Which camp are you in? IBIS or no IBIS?

I’m an enthusiast and just have my camera with me as much as I can to capture personal moments. I’ve been using a Mitakon 35mm f0.95 to capture photos and videos, and on the handheld walk around video side, I’ve been liking the IBIS. (Yeah...I went X-H1). This weekend I will be trying out more of the 90f2 with the X-H1 for the family Halloween party to get some costume candids. SIDE QUESTION- 16f2.8 and 56f1.2 OR 16f1.4 and 50f2. I’ve been trying to decide which $300/$700 combo would work for me best. Any input on that side note? Haha

For weddings, I don't want to carry a tripod, so the IBIS is helpful for a longer exposure for night time establishing shot. But outside of that, my style of shooting the IBIS doesn't work with my subjects. But outside of weddings, the latest update is great for handheld video when I don't want to pack a gimbal. I've gotten great low light concert footage with longer lenses 90 and 50-140 when I want to shoot through the crowd. Bottom line is that Fuji's IBIS actually works very well. Guys like Sony, who have IBIS in all their FF cameras and push the market forward in thinking that everyone needs it, actually has a pretty useless implementation. It's much more effective to stabilize a smaller sensor (hello Panasonic m4/3) or crop into the sensor and use digital stabilization (Canon, for now).

This is a really good comparison review. Completely fair points! The motion blur aspect is something I totally didn’t think about when talking about IBIS. Great point there!

Hey Reggie. This is an excellent video and is very helpful for me. You clearly know what you are talking about. I was at a local camera shop today looking at used copies of both cameras for doing travel portrait gigs. Your logic is sound. Better AF beats out the IBIS for my use case. This is helping me invest my money wisely. Keep up the excellent work!

Have both, use them for different purposes. I shoot fashion/editorial/portrait. Xt3 for fashion/editorial where we are shooting with motion (faster af and high ss required), xh1 for posed portraits using the longer focal lengths (56 and 90) because I can shoot those at 1/60 or slower and still get tack sharp images. For me, the XH2 and XPro3 would be an ultimate combo for work/personal use.

Good thoughts! I just switched all my nikon gear over to Fuji and went with the x-h1 to pair with my x-t2. Love it. The extra -3EV would be great but my hit rate is still pretty good with my current x bodies.

Agree. For weddings autofocus is super important. Someone selling to me XH1 USD540 with battery grip. But I am having second doubt. I take photos for weddings so I guess i will take XT3 instead as most of my lens have IBS and my primes can use with flash and raise the Shutter speed. Thank you Reggie

Spot on. So true and honest. Thank you for making this video because it's going to help a lot of fuji users. IBIS is overate for still (especially event photography). But if you shoot video, especially run & gun style (cant use any sort of stabilizer), then IBIS is a feature you really do not want to miss.

bobby supardi totally agree. Unless your planning to be locked off on tripod or gimbal then you can also make a case for xt3 for vid. But yup totally agree

I own both (lucky guy). I just used the X-H1 for a wildlife photo trip to Churchill, Manitoba. The bigger body and deeper grip, along with the battery grip, worked very well with the 100-400 lens for polar bear images. Of course, this is totally different from wedding photography (although mothers-of-the-bride might approach polar bears in ferocity). The X-H1 also has larger buttons, and I use back button focus for wildlife. Your video is a thoughtful analysis of what works best for you for weddings. Thanks!

For your case it makes total sense. I can imagine golden hour shots of wildlife need as much low shutter speed as you can get

I can see how the X-H1's robust build, larger size, and ergonomics would work very well in handling the heavier Fujinon lenses... X-T3 may not be as ideal in situations like this, but it can be done with minimal issues.

The amount of blur a moving subject will create depends on the total magnification, an image taken of a subject at 10 feet with a 50mm lens would be just as blurry as an image taken at a distance of 20 feet with a 100mm lens (same magnification), but camera shake will be worse on the 100mm lens, and that’s where image stabilization becomes more useful. If 1/160 stops motion at 10 ft with a 50mm it will still stop motion at 20 ft with a 100mm as long as IBIS is effective at cancelling out camera shake. If you primarily use shorter lenses close to your subject then subject motion is the larger problem, as you suggested. If you primarily shoot birds at dusk with a 500mm lens stabilization is a necessity 😁

The X-T3's low light AF is reason enough to get it. It's the X-H2 that will be a beast. Fujifilm really needs to make the H2 their flagship camera that can do both stills and video. It should really be the the body that has all the specs and then trickle those down to the future X-Pro and X-T lines. This might be the reason why the rumors say no update until 2021 so they don't bastardize sales. I honestly think people just don't know what IBIS is and what it can accomplish, thus it's an overblown feature that camera manufacturers use to fight in the spec sheet wars. I've heard people say that the IBIS will help them take photos of their fast moving children. *Smack my head*

yup. one of the first people who dm'd me shot at 1/60s and wondered why his kids were coming out blurry. he ended up buying a 35 1.4 and xh1 and still got bad results. then i told him 1/250s min and all problems were solved. if they want to buy gear they will buy gear. no use explaining anymore.

