Why I flew in a fighter jet! Commercial Astronaut training with the Polaris Dawn Crew!
Ғылым және технология
Today we’ll be talking to the crew of Polaris Dawn and we’ll dive into some fun history on fighter jet training, we’ll talk about some of the physics involved, the G suit and nerd out on the jets, because I love learning about all this cool stuff and I assume you do too.
But if you want to just see me get thrashed around in a fighter jet, I do have timestamps for all the sections so you can skip forward if you don’t want to dive into all the nerdy things that I get excited about.

‘Old’.. lol the 29s are still fairly current in the Russian and Russian supplied arsenals around the world. An ‘old’ Mig you can still find is like a 15, 17 or 19. Think N Korea still uses them as current tech lol. 29s are barely able to be considered old. Is a Iphone 13 old? That’s basically what a mig 29 is in terms of aviation tech

@@aauwhatitdo1582 yeah but it’s really not even a full generation out of the current gen fighters.. still more in use than the newest gen jets.. I get it’s been flying quite a long time.. but Aviation doesn’t move at the speed of phone or PC iterations.. in those terms, it’s literally like a iphone 13. If you say, and old Iphone.. you think of a 12 or 13? Lol I don’t. If you ask, what’s an old US jet, what comes to mind? An F18? I don’t think so.. I think of a Sabre or Phantom or something from generations ago.. that’s kinda old for a jet. Calling last gen jets that are still the majority of what’s in use, old, is not an accurate statement imo. You have to have perspective on the tech involved and the lifespan of these platforms. 40+ years is quite normal for an aviation platform.. with many minor revisions along the way. I guess if you’re younger than the airframe.. you might think they’re ‘old’. But that is from an incorrect perspective.

Every time I watch one of your videos I'm reminded that this is so much more then a KZread thing. The quality, of production level, the research put behind each video, and the fact that you get to actually go out and have hands on experiences like this one make your videos feel so far ahead of the KZread platform. This feels closer to Netflix Documentary style content and I am so thankful to get to enjoy work that I can tell has meaning and heart felt care put into it! I felt the same way. Tim's commitment to education is phenomenal, and even in a video where he gets to experience something so awesome (and it's so well deserved), he doesn't lose that educator edge. He asked and answered a really relevant question while also giving a further insight into Jared's professionalism that shows how these missions are happening. These are true missions run in a manner that starts to refine processes that previously only national space programs ran.

I don’t know about luck; Tim’s worked pretty hard to learn all of this information (and sweat a lot in a Russian pressure suit). In the few years I’ve been following him, he’s easily covered a Master’s Degree worth knowledge and close to a Doctorate, with Kerbal Space experiments and rocket engine research. He probably values his KZread achievement plaque more than a degree. I think he values the friends he’s made too, including Elon Musk, who seems to appreciate Tim also. I have also enjoyed Tim’s “bumper” music, that he wrote and performed several years ago. (I guess he’s been too busy for new compositions.)

•TRUE I've seen plenty of hard workers who don't achieve this level of "living the dream", so I don't think acknowledging the amount of opportunities that had to line up on time with his willingness and ability to take the chance does anything to discount from the amount of hard work he put in.
Please Jared, take Tim on one of the next Polaris missions

Hi Jessica
Tim, I'm a former Naval Aviation Officer who pulled a few Gs myself for awhile. Obviously, it was something I'll never forget. I'm sure you'll also never forget what Jared Isaacman gave you the opportunity to experience. Thank you so much for clearly explaining to us why this sort of thing is still important. I think Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon described it very well how in intense situations a persons awareness and ability to function is very limited, and that this training is helping them to be able to continue to function even if they encounter an off-nominal situation.
Some of the best rear passenger cockpit footage I’ve ever seen. Awesome content my man.

Actually... How did they make the audio so flawless in all those settings (cockpit, tarmac, etc)? This is top tier production quality through and through. Congrats to the entire Everyday Astronaut team.
Beyond cool that you were able to experience that. Loved how blown away you looked.
excellent video. the simple fact that you are getting first hand access to firefly, rocketlab, starship and polaris shows the level of dedication you have for rocketry is clearly recognised by the giants of space, well deserved recognition too. keep up the good work.
I'm happy content creators like Tim, Scott and Destin have been the types to grow and benefit from their hard work. They rarely seem to let their egos and personal beliefs cloud the message they are trying to deliver. Outside of a couple bad apples that let their channels become politicized, I'd say the KZread science/space community is a strong group that provides a lot of terrific content. 👍
Love the fact that Gillis and Menon are being brought to the forefront! Milestones all around 💪🏾💪🏾
That was fantastic! I completely understand the "why" behind jet training now. As soon as I saw your brain turn to mush, the penny dropped. Your situational awareness basically dropped to zero, but The Kidd was able to navigate, control, fly in formation and on top of that, be aware of what was going on in the Mig. One of your best videos yet! Peace!
The shots from that horizon-locked 360° cam is the best in-aircraft video I've seen anywhere! *THAT'S* how you do it! 🙃
Tim, this vid was surprisingly good. I thought it would just be you taking a tourist ride on a jet. But you turned it into something genuinely educational. I really appreciate that. I didn't realize the usefulness of this type of training until now. Thanks for making this vid!

