Why I listen to vinyl, and maybe you should too.

Музыка

Today I’d like to talk about the reason I have gone back to vinyl and why you may want to also. If you have any reasons you’d like to share, you can do so in the comments below, I promise that I’ll reply to each and every one of you.
You see, I had been noticing for a while that I wasn’t as interested in music as I once was. I listened a lot and played in a band, but the enjoyment of sitting back and having a good listen was gone.
I needed that enjoyment back in my life, and getting back into vinyl has changed the way I listen to music now, even when I’m listening to a streaming service.
You need to set up a time to listen to music and really soak in what the artist is trying to tell you, and this is why vinyl is so great
A record is tangible. You can feel it in your hands.
It’s even a bit delicate, like an antique, like something frozen in time, like something that is treasured.

I love to collect colored vinyl. It’s so cool to own a limited edition colored pressing of a certain record. I like that some are translucent or have a smoke/marble effect. I collect CDs too, but I think colored vinyl is much cooler. I also enjoy collecting records for the artwork. Some records come with art booklets, posters, or vinyl exclusive cover/sleeve art. I really love and appreciate art, so I get excited when records come with awesome artwork.

Morgan Brandon Thanks for your comments. It is the ultimate experience that is out there for music fans, IMO. There is always that anticipation when opening up the record the first time that you don’t get with other mediums.

Around four years ago I got my old turntable working. Back in 1983 it was a top end unit. Now I need a cheap pre-amp to get it to work with my stereo. Like you, I prefer to listen to an album start to finish. I have never really enjoyed mixes. Unfortunately, I changed to purchasing tapes around 1982 when I realized I was always re-recording all my albums to tapes to listen to them in the car. I did continue to purchase Jazz albums as I only listened to rock in my car. When the CD came out (while I was in collage) I spend all my spare money on CDs. I remember not having money for food because I spend everything on CDs :-) I would guess I have 50 to 100 albums with 90% being Jazz. I miss just sitting around listening to music.

This. All of this. We get the question on a regular basis when we explain what we do. "Why vinyl? Isn't that a pain to listen to?". I'm going to share this video with anyone who asks that from now on.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Mr. OverDrive. We have something in common, as my Family & I have a Lifetime Music Collection.! On Boxing Day 2004 I decided we would trade in our Record Collection and concentrate on the Cd versions. The reason we went that route is we knew how to digitize the songs, and keep the original Disks and Cases in Mint condition by sealing them up in storage for decades to come. I guess, I'm somewhere between your experence with tangible Vinyl Records and modern streaming services now. I seldom ever touch the Cd Albums, but I have the most incredible data base and half a lifetime of listening and working with my collection, which has been labour of Love.

Great to hear from you again AngelFace! I have playlist upon playlist of 1000's of songs, so I definitely wouldn't be putting down anyone who listens to digital. I really think that it is music's most consistent form. I think some record "collectors" never play their records as they want to keep the value of them up, that's not the case for me. There has to be a balance between the enjoyment of the art and enjoyment of the hobby. Talk to you again soon.

I don't have any Musical Talent myself and I dont play any instruments, but I use to know the Bands, Albums and Songs really well back in the day. I don't want this to get out but I might have Canada Largest Personal Music Collection depending how you calculate it. I could probably give you a digital copy of every single record or Cd Music Album that you own Sir or have ever owned in your lifetime. However, like you said, it's the physical process of preparing the record, and dedicating the time to do nothing but listen to music. Besides digital copies of my Cds are highly compressed and don't give the true dynamic sound and I have not retained the proper order of the songs as the Artist intended them to be listened to.

I would love to listen to a lot more vinyl but most albums i listen to are Hip-Hop from 1990-2000 and i quickly found out that due to the CD uprising, the vinyl versions are rare and super expensive. Being from Germany doesn't help. I am not going to spend 80-130 bucks on an album :(

It really is a shame how expensive this hobby is getting. Eventually it’s going to kill the hobby.

When I was a teen in the 70s, most looked forward to getting a good job so they could buy a thousand plus stereo with a tube amp and amazing speakers. Cassettes were for cars, after 8-tracks were considered annoying crap. One tip- see the Joe Rogan KZread videos about the benefits of micro-dosing magic mushrooms, not enough to hallucinate and not enough to throw up. At 61, it has greatly improved my vision and hearing, Making me feel more like it is still 1979, my first year of college, and visiting the dorm room of the guy down the hall with a new Genesis Trick of the Tail album to hear at 2 am.