I am an X-T3 user and I just recently got the X-H1 because of the amazing deals we have here (sale price with grip and a total of 5 batteries included). One thing I really noticed immediately is I absolutely love the grip and handling of the H1. It is way more comfortable for me than the T3. The AF is definitely better on the T3 though in terms of coverage but speed and accuracy is close in good light. The IBIS is useful for static shots and definitely a great tool when doing video (as I do both wedding/event photography and videography). I use the X-H1 when doing handheld video and the T3 gets mostly used on the gimbal and for 4k60. The X-H1 to me is great for weddings and I've even thought about getting another one to replace the T3 but I think I'll just wait for the H2 and replace the T3 with that. And the oh so silent mechanical shutter is "just butter." 😂 So for my case, the H1 is great alongside the T3. But I will definitely switch to H-bodies in the future just because I prefer the handling better. Weight is not that far between the two but the H is bulkier but not a problem. I just really hope they'll put a bigger battery on the next version.

I'm in a similar boat - I got the X-H1 to go with my X-T3. I was so surprised how much I liked the X-H1 from ergonomics to that mechanical shutter. I thought the bigger would be worse, but it's great! I. Now I'm excited for the X-H2 , whereas I would have slept on it prior to getting my hands on the X-H1.

great video and why i still have my D-750 i saw NO "needed" improvements even with the more limited # of focus points available on its screen. it locks focus quicker than the XT-3 i tried out. and it's full frame and easier to maintain IQ in crops........and a little more weight has always given me steadier shots

Lol. My wife would say it’s my downfall. But for KZread, it’s a good thing :) I like logic and data. I’m all for having nice gear but it should have a reason aside from being new and exciting

Watching this video has made me feel much better about planning to buy a camera without IBIS. Never thought on how camera shake and motion blur can affect the decision to use IBIS or not.

Yup. It’s a big factor for still. A really big factor. Seldom do I take photos of inanimate scenes, or use long long telephoto lenses haha. What do you plan to shoot most? Glad I could show you the light haha

I'm looking to upgrade to the X-T3 because using the 56mm f/1.2 is really frustrating to use on my X-T2. I know in your videos you say the AF improvement has reached a level where it's good enough and I hope I will share the same experience. I agree with you and preference AF over IBIS but... porque no los dos? Will this change when the X-H2 comes out?

No plans for xh2 cause I like xt3 as is just want faster af. And 56 1.2 af speed depends on what you’re shooting.

Thanks for a very informative video. My lowest ss was alway set to 1/80 to keep the iso low. i will try your "rule" with 160/1. whats your highest iso recommendation(on xt3)? Br Kasper

Kasper Nørgård anything part of the native iso is fair game. It’s just after iso 400 make sure you don’t underexpose. It’s better to expose correctly at high iso, than to try to recover back in post

You Rock! The X-T3 Rocks!...IBIS...SHIBiIS... You hit the nail on the head when you said "We survived using DSLR's," and truthfully never considered an IBIS system in the "old days". What does rock is OIS in a lens! I do enjoy that... yet again, we survived even before that. Are we getting so lazy with camera skills that we need such COSTLY systems? Being so lazy do we need AI in post-processing? Guess I'm just an old fart now and new-fangled gadgets aren't worth the money (sounding like my grandfather...lol! You chose wisely, and most important...it's what you like!

Nice video. I am a canon shooter but looking to switch to the mirrorless format. It would be great if you could include camera settings and if you used flash with your pics. It would help me understand better. Trying to decide between XT3 and Sony A73. Thx.

@@gastonkessler9116 i know they would be helpful, but just an interest of time and effort on my end. i squeezed in this video between editing 4 weddings. theres no quick way to dump exif data to a title card on premiere. so it's not as simple and easy as it seems.

I’m happy with the X-T3. Its AF system is great.

xt30 vs xh1 which one for best the video?