I've never been speechless let alone finding myself with my jaw dropped for any of your videos Tim. This was absolutely incredible and I'm so darn thrilled you had the opportunity to have this experience!
Excellent, Tim! I'm so happy for you, I couldn't help but smiling during your whole flight!
I love that you said 'real world dangerous situations', right when there was a fellow on screen, up a ladder with a screwdriver sticking out of his back pocket. World class training right there.
So proud of you Tim. Like many others I feel like I jumped on early on and have been so happy for you and this exciting journey that you are on. Thank you for not only being a teacher and educator, but also a true influencer, leading with integrity and showing us all how anyone can do anything with hard work and commitment. I can't wait to see you in space my friend. Thank you again. Cheers!
You know, its crazy to see what your channel has evolved into. I've been following since the early beginning where you would wear you that orange high altitude suite in most of your videos. I'm incredibly jealous because I'm a huge fan of soviet era Migs, and pretty much any high speed flying machines. But to see you go from simple short videos that explained the basics of rockets while running around in a heavy, and hot space suite, to riding around, and spending time with the people who will no doubt take our human race to a level that I dreamed of as a child watching "The Jetsons". I love what your doing, and each new video is another mind blowing experience that hopefully one day we might all get a chance to enjoy.
Tim, you looked more comfortable and at ease than most non-pro fliers in a high performance jet.
OMG. TOO COOL!!! My heart was pounding just watching you!! 🤩🚀🚀🚀 Awesome having Eric Berger fly with you as well!!!
Now this is a nice weekend gift! Thank you Tim!!
Just watching this now Tim! So happy to see you enjoy the experience of the fast jet flying. I was a line engineer on Tornado GR1’s and had the luck to backseat up the length of the uk and fly hands off using TFR through the Welsh mountains. Also some supersonic action fully swept wings. It was awesome. I’d love to do it again! Of course I did fly on a couple of Concorde test flights after major maintenance checks with just 10 people on board. Flying is awesome You are so lucky! Way to go man!!!!

Someone should have taken the Concorde on a supersonic low level flight before retiring it. Imagine what THAT would have been like!
Tim is one of the rare Ewe Toobers who is dedicated to educating his audience in an effective and entertaining manner. Most jet ride videos are *_all_* about the personal experience of the presenter, not Tim. Tim nailed his mission once more, in this case by teaching us why astronauts train in fighter jets from the early days, until now. Years ago I talked my way onto a Texas NASA training facility (pre 911) and was able to land a shuttle simulator. I was also fortunate enough to speak with some NASA T38 pilots, but did not know what questions to ask to get a full understanding of the purpose of the T38 training. I did not get this perspective until watching Tim's video. We always learn something important from Tim's productions. Thanks Tim.
Credit where it is due, the Mig and Sukhoi's are gorgeous planes. What an incredible opportunity Tim. Thanks for taking us along and for the nerdy parts. My flight sim playing brain was tickled.
Wow that was a nice one! I had a go in something similar as well and plan to do it annually! I did only 500km/h and 5,5G in a polish Iskra, but was worth it! As far as the sweep angle is concerned (11:49) you should measure it in the quarter chord line, which would mean that the Albatros doesn't have any or it has a very slight one (under 2-3 degrees).
I've strapped on an ejection seat a few times. Absolutely awesome. Great video Tim, looks like you had a great time. The only thing that you missed out on was when you were inverted over the Mig you needed to 'flip the bird' as per the original Top Gun.
When you started this journey, I bet you never imagined you'd be doing stuff like this! Great video, amazing editing and excellent music (as usual!). I was grinning from ear to ear when you were up in the jet, must have been an intense feeling!
Those mission specialists really explained mental overload perfectly, including how you overcome it with practice. I trained to skydive using AFF, so even my first jumps were from high altitude with a long freefall. I had a lot to focus on and I did it well. But there was a moment on my fifth skydive where I suddenly noticed that I was able to look around and enjoy the view. It hasn't occurred to me before that I was unable to do that because of all the details I was paying attention to. A real eye opening moment.
What can i say Tim, just an awesome video and very enlightening with why fast jet training is still necessary in the commercial space sector, Sarah's and Anna's explanation on what experiences they gained from it was really informative, well done and keep up the good work 👏

