those people working at a service because they're taking their time to help/serve me as a client/customer/patient. But that doesn't mean that every job is a good job, but that's a different topic for another day.

    You can find on KZread clips of Woody Allen saying he didn't like 2001 at first, and then later rewatched it and decided that Kubrick's filmmaking was simply way ahead of where he was when he first saw it. You can also find Steven Spielberg saying he had to tell Stanley Kubrick that he didn't like The Shining when he first saw it. Now he says he's seen it many times and it's one of his favorite movies. The Shining got NO awards nominations the year it came out, except for the Razzies. Other movies like Blade Runner, Scarface and The Thing were also notoriously panned by critics when they came out, but later came to be regarded as classics. Almost always, the movies that this happens to are darker, slower, more complex, more intellectual, more shocking and/or more violent than other movies in their genre. The Thing, for example, was negatively compared to E.T. when it came out. E.T. was said to be nice, warm, pleasant and family-friendly, while The Thing was labeled as dark, disturbing, dreary and violent. Batman v Superman feels like a blood brother to these once-maligned, now classic films. It's exactly the kind of movie that, throughout film history, critics have balked at and rejected, only for it to later become a revered and admired classic. I remember Scott Mendelson writing in Forbes that Batman v Superman was "one of the most rewatchable bad movies" he's ever seen. What does that mean? How can a movie be bad if it's worth rewatching? Who would torture themselves rewatching a bad movie? This tells you that some people judged the movie not on its actual filmmaking quality, but on whether it fit their predetermined expectations for the genre. "Batman is supposed to be a nice guy, this movie stinks!" "Lex Luthor is supposed to be old and bald, this movie stinks!" "Superman is supposed to always smile and never be depressed, this movie stinks!" The history of Batman v Superman is still being written. In this age of tired, predictable, formulaic superhero movies, people are realizing more and more that it wasn't actually a bad idea for a superhero movie to do something different than what people expected.

    BvS is a meta movie about the characters legacies themselves. Notice all the references to Superman and Batman's own histories in the movie: 1938, saving cats out of trees, Mask of the Phantasm, freaks dressed like clowns, etc. and that's not even including the mythic and historical and pop culture references (King Arthur, Wizard of Oz, White Rabbit, Christ, Hamlet, Zeus, etc.) it's all in there. The movie is basically saying, "Superman and Batman have a place in our modern lives and their iconography MEANS something. They can actually inspire us. They aren't just funny mascots.

Darkseid and Steppenwolf were so HUGE. I actually spoke to a few people at the event who also said that BvS was their favorite of the 3. Same for me! I'd like to pursue the question of why that is, but you gave a good answer. Christopher Nolan helped him get some of that control, I think. Wish studios would learn the lesson to get out of the way of the filmmaker. Studio Notes can be helpful, but studios with too much control can take away from the creative process.

    Zack Snyder has said in the past that he makes the films for himself because there's no way he could make them for anyone else (which is incredibly wise). The fact that there are those of us who see what he is doing and appreciate it must just be icing on the cake. I actually shot this interview on my iPhone 13 Pro Max with my DJI app (that I use with my DJI OM5 Gimbal). Previously, I had the app set to 4K at 60 fps (to shoot slow motion video for a project) and forgot to change it back to 24 fps. I meant to shoot it at 24 fps, but because I forgot to do so because I only had so much time, this video is at 60 fps. I edited in 1920x1080 because Premiere doesn't do a great job at handling 4K yet (or, maybe it's just that my MacBook Pro can't handle it well). Shot in 4K at 60 fps. Edited, exported, and uploaded as 1920x1080. I threw a movie LUT on top to give it a splash of color: www.movieluts.com/#products

    I really liked the theatrical release. I thought it was a great film when I first saw it. The Ultimate Edition is even better. It's one of the best superhero films ever made. And who cares what a critic thinks? Rotten Tomatoes critics scores are weird. Why do people put so much weight on them? The audience score is more telling but even then films get review bombed or fluffed up with bots. See a film for yourself. Make up your own mind.