Your intelligent reasoning is something I thought had all but disappeared from KZread 😂 I will say though that those that often quote the 1/focal length factor are misinterpreting the modern rule of reciprocity. 1/focal length applied to film, it does not necessarily translate to digital. It is dependant on the individuals steadiness, crop factor and sensor resolution. Personally I use a factor of 1/focal length per 10 megapixels on the sensor. So for my 36 mpix D810 it’s about 3.5/focal length. Though if I shoot a 3 or 4 shot burst I might get a keeper at a slightly slower speed. The new crazy high res cameras have to have some form of stabilisation to be a useful hand held camera.

Reggie Ballesteros I would think for myself it would be very equivalent to my D810 needs. Between 3 and 4 over focal length. But that is for myself, a more steady person can go slower. 3.5/focal length is not really an issue though, at worst on the long end of a 24-70 it’s 1/250th. On a 70-200 the lens stabilisation becomes a requirement though. I await the next generation of Z6 or maybe even the next generation Z7. Though a XT3 is tempting to have a play with.

The 90mm f2 is my most used lens on wedding jobs. Waiting for the X-H2 though...

Exactly. For dark churches where people are not moving fast, don't let you use flash and don't let you get close a good telephone is a must, imo. Also very handy for speeches in darkrooms. I had been using my 56mm for many things, but I so underappreciated the quality of the 90mm, it's now my favourite lens.

Kevin Stenhouse for that situation, I’m considering the 50-140. To take advantage of fast af AND stabilization. For me it would be a better addition. The 90mm is phenomenal when I use it tho. I just don’t prefer the compressed look

​@@Reggiebphoto Hmmm. I'd still go with the 90mm and IBIS. It's a full stop faster than the zoom, it's lightweight and sharper. Part of the reason I went Fujifilm was for a lighter kit. IBIS, in one camera, would give all my setups image stabilization. Having said that I'd take the x-t3 over the x-h1 and live without IBIS. The focus is snappier and I prefer the dial layout. I don't want to have use a grip either.

Kevin Stenhouse for me I’ve used the 90 and was limited by not Being close enough not camera shake. Which is why for me I think xt3 with 50-140 is where I’m gonna explore first. I’m getting along fine without ibis, no need to try and adjust quite yet. I have yet to leave a wedding day wishing I could dropped my shutter speed lower. Never.

Unfortunately for me I like the X-T3 better but my goal is to do a lot of low light photography so I’m probably going to wait and see what their next model will offer.

Snowwalker of you can afford to wait, an xh2 with xt3 af would cueck both boxes if you want ibis and fast af in low light

This week i bought the X-H1 and not the X-T3 just because of the price, a new great deal at my retailer, X-H1 Body + Grip + 3 batteries 1080€. Then i added another lens ending up with the price of the X-T3 body alone.

@@Reggiebphoto Makes half a sense... focus speed or low light performance is a point to me, churches at my country are very low light and dark stone with few windows. Other point, my hand hurts because of the grip and shutter position in X-T2, prefer X-H1 ergonomy.

This is another nice vid, Reggie. You do a great job of dispassionately explaining your logic while pointing out that every situation is different. That nuance is often absent from this type of video. Speaking of nuance, there is one claim you are making in this video (as well as your one year review of the X-T3) that contradicts my own experience with these cameras. You've twice said that the X-H1 has slightly better image quality than the X-T3. While I wouldn't argue the opposite, my experience has been that IQ is largely indistinguishable between 3rd and 4th gen X-Trans bodies until you get up to around ISO 12800 where the 3rd gen sensor has a minor advantage in terms of noise. It sounds like you're seeing more than this. What are you seeing that makes you give the IQ advantage to the X-H1?

I don't notice a difference that much. It's just scientifically documented in lots of ISO tests. Many viewers will bring out the chart (which i show in my xt3 review), so I just cover my bases. HOnestly, i don't care much about the IQ difference from a realistic sensible standpoint. So don't read too much into that point, haha. It's one of those things where the xt3 crossed the good enough threshhold, so it's a nitpick that the xh1 is slightly better.

I rely on the 1.4 and 1.2 at fast shutter speeds. So ibis and 2.8 is not gonna work fornwhat j need. I also just don’t prefer zooms

Well the XT3 is probably a better camera in almost every way but the Ibis and ergo and the soft shutter alone makes the XH1 worth owning. Recently I just sold my XT3 and is waiting for the XH2 (I have a backup camera). Also lens OIS+ IBIS is better than OIS alone since you have a higher chance of getting a sharp image at extreme conditions which is very common and IBIS can come in handy at many situations. For example, I have been shooting night events with the 100-400 with the XT3 when taking photos of people from far away and without cranking the ISO too high I use a very slow shutter speed of 1/60 while being at 350ish I managed to get sharp shots with the lens 5 stops of OIS but still get some blurry photos due to my hand movement and the body of the XT3 (even with the battery grip for a little better ergo). I am pretty certain if I use the XH1 I would have a higher chance of getting sharp shots due to it’s ergo, soft shutter, and ibis in conjunction with the OIS. It can be very handy and I can’t wait for the XH2 will be.

