Fujifilm X-T4 Review - A Practical Comparison with the X-T3

I’ve been using the X-T4 for a little over a month now, and while I haven’t been able to get out and do some serious landscape photography with it, I’ve been able to use it around my home city of Lisbon and shoot some videos with it, so in this video I have a look at how good the camera is and what the essential differences are between it and the X-T3
If you’d like to join me for a landscape photography workshop in Italy or Iceland next year I’ll be co-leading groups there in 2021. Check my website for more information www.andymumford.com/workshops/

Thank you very much for your videos Andy! They are very inspiring to me. I like very much this very sensitive and calm aproch to nature, the connection with the places and landscape photography. Some of your pictures look like paintings. I got a X-T30 two months ago, in part for your videos, I needed a camera to go with me when doing alpinism and I'm very happy with it!

Thanks, Andy, this is an excellent look at the features of the X-T4 from the perspective of a landscape photographer and video blogger. I purchased the X-T3 last autumn because I needed a second camera to my X-T2 to shoot video. I've been very pleased with it as both a video camera and for landscape photography. I think the X-T4 has some great features, but for now, I'll stick with what I have. The image quality is fantastic and for me, that's really most important.

Hey, Andy. I watched with interest as always and was not disappointed. My experience with the X-T4 has been really positive and I feel Fuji have improved what was an already pleasing tactile experience. One feature I do like is the C on the ISO dial which enables you to get ISO on the front command dial immediately. Put the shutter dial on T and you have full old-school manual control through the viewfinder. Also, I used the X-T4 with the 100-400 shooting - photographically speaking - seals at 1/500 sec. At 400% zoom, I was more than pleased with the results...Thank you IBIS. Good job, Andy.

Another very watchable video. I've dabbled in photography for years, but I'm focusing (sorry for the pun) more on it now. I don't shoot video and I mainly take landscape, travel and snaps so I couldn't justify the X-T4 and went for a secondhand X-T20 as a fuji starter for stills. I already enjoy using it more than my Nikon. I would have loved the IBIS and the larger EVF but I really want low weight and as few lenses as possible. You were one of the reasons I took the Fuji plunge, so thank you. Keep making these great videos!

I was considering this camera as an upgrade to my xt20 as I would love the better viewfinder. The flip screen would have been cool too. But I shoot only stills and no film + I need an L-Braket for vertical shoots which I do very often. But this flip screen will just not work with an L-Braket. It's not just the missing third party aftermarket solutions but just the locking mechanism of my arca swiss plate which will always be in the way to fully extend this new flip screen. So it seems like I will go for a cheaper xt3 instead. Let's see :-) Thanks for pointing this fact out as I could not find one other reviewer every mentioning this. So highly appreciated!

That was great Andy, thank you for making this video. It's always hard to find reviews on cameras from the landscape photography point of view. So good to hear your verdicts about X-T4. This is something I was waiting for for a while. I have decided to buy X-T4 (before seeing this video) and I am going to go for it now. I am coming from Canon 70D and for me it is a huge upgrade. X-T3 would be a great upgrade too, but I think XT4 is a camera to relay on for much longer. Video is not my concern at this point, but it is a possibility I would shoot more videos in the future, and as you said IBIS can help a lot with handheld shots and that means I can carry this camera without tripod as I go to work or going out with my family and basically have it with me more often.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts, Andy. You fed my decision process with arguments that really count (for me). I'm on the ledge between X-T4 and Z6, since the Z6 is offered in the same price range. I shall definitely sell my H1 together with its battery grip - for me this model was disappointing ... felt like a brick in my hand. So the question is: Change to FF or not? Your reflections on the topic made clear: FF is - for me - a myth. My good old, battered T2 delivers more or less everything I need and a little more, the IBIS was the only feature I appreciated with the H1 ... and the T4 gives me both: satisfying image quality, enhanced by the promising IBIS. Last not least, I've got the fine Fujinon glass ... thanks for the examples, andy, of great Images and quality. Once more I realized, what I knew all the time: It's not the gear, that counts, it's the man/woman, who uses the gear. I'm clear now: next step will be the T4.

Great review, Andy. I appreciate the lack of cheerleading and your candor about where these bodies fit in in the hierarchy of image quality. I think this will be a very useful video for anyone considering an X-T4 vs the X-T3 or really even the Fuji system in general. It will be interesting to see how Fuji differentiates the X-T40 from the X-T30 if, in fact, it is introduced without IBIS or the larger battery and using the same sensor and processor.

Thank you Andy for a wonderful comparison. Just five days ago, I traded in my XT3 for an XT4. My main reason was the IBIS and the bigger battery and I see you also have a positive feedback for both of the reasons. I wasn't sure whether I had made the right decision but after watching your video I feel a more comfort. Thanks!! I didn't do much video with my Fuji but with XT4 that might change. Many people have spoken favourably for the Smallrig L-bracket but I will probably wait till the RRS one comes on sale. Thanks again.

