Why I Choose to be a Nomad | Robin Barrett | TEDxSouthCongress
Do you feel like a gerbil on a wheel at your job? Robin Barrett definitely did, but after experiencing a devastating catalyst in her life, decided it was time she owned that wheel. She sold her home and belongings and moved into an RV. But Robin is no bum; She's a digital nomad, working hard as a writer and KZreadr. Feeling freer than ever, Robin explains how a nomadic way of thinking can help you chase your dreams. As the creator of CreativityRV.com and the Creativity RV KZread channel, Robin Barrett encourages others to discover the possibility of a modern, nomadic life through which professional and personal passions can converge and flourish.
After twenty years as a business owner and successful entrepreneur, Robin discovered what many of us do: that chasing the status quo doesn’t necessarily create happiness. But how does one find a balance between making a living and living a life of joy? For her, the solution was found in the most unlikely of places…a motorhome.
Robin was not a camper or RV enthusiast - in fact, she had never been inside of one until the day she decided to give up a ‘sticks-and-bricks’ house in exchange for mobility and freedom. She escaped corporate America to live and write full-time while traveling. Now, she helps others navigate their way into the life of an American Digital Nomad, have happy travels and be free.
As a creator, she shares her personal journey and gives others the tools they need to do the same, including through her book, Be a Nomad, Change Your Life: The Ultimate Guide to Living Full-time in a Van or RV which has been a bestseller since its release in January 2019 and through her KZread videos which have been viewed more than 8 million times. Her latest book Work at Home While You Roam and upcoming book, 19 Nomads, both help others navigate the variety of options and styles available to all who want to travel and live now. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Outstanding Presentation Robin!!!! Your sister would be Proud!!!!
I lived in an RV, for 5 1/2 years, and absolutely loved it!!! It was “heaven on earth”. I let the spirit lead me, U.S., Canada and Mexico! A lot of people asked me if I ever got lonely...never! It is well worth it...if there is even an INKLING in that direction!!!
I'm caring for my mother with Alzheimer's disease. I have 4 years till early retirement age. The thought of the day I can travel keeps me motivated and positive. You are helping me feel more confident in planning the rest of this life. Thank you

I’m in the same boat, taking care of dad with Alzheimer’s, left my job because I was sick of the politics. I’m trying to figured out what I want to do next, I just want to enjoy my life after working so hard for over 20 yrs with the same district. I do want to live in a sprinter.
Robin, you look beautiful. You have great public speaking skills. Such a great talk
"She didn't see it coming..." What a beautiful legacy from your sister. Happy travels!!
This is my first hearing of your sister. What we wouldn’t do for them. My RV allowed me to travel to see my sister in Phoenix from Ohio. She had a stroke two yrs ago, lost her dream home in Tahoe. She lives in assisted living now. We have been on the road 7 weeks of our 4 week tour!!

Great speech! I've been following you for quite a while. My husband and I sold our large Victorian home and bought a toy hauler. We're currently stationary in Omaha to be near our kids and grandkids, working and saving up to start travelling in December. He's training to be an RV inspector and I'm working on opening my own Etsy shop. Huge life change! But we don't miss our old life at all.
Robin, you are such a classy gal! So well spoken and always prepared with great information. Thank you for making this available to us!! ❤️

Thanks Robin, I have been watching your KZreads for several years now. Watched you move into new/different RV's. We are retiring, downsizing and hitting the road. Lots to see out there, Thanks for blazing the trails for us!
Tears of admission & much appreciation for all you’ve shared Robin! I left the 60+ hr per week corporate job in 2015, after my own cancer event. My pursuit of happiness has not been as clear or clean as yours, but watching you has inspired me to finally buy my RV last year. Thank you so much for you doing you so beautifully ❤️

Great talk, Robyn. You broke a complicated subject down to the basics. I've lived for eight years full-time in my motorhome, and I love the lifestyle and freedom.
Robin you did well. Your sister was remarkable, in that while she was facing her own death, she was thinking of you and offering up sisterly advice that has made all the difference. Your presentation was genuine and heartfelt. You have been a great inspiration to me, as I have been on the road for 6 months now, and I love it.

Thank you for sharing your story. My dear friend, who was like a sister to me, lost her battle with pancreatic cancer when she was 45. She wanted to go to Italy and we tried to make it happen but she was too sick. I learned a great deal from her about living your dreams and mine is to live like you do. I watch your videos and am learning a lot. My friend Sheridan taught me well that life is short so live your dreams before it’s too late.
Totally awesome! Standing ovation, Robin!

I really got a sense of your sister's character and how her legacy lives through you. Two amazing women!
This is the first time I've heard your story. Wow. Your sister asked the right things to make a huge difference. You honor her memory well, Robin. My kids offered me the chance to be a SAHG'Ma to help with the grands while they serve in the military. I love not punching a time clock. I do dream of traveling and have been watching your channel for a while. I'm doing some of the programs you shared in your book to create income and am leaning toward a Wayfarer van so my husband and I can hit the road when between deployments. I appreciate you!
Captivating story and motivational speaker! Excellent Talk!
Love the way you told your story and so happy you had the strength to follow what you wanted in life and didn't stay in the corporate world. I have followed you and all the RV's you had and now your 5th Wheel....brilliant choice! Be Well and Be Happy!

I love the inspiration that Robin put inside my soul. To be free like her is such an inspiration and a goal in life to live a life under your own control. Yes I’m one who cries. But I’m done crying and I am going to give myself freedom. Nothing will change in your life if you don’t make the change. My condolences for the loss of your sister. Two amazing women.
So great Robin! Don’t stop being an inspiration!
Thank you very much for the important perspective. Great reality check. My wife and I retired at 62, sold everything, bought a used motorhome and hit the road. My sister passed away the year we started our full time RV adventure. She was fine one day and had a brain aneurism and was gone. That's how fast it can happen to anyone. That was almost 3 years ago and we have been loving every minute of this life as "free range humans." Everyone lives this lifestyle differently. We spend about half our time in campgrounds and inexpensive RV parks with wonderful neighbors, in every sense of the term - because they're having the time of their lives too. We all want to be there, and that makes all the difference. The rest of the time we love to boondock (free dispersed camping on BLM or Forest Service land) in some of the most beautiful places imaginable. Actually, unless you've been there, and experienced it yourself, you probably can't imagine it. It's some of the most profound almost religious experiences I ever had. We have less than 1/2 the income that we did before we retired, but are able to save twice as much money in the bank because our living expenses are maybe 1/3 of what they were when we were living in a stick and brick home. Plus we're living the lifestyle of the rich and famous that others only dream about on an early retirement with social security and a meager pension. If we can do it, so can you.
Such an amazing story. I’ve been following Robin’s KZread channel for quite a while now and just love her and her super positive outlook on life. This talk was awesome and I’ll definitely be sharing this with many people 👍🏽👍🏽❤️❤️
Great speech Robin . WEll done . So sorry for your loss . May your sister RIP. Enjoy your adventures towing your home on wheels . Cheers .
Wow, this is SO me! I was in Austin, getting severely sick from job stress. So I quit, sold my house and set off in a motorhome for 'a few months'. That was summer of 2012. Still out here, living the nomad life. It's a more flexible life financially, as almost all expenses are variable. So, it's actually cheaper than I expected. Safe travels. Hope to cross paths one day!!