Im stunned at how cheaply built the xt3 is. When comparing models at Best Buy it feels like a toy compared to a GH5. A plastic toy. The GH5 feels like you could throw it through a block wall. I havent felt an Xh1 but if its comparable to a GH5 Id buy it. 4k60 is overrated considering most people watch things on their phone and the newest Iphone doesnt even playback 4k on youtube.

Skip Brewer Truth. I owned the X-T2 and it felt great.. solid. I’ve now tried a used and new X-T3 and it’s absolutely a step down in quality. I’ve tested devices for a living. The dials were inconsistent. ISO dial on new X-T3 had a ‘snag’ to it and the SS dial on both new and used had an old bottle top pop sound in addition to the click. No Thank you. I want the 3 but not paying $1,300 for less quality. Trying out an X-H1 soon or going back to the 2. I don’t need full sensor coverage.

Hi man! Its hard to choose one Fuji camera to be honest. I want to buy my first one but no idea as well...I want to do alot street photos, portraits so pro3 seems nice but far too expensive just now, also want to learn videography, b-rolls etc so x-t3 is better for it but no IBIS there...and x-h1 is good but also not perfect or not as good for other stuff like other cameras. So I will just wait for x-h2 I guess and see or maybe something else next year hmm I live in Edinburgh Scotland so all needs to be WR coz its too wet in here near everyday haha...hard life.

You don’t use IBIS very much if you’re going to shoot a lot of street. IBIS isn’t helping so much when your motif is moving (motion blur). What about x-e3 or x-t30 (tilting lcd)? Splendid cameras and not so expensive.

It is so true that it is hard to choose... hard to choose any camera, at all! I have come to the conclusion that no camera is perfect, so pick a camera that best suits your purposes and the type of photography(and videography) you want to do. You may be surprised to find out that you can get the job done with most choices, even though they may not possess every feature under the sun.

The X-Pro 3's autofocus is rated to work at -6ev, do you think that the X-T3 may receive similar functionality via software update given that they have the same processor and sensor? How much of a real world difference do you think this might make in low-light shooting?

Ok, so I haven't watched the video yet (don't have time atm), but all you have to do to see that the X-T3 is a much better camera is go to Fuji's website and use their compare feature to compare them side by side. The X-T3 is better in virtually everything, it just doesn't have ibis, which doesn't bother me because they make image stabilized lenses so...

Hi! Can understand your standpoint. I just prefere x-t2/3 style and features but i have an x-h1 too for my non professional work. It seems a paradox but for professional work i use a professional gimbal. So x-h1 becomes not necessary

Well for "Professional Work" why mess with the X-H1 or the X-T3 for video I have black Magic for that and CanonC's.....X-T3 is a cute little crop camera that most real Pros would not touch lets be honest real pros have GFX....Hassel's and Phase One so come on guys get off your high horses and lets all be honest we all including myself shoot on CROP CAMERAS !!!!

Sandy Nuvo plenty of photographers support their families comfortably using only “cute crop cameras” or even cameras older than me. Just depends on what your clients need. What won’t help you satisfy clients is a condescending attitude.

Sounds silly... the fact alone that the X-H1 has less mechanical shutter shock, and shutter matters to flash-photography- is enough to breach the slight differences between those two. ISO and dynamic range are equal on both, in certain conditions the T3 actually loses out in low light high iso... as proven in comparisons between X-T2 and T3, T2 and H1 sharing same sensor and DAC for conversion

The X-H2 betta have a new sensor and processor. With -6 EV, 6k, Bigger battery, Bayer sensor, 20mp(for bigger pixels to gather light), RAW video and look like a mini GFX100.

Man, if the X-H1 focused as well as the X-T3, that would be it. The X-T3 is so damn hard to hold and its buttons terribly fiddly. The X-H1 has poorly placed buttons but it is so much nicer in the hand. Both are poor in low contrast scenes at low light, but whatever.

I agree that the ergo is better on the xh1 for sure. But I will take the hit on ergo for reduced overall size.

