i can relate but i also think reading is like love. There's the 'butterfly in the stomach love' but that doesn't happen all the time, then there's the quieter long-term love where you don't get the same constant passion but that makes you appreciate your companion in a more tender way. And books are the same, sometimes you find the one that gives you the flash of excitement but longer term it's also ok to appreciate the more relaxed comfort a good book still gives you. Anyway, if you're really after something that can grip you or move you how about something more outside your comfort zone? I loved the pillars of the earth (historical fiction, a lot of political intrigue) or a little life (literary fiction and very character driven but i don't know many people who were not moved), or into thin air by jon krakauer (non-fiction memoir but very gripping). If you prefer SFF, the saga of the exile by julian may is incredibly entertaining and a good mix of plot and characters (even though it has a slow start). And looking at your GR, you haven't read ASOIAF?

I didn’t find this on your list of books you’ve already read, unless I missed it in the over 500 book long list lol. I highly recommend Hyperion & Fall of Hyperion. They should be read together, as they are one story. I was gripped to tears, thrilled by battles, terrorized by the Shrike, and immersed in universal cultures and worlds. It’s a masterpiece IMO. The prose isn’t quite purple. I’d say more lavender colored lol.

@@DragonArmyBooks I might be in the minority but I prefer The Fall of Hyperion. It's one of my all-time favorite books. If you enjoy the world building in Hyperion but want more plot progression then please push through and read The Fall of Hyperion. It starts a little slow and the structure is different, which is why it disappointed some people, but for me it totally delivers and expands upon what is set up in Hyperion.

I am so sorry to hear that you have been feeling this way, but I totally know what you mean. It is very rare for me to find that book/series that just completely captures me anymore, but that makes it even more amazing when I do find it. Some series that worked really well for me are: - The Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff--> assassins (who actually kill), crazy plot twists, good action, mystery elements that keep you turning the pages, amazing character work, unique story telling, dark humour, cool worldbuilding - The Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne by Brian Staveley (and the continuation series: Ashes of the Unhewn Throne) --> multiple POV (three royal siblings,, but one is a monk, one is training to join a deadly fighting force and one is in the palace), found family, amazing action, dark humour, beautiful writing, compelling characters, high stakes - The Threadlight series by Zack Argyle --> self-pub, cool and interesting magic system, intriguing plot, great cast of characters, animal companion (but it is unfinished; two book are out) - The Riyria Revelations by Michael J. Sullivan --> good ol' high fantasy, found family, assassins, great characters, light-hearted moments mixed with heartbreaking moments, engaging plot, accessible writing style, just a lot of fun I hope you will find something that works for you! Sending you all the positive vibes ;)

I know your pain. Cause we all have to instances of not feeling when doing something you like. As for the recommendations. The White Tiger ( a novel about the caste system), Sacred Games (a crime drama set in Mumbai), One Hundred Years of Solitude ( a classic novel about the rise and fall of a village seen from the Buendia family), the works of Rubem Fonseca (a Brazilian crime author who was a cop), The Book of Disquiet ( a melancholic book by Fernando Pessoa), Abel Sanchez (a modern re-telling of Cain and Abel), Blindness ( one of the famous novels by Jose Saramago), The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas (a classic Brazilian novel of the life of a dead author) and Cave and Shadows (a Filipino "metaphysical" thriller), No Longer Human ( a classic by Osamu Dazai) and Kafka on the Shore ( a psychidellic novel that is a good intro to the style of Haruki Murakami). Hopefully these could help.

Its definitely not for everyone, but I think it might be a much different experience for you, maybe try Dichronauts by Greg Egan. I think also, maybe there's an element to this that your reading is also so tied to your self imposed "responsibility " to produce content. I get the feel sometime that I can't just sit with a book and release and enjoy reading experience, because I'm taking notes in my head and keeping my reviewer hat on. I think even before I was doing reviews, I approached books that way anyway (analyzing why i think my final opinion of the book will be...while still reading reading), so I dont think my reading experience is changed that much..just a thought. Thanks for sharing your feelings. Love your channel.

