Why heatsinks are essential for PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs

Ойындар

I previously crafted a video on whether NVMe SSD heatsinks mattered or made any difference ( • Uncovering the real im... ) then along came the Crucial T700 NVMe SSD. This is a PCIe gen 5 drive, which runs at an insane 12,000MB/s. There are two versions of the Crucial T700. One with a heatsink and one without. Crucial sent me both, so I thought I'd thoroughly test the drives to see what difference the heatsink makes and whether you need it.
Features of the Crucial T700 Gen 5 NVMe SSD:
• Built with Micron 232-layer 3D TLC NAND1
• PCIe® 5.0 and NVMe™ 2.0
• M.2 2280, Double-Sided
• Available in premium fan-less heatsink and non-heatsink

Wait, how are you getting 12k for the first two speeds, then 6440 for RND4K? What specs are you running in your system? 3:22

Obviously it's not really 628,000 MB/s read speed (it's actually IOPS but that's irrelevant, the point was how massively wrong the data is). The data at 0:38 just shows how wrong things can go without cooling.

I’m upgrading my music production PC from a Microsoft Surface Pro 4, the SP9 is quite expensive. So I checked into CPU Benchmarks Single Thread, where Intel finally surpassed the Apple M2 and the 13900 leads the way. A custom build comes in at the same price, overall, as a Surface Pro 9 but includes the fastest CPU/RAM/SSD you can buy. Unfortunately the heat must be addressed for each. Of course, I’m constantly accessing data in the form of virtual instruments, small and plentiful data files that can overwhelm the system, causing glitches and audio drops during a recording. Once a ‘take’ is compromised it’s garbage, and must be re-performed. So I end up buying the T700 a few days after it launched, with every intent on using it for virtual instruments. Luckily I selected the Heatsink version. Performance is the concern. I would not be happy if it operated at Gen4 speeds. Since it has been 20 years since I built a computer, this was all overwhelming, confusing, and time consuming to research. But this is a great resource, I’ve watched most of your videos and they are indeed calming. The parts are still on the table, waiting for my AIO to deliver next week and the experiment begins. Thank you. -Jim

Anything as fast as a ssd sata seems to be good enough for me. But can i ask if an nvme speed could be limited via bios to curb temps? And are temps a problem with slower nvmes ? Cheers from shaun

HELP! i currently have the t700 with heatsink and i want to remove it. (I already have) and will it void the warranty? ALSO i dont want to use the heatsink due to its largeness. So i want to use my mobos heatsink which also states its 10X at heat dissipation. Can i do this? Also on the non heatsink version, there is a sticker on it. Since i got the heatsink version and i removed it, there is no sticker?? Does this matter, should i worry? The thermal plate for my b650e atx ice should cover the ssd but there wont be a sticker, so it will directly touch my ssd. Am i good??

@TheProvokedPrawn ok thanks for the response, but what exactly do you mean madness. I know it was stupid doing it. But honestly the there no other option. They only had heatsink version and the heatsink less version wasn't gonna be in stock for another 2 months. So I thought I could take out the heat sink and I actually did. But I don't know if it would void the warranty, if you know could you please tell me? And do you think it's a good idea to keep the heatsink and don't throw it away? I'm not gonna use it. Also I've been watching your video about sticker vs no sticker. You said you get 5c less without sticker but on heavy loud you get more degrees without the sticker? It's sad that heatsink version doesn't have the sticker. But I am overall fine? Two more things, when I handle my t700, it's OK to handle it on the sides right? Just the sides. Do you think the ssd will over throttle? If there is some thermal paste still on the SSD and my mobo already has some. Can I just scrape off the thermal paste already that was reapplied from the heatsink on the ssd. I will do it carefully. THANKS SO MUCH, I subscribed :)

I'd personally opt for the heatsink on the drive as it's specifically designed for it and is massive so should offer better cooling than a motherboard heatsink.

Thanks for your quick answer, I actually wanted to return the SSD with a heatsink and buy it without a heatsink because the Z790 Endcore has a fan KIT that you can only connect when you connect the motherboard heatsink, I think but I have I have now decided to keep the Crucial T700 4 TB Gen5 NVMe M.2 SSD with heat sink. What do you say can you also use the FAN KIT fan with the SSD with heat sink? The fan kit fan is from the ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 APEX ENCORE, mainboard?

Currently in the process of doing a new build, just got an i9-13900K, ROG Strix Z-790E board, 2x24GB Corsair DDR5 RAM, and have installed a 2TB 980 Pro, I wonder, how much of a leap it is from Gen 4 to Gen 5. The non heatsink T700 2TB looks like something I’d pick up but for $340 USD, I can pick up 2 980 Pros with that price.

  • @TheProvokedPrawn

    @TheProvokedPrawn

Well on paper the difference is 7,000 MB/s on the 980 Pro vs 12,000 MB/s on the Crucial drive. How much you'd notice such a difference in the real world depends highly on what you're doing with it. The most noticeable difference is always going from SSD or HDD to NVMe. Then you really feel it!

same reason why they were necessary for GEN4 drives and recommended for some Gen3 drives for longer life GEN4 drives have very high working temp GEN5 have even much higher temps i know morons used GEN4 drives without heatsink they all died very fast and of course the performance suffers alot with a Good Passive heatsink on GEN4 drive you will get 40-50c Max temp under load No Heatsink over 90c and GEN5 drives are much worse hell first GEN5 drives needed Active liquid cooling and still worked at 50c and higher