"what I need vs whats nice to have but I don't really need", Wise words to live by. Its true what the say.. Fuji users are smarter than Sony users...😜

badhabit haha well, the sony ethos is maximum flexibility. Which for some photographers that’s what important to them.

Really interesting video mate. I'm a wedding photographer and just switching over to Fuji. I've got an X H1 on order but couldn't decide whether to get a second X H1 or an X T3. I was leaning towards the X T3 as you made a good case for it, right up till you mentioned it's lower image quality than the X H1. That's the most important thing to me and I get the advantage of IBIS with the H1. In churches, I shoot with a long lens quite often like a 70-200 (soon to be the 50-140) and the IBIS really helps with that. I can see the possible advantages of the T3 but using 2 of the same bodies is much easier than one of each.

The xt3 af is far better than the xh1 so that’s why I use it. If you want ibis then xt4 is what you should consider

Couldn’t figure it out so I got both. The XH1 was just to much a value to attain at $900. Enjoying both but XT3 is the dedicated travel camera.

I constantly hear the ergo on xt3 is hard to hold. Ive determined that photographers are generally whiney AF about everything.I frequently use it with the “brick” lenses and its no big deal one handed and Im a smaller guy. Of course ill add, Im a firefighter and climber too so I guess Ive learned to adapt and overcome. I would quit photography all together if I thought an xt3 grip was way too small because of weight of camera.

ibis is important. takes away your trembling and is usefull if you dont have(and dont want carry) tripod sometimes. xh1 is born old .they should have made it with xt3 brain, or , better, they should make the next xt4 with ibis and cancel the xh1 line up, i agree on you about size and weight , there is no point at all using apsc sensor with big body like the xh1 when you can get same size a full frame reflex , even mirrorless, not counting FF equivalent fuji lenses like 85 1.8 or 55 1.8, that are same size of the xf but are sold maybe cheaper . right now i will not pick xh1 nor xt3, i will survive with the past generation, i consider them half developed.fuji is having fun spreading one single good thing per camera , not willing to put all in one, same goes with lenses , some of them need refresh with new AF and weather sealing. fuji need to put ibis in the next xt4 and stop reciclyng body and old technology on new bodies. including the old np126. i really don't get the xh1 so big grip and same old small battery. they don't want to innovate.

I hate to say this, but I don't see IBIS being offered on cameras in the near future... I think we'll see a wider adoption of electronic image stabilization. IBIS implementation across camera manufacturers just appears to be so hit-n-miss! I'm sure there are several factors why this is the case... especially on the video-centric side of things... probably negligible on the photo-centric side... not to mention it is pricey to implement. X-H1 suffered from its timing in the market, but it offered some things that other manufacturers were not willing to include on an APS-C sensor camera(robust build and ergos, dampened leaf shutter, 2 fast card slots, higher res EVF, improved touchscreen, top display, as well as IBIS... and made in Japan). Most mirrorless cameras need improvements in the battery department, but not by just making the batteries bigger... that's not new tech to me... it's just the same old battery tech in a larger package. I do agree that Fujifilm needs to offer updated versions of their older lenses at some point.

Choose the tool that works for you! I chose the X-H1, why not go Sony if you are so interested in auto focus...

The X-H1 IBIS helps with the low light sow they are almost on par with X-T3( I own both)....X-H1 is a working mans camera and the X-T3 is a cool little camera that has a few bells and whistles.By the way autofocus on the two is so close you can not talk about it....X=H1 made in Japan with stronger material and X-T3 made in China hmmmmm I like my cameras Made in Germany or Japan.X-H1 shutter is pro and shutter button is in a position that matters vs the X-T3 and final X-H1 with grip and Fujifilm EF-X500 for $1350 that blows the x-t3 up

Previuosly i've used Samsung NX1 (2014) camera, then i bought x-t3 - i did not notice any advantage to use Fuji. Autofocus the same, noise the same, fuji lense-worse. Moire TERRIBLE on fuji. Fuji just smaller so easier to carry.

@@Reggiebphoto and i just buy a used XH1 few days ago LoL, and my shooting style is above reciprocal of my lenses. Now feels like a waste to buy this XH1 🤣 im turning ibis off all the time. Its eat uo battery when ON.

I had X-t3. Sold just because it have no IBIS and there is almost no stabilized FUji lenses. So it's almost impossible to make blur free photos or any video whatsoever when you have no stabilization.

while it might be more difficult, it's not impossible -- simply because IBIS is fairly new technology. otherwise how did photographers 10 years ago create images before IBIS existed.