Every one of us that comes to this channel is the beneficiary of your channel's mission; to bring rocket science down to earth. Dude! Nothing boring about the history! Thanks for not only the jet stuff but all the physics and history. Excellent job!
Ohhhh my God, Tim. You got to experience something that only a select few have ever gotten to do in their lifetime. Just seeing you smile as you pull those high-G maneuvers reminded me of the many times my dad told me about his incentive flight in an F-15D Eagle when he was in the Air Force. Like you, he told me all about it with such joy and a twinkle in his eyes. He could still recall the moments of putting on his G-Suit, getting into the aircraft, and then taking off. Not to mention he would speak with such enthusiasm describing the "Elephant on your chest" feeling on the high G turns. He loved every second of it. Also, since I'm currently studying to get an Airframe and Powerplant certification, you talking about dihedral, supersonic flight, how jet engines work, and such, really made me go "Oh yeah, I remember talking about that in class" and gave me even more initiative to study and work hard to earn my certification. Congrats, on being able to earn your wings in an Alpha Jet Tim. You earned them.
Tim, you continue to impress me, I have been a fan for a long time, but this video has pushed me over the edge to support you on Patreon. What you have accomplished as a dedicated space enthusiast boggles the mind. Exclusive tours at SpaceX with your tour guide, none other than Elon Musk himself. History of Soviet Rocket engines. Live feeds from launches. A dedicated media vehicle, and now an inside view of "fighter jet training" for astronauts! As a 69-year-old retired person, I see you in the vanguard of your generation crafting a custom career that allows you to "live your dream". I hope your peers are as impressed with what you have accomplished as I am. You have done extraordinary things with modest resources, primarily driven by your boundless enthusiasm and that enthusiasm is palpable in every one of your videos. I feel good after watching an Everyday Astronaut video. My hopes for humanity are revived, and I become more optimistic about the future. I can't wait for what you will surprise me with next. You are an asset to humanity.
Pretty easy to see where all this is going eventually. I look forward to seeing it happen, and I love the way you document your experiences.
Love seeing the water vapor form around the wings during the high G turns looks so cool
This might be your greatest video. Flying with the full crew of an upcoming spaceflight. You've made it Tim.

I was a technician on fighters in the RAAF. One of the perks of the job was to do backseat rides. It's a no brainer to say I love your world class content and infinitely superb footage but this got me emotionally. Not just the insane grin on your face that will soak into your soul and be part of you forever but the sharing of the bewilderment and the awe that you gave, so we, can also, come along for the ride. The Polaris crew look like family and I felt a strong pull of wanting for their well-being and we felt their commitment to the pursuit to do better and be better. The reality of "boldly going" no longer feels like a fantasy, it's more factual, more real, and as their journey is beginning, we see them as people like us. Doing incredible feats, pushing incredible limits, urging us to follow and step further and further. To Be An Everyday Astronaut. Wow Tim....yeah, that was emotional. Top work Fella. Cheers. Love from Liverpool UK.
This is awesome! I love how you take the opportunity to deep dive and share your knowledge with the rest of us when you can (I know this is what you love doing but still, I don't take it for granted), instead of "just" shooting a cool video of you flying in a fight jet! Tim, aka callsign "Everyday". Great exposition on why astronaut training still includes the constant use of T-38s (and now Jared's jets). (IIRC the MiG is his and the other jets belong to his Draken company.) Sarah and Anna's comments at the end made this super clear. Why doesn't somebody give me these rides? I mean, is it so hard to pick me up out of my recliner and shuffle over to a jet? Just make sure there's a big cup holder.

As a retired heavy construction project mgr civil engineer I understand much of the stuff, but you have a wonderful knack of working with the actual folks and explaining the details! I've never seen such a cockpit scene = slow, easy to comprehend and your shared reactions really put it all in context. Can't say enough good for Jared and his spirit of adventure pushing the limits of what can be done - now helping Hubble!! and all the while helping St Jude's! The world is blessed for great minds/hearts as Jared and Elon! Thanks for bringing them to us so we can be better supporters!
You inspire me Tim and it just makes me happy to watch everything you produce and stream live. Passionate, authentic, sincere, raw. I love it!
When you pretend to pull 7gs.

I’ve got a clip of the G meter to prove it! Besides, don’t think you can pull much less than 7 and get the low pressure shock waves on the wings… 🤔

@@EverydayAstronaut Those things all sound good, but unfortunately that just was not a 7G turn. Would really like to see the G meter haha, if it hit 7Gs at all (which I doubt) it was very very brief. It was not my intention to hurt your feelings, I was just pointing out you're lying about the amount of Gs you pulled, don't feel bad. Very few people can handle pulling that kind of Gs for any amount of time.

@@EverydayAstronaut Really cool video Tim, love the channel... post it, prove this troll wrong. Even if it wasnt sustained 7gs still really cool. (if it was sustained even cooler, i just assumed it wasnt) (edit: would be even cooler if you synced the g meter with the video so we can get a sense of how hard ur turning)

@@n0otch943 Wasn't trying to 'get him', just pointing out theres no way this was a 7G turn, I know what a 7G turn looks like and this wasn't it. I'm sure it was still an amazing experience for him. Plus now he can fib to his friends and people online about how many Gs he pulled.
I worked on fighter aircraft in the military. To this day I still love to see people fly in them and wish I had had the opportunity to do it as well
