Like so many other 90s kids, I tuned in for Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie, a continuation of one of my very favorite cartoons growing up. Whether or not this new film was as good as the original show (or whether it was even necessary or not) remains up in the air in my mind, but the film did serve as a reminder of why the show was so wonderful. Let me take a few minutes and explain why I think Hey Arnold! is among the best.

I agree that not enough kid shows these days show melancholic characters in a similar fashion to Hey Arnold and I think it's because they can't. Hey Arnold seems like it's a show that was meticulously created over a long time and nowadays everything has to be fast and snappy and ends up not as well thought out as a result.

There's a lot to be said about the now-dead or dying american slice of life cartoon. I think my favorite was Recess, which may have to do with the way it sort of glamourized the mundane. Nothing normal was ever actually normal in Recess, it was always a way over-the-top exaggeration of it. In the same way that A Christmas Story or The Sandlot filters the ordinary through the lens of memory, Recess filtered everything through the lens of childhood's misplaced sense of importance, where the trivialities of recreation are the most important thing to a kid.

Slice of life cartoons are definitely not as numerous as they once were but there are still some around.

I definitely agree that a strength of the show was in how grounded and relatable it was. "The List" episode stands out for me because it's story is fairly mundane. Arnold trying to have a perfect day doing kids stuff. Everything goes horribly wrong and Arnold gets bummed, but his grandma tells him to shake it off, cheer up, and move on. It didn't need monsters, superheroes, or an epic plot, not that any of that stuff is bad. The message was really simple, sometimes life sucks and you can have a bad day. You just have to learn to roll with the punches, look up, and hope life gets better. As I've gotten older, I've found that the adult characters are more relatable as well. Helga's mom is an alcoholic who probably would have had a better life had she not married Bob. Mr. Hyunh losing and reuniting with his lost daughter. Dino Spumoni being a washed up singer and dealing with his lack of relevance. There's too many to list, but it's a testament to the show that it could create so many memorable and relatable characters that are, for the most part, regular people.

I never really understood why I used to watch this cartoon when I was a kid, because, looking back at it, there wasn't a lot of stuff going on in the episodes that I thought my younger self would have liked. But this video made me realize why I would stop to watch it every time it was on TV. This really was a fascinating show.

This show takes place in the slums of new York. People have no idea how hard life was back then except for the people who were alive during that time. Run down neighborhoods. Abandoned buildings, cracks in the side walk crippling poverty and debt, drug addiction, litter on the ground. This show shows what the real world is like living in a city. You can't step outside without seeing something along those lines. Not only that but this show promoted interracial friendships which is something we definitely need for our kids in a time like this. The Jungle Movie was a much different feel from the show, yes. But it wasn't supposed to be just like an episode of the series. It was supposed to be an adventure that finally feeds us the carrot that the end of The Journal episode dangled in front of us and either give the show the proper closure it deserved or open up a brand new door should the series be rebooted. We've been left to ponder the ultimate fate of Arnold's parents and we got not only that but Helga's love being the whole reason he got to San Lorenzo and cured his parents and the Green Eyes of the sleeping sickness and Arnold finally clearly realizing Helga's love and that he loves her. It was much more fantasy than the series was but we were given what we were given in Parents Day and The Journal and TJM was a great follow up that was a reward for long time fans and hopefully was the right introduction for a new audience. You're right on about the series though, it was real and relatable and didn't always present a happy ending or get too preachy. It provided emotion without being super sad or dark, made us think, but was also funny and gave us great characters with depth that we want from cartoons. The whole story with Helga and Arnold was just so well presented throughout the series and they Helga especially are among the best characters in all of children's television. I hope there's a reboot just to see what happens with them moving forward along with him and his parents.

Phineas and Ferb is funny and bombastic and self-referential, but that's kind of what I hate about it. The characters don't really have any emotions, except Candice, who's your typical "Stick in the mud who will always fail". They don't take a single thing remotely seriously, even when they're making fun of darker concepts like bullying, obsession or mental illness, so it ends up feeling weirdly cold and mocking and flipant. But it's just a silly, fun show.