Thanks so much, I'm really glad you found the video useful. Since I made the video I've been using this L bracket www.amazon.de/gp/product/B089DVC6C7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It's essentially the same as the RRS one (but a fraction of the price). The plastic handle is easily removable leaving just the metal bracket, and the screen rotates through the gap in the vertical part of the bracket. It's not perfect, you can't face the screen forward for vlogging without removing the vertical part of the bracket, but the RRS one is the same in that respect, and the Small rig one still needs to be unscrewed so you can slide the vertical bracket out of the way...so it's no less fussy

Excellent as always Andy - since I personally don't do video and the vast majority of my shooting is landscapes-on-a-tripod (w/ some sports/birding for fun) I saw no need to go to the X-T4 (if for no other reason than the lack of a usable L-bracket you mentioned, coupled w/ the cable remote being moved back to the "wrong side" as you also noted). The X-T3 is such a "perfect" landscape camera - the controls are wonderful, the produced RAW files are amazing (as you noted), &c&c. A couple of very, very tiny things could be improved - for example: most of the time I use a cable release for the shutter, but occasionally I don't - just rely on the timer set to 2 or 10 seconds and then push the shutter and wait. It's all good, until the camera goes to sleep - when it wakes up it "forgets" that - and you have to re-enter. But all-in-all I am just so happy w/ the T3...

Thanks Andy, really good overview. I've made the decision to get the X-T4. After using film cameras all my life I've finally decided to get a good digital camera and have been researching what is available fairly extensively. A little while ago I was lent a Sony A99 to try out and I hated the bloody thing despite trying to love it. The specs were good but it was huge, lenses expensive and there was no joy in using it. But these Fuji XT cameras look like my cup of tea.

Paul thanks for your considered reply. This is of great interest to me ... clearly I need to do a lot more research, and your comments on the Minolta lenses is very interesting. My A99 is mint, has had almost no use (it's a A99, not A99ii). I wonder what its video capability is like compared to say the X-T2 or X-T3?

after doing a little bit of research astonished and quite excited re. the huge array of very high quality autofocus Minolta lens that available, and how rediculously cheap they are. The autofocus plus the Sony A99 IBIS with the right lens means a viable vlogging set-up which is not too heavy, plus great choices of other lenses for stills

I know this a year ago you posted this but still very relevant today. For the past year I have been looking to upgrade from the X-T2 but, as pointed out in your video, for my style of photography there’s very little gain for the investment in either X-T3 or X-T4. To be honest, the only temping features are a better EVF and deeper handgrip. IBIS would be useful for hand held but that’s mainly due to being to lazy to carry around a tripod and set it up. However, the EVF is an issue and also performance if taking high-speed multiple exposure, when the processing lag and write speed can be a limiting factor. But as you say not an issue for stills for landscape. In conclusion I decided to wait to see what Fuji launch this year. I do want a higher-res option without needing to go Medium format and shift to the XF set-up, but I’m pretty sure I’ll only justify upgrading to the X-T3 for all the reasons you say - plus it’ll become very affordable this year I’m sure especially if X-T5 specs are announced!

Great video Andy! it is really a tough decision between the X-T3 and the X-T4 if you don´t do video work. The build quality of the later it´s meant to be even better than the already amazing build quality of the X-T3, it has a shutter that is rated for a life twice as long as that one on the X-T3, and then it has a bigger battery and the IBIS which is always good to have. On the other hand, the most important factor of them all, image quality, remains the same, that is, stunning. So I totally agree with your analysis, if video is not that important for you, save some money, buy a good lens, and get the X-T3. Keep up the good work and stay safe! Greetings from Scotland!

Great video Andy, as ever. Love you considered approach to photography and teaching. I used an XT-2, 10-24, 23, 35 and 56 for about 4 years and loved them all. Last November had a rush of blood to the head and exchanged for a Leica M10-R. Long story short, 9 months of the odd stunning image but mostly frustration and as a result leaving it in the cupboard, I’ve just agreed a deal to sell. So the XT-4 is relatively easy choice (after briefly considering the XE-4 and s10), I loved the 10-24 WR so probably no need to go for the much more expensive 8-16, but not sure what to get in terms of longer focal lengths. We also have two puppies now which will take up quite a bit of my shooting time. Mostly, I’ve considered myself a prime lens guys (see above) but as I said loved the 10-24 (see above!). What longer lenses would you recommend, the 50-140, the 56 I had before, or what about the new 50 f1.0. Appreciate any advice, thanks, David

Hi David, glad you enjoy the videos and find them useful. Personally I put weight over marginal performance improvements, so for telephoto I’d recommend the 55-200. The 50-140 is faster, and better at wide open apertures, but at f7,1 for landscapes I can’t see much difference (there’s a video about it on the channel from a few years ago) . If you want to shoot portraits or people though, I’d say the 50-140mm. The 50mm is a great small option as well

The red areas are the clipped highlights, so when you pull the highlights down that's what will be affected first (as they're the strongest highlights) but the more you push the highlights slider, the more the highlights all over the image are affected. Hey Andy, as someone who is an actual photographer using cameras as tools rather than a human embodiment of Lightroom more concerned with pixels, I know you care about the actual utility of your cameras. I have a super important question related to this because I feel the same way: Is the rear command dial on the X-T4 looser than the one on the X-T3? The X-T2’s was perfect. Smooth as butter. Loved it. Still love my old X-T2 more than any camera ever. The X-T3 rear dial drives me absolutely nuts; it requires almost as much force to turn it as it does to press it as a button. I click it in a solid 75% of the time I’m just trying to turn it, and the other 25% it’s still stressing me out. I can’t fathom why it was made this way. Almost ruins the camera completely for me. It just gets in the way of shooting and makes me not want to use it. I’m really hoping the X-T4 is MUCH looser.

