Why I Don't Train High Volume

It’s probably not the volume itself, but the INSTANT DIFFERENCE in volume, that leads to aching joints. Increase slowly instead!

Very happy with the BDP and the results I've experienced this year. Just achieved level 1D today which I'm really pleased with. Going low and slow for level 2 next year. At 53 I think im more fit now than I have ever been. Thanks Max for the BDP and for your inspirational KZread content 👍

I have been doing 1D and hit runs.. I did feel your pain doing burpees every day. It hurts. Still getting my 80 plus minutes in a week.. love this program.. take your time and make it your own.. you won't regret the results.

Great video! Kboges has an excellent calisthenics channel and has discussed this at length. He makes a great point, as you do, that high volume may work for some people, but for others it results in too much wear and tear on the joints and leaves you feeling run down. So I guess it just depends on the person and knowing your body!

I love this approach. 20% of what you do, gives you the 80% of the results (of course with the correct intensity). I personally do BDP 2 per week, one 6C session and 1 NS session. After each one of those sessions I add 10 minutes of sandbag work, something like bear hug carries or ground to shoulder (to hit the posterior chain a little bit better). Beside that I run once a week and go to a obstacle course race class where i do a lot of pulling work. For me this resulted in a pretty much balanced training schedule that i can maintain and get great results from 🙌

Tough to gauge when you want to hit it hard I bet, but I think joints can get overloaded, I think 80 min. is plenty for me! Thanks because I've been tempted to up-shift, they're addictive, the results come fast! Rest up!

Hi Max I’ve spent the last 8 weeks on longer rep session’s training for a boxing match , yeah at 46 a bit silly bit of fun. I’ve been doing 500 sets at least twice a week with a 300 or 400 third session. I’ve also noticed sore shoulder joints . I really won’t to try a 1000 unbroken soon then I’ll prob drop back to the 20 min sessions. I just wanted to mention a 20 min 6 count I did today in case you may like to try it. Inspired by David W forget his surname he recently graduated his level 4. He split his sess into 4 5 min blocks. So I did 3 25 rep blocks on 5 min. 1min30 for first 2 then 2 min for last 25. Gives you 2 10 sec rests and a 30 sec rest. I managed 305 a pr for me. Just thought it might work well for you right now. Hope your well man ❤️

Wow max iwas on the same line as you mate .I battered the burpees on high reps for 12months it’s not good for the joints I’ve gone on to lowered reps slow and deep under tension and I’ve become so much better ,stronger you read my mind lol xx

Personally speaking doing higher volume workouts has actually helped me reach higher levels on the short BDP 20 minute sessions. It may be that i need an extra days rest after a high volume set but without doubt it has lead to growth for me. You just have to build up slowly to the 500+ push up sets.

Busy dad, how many hours do you sleep in the last time? How many hours do you need to recover properly? We are in the winter dark time. I play with a thought to take vitamin D. But I kinda don't trust artificial sources. What do you think about supplementing vitamin D and Zink?

  • @busydadtraining

When I'm lucky, I get 8 hrs, whichis perfect for me. I am also thinking about supplementing with vitamin d and zinc. I think it's worth doing.

Make a blood test, if you living in northern parts of the world your will likley be in some kind deficit. As source of vit d you can take cod liver oil (people used it for centurys to prevent rachitis). Zinc supplement is totally fine, it will boost your immunesystem!

500 6-counts on top of what, 120+ Navy's? And you're feelin' it? You should be, that's a lot (860+ pushups) of reps. Though the Gregorian chants might have something to do with it...🙂

If i train high volume i would feel pain in my joints after. Plus after 3 or 4 days doing 500+ burpees i feel overtrain also.

Interesting video. I think the benefits are different - BDP is like a HIT workout- a 500 burpee set is like a marathon, brings indeed much mental gains. I like them but probably you don't actually have to do massive volume sets just to gain a decent level of fitness. Congrats on defending the dissertation!

Isnt that just part of the training though, conditioning the body. It would be like a 400m runner trying a marathon and wondering why their joints hurt.Ultimately it comes down to your goals right?