Ugh, such a beautful analysis! You hit on so many points of why I absolutely adore Hey Arnold!. It had stuck in the back of my head since childhood, but when I went to rewatch it as an adult, I thought I wouldn't care about it as much. Wrong! I actually just got way more into it. Because I started picking up on all these subtleties that I'd missed the first time around. Even when I was a kid, though, I related to the emotions. Like, even though I was a pretty quiet kid a that age, Helga was the only character I knew who was my age and experienced the kind of emotional intensity as me. For me it was shipping, but it felt similar. There's a point where I related more as an adult, because as I got older, I did develop this kind of tortured relationship with it (y'know, because it's not, technically real), plus, I experienced actual unrequited love and jealousy, and I grew into that strong sense of identity that Helga has. She's totally my spirit animal. And I feel like Hey Arnold! as a whole reflects who I am as a person. It never shies away from reality, and it does have that sense of melancholy, but it maintains a sense of optimism, wonder, and understanding for other people. It does focus a lot on disappointment, but... I think beyond that, there's a sense that what you want isn't always what you think it is, and that you can still find happiness in ways you didn't expect. Like Arnold's disappointment with Ruth? That same episode is where we see him and Helga really connect for the first time. And yeah, that connection does feel deep and real. They're working through something that kids go through, but it still feels important, and... I dunno, throughout the series, I got the sense that Arnold and Helga are the same kind of people inside, emotionally, and that they have similar holes in their lives, and that when they finally do work it out (because the series made it pretty obvious that they were meant for each other), they'd find real happiness together. I'm impressed that the show takes their relationship so seriously, that it never treats it as something shallow just because they're kids. It treats all the characters' emotions that way, and I think that's why it resonated with kids so much. It shows them other people's perspectives, and that they're not alone in their struggles. And isn't that one of the most important functions of literature? One thing rewatching Hey Arnold! reminded me of is how, even if I'm older and wiser, I'm still the same person at heart. And I'm not so different from the kids who love it today.

Oh, yeah, you really need to! I grew up with it and decided to rewatch it over the summer because The Jungle Movie was coming out. I thought, I won't be as into it now that I'm an adult. Haha! No, I was actually way more into it, because I picked up on all these complexities and subtleties that I missed as a kid. Not that I was dense back then, but... Well, for example, Arnold kind of idealizes traditional families, particularly sibling relationships. If I noticed that as a kid, I thought it made sense for an only child. But rewatching as an adult with the experience of loss, it struck me that it's probably because he doesn't have parents, and his grandparents are already elderly-- he probably worries about ending up on his own. I think kids can understand that kind of thing, but it might not occur to them if they haven't been there. And I like it that those subtleties are there, but not really explained, because isn't that how it is in real life? It's a really smart show that way.

To elaborate, Steven may have been raised by three aliens and come to life due to a different alien giving up her light form but Steven deals with real world issues, like coping with the death of family, regret, anxiety and even more, including internal conflicts that the aliens have to deal with but they are still incredibly human. Something like that is amazing to watch, as far out as it seems most of the internal conflict are things we all deal with. That, to me is what a cartoon should end up being. It can take you to a place that isn't real but still relate to your own life

doesn't hurt that the Crewniverse is clearly inspired by anime, where slice of life is a major genre and frequently bleeds into other genres like shojou and shonen, all of which are present in the show. So we get to see that sort of slice of life introspection and internal conflict, right alongside shonen battle sequences, hell "Stronger Than You" is literally both a battle sequence and a character affirming who they are as a person by how strong their emotional bond is, rather than their muscles, which is rare in and of itself.

I refuse to ignore you; you are absolutely correct and nostalgic. Hey Arnold! is one of those shows whose true brilliance is not upfront, but in the mundane details. There's so much growth and depth in nearly all characters that it is easy to glance over if you don't have the patience to pay attention to. Moreover, the fact the writer decided to make the show slower and trust kids will enjoy the feelings rather than the overt action is beautiful and still stands the test of time.

This show is honest about how plans don't always work and such as longest Monday where pretty much nearly every 4th grader got trashed, but on the flip side arnold points out that when they become 5th graders they can let the tradition die out and be forgotten. This is show to relate to.

Hey Arnold! was one of my favorites! I think the fact that it was so real and honest made it so special. I could relate to the characters and loved how the adults were shown as flawed because it's the truth. The show didn't talk down to kids, which was rare in kids shows at the time and even now, I'll bet.

I felt the special was a decent way to end it thought I feel it shouldn't have taken so long. It felt more like something you see a show wrap up like Ed, Edd, and Eddy. It was more over the top, but I'll admit that when Arnold finally meets his parents that I almost teared up. Which is something I think the show did very well. Having small moments that have big impacts. Most famous probably is the christmas episode. The small act of finding a lost family member turning to one of the most memorable moments of the show.