I totally understand what you’re describing. The burn out of just not caring, and everything starting to blur together until it feels like you’re just going through the motions. I don’t know if this will help you, but I wanted to share my own solution to this feeling. I’ve found that switching mediums helps A LOT. Switching genres can also help, but I feel like it's not as effective as changing mediums. Lately not only do I read novels, but I’ve also started to read WebComics (comic books and Manga are also applicable). I’m still reading a book, but I have a whole new layer of visuals to explore as well as the story itself. I highly recommend downloading the Tapas App- they have hundreds of Web Comics in Full Color that are updated weekly (and on every story, the first 3 chapters are ALWAYS FREE!! 😊). My recommended story would be SSS-Class Revival Hunter. I adore this story, because I seriously went from being disgusted with the main character to developing deep respect and concern for his mental health in the span of 3 chapters. 😊 it’s fast paced, and I couldn’t put it down.

My teen son watches your channel. When he talked to me today about this video I said, "on it!" These are all different genres but some of my very favorites. 1. Redwall - British classic and for kids but as C.S.Lewis said, "No book is really reading at the age of 10 which is not equally - and often far more worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond." 2. The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. I downloaded this audio book to listen to before my boys and I went on a trip. We all fell in love with the simplicity of it and the characters. There is a sequel. 3. The Island of Dr. Moreau by H. G. Wells. This may provide some action you crave :). 4. The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wild - another classic. This one leaves one looking inward afterwards. 5. Emissary by Thomas Locke - Fantastic, clean fantasy. 6. The Giver series by Lois Lowry. I could not put these down. 7. Last but not least, The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. If you have not read this series yet; this is a very clean and compelling fantasy series. The books are long but don't let that deter you. I hope you find what you're looking for in your next good book.

I had the same problem and I realized I needed a break from the usual genre that I read, so I started reading other books that interested me and got back to reading. For example, I couldn't read another high fantasy book so I started reading some sci-fi, contemporary fantasy or high fantasy that doesn't have the usual medieval setting. So if you find a book you want to read that's not the usual genres you read, maybe you'll overcome that feeling.

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.” - To probably not your surprise, I still recommend this series. The second book is a different pace than the first book. I love this series because of how they earn their characters and there character development. The second book gets a lot deeper into the magic system, you get to meet another forsaken and see their nuance a bit. I liked the first book but it was wanting to know more and more after the second book that drew me into the series! Also, I cannot wait for the TV series to come out. (November... to long of a wait). GL buddy on picking something that drives your passion for books.

I can’t vouch for many books you haven’t already read. But the two best I could suggest are: 🔹Red Sister (Book of the ancestor series). Assassin nuns. The character development made me feel a lot in the first book and then the action really picks up at the end of the first book and through the second. I haven’t finished the final book of the trilogy yet. 🔹 Mort (Discworld) - sometimes a bit of humor can reset your mind. It’s a palate cleanser kind of book. I laughed out loud at points. Also, maybe it would help to read some trash books to reset your palate. You’ve been reading some phenomenal books but they all are numbingly good.

@@DragonArmyBooks I just finished with Mort myself after a slump and absolutely loved it. I was skeptical about it going in because it is absurdist fantasy but after-seriously the first 25 pages- I was sold. It's light, humorous, and easy. I've heard stories about how Death is such a well-done character that fans would write to Terry Pratchett on their death beds, hoping that when it was their time to go, that it would be the Death depicted in his books that took them onto the next. And as someone who has an existential dread about death: I found myself being comforted by this character as well. I don't know how close I am to feeling that love for him yet... but he is splendid. Check it out for sure.

Usually all I want to do is read, but lately it's been so hard trying to pick up a book. Honestly don't worry about it.