Hi Andy, Early this year I bought the silver version of the X-T3 (I already own a X-T1), but I regret that because black text on a silver background is harder to read than white letters on a black background (without reading glasses). So I am thinking about swapping my X-T3 for a black version. But after seeing your video, I am not so sure about it. Perhaps its better to swap it for a X-T4. Ibis can be handy, instead of raising your ISO, your can now shoot with a longer exposure without problems and keep a better quality due to using low ISO. The articulated screen, maybe useful for video, is a minus for me but I think I can get used to it. So what do you think is a wise decision? By the way, due to Corona I did not shoot a lot this year, but after seeing your videos I always want to pick up my camera again and shoot. Thanks for the inspiration, your videos are great. First of all, thanks so much Frank, I'm glad you enjoy the videos and find them inspirational. With regard to the X-T4 or X-T3, it really does come down to IBIS and the screen. Stabilization is great and does mean you don't always need a tripod, but obviously it has a limit and there are times when you still need a tripod to shoot. The screen? If you don't shoot video I'd say the X-T3 is better.

Hi Lucas, all of the videos I've made about photography technique, composition, tips for photography, and my vlogs where I talk about how I make the image are as relevant to an old camera as they are to a new one. I talk about the creative approach, and don't worry about things like resolution or the aspects of a camera that have changed much over the last 10 years. Most of them are as applicable to film and phone cameras as they are to modern cameras. Then there are the videos I've made about processing, which again are about a creative approach and can be applied to literally any digital RAW image.

The size and weight are very similar and you’ll barely notice the difference. In terms of image quality, they are identical. When it comes to whether it’s a good choice for you, I really can’t say, that’s such a subjective and personal choice

This is the 4th video of yours I have watched about the XT line of cameras, I am a professional photographer working in the states. I use a Canon 5D IV, with a full complement of lenses. I now recently want to start shooting some fine art landscape work. Would an XT camera offer me something that I cant get from Canon? Enjoyed the videos thanks.

Thanks for the comment. I don't think the XT cameras would give you anything you can't get from Canon, to be honest I don't think any brand provides something that another doesn't. I do feel that mirrorless cameras have significant differences to dSLRs and a lot of advantages, from weight and size to the shooting experience, but as for which brand, well every camera is incredible capable nowadays, so it really comes down to shooting experience and how much the camera gives to the creative experience, which is purely subjective. I personally find the Fuji cameras a delight to use, there's a tactile quality to shooting with them that really resonates with me and I certainly didn't find that with Nikon, which I used to shoot, but that is entirely my own opinion, and if you're happy with Canon cameras and don't feel you miss anything, then why switch?

I'm afraid to let go of my very beloved X-T3...my lenses have OIS so IBIS isn't the clincher...and I just do stills, so all the video upgrades aren't an issue either....so I'll stick with my X-T3 which isn't even 2 years old yet!!

It's a great camera and I'll happily continue to use mine alongside the X-T4. If you don't need IS then you don't really meed an X-T4

Generally I go with 60fps 4K and Flog for my b roll footage. For talking headshots I'll usually use Provia or Eterna instead of F log

From what I've read, and it may be out-of-date, is that Adobe isn't set up to properly handle Fujifilm's X-Trans sensor which differs significantly from the Bayer filter array. Capture One does handle the X-Trans sensor images. Reportedly, the Iridient X-Transformer does a marrvelous job of converting the X-Trans files to generic DNG files which are then more readily handled by Adobe. Do you have any experience with this software? Thank you.

I've used Iridient X Transformer and it does make a good job of X Trans files, as does Capture One. To be honest though I've never really had a problem with the way Lightroom deals with Fuji files

Hi Andy, I am using the xt 4 which I acquired recently. I have one question which I hope you could help me. Whenever I am in the single shot mode, and everytime I take a shot, the led screen will blank and indicate storing before I could see anything on the led to take the next shot. How do I turn this off if possible Thanks in advance Andy Yeoh

Not really sure, the only time I’ve seen that is with long exposures, and for that you need to turn Long Exposure Noise Reduction off

thanks, I have found the solutions. It was the setting of clarity which cause it to slow down the storing@@AndyMumford

How much difference in your experience does the ibis make between the x-t4 and x-t3 with a stabilized lens? Does the stabilization in the lens make the x-t3 comparable?

You can't really compare. The IS in the X-T4 makes a huge difference.

I saw rumors of a 70-300mm lens from fuji. If such a lens is released, would you have any interest in using it? Thanks.

Probably not actually, because I use the 55-70mm range a lot and don't really need anything longer than 200mm