He's right that the plot didn't really beg for answers to the questions we had (or it wouldn't have, if it hadn't been for that cliff-hanger), but I think it was important for fans. It's a show that a lot of people (myself included) got deeply emotionally invested in, and obviously, it stuck with us. It didn't bother me as much as it did some people, (mostly because the implication that everything would work out was enough for me), but I've gotten super hung-up on other shows, ships that didn't work out the way I wanted to. Things like that will stick will stick with me for just years; I can't help it, despite knowing how absurd it is. So I think it's wonderful that fans finally got the closure they needed; that's not something that happens often in life.

6:10 It's seems like the new movie lost that principle of letting the story breathe? Those long silent dialogue-free scenes prevalent mostly in anime, especially Ghibli movies or the few western shows like Samurai Jack. Giving the audience reflect on the story instead of pressing "what we've learned in this episode" down our throats. Studios are pretty afraid of losing our attention and treats us like a kid with ADHD but on the other hand it might also have been cut down to fit better into rerun schedules on TV. Giving Nick a reason to air Hey, Arnold again and saving some money while doing it.

Van Gogh I'm not sure if we as audience really have that short of an attention span. Media has a bad habit of trying to one-up itself because of that fear though. Relying more and more on cheap shock tactics and not having to write anything that respects the viewers understanding. Oldspice is a good example. "Look-up, look-left, turn-around, look-at-me. Product. Buy me!" but one the other hand commercial spots are pretty expensive so companies save a lot of money is they make it as short as possible

Another great overview and analysis. I totally agree - despite being a fan of the original show (I was no more than 9 when it first came on XD), I couldn't sit through the Jungle Movie for more than 20 mins. It was as though the creators "missed the point" of what made the original series so unique and timeless. I also found it noteworthy you mentioned the sense of melancholy, because that's something I always subconsciously felt too. The urban/jazzy soundtrack lends itself to that emotional note, too.

I think you nailed it on the head what made the series so special and why the latest movie, while not bad, just didn’t feel up to the same standards set years before. Perhaps it would have felt deeper and more cathartic if we saw Arnold mull over more about how his growing up without his parents made his life so much different from the rest of his classmates(yeah we saw it in episodes like Parents Day and Journal, but the movie really needed to sell that point). What Arnold felt he was missing out on. Why he felt such a compelling need to seek them out regardless of the dangerous risks, when he didn’t truly know them aside from stories an objects left behind. In that same vein, Helga’s confession and disappointment at Arnold not immediately returning her feelings was also very rushed and didn’t feel genuine. Instead of angry, I imagine that she would be far more depressingly crushed and unconsolably despondent at the thought that the object of her obsession and affection since she was small (and the one person she depended on to show her love) had seemingly rejected her as she always feared he would. Considering what we know her true feelings about Arnold are, the destruction of the locket should have been an act of giving up hope rather than a fit of temper. If I had to do that shot over I would have had her slowly and meticulously tear the picture up and let the pieces and the locket go and fall in, rather than the frenzied shredding and flinging over that was done. That scene should have been a deeply sad reflective moment for her having that last flicker of hope finally snuffed out, but it was instead portrayed as Helga just getting fed up and frustrated and ultimately indulging in a temper tantrum. The significance of the gesture was less than it should have been. I hope that if they ever do green light a sixth season or spin off, that the writers keep your words in mind when crafting stories. It’s the honesty and quiet moments in so many stories that made the series resonate with many fans.

The episodes pigeon man and the haunted train are my so far favorite hey Arnold episodes. Pigeon man shows that pigeon man is basically a pigeon enthusiast and seems to be tired of people shaming pigeons and himself. So he is basically feeling a pigeons pain and tried to shrug it off, but left him no choice but to move to a place where he can live in peace with his feathered friends which was the jungle. And for me being a pigeon enthusiast, I can relate to that. For the haunted train, it's a very good Halloween episode for any steam locomotive enthusiast like me as well.

Thank you for the beautiful analysis of one of my favorite shows as a child. I think one of the reasons why it was is from the point you make: it gives time to think and that disappointment is a part of life. Whenever I would tune into the show I knew it wasn't going to be some happy sappy show but something deeper, to question the very fabric of your childhood, which would help transition into a teenager. It wouldn't make the world more magical but more realistic with serious situations. That's what I enjoyed. Not taken in by fantasy but by reality.

Something that stands out for me is that the adults are all flawed in some way, and that it reflects how a child would see them, rather than how they see themselves. I also rate how it breaks a lot of stereotypes about "perfect" family life and almost none of them have a perfect family.
